Expert warns of human risk from monkey malaria in Sabah amid high cases

KOTA KINABALU: A medical expert has called for measures to protect people living in Sabah's forested areas, citing the high rate of monkey malaria cases in the state, which account for half of the cases nationwide.

Quoting data from the Health Ministry and Sabah Health Department, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) medicine professor Dr Jenarun Jelip said while local transmission of human malaria was no longer a risk in Malaysia, the threat of monkey malaria remained.

He said of the 2,063 monkey malaria cases nationwide, a total of 1,154 were recorded in Sabah.

Monkey malaria can spread to humans through infected mosquitoes and can be fatal.

He said that while malaria manifestations depend on the parasite species, the primary symptom is recurring fever.

"Patients typically experience phases of high fever, chills and sweating that recur every 12, 36 or 72 hours depending on the type of malaria.

"This differs from dengue symptoms, which usually involve a sudden high fever accompanied by muscle pain and pain behind the eyes," he said.

Dr Jenarun said that high-risk groups include those involved in logging, research, ecotourism and recreation due to their exposure to mosquito bites.

He said challenges in treatment include patient non-compliance with medication and delays in seeking medical attention.

"There are patients who do not seek early medical attention despite showing symptoms, resulting in the disease being detected at a critical stage," he said.

He said malaria treatment typically takes three days, though certain types may require up to two weeks, with patients usually admitted to hospital for monitoring.

On prevention, he advised the public to use personal protective measures such as wearing long-sleeved clothing, repellent and mosquito coils.

"UMS is currently conducting research to develop rapid detection methods specifically for monkey malaria, as well as community-based prevention programmes.

"We aim to empower communities so they can take preventive measures at both individual and community levels," he said.

Cambodia turns to Malaysia and Singapore for fuel as Vietnam and China restrict supplies

SINGAPORE/KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): Cambodia is importing more fuel from suppliers in Singapore and Malaysia to make up for supply shortfalls from Vietnam and China, its energy minister told Reuters on Wednesday, as the US-Israeli war on Iran squeezes fuel availability globally.

About a third of the 6,300 petrol stations in the country of nearly 18 million people closed last week due to uncertainty over the impact of the conflict on fuel prices, but many have reopened ever since, and only 5.77% are closed currently, Energy Minister Keo Rottanak told Reuters.

Vietnam and China have restricted fuel exports until at least the end of March to arrest potential domestic shortages.

Neighbouring Thailand banned exports in July 2025 after the onset of armed conflict with Cambodia and has not resumed supplies since.

Thailand and Vietnam together accounted for over 60% of Cambodia's annual petroleum product imports in 2024, while Singapore and Malaysia made up nearly a third and China accounted for around 7%, according to data from International Trade Centre, a Geneva-based UN-WTO trade agency.

Rottanak said Cambodia was boosting imports from Singapore and Malaysia due to export restrictions elsewhere.

"We're still able to import a little bit from China. But because we have strong partnerships with global suppliers Total and Chevron, they are able to mitigate some of the risk," he said in an interview with Reuters.

Rottanak did not provide specifics on when the supplies from Singapore and Malaysia would arrive, but said current fuel stockpiles were comparable to historical levels.

Gasoline and diesel exports from the two countries to Cambodia in the first 18 days of this month were 25% higher than the same period last year, but 40% lower than in the final 18 days of February, Kpler data showed.

Cambodia has no oil refinery, and has less than a month's supply of diesel, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gas and petrol under normal conditions, Rottanak said.

"We are not yet 100% insulated at this stage, but the inflow seems to be okay for the time being," he said.

Cambodia has been partly shielded from the shock by a rapid buildout of renewable energy, Rottanak said, adding that fuel imports have largely remained stable from 2022 levels due to renewables-led electrification.

"Because of renewable energy, we are in a way less susceptible to 100% shock from the oil in the Middle East," he said, adding that the conflict highlights the need to expedite interconnection grids of countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

"Situations like this should remind all of us that an ASEAN power grid is the way to go. We would be much, much more resilient than we are today."

Hit-and-scam couple return (Car &Insurance)

Our laws on insurance and cars are so cacat that it allows scammers to make a living out of it.

When the police tangkap this couple, it will be a long and tedious process in court. The rental car will be impounded as evidence. Assuming the rental company purchase the correct insurance (allows cars to be used as business) probably will not pay out since the car was used for criminal activity, which i doubt is covered in the policy. It's going to be an expensive experience for anyone who bump into this couple. Confirm lose NCD.

Motorists in Negri latest victims of extortion

KUALA LUMPUR: A couple who staged road accidents and then extorted compensation from unsuspecting motorists in the Klang Valley six months ago is believed to have struck again, this time in Negri Sembilan.

Their victims were two vehicle rental company owners operating in Seremban from whom the couple rented cars to pull off their acts since early September.

Both rental vehicles were later found extensively damaged by the owners and abandoned, with the couple nowhere in sight.

One of the victims, who only wanted to be known as Mohd Iqbal, said the man and woman had rented a car from him between Oct 4 and 18.

He said when they defaulted on payments for two days, he tried contacting them, but the couple were unreachable.

The 40-year-old said he managed to track down the car, which was found parked opposite a building and was badly damaged.

The other car rental company owner, Fitri Sinan, 41, also suffered losses after the couple rented a car from him for five days in September.

“The couple later told me that the car was involved in an accident but refused to reveal its whereabouts. But I traced it to a car workshop.

“This is when I learnt that this couple was notorious and had been involved in staging accidents to extort money,” he said.

Soon after, Mohd Iqbal and Fitri lodged police reports and took their cases to MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong.

Chong said he learnt that the couple had logged over 100 police reports on road accidents they had allegedly caused over the past months.

“This goes to show they could be behind dozens of such cases. The latest information we received was that they are now in Melaka, and we believe for the same motive.

“This has gone overboard, and the couple is still out there ‘making a living’ staging accidents, blackmailing and extorting cash from affected motorists.

“I dread to think if someday their actions lead to a fatal accident or endanger the lives of innocent children who are on board a vehicle they target.

“I urge the police and the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to act swiftly to put an end to this.

“I find this case very peculiar as they remain unapprehended despite over 100 cases involving them,” he told a press conference yesterday.

Chong also said that affected motorists had suffered losses when they paid for their repairs or lost their no-claim discount when they made insurance claims for the damage to their vehicles.

Cautioning motorists to be alert of this notorious couple, he said he was compiling all the cases suspected to be committed by them and hopes to bring it to the attention of the police.

In May, Chong had raised the matter to alert the public after being approached by a dozen motorists who fell victim to the man and woman.

According to the victims, the man who was often the driver would deliberately cause collisions between his vehicle and theirs before demanding compensation for the repairs at the scene of the accident.

He often demanded large sums but usually settled for a lesser amount after negotiations.

The card was just replaced earlier this month because the CVC and expiry date scrapped off.

Most of the purchases were for groceries (tap and pay machine). Towards the third/fourth week only, there were some purchases made on Lazada/Shopee. The Lazada/Shoppee APP and transactions were made on X phone.

OTP is sent to Y phone, registered with the bank.

Its really annoying and I am wandering whether the compromise is X phone, Y phone, Lazada/Shoppee App?

Is there any malware app or app to lock certain apps (like messaging, SMS OTP is sent)?

Loopholes in traffic laws leave accident victim in limbo

KUALA LUMPUR: A routine ride to work ended in agony for motorcyclist Jebat when he crashed into a car parked by the roadside without any warning cones or signage.

He ended up breaking four bones in his leg, but the then 19-year-old's ordeal didn't end there — the car had neither insurance nor road tax, making it impossible for him to seek compensation from the owner.

Jebat's mother, Kak Aby, 39, said she had to fork out thousands of ringgit for her son's recovery following the accident at the end of last year.

"His hospital bill came up to almost RM400. Thankfully, it was a government hospital, but I had to pay for his supplements and milk. I also had to spend on travel expenses from our home in Sunway to Sungai Buloh.

"It wasn't just him who suffered. I too had to sacrifice, taking leave from work to send him for physiotherapy," she told the New Straits Times.

To rub salt in their wound, the car owner got away with just a slap on the wrist — a RM300 fine.

"He didn't say or do anything for my son. He knew he could get away with just a summons, so why bother paying us for our troubles?" she said.

Kak Aby said some lawyers tried to take advantage of her son's predicament, claiming that his case was winnable with at least RM40,000 in compensation.

"But later, they said nothing could be done because the car had no insurance," she added.

Kak Aby also had to pay around RM300 to repair Jebat's motorbike, as his insurance covered only about 60 per cent of the cost.

Since then, Kak Aby wants the government to crack down on vehicle owners who failed to renew their road tax and insurance.

"We need stricter penalties so road users will be more responsible. At least seize their vehicles until they renew their documents.

"Otherwise, pity those who get into accidents with them. Imagine if it involves a death — a father leaving behind a wife and children. What would happen to them?" she said.

Dev, 74, also fell victim when his new car was hit by a man he believed to be drink-driving.

"I just had the car for three months when the incident happened early last year.

"After hitting my car, the man tried to conceal his road tax, and when he came over, I could smell alcohol.

"I told him my car was brand new and I wanted to lodge a police report so I could claim from his insurance to repair the damage.

"He said 'Yes, you can go ahead', but he never turned up at the police station," he said.

Dev later found out that the man had no insurance.

"After knowing that, I felt demotivated. I knew nothing could be done, and I had to use my own insurance instead.

"So, I lost my no-claim bonus," he said, referring to the discount offered on premiums with no history of claims.

The repair cost almost RM20,000, but for Dev, what frustrated him more was the man getting away scot-free despite his actions that could have ended a life.

"When I went to the police station to request the investigation report, the police said they can't investigate because the other party didn't lodge a report.

"So it just ended there," he said, adding that the driver was not even issued a summons.

Now he believes that law enforcement procedures need a review and frequent operations must be conducted to weed out such drivers.

Cautionary Tale - Hiring Private Ambulance

A friend of mine, the grandfather, is disabled and bedridden, also showing signs/symptom of end-stage dementia and Parkinson's disease. In short, it's like a vegetable already.

Something was a bit off and the children decided to admit their grandfather into hospital for check-up and they received a recommendation from a friend whose friend is a doctor, and they recommended this "Private Ambulance" provider to send his grandfather to hospital on the 6/6/25 in the morning. The price quote was quite reasonable at RM 250.

On the 5/5/25 (the night before the grandfather was supposed to be admitted to hospital), around 8pm after the grandfather finished his dinner, the caretaker went outside to watch the news. One of his children went in to change the diaper. When touched, his body was cold and he was non-responsive.

Immediately, they called the ambulance that they had arranged for the next day to come immediately.

The ambulance team had advised carrying out CPR, and CPR was administered until the ambulance arrived.

When the ambulance had arrived, the ambulance team had administered AED, put on oxygen and lastly administered CPR. This was done all the way to the General Hospital.

This is the part where it gets interesting....

The husband and the caretaker stayed behind with the kids. After the kids are asleep then only the husband will go over to the hospital. Only the 2 women (wife and daughter) accompanied the grandfather to General Hospital.

At the hospital, the grandfather was sent into emergency unit (resuscitation unit), the wife accompanied. The daughter was dealing with the ambulance. Initially, when the bill was issued, the daughter though the bill was for RM 260, when in fact the bill was for RM 2,600. The daughter said she had no money and said that she would ask her husband, then immediately the ambulance people started harassing her and snatched her phone, cancelling incoming calls and making calls to someone. Fortunately, her mother started calling out to her and went back into emergency. The doctor informed her that her grandfather had passed. While bawling their eyes out, she immediately made payment. When she exited the emergency unit, she told the ambulance that payment had been made and the ambulance team informed her that they also provided undertaking service and to give them a call (subsequently, it was understood that they were undertakers and not really ambulance service).

As the daughter had bought a package from an undertaker service, the ambulance service had attempted to negotiate with the undertaker service to handover the body.

Once everything was settled, they attempted to make a police report. The police said, 'What do you expect us to do, and what do you expect to achieve from the police report?' You agreed to the ambulance service.

Some details are sketchy, but the lesson is....

1. If you have a family member who is sick or unwell, you better damn well learn to do CPR.
2. Get ambulance from trusted service (999) or those like First Ambulance, St John, MMR or Red Crescent. If no time, just go for 999. If you plan ahead, call the private ambulance service and ask them for their price, like emergency pickup up during day or night, etc. Make sure you have text message or record somewhere.
3. If emergency, non-responsive, no pulse etc..., immediately start CPR until ambulance arrive and go direct to nearest GH.
4. DO NOT HAND OVER THE DECEASED NRIC to the ambulance or undertaker. If you hand over, you will not be able to get the body released from the hospital or get a death certificate issued. Only make sure that you hand over to people you trust (your appointed undertaker like Nirvana or Xiao En) or PDRM.

The friend is contemplating action but they are just so tired after the funeral, etc. These guys will still roam around, and when you are in your most desperate situation, they will hold you hostage. So please be prepared.

Car Accident, party at fault no road tax

Family member at traffic stop, traffic was quite heavy. Traffic light turn green, traffic moved slowly. Fkler accelerate too much and rear-ended my family member car. Camry (old model) rear ended Mazda, camry (BAD GUY CAR)still looked okay, a bit of touch up kaodim, the Mazda (VICTIM) looking like it just came out of a 16 car pile up. Went to police station buat report, then the other party called, say their road tax expired and want to settle outside. Anyone got experience, please share?

Sorry if i confused anyone, CAMRY IS THE BAD GUY YA. He rear-ended my family member car.

Etiqa Car Insurance (Drive Less Save More)

My car insurance renew recently. For Drive Less Save More, normally i get RM 5-6++ weekly. The last payment made was on 22/10/24, on 24/10/24, i receive two additional payment of RM 0.49 and RM 0.88.

Either my insurer is broken or they are trolling me?

I suspect my phone got hacked or someone using my mobile phone number for something.

Flight Cancellation by notorious budget ariline AA

Recently, we booked a trip from KL to Hokkaido for 6 pax for departure in June. Today, we received an email from AA that the flight was cancelled due to "operational reasons". Want to ask, anyone experience this?

We paid by credit card as well, do they refund the monies back to your credit card or they pay you in credits?

Really pissed off with this AA.

Most credit card now, if you use Jompay to make payment, you don't get any point. I know some other credit card got give points but I don't have that now (maybe later).

Some normally how i get around this problem especially for utilities (TNB, Syabas), I will top-up touch and go and then make payment. I will collect points for topping up my touch and go.

Now the service provider I want to pay is not on Touch and Go. So the above solution tak jadi.

Is there a third party provider (something like paypal) like accept payments by FPX (can collect points) and then can onward make payment to my provider?
