Hi sifus,

I'm a total noob in this but I've been thinking of buying a few gold coins from Maybank. However, I haven't seen anywhere that it is specifically mentioned that they will buy back the coin. Is it possible to sell it back as per their daily rate? If not, how does one go about selling it should the need arise?

Any sifu that can help guide me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Warranty claim experience with Shopee seller

Intent of this post is to warn others in case they encounter something similar.

Last year, I purchased a Logitech mouse from a Shopee seller. I started encounter some intermittent click issues which I highlighted to Logitech support. Logitech asked me to do a warranty claim via the seller. When I contacted the seller, the seller started ignoring the messages despite their product page stating 2 year warranty.

I have contacted Shopee and they have said that they cannot do anything past 30 days. I am fairly certain the seller does not intend to honor the warranty claim (of course, if they do - I will update accordingly). Anyway, I will take it as my lesson that for such future purchases, probably best to stick to a regular store or an online shop that has a physical store.

If anyone has any advice if anything else can/should be done, I'm all ears.

If not, just hope that this post will help someone avoid a similar situation.

New Tenants wants repaint

So my previous tenant is leaving the country and I've found new tenants. Rental agreement signed, deposit given (and returned to previous tenant). They requested a new hob even though that's not really part of the deal but as a gesture of good faith, I have agreed to purchase it. Now, they are requesting repainting. Just to clarify, this is due to their preference and not due to paint crack / damage. Who should pay for such a repainting?

My first instinct is that unless the paint itself is damaged, then it should be on their own cost. Damage however, should be on me as they are entitled to a house in good condition when they come in. Paint preferences, however, are on them.

Wanted to get other people's view on this.

Thanks.

Help on deciding HW and configuring media server

Hi all,

Complete and utter newbie in home entertainment here. Appreciate any help / advice you guys have.

I would like to set up a home media server to stream to 2 separate TVs. Streaming to mobile devices is a plus but not required. Everything will be connected via LAN.

To save cost, I am planning to use my current PC (i5-2500K, 8GB RAM, 6 SATA ports). I will be buying a new PC for my use that will salvage some parts from my current PC, like SSD / GPU etc.

My questions:
1. Can I use my current PC as the home media server? I have read of power consumption concerns.
2. I have a spare GPU lying around, will the GPU help for the media server? I read something about transcoding but I do not know what it's about.
3. Any particular TVs I should get? TBM sales person suggested I get Android TV if I plan on running plex. Is this correct?
4. Should I bother giving the media server a SSD or will it be a waste?
5. What I have read online is to install FreeNAS and then plex on top of that. Is this the best / simplest way to go about this?

Any general advice for me? Let me know if you need to know any other info.

Thanks for any responses.

Can you challenge VP?

Re-posting this for potentially more views. Original is here: https://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=4013979

Sifus, need your help to clarify since I do not know enough about this topic.

I have a condo that was completed early this month. VP letters were issued and I took the keys. When we entered the property, we learned that the water and electricity meters were yet to be installed. They said it will take another 1-2 weeks (from last week).

My aunt who is a lawyer but not really specialising in construction said that from what she recalls, you're not supposed to VP without electricity and water meters.

However, I have checked the CCC requirements and it does not require electrical and water meters to be installed. So can the property be VP'd without these?

Just to clarify, the internal piping itself is ready. They connected water through the common facilities and the supply works. My only issue is on the meters themselves which means I cannot actually apply for water from Syabas or electricity from TNB.

Can the property be VP'd in this state? Is this considered normal or is it an issue? Thanks for any help.

Finances in a marriage

I recently got married. We currently live with my mom in my childhood home. Prior to our wedding, I purchased a house for us which will not be completed until mid-2016. We estimated that renovation + furnishing that home will require approx RM 150k.

My father-in-law re-mortgaged their home a few years ago to get some cash for his business and transferred the loan and house to the children. My FIL said that he would make the monthly payments but since about a year ago, he has not been able to do so. Now, the children make the home loan payments. She gives her mom money on a monthly basis since she started work.

Originally, we agreed that we will both save up together so that we can achieve our goal of RM 150k for our home. A few months into our marriage, my FIL had financial issues. Well, that's not entirely true. He's had financial issues for a long time. It just got to breaking point 2 months into our marriage. He asked my wife to take a personal loan which I advised against. He said that he will make the monthly payments. She took the loan. Up till now, he has managed to do so.

My wife also has a car that she is still paying for but is mainly used by her family. Currently, due to her commitments to her family, she will not be able to save enough such that we will reach RM 150k unless I liquidate some other savings that I have. Her dad's financial situation has worsened and is now asking her other siblings to sell their cars / buy new ones so that he gets the money from the "sale". Or take personal loans themselves.

My wife has started considering giving my FIL more money on a monthly basis to help him with his financials. This is what I am currently upset about. Her current take home pay is ~40% for her family (70% if she has to start paying the personal loan) / ~20% toward our RM 150k. She has said that I should not be so calculative and perhaps she's right. But I can't help but feel like she's not putting our family first.

Just wanting to get some other perspectives. Am I overreacting? Should I financially support my FIL more than I currently am?

Things to consider:
My FIL runs his own business of sorts - he is a kind of broker for deals.
My FIL's credit card debts are ~our combined annual salary x2.
My FIL regularly goes up Genting.
Saman Ekor

So, I logged into myeg recently after not doing it for months (I'm usually very law abiding when driving).

Then, I was surprised that in Jan this year, I kena saman RM 150 during OPS, saying I was speeding. Got pic attached as well. It was near Bentong on KL-Karak highway. I'm usually careful around there to keep to the speed limit. But sometimes the road is downhill and I can imagine accidentally go above the speed limit without noticing.

I thought the pic would have the speed I was traveling at, but didn't seem to have it. Worth asking them for a formal saman to see the details?

Also, funny that I could still renew my road tax/license in May this year.

Anyway, just wondering, I never received any formal letter from them yet, is this summon still correct?

I always thought that receiving the official letter baru consider kena saman? So, should I go pay at the police station now? Any chance there will be a discount at year end?

TMnet Gateway lag

As the topic says, every so often (actually, not as often now or maybe because I'm working in the day so I don't realize as often as before), my internet crawls to a halt, even websites take quite long to load. Almost every time this happens, I ping my gateway and get 500+ms. Usually, pinging gateway should return ~10ms. This is also when I get ~100-200kbps (sometimes as low as 30-40 kbps) bandwidth as measured by TMnet's speedometer (I'm using 1mbps package).

Anyways, any network gurus here that have any suggestion of what can be done on our end to help improve it? Don't have to suggest making a report to TMnet. This has happened to so often, that I don't think making a report or not makes any difference (or at least, that's how it feels like to me).

Latency in WoW

To those of you that have the Quartz add on, you know that it shows you how much lag is being experienced by the current spell cast and is not affected by the "normal" latency meter. I'm just wondering if this is normal for most of you:

Traceroute to the edge of the WoW servers, for me, is usually 200-240ms (quite consistent).
In-game latency meter varies from 300-500ms depending on time of day, server load etc.

Quartz spell cast however, usually records lag from 350 all the way up to 800+. I'm just curious why a traceroute gives a latency of 220ms while casting can lag up to 800ms. It just seems a bit weird to me. Anyone have any ideas why this occurs?

Streamyx problems

So my Internet crawled to a near halt yesterday evening. TM net speedometer gives 30-60 kbps while my package is 1mbps. Called TM net, yada yada yada. Today, I followed up and they said its probably their server (shocking!) since they ping me with a response of ~700-800ms. Anyone have any idea how long it'll be before they get their bums out of the office and actually try to fix the problem?

Cheras/Ampang area btw. Not 100% sure cos I stay at sort of the border between cheras and ampang. Anyone else experiencing the same problem?

Anyone plays using Jaring?

As the topic says, just curious if Jaring gives better latency. TMnet is very unstable for me, sometimes good sometimes really bad and its starting to annoy me lol
