Flood relief boat capsized

KEMAMAN: Six relief workers, including a doctor, almost drowned when the boat they were travelling in capsized here on Wednesday.

They were however saved by the life jackets before another boat rescued them 10 minutes later.

One of them, Dr Norbaiti Yusoff, 30, said they clung on tightly to the capsized boat that was swept off by strong currents until they were spotted by another relief boat travelling behind them.

Dr Norbaiti who was with nurse Norwati Muhammad, 30, two male officers from the Welfare Department and two boat drivers were on their way to Kampung Seberang Tayur to send supplies and tend to the sick at the flood relief centre there.

Norbaiti and Norwati left the Kertih clinic at 8am and joined the others in the team in the afternoon for the trip.

"However, the boat driver decided to change direction and headed towards Kampung Pasir Gajah as the currents were too strong,"'

She said the boat overturned after it hit an electrical cable as the driver was making a turn towards their new destination at around 6.45pm.

"It capsized and we had to cling ourselves to the boat that was swept away by strong current," she said.

All they could do was pray for their safety as she and the others clung to the capsized boat.

They were saved by another relief boat travelling behind them about 10 minutes later and they had to seek refuge at an abandoned ‘kongsi’ in Kampung Pasir Gajah.

"Our belongings and medical equipment were lost but I am thankful we escaped," she said adding that her thoughts went to her husband and children.

"But I did not regret being part of the relief effort. In fact, I am glad that I had done all I could to help the flood victims," she said.

Dr Norwati said she could have drowned if not for the life jacket she was wearing as she could not swim.

The stranded relief workers got out of Kampung Pasir Gajah after the currents eased a little at noon today and met reporters at the Kemaman District office.

Meanwhile, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said who was also present said this was the worst floods to hit Kemaman in 42 years.

"The flood had caused disruptions to water, electricity and food supplies," he said.

my colleague is an unker. he is 56yrs old. Not married. or probably married when he's young, when we ask he dont deny and dont confirm it also.
he is the most experienced staff in my department. but only in old technology. now quite hard for him to catch up.

In a piece published in its Malay-language “Rencana” section yesterday, the portal apologised to Dr Mahathir for misreporting his remarks in a news article titled, “Dr Mahathir akui ‘salur’ RM200 untuk menang di peringkat bahagian”.

“Kami dimaklumkan laporan tersebut tidak tepat dan sudah pun dikeluarkan. Segala kesulitan amat dikesali,” TMI penned in its apology in Malay.

[Translation: We were informed that the report was inaccurate and has been removed. Any inconvenience is deeply regretted.]

Today, on request from state sovereign fund Khazanah Nasional Bhd, the news portal agreed to apologise and pull two reports from its website which allegedly portrayed the government-linked firm as uncooperative with national auditors.

Last week, the news portal was also forced to apologise to Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir over two articles alleging the Kedah mentri besar of engaging in “money politics” in his unsuccessful bid for an Umno vice presidency on Saturday.

“The Malaysian Insider apologises to Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir over its report titled ‘Mukhriz raises the stakes in VP race with 1.2 million SMS blast plus ‘windfall’ for party branches — sources’, and its Bahasa Malaysia version, ‘Jentera kempen Mukhriz agresif, ‘hujan emas’ dijangka turun bermula lewat malam’,” the news portal wrote after being threatened with a lawsuit over the reports.

Sadly, the bridge is now remains underused since it became a white elephant and has been widely criticised for the facts that it had served no purpose of linking to an unpopulated island which incurred a project cost of RM 7 billion.

If you happen to fly into Alor Setar , take a window seat and keep a sharp lookout from your window a few minutes before you land at Kepala Batas airport for you could catch a glimpse of the bridge.

burn car to claim insurance

so my friend is having a problematic car. after one problem come another problem, he become fedup,
one day the car stalled on highway. he leave the car there. he came back another day and set the car on fire.
now he said he's waiting for the insurance to pay the claim.

is this really possible? he said many others have done it.
