Malaysia to seek preventive measures, diplomatic cooperation over transboundary haze, says Zahid

KUCHING, Sept 16 — Malaysia prioritises long-term diplomatic cooperation and early preventive measures over seeking compensation from neighbouring countries in addressing the issue of transboundary haze, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also National Disaster Management Committee Chairman, said a prudent and structured diplomatic approach is the most effective way to address sensitive issues among Asean member states while ensuring optimal technical coordination.

“While seeking compensation does not necessarily imply definitive liability that must be borne by any specific country, taking preventive measures early would avoid the need to address such sensitive inter-state issues.
..................................................................

This is like talking into the air. We are months into this haze situation with no end in sight and we are still talking of long term solution? How long?

Last week:

Malaysia plans to recruit about 200,000 Bangladeshi workers over the next six months, according to a Bangladeshi minister.
Bangladeshi local government, rural development and cooperatives junior minister Mir Shahe Alam said the workers would be recruited through companies approved by Malaysian authorities.
He said recruitment would begin in phases at the end of September and be completed within six months.
Of the total, 10,000 workers would not have to bear recruitment costs.
"They (Malaysia) will hire about 200,000 workers. Of them, they will hire 10,000 workers free of cost," Shahe Alam said, as reported by The Daily Star.

Today:

Fahmi: '200k workers from Bangladesh to Malaysia' claim not official position

A reported statement quoting the Bangladesh government that Malaysia plans to recruit 200,000 Bangladeshi workers over the next six months does not represent that country’s official position, said government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil today.
Speaking at a post-cabinet press conference in Putrajaya, the communications minister said Human Resources Minister R Ramanan informed him that the statement was made by a junior minister and was not an official position of Bangladesh.

Seems like something fishy boiling underneath the news...

Controversial lecturer Solehah to challenge termination by IIUM

PETALING JAYA: Controversial lecturer Solehah Yaacob is challenging her termination by the International Islamic University Malaysia and has accused the university of being unprofessional in its decision.

Solehah said she was taking the university to the Industrial Court. “I was dismissed within 24 hours and not allowed to appeal,” she said. “IIUM wanted to pay me the equivalent of six months, but I refused," she told FMT.

Earlier today, the university said Solehah, who has a doctorate in Arabic linguistics, was sacked in April and was no longer a professor at the university from April 27.

It also said Solehah was not permitted to use any title or position linked to the university or claim any affiliation with the institution.

Solehah said IIUM was unprofessional in dismissing her, especially as she had been awarded the Malaysia Research Assessment award by the higher education ministry the day before.

The MyRa assessment, developed in 2006, is used to evaluate the research performance of universities in the country.

Solehah has been at the centre of public attention over several controversial views on Malay history and civilisation. Among the claims she was reported to have made included one that the Romans learned shipbuilding from the Malays, and that iron ore deposits in Malaysia were the results of meteor strikes.

Guess who will win??
