Fadhlina: Malaysia to teach Thai, Khmer and Vietnamese as elective languages in schools to boost Asean ties

GEORGE TOWN, April 21 — Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said Malaysia is expanding its elective language offerings in schools to include Asean languages like Thai, Khmer, and Vietnamese.

Speaking at the Empowering Education Summit 2025 here, she noted that Malaysia’s bilingual foundation in Bahasa Malaysia and English is now evolving to support regional collaboration.

“To harness this, we must ensure our young people are multilingual, adaptable, and culturally competent,” she said in her keynote address.

She said the summit’s theme — “Shaping Asean’s Future Through Skills and Innovation” — is timely and urgent, as over half of Asean’s 670 million people under 35.

“This demographic advantage is a unique asset but it can just as easily become a liability if we do not act decisively,” she said.

She cited an Asian Development Bank report showing nearly 60 per cent of jobs in the region face disruption from automation by 2030.

“Yet, too many students are still learning through rote memorisation and outdated curricula,” she said, adding that education must move toward creativity, critical thinking, and lifelong learning to remain relevant.

Fadhlina said Malaysia is aligning its reforms with the Asean Work Plan on Education, focusing on curriculum reform, teacher development, and industry-linked technical and vocational education and training (TVET).

She said the revised secondary school curriculum (KSSM) emphasises digital skills, while the DELIMa platform supports wider access to digital learning.

Over 100,000 teachers are being trained in digital pedagogy through partnerships with Google, UNESCO, and local universities, she added.

TVET programmes are now co-developed with industries, especially in Johor and Penang, where E&E firms are shaping semiconductor training pathways.

Fadhlina said Malaysia’s National AI Roadmap is integrating AI into classrooms as a learning tool, alongside expanded STEM initiatives for underserved students.

To bridge the digital divide, she said hybrid solar-powered classrooms and satellite internet are being introduced in 180 remote schools in Sabah and Sarawak.

Fadhlina also touted the new National Child Development Centre in Putrajaya as a regional model for high-quality preschool education with an emphasis on cognitive development, nutrition, and teacher training.

2 Malaysians admitted to Harvard College

PETALING JAYA: Two Malaysians have been admitted to Harvard College, the undergraduate school of Harvard University, for the new academic year graduating in 2029.

The Harvard Club of Malaysia said the two are Athena Siow from Kuala Lumpur, who plans to major in government (data science track), and Namira Lee Tzu from Kuala Terengganu, who intends to major in environmental science and engineering.

Siow, a Yayasan UEM scholar, finished her SPM at Kolej Yayasan Saad while Namira completed the major secondary school examination at SMK Chung Hwa Wei Sin and is a PNB Global Scholar.

“Harvard College, which has one of the lowest undergraduate admission rates in the world, continues to seek out talented students globally who demonstrate a commitment to using the available resources around them to contribute towards a better world.

“We are especially proud that the students admitted from Malaysia remain primarily from government schools and, increasingly, from middle-income backgrounds outside the Klang Valley region,” said the club’s president, Wan Nadiah Wan Abdullah Yaakob.

Wan Nadiah said Liow was one of two Malaysian representatives at the Conference of Youth at COP 2023 held in Dubai, and has advocated climate justice in Malaysia by training about 100 girls through Girl Guide programmes.

She also coaches young Melakans in chess for free and volunteers at a refugee school in her neighbourhood.

Namira meanwhile has been actively involved in environmental conservation, which contributed to her selection for the US-sponsored Southeast Asia Youth Leadership Programme held in Illinois and Washington DC.

She then secured grants for two years in a row which were used to kickstart a turtle conservation project with secondary school students and the World Wildlife Fund. This was later expanded to students from a Chinese primary school.

Harvard University, the oldest institute of higher education in the US, is widely regarded as one of the top universities in the world and ranks fourth in the QS World University Rankings 2024.

Malaysia currently has fewer than 15 alumni from Harvard College.

Bersatu politician Badrul Hisham Shaharin, also known as Chegubard, said “mass public pressure” had led to Zamri’s release just before Friday prayers today.

A two-day remand order was granted for Zamri to be held in custody to assist in the investigation into an allegedly seditious Facebook post he made concerning the Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple in Kuala Lumpur.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said yesterday the case was being investigated under the Sedition Act and the Communications and Multimedia Act for tarnishing the reputation of the Hindu faith through his Facebook post.

The temple had been at the centre of a controversy after it was revealed that the temple was to be relocated as the land was bought by a textile company which planned to build a mosque there. On Tuesday, it was announced that the temple committee had agreed to move 50m away to a 4,000 sq ft site.

Zamri had previously been investigated for a remark about Hindu worshippers performing the kavadi ritual while appearing to be possessed or drunk. Nearly 900 police reports were lodged against him. The investigation papers have been submitted to the Attorney-General’s Chambers.

FMT has sought confirmation from the police.

Zamri was arrested in Perlis yesterday and was brought to the Kangar magistrates’ court this morning for a remand hearing.

A new research letter published in JAMA Surgery from experts at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is calling attention to the risk of concussion posed by slap fighting.

The letter, titled “Video Analysis of Concussion Among Slap Fighting,” explains that while there is a general consensus regarding the dangers of slap fighting, especially Power Slap, a slap fighting promotion that has recently gained popularity, a quantification of the concussion risk had not been reported.

“Many members of the medical community – including professionals from BIAA – have continually raised questions about the risk of traumatic brain injury that slap fighting poses. Concussions like those witnessed by the Pittsburgh researchers are serious injuries and can be devastating, especially when sustained repeatedly,” said Rick Willis, President and CEO of BIAA. “We applaud the team of researchers at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine for shining a light on the very real effects of this dangerous activity.”

The team of researchers conducted a cross-sectional study which involved reviewing the rules of Power Slap as presented on the Power Slap website, as well as viewing videos of slap fighting events, which included both legal and illegal slaps. Reviewers watched for visible signs of concussion exhibited by the competitors.

After reviewing a total of 78 fights, which included 333 slaps and 139 sequences among 56 contestants, the reviewers found that concussive signs were observed after 29.1 percent of slaps and 51.8 percent of sequences. Of the 56 contestants, 78.6 percent exhibited at least one concussive sign. The most common signs exhibited included motor incoordination, slow to get up, and a blank or vacant look.

“Not surprisingly, the video analysis of power slap episodes conducted by the Pittsburgh researchers arrived at the logical conclusion: namely, this activity is a paradigm for inflicting blunt force trauma to the head of a defenseless participant and results in the expected constellation of neurological changes seen with impact events,” said Gregory O’Shanick, MD, the Brain Injury Association of America’s Medical Director-Emeritus. “This is, in fact, the established definition of concussion/mild traumatic brain injury as currently recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”

The findings of this study, researchers wrote in their letter, suggest that slap fighting may induce traumatic brain injury in contestants, with a potential for long term consequences. “Therefore, there must be a high surveillance when evaluating such athletes both acutely and on long-term follow-up,” they wrote. “Slap fighting may be a more grievous combat sport than previously assumed, and strategies to prevent neurological demise among its participants should be pursued.”
