Thinking of getting a SUV?

Just a little background
1. own first gen Myvi and Honda city GM 5 and was looking for an upgrade to a SUV
2. like most malaysian, would prefer to keep and maintain car till 10- 15 years

When reading up on current models of SUV in malaysia, came across comparison of MPI and GDI based engine. There are many videos out there but as a summary
- MPI : Multi port injection,
-- not so great fuel consumption
-- not new technology
-- as the petrol is injected into the chamber, it can help to clean the valve from the gunk /carbon build up from the oil vapor coming from the positive crankcase valve

- GDI : Gasoline Direct Injection
-- cost more to build / newer tech
-- better fuel consumption
-- injector "sprays" petrol into the chamber directly, bypassing the valve
-- while fuel injector cleaner can help to clean the injector, but the valve would eventually be filled with gunk / carbon from the oil vapor coming from the positive crankcase valve
-- eventually when the valve is full of carbon, creates more headache (rough idling, higher fuel consumption, loss power, etc)

While there are ways to clean the carbon build-up (like using CRC valve cleaner or etc), the most effective is to do walnut blasting every 30-45k km (some workshop like volkswagen offer this service). And walnut blasting need to be done professionally as you may introduce walnut into your engine oil and it is time consuming to blast and check every engine intake.

Another way of preventive maintenance is to use a oil catch can, but most SUV in malaysia are not providing it as stock and any modification would void your warranty. Also, many experts believe that oil catch can is only effective up to a certain level but eventually you would still have gunk / carbon build up in GDI based engine.

So, with the pros and cons of GDI and MPI and looking to hold the car 10-15 years, it would make sense to look for SUV that uses MPI engine. And based on my research, most of SUV in Malaysia uses GDI and there are a handful that uses MPI. One uses both MPI and GDI but its beyond my budget... Note, I am not a car salesman nor I am here to promote any car brands or services or chemical cleaning.

My questions to the experts here

1. Did i missed out anything in my summary above? I am not looking for performance but more of the reliability and ease of maintenance in a modern SUV
2. If you are comparing between SUV A and SUV B, and both have the same technology features (lane assist, blind spot, reverse camera, etc), would MPI or GDI be deal breaker?

Turbo or Non Turbo SUV

Hi car sifus,

I got a question with regarding to turbo cars since I never had the chance of driving / owning one.

"Would turbo cars overheat while travelling long distance (eg driving back to Kelantan (440km) or hometown) ?"

The question above relates back to the my "itchy hands" for a SUV cars. And in today's market, we have the likes of

Turbo : Peugeot 3008, Ford Kuga

Non Turbo : Honda CRV, Mitsubishi ASX, Mazda CX5

So, since I am planning to drive back to Kelantan, would those turbo cars overheat during the journey? For those who are not familiar with the journey to kelantan (route 8),
- its like 7-8 hours driving
- one way trip is around 440 km (KL --> KB)
- the road is not flat and straight, more like curvy, sharp corners and some part hilly
- and trust me, you dont want to have a car breakdown or overheat along route 8. It's pretty much isolated in some part of the journey...

So, for those who have driven a peugeot 308 to kelantan, do share your opinion or story on this. Stories from other turbo cars are also welcomed but i think that those DIY turbo would be slightly off topic...

Please dont go off-track by saying "why dont take route bla bla bla...." or "why dont fly, bla bla bla" or "why dont take bus, bla bla bla"

Just say I want to register a new car and choose the number at JPJ (dont want to give to runners, some runners are lazy to make an effort to satisfy the customers).. for Selangor number plate, can I do it at any JPJ in Selangor area (such in Jalan Sultan at PJ) or do I need to go over to JPJ Shah Alam (section 16)? thanks!
