UM Quantity Surveying Course

Post it just to warn students who apply to QS course in UM

Rating: 1/5
Comment: Not recommended
Identity: I am a QS graduate in UM. I prefer to remain anonymous

Details:
1. Lecturer Quality : 1/5
Lecturers is the worst part in this institution. They are self centered and refuse to listen to students' feedback. Whenever we give constructive feedback to them they think we are challenging them. Most of them do not have actual working experience, making them a worst educators. After i step into working field, i found what they taught are wrong. Also, they have no passion in teaching. Some of the lecturers can make 3 hour lecture into half hour and talking rubbish and cancel class as they like. No feedback was given in our home work and assignment.

2. Course structure: 3/5
the course structure is ok, the problem is how they implement it. They still use taking off paper, a very outdated approach. Although you have been taught 2 years of measurement, but you are kind of exploring yourself without any guidance. the construction technology is very general, most of it are extracted from the internet resource. The following are those i think very essential in conducting your professional practice but not been taught:
1. materials especially architectural finishes
2. they spent most of the time explaining the structural items but ignore architectural and M&E aspect
3. professional practice: how to evaluate VOs, certifying workdone... (what they taught is irrelevant to the industry practice)

In IP you have to present your work and they will ask you questions but the assignment and question itself more to architectural aspect instead of costing.

3. Hidden cost
They have a lot of annual dinner and camping which asks you to spend around RM100 per person per event, and all the course's material you have to buy on your own (you need to build prototype). you have IP3 which asks you to go overseas and the expenditure is fully on you. (depending on which countries you are going, may up to 10k)

4. Dishonesty
Like i mentioned above, you have a lot of events that ask you spend money, but you are not only spending on your behalf but also lecturers. and in IP3, those lecturers reject proposal of going neighbouring countries just because they want to travel on your cost. I asked them to show me receipt but they don't and the cost gong higher and higher after negotiation, I suspect there are corruption happening.

5. Facility
I dont think QS need any special facilities, so i wont comment.

6. Pros of this course
Dr A is an angel in this course and yes, thats all.
