Govt urged to extend paternity leave

PETALING JAYA: Family experts have urged the government to extend paternity leave beyond the current seven days so that fathers can be present at critical times when their support is most needed.

Family counselor Renee Ang said longer paternity leave would allow fathers to be more involved in their newborn’s early stages to provide essential support to their partners.

“The father’s presence during the initial weeks after childbirth can help mothers to recover faster and reduces the risk of postpartum mental health issues. It also fosters a stronger bond between father and child.

“His involvement during this period can also significantly contribute to the emotional and psychological well-being of the mother and newborn.”

Additionally, Ang said the early bonding between father and child contributes to fostering a secure attachment, which is foundational for the newborn’s emotional and social development.

By being actively involved, she said fathers help reduce the stress and exhaustion that mothers often experience, allowing them to recover more quickly and bond better with their newborns.

“When fathers are present, mothers tend to experience less stress and anxiety, which can lead to better mental health outcomes for both the mother and newborn.”

She said this shared responsibility also promotes a sense of teamwork and strengthens the family unit, laying the groundwork for a healthy and supportive family environment.

“The absence of fathers post-childbirth can weaken the bond between father and child when the latter grows older, and may lead to long-term implications for family dynamics.”

Meanwhile, Focus on Family Malaysia – a not-for-profit organisation that helps families to thrive – executive director Benny Kong said paternal involvement early in childbirth leads to healthier outcomes.

He said the birth of a child is a profound moment that marks a new chapter filled with joy, challenges and responsibilities. Hence, fathers play a crucial role in the early stages of parenthood.

“For example, after the wife has breastfed the baby, the husband must take over the burping and putting him to bed, take charge of diaper changes and share the night shifts when the baby awakens.

“Fathers must have a strong bond with their newborn during the early stages of birth, especially having skin-to-skin contact with the baby.”

Kong said the initial weeks after childbirth are important for establishing a solid family foundation, when fathers are more involved in the newborn’s day-to-day care.

He said while much attention has traditionally been focused on the mother’s role, the father’s presence during the early stages after childbirth is equally critical.

“Fathers provide essential support to the mother, helping her recover from childbirth, reducing her stress levels and contributing to a healthier postpartum experience.

“Research shows that fathers who are actively involved from the beginning tend to form stronger bonds with their children, which positively impacts the child’s long-term development and the overall family dynamics.”

Hence, Kong said the current seven days leave for fathers under the Employment Act 1955 (Act 265) is insufficient and urged the government to consider a longer paid paternity leave.

“The father’s presence and bonding with the child during the initial stages post-delivery is highly critical, so paternity leave should be extended for a longer period,” he said.

https://thesun.my/local-news/govt-urged-to-...eave-IM12877708

Spends RM11.5k to be a Volunteer at Paris Olympics

For sports enthusiasts, being in Paris to witness the majestic Olympic Games is a dream come true. A Malaysian woman, however, spent nearly RM12,000 to go to Paris for a volunteer job in the Olympics.

In her Facebook posts, Andrea shared that she has always been a huge fan of Paris, and it was her 4th visit to the country, which was the most memorable visit. If you’re wondering why, Andrea said it was due to her love for sports, too.

“It’s for the experience, and it’s the Olympics! I’ve been watching it since my high school days, and I’m a sporty person too.”

How much did Andrea spend and what was her job description?

In her post, Andrea briefly broke down her expenditures, which included a one-way ticket to Paris that cost her approximately RM3,800. Other costs include,

Airbnb accommodation (approximately RM6,500)
Food (approximately RM1,200)

The expenditures totalled up to RM11,500.

Andrea saved a lot on transportation as she walked 30 minutes to her workplace from her place of stay. As for food, Andrea spent around EUR15 (approximately RM73) on dinner each day and had oatmeal with milk and protein bars for breakfast. Lunch was provided at her workplace.

As for her volunteer job, Andrea admitted that it can be boring at times but it was all about the experience.Olympic jobs are divided into paid (working for 3 months or a year) and unpaid (volunteer) positions. Registration for Olympic volunteers is usually open months before the commencement.

“You have to be at least 18 years old, proficient in English or French and be able to work for more than 10 days.”

“The job of an Olympic volunteer is to guide the audience to their seats to watch the games. At the same time, I got to watch the games on the spot, too! It’s all about the experience and I finally got to tick off one of the items on my bucket list.”

Andrea also had the luxury of taking pictures with athletes and other crew members from around the world during her volunteer job.

“Thank you, Paris, thank you, Olympics, for giving me such a beautiful memory.”

Volunteer in LA Olympics 2028, anyone?

In a brief conversation with WORLD OF BUZZ, Andrea said that she felt lucky for the experience. When asked if she would return as a volunteer in future Olympic events, Andrea said no and highlighted that her experience in Paris has sufficed.

“Once in my life is enough, I have other plans too,” Andrea told WORLD OF BUZZ.

With the next Olympics set to take place in Los Angeles, USA in 2028, Andrea also shared some insights you need to consider if you’re interested in the volunteer job. Andrea hinted that the application for a volunteer position in the Los Angeles Olympics might be tougher.

“You need to have a US Visa, and the cost of living there is higher than Paris. I doubt RM10,000 will be enough, and the transportation there is not as convenient as in Paris.”

Andrea also reminded others that volunteers are usually required to stand for up to 6 hours, so physical health is important.

Andrea’s experience is truly a 1-in-a-million kind of opportunity! Are you up for a volunteer position in the Olympics?

https://www.facebook.com/andreawxin95/posts...pkLtPDVi2tSq4Ql

https://worldofbuzz.com/thank-you-for-the-b...paris-olympics/

Cancer 4th leading cause of death in MY

KUALA LUMPUR: Cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in Malaysia, increasing from 10.5 per cent in 2021 to 12.6 per cent in 2022, according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) 2023 report.

Health Minister Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad today said that based on Malaysia’s 2023 Health Facts, cancer is also a leading cause of death in private hospitals, accounting for 26.44 per cent and the fourth leading cause of death in government hospitals (9.29 per cent).

“This high mortality can also be linked with the detection of the disease at advanced stages, namely stages three and four, which account for over 60 per cent of all reported cancer cases, according to a report by the Malaysia National Cancer Registry report,“ he said in a statement.

According to the registry, 168,822 new cancer cases were reported over five years from 2017 to 2021.

Dr Dzulkefly said breast cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, lymphoma, and liver cancer are the top five cancers with the highest incidence rates during the period.

He called on Malaysians to continue practising a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition, physical activities, avoiding alcohol and not smoking in conjunction with the World Cancer Day celebration that carries the ‘Close the Care Gap’ theme.

He said Malaysians need to support the ministry’s efforts in preventing cancer in the country, such as getting the hepatitis B vaccine for babies under the National Immunisation programme and the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for 13-year-old girls.

“Undergo cancer screening for early detection because detecting cancer at an early stage can improve survival rates, reduce morbidity among cancer patients and subsequently enhance the quality of life for cancer patients,“ he said.

On the Ministry of Health (MOHE) aspirations, he said the ministry would ensure that the people receive comprehensive services that are not limited by their affordability, including healthcare for cancer patients.

“Besides that, the mission to enhance health promotion and disease prevention, including cancer, by strengthening public health functions will be continued through promotional and preventive activities, especially at MOHE primary health facilities,“ he added.

The World Cancer Day celebration this year emphasizes cancer care that focuses on the overall needs of patients, including the importance of the patient’s physical and psychological well-being. - Bernama

Not easy to investigate high profile figures - PM

KLANG: It is not easy to conduct investigations on high-profile figures, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

As such, he urged the public to support the government’s efforts to investigate top individuals, including those with the title of Tun, in connection with the misappropriation of government funds.

“We will go after the crooks, I don’t care... When we want to take action (against these individuals), the people get angry, saying that this Prime Minister is too harsh. For me, this is strange; you should support it (investigations) It’s not easy, you know, to investigate a Tun.

“Investigating a village chief is easy, investigating a school teacher is even easier. I want to investigate the big shots who steal big money....think it’s easy? It’s not. We want to protect this country, don’t let them steal the people’s wealth,” he said while speaking at the National Ponggal Festival 2024 celebration at the Klang Municipal Council Square @ Padang Chetty here last night.

On Jan 17, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirmed that they had taken statements from a former Prime Minister’s son believed to be related to his business dealings in the late 1990s.

Prior to that, Tun Daim Zainuddin’s wife, Toh Puan Nai’mah Abdul Khalid, and their two children were at the MACC headquarters to assist in an investigation believed to be related to the former Finance Minister and businessman.

In December, the MACC seized the Menara Ilham building in Kuala Lumpur, believed to be connected to a case involving the misappropriation of over RM2.3 billion in state funds, implicating a corporate figure and a former senior minister.

Meanwhile, Anwar reminded Indian community leaders not to be carried away by extreme sentiments that would not benefit the country.

He said all races are now demanding the prompt resolution of issues, and the government will use the just and fair MADANI concept for the benefit of all parties.

“To address the issues faced by the Indian community, we not only allocated RM100 million through the Malaysian Indian Transformation Unit (MITRA), but we also address them through other programmes such as (upgrading) school toilets, (eradicating) hardcore poverty, civil servants’ homes, and RM30 million through the National Entrepreneurial Group Economic Fund (TEKUN).”

“I have also asked all ministries, including the Ministry of Finance, the Human Resources Ministry and the Ministry of National Unity to identify the issues faced by the people regardless of race.

Anwar also said that after the government had successfully eradicated hardcore poverty in Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan, he is now awaiting a comprehensive report from Selangor within two weeks regarding similar progress.

“For sure, we can manage Selangor well, with good results and the capability to resolve issues. I am confident that Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan can address poverty-related problems,” he said. - Bernama

This is clear," he told reporters after launching the Media City Complex at Angkasapuri here on Wednesday (Oct 26).

Ismail Sabri was asked to comment on social media speculation that Najib would be pardoned and be Pekan MP again if Barisan Nasional and Umno won the 15th General Election (GE15).

He stressed that Najib's lawyers had done their work in filing an application for the Federal Court to review its Aug 23 decision, and filing for a Royal pardon.

"The court will make a decision and we will allow the judiciary to come up with its own conclusions," said Ismail Sabri.

He added that the Pardons Board would also make its own decision on Najib's case.

"Umno has no power (to do such things), and we respect the judicial system.

"Umno has no power to simply release anyone," said Ismail Sabri, who is also the party's vice-president.

Najib was sentenced to 12 years’ jail and fined RM210mil after he was convicted on seven charges brought against him for abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust over SRC International funds amounting to RM42mil.

He is currently serving his sentence in Kajang Prison after the Federal Court upheld the verdict.

MUAR, Oct 23 — Police are investigating the commotion at the Malam Mesra Muo event organised by the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) at a restaurant in Jalan Bakri here last night.

Muar district police chief ACP Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the investigation into the incident, which occurred at about 9.35pm, was carried out under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

The commotion is believed to have started when the guests in the hall came out and confronted about 30 masked individuals who were shouting, which later led to an incident of throwing bottles and firecrackers, he said in a statement today.

Raiz Mukhliz advised the public not to speculate and spread baseless rumours through any communication platform and social media.

Meanwhile, Muar Muda information chief Muhammad Amir Fiqri Mustapha said his party would continue cooperating with the police to find the mastermind behind the second commotion incident.

On Oct 18, Johor Police Chief Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said five police reports were lodged over a ruckus that occurred during a ceramah organised by Muda in Parit Jawa two days earlier. — Bernama

Ahmad Faizal unfazed by Anwar challenge in Tambun

IPOH: Bersatu deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu (pix) is determined to defend the Tambun parliamentary seat although Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced he would be contesting there in next month’s general election (GE15).

Ahmad Faizal said his confidence was based on the support he received from volunteers and supporters of Perikatan Nasional (PN) in Tambun.

“Therefore, we take it as a responsibility to continue serving in our home ground,” he said in a statement today.

In GE14, Ahmad Faizal won Tambun on a PH ticket in a three-cornered fight against Barisan Nasional (BN) and PAS candidates, polling 38,661 votes for a 5,320-vote majority.

Ahmad Faizal, who is also Perak PN chairman, said anyone is welcome to contest the Tambun seat.

He hoped the campaign would be conducted fairly.

Anwar won the Port Dickson parliamentary seat with a 23,560-vote majority in a seven-cornered contest in a by-election in October 2018.

He had previously contested in Permatang Pauh.-Bernama

Doing exercise, workouts at work must continue

I REMEMBER reading when Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad became prime minister for the second time in 2018, he urged office staff to do brief 15-minute workouts in the morning at their office before starting work. The practice should be continued.

The call by the world’s oldest prime minister, who was then 93, urging government offices and the private sector to allocate 15 minutes for exercise to create a healthy culture and lifestyle must be lauded.

Whether a person is in the civil service or private sector, many of their employers have gym facilities where staff can exercise during lunch breaks or after work.

Some employers use the services of a gym instructor, with some staff even acting as fitness trainers.

Mahathir is a living example and role model for exercise as he is known for his cycling in Putrajaya and horse riding when he was much younger.

Mahathir is also known for his disciplined approach when it comes to the type of food and portion he consumes.

Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has allocated RM340 million for the Youth and Sports Ministry in Budget 2023, to organise community sports for Keluarga Malaysia and our national sports day, which never fails to draw Malaysians from all walks of life.

A major portion of the allocation is also for elite sports, our podium programmes and our athletes competing in international sporting events.

What is worrying is that Malaysia has been labelled an obese nation, with over 51% of adults either obese or overweight when compared with Asean countries.

This increases the risk of diabetes, hypertension and heart disease which have claimed many lives.

There are far too many deaths due to these diseases, some of which are preventable.

It is no secret that regular 15-minute exercises at the workplace before work begins, or after work, goes a long way to improving a person’s health, including a good and healthy diet.

This can reduce the death rate from non-communicable diseases.

Given how critical fitness is to overall health, I think it is worth exploring the possibility of exercising at the workplace as this is where most of us will spend a good part of our lives.

Without a doubt, regular exercise promotes better health and well-being.

It helps to control weight, reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes, improve mental health and, in the workplace, push employees to be more productive and engaging.

As a former human resources senior manager, our office had a small gym and yoga room, as well as showers and changing rooms.

Our facilities were modest compared with other multinational companies I served with throughout my career.

The facilities were always used. Yoga classes were packed before work, at lunch and after work.

In the gym, volunteers from our company were conducting boot camps and cross-training classes.

When it comes to promoting fitness at the workplace, dedicated facilities and organised teams such as these are hardly necessities.

Having the right workplace culture is far more important.

Anyone can block off half an hour for exercise during the day at the workplace, provided it does not interfere with one’s job responsibilities.

It encourages physical fitness and healthy lifestyle habits that will reduce the death toll due to diseases, foster healthy muscles, joints and bones, and enhance a person’s mental and physical well-being.

C.
SPR jadi tumpuan esok, umum tarikh penting PRU15

- Bernama
