KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will undergo a heart procedure at Serdang Hospital next week, according to media reports today, as his family appealed for privacy during his treatment.

Counsel Farhan Shafee confirmed to Free Malaysia Today (FMT) that Najib would undergo the procedure but said he could not reveal its timing or location.

“The family has asked for privacy. We will provide updates from time to time,” he told FMT.

Separately, New Straits Times (NST) reported that the procedure is scheduled to take place at Serdang Hospital next week.

Najib’s special officer, Ahmad Lutfi Azhar, also told the newspaper that the former prime minister was in stable condition.

“He is now in stable condition,” Ahmad Lutfi said in a brief WhatsApp message, according to NST.

Najib, 72, is serving a six-year prison sentence after being convicted in the SRC International corruption case. His current sentence is due to end on August 23, 2028.

He is also appealing a separate High Court conviction for abuse of power and money laundering linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, for which he was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. That sentence will only take effect after he completes his current jail term.

This is not the first time Najib has required hospital treatment while in custody. In September 2022, he was admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital after suffering fluctuations in his blood pressure

The four-story shop office project is situated near the intersection of Jalan Permatang Pauh, Jalan Telaga Air and Jalan Siram in Butterworth, mainland Penang.

It is part of a broader 60-acre integrated commercial and residential precinct known as RU Square which also encompasses sister projects like Nanyang Street and Kings Galleria. As per the Jayamas Property FB post, the project has been “sold out” as of Dec 17, 2024.

Interestingly, some Penangites saw this as further evidence of the invading Chinese Mainlanders trespassing onto their little corner of paradise.

It was noted that Raja Uda was predominantly Chinese, so why the need for a Chinatown, unless it is for Mainlanders.

It was further noted with some apprehension by some observers that the island was already flooded with foreign businesses.

This sentiment was echoed by a Penangite who claimed that George Town was “over run” by Mainlanders. This was exemplified by the number of eateries catering to this demographic.

KUALA LUMPUR: Muar member of parliament Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will embark on a 170km thanksgiving run from the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya to Muar after the Federal Court upheld his acquittal on Monday.

He announced the run during the BASScast podcast, which he co-hosts with his fiancée, Bella Astillah, today.

The run will begin after the Dewan Rakyat sitting ends on Thursday, with Syed Saddiq expected to arrive in Muar on Sunday.

He said the run was a gesture of gratitude and a tribute to Muar voters who continued to support him throughout his six-year legal battle.

"A week before the 2022 General Election, I was going back and forth to court. Usually, candidates lose under such circumstances.

"But the people of Muar gave me a second chance despite everything I was facing. Insya-Allah, next year marks 10 years of my service, and I remain deeply indebted to them," he said.

Syed Saddiq said he chose to start the run at the Palace of Justice as a tribute to the judiciary, which he described as the people's final bastion of justice.

The run will also double as a fundraising campaign for the Muar community.

He aims to raise RM200,000 through collaborations with several brands and an online donation drive to provide iPads for university students in need and food baskets for underprivileged families.

He also pledged to channel RM500,000 in scholarships as part of his efforts to give back to the people of Muar.

Meanwhile, Bella said she would accompany him throughout the journey, possibly by bicycle or motorcycle, in a show of support.
