750k, landed or condo?

For 750k, what would you buy?

Old landed in suburbs or ulu place. For old landed, it would need to be under 650k since you would need to spend quite a bit to fix it up. Maybe in Kepong or Cheras or some ulu place like Setia Alam, Putra Heights, Kota Kemuning. For 750k, it might not even be enough to fully do up the landed so it may be in a semi old state if you run out of budget. Probably safety would be an issue too.

Or condo in good place. For 750k, most places will have options, so almost anywhere in Klang Valley is good. Bukit Jalil, Mont Kiara, PJ, KL City. Condo would be shiny and new, and comes with security.

What is your choice?

Practically speaking. Most people only need an Axia/Bezza/Saga/Persona. Around 80-90% of people. The other 10-20% maybe can use Alza or X50/x70. Buying other cars is a waste of money and the only reason you buy other cars is because want to tunjuk gaya.

Cars are so expensive in Malaysia, a lot of people are having debt issues yet they want fancy cars. It's easily a years salary or more for most people. Dont buy an expensive car if you want to keep your debt under control.

Malaysia there is this massive indoctrination that a car is needed. Malaysians are so pampered and unwilling to walk that to go somewhere less than 500m away, they must drive over instead of walking. This mental framework or crutch is the reason why Malaysians until now still think a car is needed to live in KL. Maybe if you are sales person or someone that needs to travel about, yes, you may need a car or bike. But for the office worker, public transport is perfectly fine! Just stay somewhere near a train station, and you won't need to have a car. The LRT and MRT and monorails are fine. The KTM is kinda shit, but getting better these days. So, in 2022, I really don't see why you need to get a car. For intercity, there's the bus, and for the occasional situation where train and bus doesn't cut it, take the Grab.

I never needed a car in Malaysia. Because I have lived outside of Malaysia after graduation, I am perfectly fine with public transport. When I go back to KL every couple of months, the train and Grab serves me just fine. I don't see much difference from Singapore in most cases. When a foreigner visits Malaysia, they are also fine with the public transport. It's only the Malaysian that has the mindset that car is needed.

Somehow when Malaysian migrate overseas, they just accept the message that public transport is fine. Like when come to SG, Malaysians think that SG public transport is perfectly fine, because that's what people tell them to believe. Which is mostly true, but the point is the Malaysian just believe whatever they are spoonfed to believe. Like public transport in overseas = OK, public transport in Malaysia = shit.

Get rid of the mental crutch and entitled mindset, you don't need a car. Really. Especially if you want to save money for your future, and especially when you complain the cost of living is high.

I don't know where people get this idea, maybe got tricked by some stupid YouTuber that is super ignorant of things in SG. Or maybe the data not updated to reflect 2022 reality.

To buy a car these days is 150k SGD with 30% or 40% downpayment required.

A room that used to cost SGD600 to rent in 2019 is now about 1K SGD to rent in 2022. This is price of HDB room that you share with landlord.

All the rents have gone up by about 50% over the last year.

If you are looking for your own space? Yeah, you're looking at 2K SGD and up. That's for a single room HDB. If you want studio/1br condo? 3K and above for outskirt ya....

If you want nearer town studio/1br is SGD4K plus.

3br HDB? 3.5k and up.

So, I know you see 1SGD = 3.2MYR and thinking wanna go SG to work and accept a low pay. Don't come lah. 3-4k SGD is now bangla level pay. If you come in at that level, I don't know if you can ever earn enough to own anything in Singapore. Or you want to be a migrant in SG forever? If your plan is to get PR then Sinkie, at that pay level, I'm not sure if you can even get PR. Need to think further ahead rather than just the next 2-3 years lah.

If you want to come to SG, make sure you get a decent pay yeah. If not, life in SG is just like a bangla.

SG is the new HK and rents are going to be higher than HK soon, if it isn't already.

Stay on in Singapore or move to JB?

So, my situation is like this.

Both me and my wife is working currently. Have a kid. Wife is still Malaysian so I can still move back to JB.

With the current rent and exchange rate, I can easily rent out my HDB for over 3K SGD, which should be around RM10k.

Then perhaps can move back to JB, my wife can quit her job, we get some nice big house in JB semi-D or bungalow.

My kid will go to international school.

Downside is I have to commute from JB to Singapore, but I only have to do it twice a week with the hybrid arrangement these days.

Else the option is to stay on in Singapore, maybe I can upgrade to condo but at the end of the day, the house size will be more or less around 1k sqft or slighly above it. Landed is out of the question.

My kid will go to local school and my wife will probably continue working. And I think I may not get a car at all in Singapore. All in all a normal middle class lifestyle.

So which choice is better?

JB can get a nicer lifestyle but need to worry about the safety aspect and the commute is kinda killer.

SG my kids can be educated in SG but just average joe kind of lifestyle. And maybe less hassle commuting.

So which choice is better?

So I was sending my kid to school today. We bumped into one of my kid's ex-teachers. In the past 2 plus years she was always wearing mask, so I never saw what she looked like. Now, I never thought of her as a beauty, but then I never gave any thought to what she looked like anyway. But today she was unmasked and OMG!!!!! MY EYEEEESSSS!!!!! IT BURNNNSSSS!!!!!

So now I understand why some people should wear mask. If they are fugly. Wearing masks is protection to other people's eyes. Why are you still wearing masks??? Are you fugly? Otherwise why would you wear a mask?

Btw....no pics...I was still in shock after seeing the teacher that I couldn't take any pics.

Disclaimer: If it's a wild cat or dog with minimal maintenance it's ok I guess.

Was just talking with my colleague and she just bought a kitten for SGD8500. WTF. That costs more than giving birth to a human in most cases, perhaps more. Then there's the maintenance aspects of the pet which could be hundreds each month or more. How can an average income earner with kids justify spending that much money on an animal, money that could have been spent on your actual kids or setting aside for their future needs. We are talking about potentially tens of thousands over the pet's life. I'd argue that even if you don't currently have kids but are planning to have kids in future, that's irresponsible to your future kids too.

Isn't having pets financially irresponsible?

What does developed country mean?

When I was young, I thought that people in developed country enjoy a high standard of living, almost everyone living comfortably.

Now I see developed countries got lots of druggies and homeless folk, people that are struggling to put food on the table, just the same like other developing countries like Malaysia and Thailand. So what is the difference between developed and developing countries? Doesn't seem like people in developed countries even have a better standard of living. There are a few countries that do indeed have a high standard of living (eg. Nordic countries) but other than that, it seems like the same.
