Ketua Pesuruhjaya Suruhanjaya Pencegahan Rasuah Malaysia (SPRM) Azam Baki mengesahkan seorang bekas perdana menteri dan bekas pegawainya akan dipanggil dalam masa terdekat untuk membantu siasatan susulan dakwaan penyelewengan dana kerajaan bernilai jutaan ringgit.

Dia berkata demikian ketika ditanya pemberita sama ada “perdana menteri kesembilan” akan menjadi orang terakhir disiasat.

Proton S70 to be cheaper than X50, Honda City and Toyota Vios; priced from under RM85k – analyst

The Proton S70 is expected to be priced lower than the X50 SUV, as well as its sedan rivals the B-segment Honda City and Toyota Vios, Berita Harian has reported.

Production of the S70 has commenced following the discontinuation of the the Exora MPV after 14 years of being in production, and the S70 will be marketed as a C-segment model that will bring increased competition within the segment, according to RHB Investment Bank analyst Syahril Hanafiah.

The Proton X50 is priced from RM86,300 for the base 1.5T Standard variant, and goes up to RM113,000 for the top Flagship variant.

In terms of the S70’s intended rivals, the Honda City is priced from RM84,900 for the base 1.5 S variant, while the top 1.5 RS combustion-engined variant is priced at RM99,900. For the hybrid e:HEV, this is priced at RM111,900. From Toyota is the Vios, which is sold in Malaysia in two variants; the 1.5 E at RM89,600, and the 1.5 G at RM95,900.

The S70 is expected to start from under the RM85,000 mark when its pricing is announced, undercutting its key B-segment sedan rivals in doing so. The S70 could compete not just against C-segment rivals the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla, but could also disrupt the B-segment sedan market by offering a more powerful engine, an uprated transmission and larger dimensions.

At its base, the Proton S70 is built from the B-segment Modular Architecture (BMA) that also underpins the X50 SUV, and like its SUV sibling, the S70 is based on an existing Geely model in the fourth-generation Emgrand.

Numerous changes have been carried out, such as the replacing of the 1.5 NA engine and CVT gearbox from the Emgrand to the turbocharged three-cylinder engine and 7DCT in the S70, along with ride and handling that has been tuned for Malaysian roads.

Huawei Kirin A2 chip launched and we were right

Back in May, we reported that Huawei is preparing a Kirin A2 wearable chip and it’s finally launched. Showing that we were right about this massive revelation.

This launch confirms that Huawei has long-term plans for future smart wearables. The product using this product includes smart audio and smartwatches. The FreeBuds Pro 3 is also equipped with new Kirin A2 chipset.

Huawei knows how to design a chip but the challenge was to print the design. Since these types of chip doesn’t require advanced chip processing tools, Huawei didn’t have to stretch too far to manufacture them. Instead, the available tools came in handy.

The first version of Kirin A series chip came in 2019, the same year as the US export ban. However, Huawei was allowed (at that time) to print new chips via Taiwan’s TSMC.

In 2020, Huawei cut off from the global supply chain as well and it stopped manufacturing new chipsets. The company collected a big chunk of Kirin A1 for various wearables devices launched until 2021.

Afterward, Huawei said in multiple instances, the company didn’t fire chip engineers from its subsidiary – HiSilicon. During this timeline, the company had immense financial issues.

HiSilicon is known as the largest chip-designing company in China. It was also one of the most recognized chip firms in the global semiconductor market before the US sanctions. Over the past three years, HiSilicon kept on researching new designs that could work lowest node.

Chip designs such as Kirin A2 reflect Huawei’s effort to work with the domestic manufacturer. On the other hand, keeping the process and the processor secret is one of the most important aspects that the company is worried about.

Still, unlike smartphones, Huawei didn’t shy away from showing this new chipset to the world. It’s confirmed by Huawei itself that Kirin A2 chip is launched and it’s here for consumers.

France halts iPhone 12 sales over radiation levels

France has ordered Apple to stop selling the iPhone 12 for emitting too much electromagnetic radiation.

On Tuesday, the French watchdog which governs radio frequencies also told the tech giant to fix existing phones.

The ANFR has advised Apple that if it cannot resolve the issue via a software update, it must recall every iPhone 12 ever sold in the country.

But the World Health Organization has previously sought to allay fears about radiation emitted by mobile phones.

It says on its website there is no evidence to conclude that exposure to low level electromagnetic fields is harmful to humans.

The iPhone 12 was first released in September 2020, and it is still sold worldwide.

Apple told the BBC it was contesting the ANFR's review, and said it had provided the regulator with lab results from the tech giant itself and third parties which show the device is compliant with all the relevant rules.

It said the iPhone 12 was recognised as being compliant with regulations on radiation levels worldwide.

France's digital minister Jean-Noel Barrot told French newspaper Le Parisien the decision was due to radiation levels above the acceptable threshold, according to Reuters.

He said the ANFR found the iPhone 12's Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) was above what is legally allowed.

"Apple is expected to respond within two weeks," he said.

"If they fail to do so, I am prepared to order a recall of all iPhones 12 in circulation. The rule is the same for everyone, including the digital giants."

France will share its findings with other regulators across the trading bloc - which Barrot said could result in "a snowball effect".

The ANFR requires the SAR of devices to be checked against two different ways a phone is used.

First there is a "membre" - or limb - check, for when a phone is in close contact with a person's body, such as when it is held or placed in a trouser pocket. The SAR limit for this is four watts per kilogram.

The regulator said the device's "membre" SAR was 5.74 watts per kilogram - higher than the limit.

There is also a check for when a phone is slightly further away, such as when it is in a bag or jacket pocket, but the iPhone 12's SAR measure came in under this threshold.

The news first broke on Tuesday in France - the same day that Apple unveiled its new iPhone 15.

The new phone is the first since 2012 to feature an alternative charging port, and Apple says it will sell an adapter so people can use their existing cables.

It comes as the Chinese foreign ministry issued a rebuttal against media reports which claimed government agencies had told staff to stop using iPhones.

It said China has not issued any laws, regulations or policies blocking the use of Apple's products.

TikTok dipadam, Sanusi dakwa M'sia nak jadi Korea Utara

Selepas akaun TikTok miliknya dipadam, Menteri Besar Kedah Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor mendakwa Malaysia sedang bergerak menjadi seperti negara Korea Utara di bawah pemerintahan Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Menurutnya, ia akan menyebabkan pihaknya sukar untuk menjawab mengenai isu-isu semasa dan serangan dilemparkan pihak lawan Perikatan Nasional (PN).

“Selepas daripada ini akan datang kepada tuan-tuan berita-berita yang sangat mengerikan, sangat menakutkan. Hari ini saja saya kena ‘tembak’ lima kali.

“Macam-macam kes, kes banglo, kes itu kes ini, malam ini kes REE (nadir bumi) pula. Semua itu ada jawapan, tapi depa (mereka) padam TikTok saya.

“Buka TikTok tengok dah tak ada. Kita baru tengah popular kan, tapi itulah medan kita nak jawab habislah. Kita tak boleh masuk televisyen depa tak bagi, tak boleh masuk radio.

“Kita pakai TikTok dengan Facebook saja. Facebook budak-budak tak tengok dah sekarang mereka kata itu untuk orang tua,” katanya dalam satu rakaman video dimuat naik Twitter HakarahDaily, hari ini.

Dia memaklumkan perkara itu melalui hantaran ringkas di Facebook, malam tadi.

“Darai dah barai,” katanya ringkas disusuli tangkap layar yang akaun TikTok berkenaan.

Perkataan ‘darai’ digunakan Sanusi itu merupakan slanga atau dialek Kedah membawa maksud ‘seorang lelaki berperawakan atau berpakaian seperti wanita’, manakala ‘barai’ difahamkan membawa maksud ‘musnah atau hancur lebur’.

Semakan Malaysiakini mendapati akaun TikTok milik Sanusi masih ada namun segala hantaran yang dibuat sebelum-sebelum ini sudah tidak dapat diakses.

Sanusi antara lain turut berkata, pihak kerajaan takut terhadap kebebasan media.

“Takutnya mereka kepada media yang bebas, mereka padam habis, 5.2 juta (kesukaan) dah koman-koman pun, pengikut pun berjuta juga.

“Nak buat (akaun) lain nak cari seorang-seorang (pengikut) payah juga kan? Lambat. Itulah zaman pemerintahan PH ini, negara Malaysia sedang bergerak menjadi Korea Utara.

“Korea Utara ini negara komunis, dia sekat semua media tak bagi rakyat tahu apa-apa, dengar dan patuh saja,” ujarnya.

Terdahulu Sanusi terpalit dengan dakwaan menghina Sultan Selangor yang dilihat membandingkan pelantikan menteri besar di Kedah - merujuk kepada dirinya sendiri - dengan Selangor dan mengaitkan proses itu dengan pihak istana kedua-dua negeri.

Dalam ucapan sama, timbalan pesuruhjaya PAS Kedah itu juga melabel menteri besar sementara Selangor Amirudin Shari sebagai ahli politik cokia.

Ia mengundang protes pelbagai pihak. Media melaporkan lebih 30 laporan polis dibuat ke atas Sanusi.

Selain itu Ahli Dewan Diraja Selangor pula merujuk Pengarah Pilihan Raya PAS dan PN itu kepada polis.

Dalam aduannya, ahli Dewan Diraja Selangor Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa menganggap kenyataan dibuat Sanusi beberapa hari lalu sebagai sangat tidak bertanggungjawab.

Ia juga katanya boleh mencetuskan keresahan dan kekecohan dalam kalangan masyarakat khususnya di Selangor sekali gus meminta supaya pihak berkuasa menyekat media sosial milik Sanusi.

Malaysia menduduki tempat ke-73 dalam Reporters Without Borders (RSF), 2023 World Press Freedom Rankings, meningkat daripada 113 tahun lepas.

Ini kedudukan tertinggi yang pernah dicapai oleh Malaysia. Rekod sebelum ini dicatatkan pada 2020 apabila Malaysia berada di kedudukan 101 daripada 180 negara.

Malaysia telah mendahului kedudukan dalam kalangan negara Asean selama dua tahun berturut-turut.

Kedudukan negara Asean yang lain seperti berikut Thailand (106), Indonesia (108), Singapura (129), Filipina (132), Kemboja (147), Vietnam (178), Laos (160) dan Myanmar (173).

Namun, Timor-Leste, yang sedang menunggu kemasukan ke Asean, menduduki tempat kesepuluh, malah lebih baik dari New Zealand (13) dan Australia (27).

Bank Negara raises OPR to 3 percent

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) unexpectedly raised its benchmark interest rate on Wednesday, citing a need to normalise monetary accommodation as the economy was resilient and it needed to manage persistent inflation.

The overnight policy rate was raised by 25 basis points to 3 percent. A Reuters poll of 25 economists had largely expected Bank Negara Malaysia to hold its overnight policy rate at 2.75 percent, with just four forecasting a rate hike.

BNM had kept rates unchanged at its two previous meetings this year as it sought to assess the impact of four consecutive hikes totalling 100 basis points in 2022.

The Southeast Asian economy has bounced back strongly from a pandemic-induced slump, with growth hitting a 22-year high of 8.7 percent in 2022 but slowing global demand has clouded the outlook for its exports of energy, commodities, and high-tech goods.

BNM said in a statement that the latest developments point towards further expansion in economic activity in the first quarter of 2023, driven by strong domestic demand, household spending and better labour market conditions.

While inflation was expected to moderate, core inflation would remain at elevated levels amid firm demand conditions, it said.

“With the domestic growth prospects remaining resilient, the MPC judges that it is timely to further normalise the degree of monetary accommodation,” the central bank said, referring to its monetary policy committee.

The consumer price index in March grew 3.4 percent from a year earlier, its slowest pace in nine months, government data showed.

The central bank has forecast headline inflation to average between 2.8 and 3.8 percent in 2023, compared with 3.3 percent last year.

Malaysia’s economy was expected to grow 4-5 percent this year, BNM has said.
