KUALA LUMPUR: Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd is setting its sights on becoming a regional industrial powerhouse by 2030, driven by plans to grow its overseas footprint and boost international revenue.

Group chief corporate services officer Izzam Ibrahim said the Sarawak-based conglomerate, now in its 51st year, has spent the past three years repositioning itself for expansion into Southeast Asia and other strategic markets.

Currently, about 20 per cent of our revenue comes from overseas, but by 2030 we aim for the majority to be derived from exports and international income," he said during a visit to Balai Berita Media Prima in Bangsar today.

He said this includes exporting cement and clinker, expanding property ventures abroad, and strengthening its oil and gas (O&G) services business.

Cahya Mata remains Sarawak's sole cement producer and is building a second clinker plant, Mambong Clinker Line 2, slated for completion in 2027.

The new facility will lower production costs, support state infrastructure projects and enable clinker exports to other states and neighbouring countries.

"The new clinker line will help us lower costs and strengthen our export potential," Izzam said, adding that the plant will feature waste heat recovery and carbon capture technology, capable of generating up to four megawatts of electricity.

Cahya Mata's international footprint has grown rapidly since it ventured into O&G services in 2022, focusing on drilling waste management. The group now operates in nine countries, including in the Middle East, Africa and Russia.

Despite Western sanctions on Russia, Izzam said operations there remain unaffected due to Malaysia's positive diplomatic ties with Moscow.

"The sanctions have actually opened new opportunities as many Western firms have exited the Russian market. Siberia holds some of the world's largest gas reserves, and our early presence gives us an advantage for long-term growth," he said.

He added that while global industries transition toward greener energy, hydrocarbons will remain essential, ensuring Cahya Mata's O&G relevance.

The company is also stepping up its environmental, social and governance efforts by reducing its carbon footprint and modernising its fleet with Euro 5 diesel engines.

It is developing digital systems to monitor vehicle emissions as part of its long-term net zero strategy.

"We may not be fully electric yet, but we are steadily moving toward lower-carbon operations," Izzam said.

PETALING JAYA: A former senior Treasury official has urged Malaysians not to question Petronas’s right to oil and gas resources in Sarawak, amid reports that negotiations between the national oil company and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) are deadlocked.

Nik Azmi Nik Daud said both Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg have issued statements recently acknowledging the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA) as the overarching oil and gas governance framework.

KUCHING, Jan 10 — A top executive of TV Sarawak (TVS) was arrested by police earlier this afternoon at TVS headquarters here.

At 2.15pm, police officers escorted the executive to his office at the TVS headquarters to conduct a search, which concluded at 3.15pm.

As of 3.30pm, authorities have yet to disclose the nature of the case or provide details regarding the timing and circumstances of the arrest.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Industrial Court has ordered AirAsia to pay RM268,620 as compensation and back wages to a former pilot after ruling he was constructively dismissed from the airline’s employment.

Chairman S Vanithamany handed down the decision in favour of Eric Koh last week.

Koh, who started working with the low-cost airline in July 2018, tendered his resignation after he was placed on furlough in 2022 during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The airline had reduced Koh’s basic salary by 75% during the period, citing border restrictions which had grounded flights.

The government has approved an additional RM100 million for road maintenance works throughout Peninsular Malaysia. According to deputy works minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, this will be utilised for periodic maintenance work on pavement and non-pavement roads.

He said that RM70 million will be used for 79 periodic pavement maintenance works, while the remaining RM30 million has been allocated for 200 non-pavement periodic maintenance works.

While welcome, the additional allocation won’t rectify everything, and more will undoubtedly be needed in the next budget. Works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi previously said that around RM4 billion is needed annually to maintain all federal roads in the country, but for several decades only around RM1 billion has been allocated annually for this purpose.

PETALING JAYA: A number of Unifi internet service users have taken to social media to complain of an outage that has taken place since yesterday evening.

Unifi is a service by Telekom Malaysia Bhd, offering internet access and several other services to residential and business customers through an optical fiber network.

Oh, Unifi. You are the national internet but having a breakdown on National Day. What an irony, one netizen said in a post.

Another netizen lamented the disrupted services she experienced for almost 12 hours. Too busy with National Day celebrations? she said with sarcasm.

Meanwhile, a resident in Kepong, who wished to remain anonymous, told FMT he noticed that his internet line had been slow since last night.

Upon checking with Unifi’s customer service yesterday, he was informed that the issue would be resolved by 11am today. However, today, he was told that the internet service provider needed until 4pm to fix the problem.

Another netizen said the Unifi internet has been slow for weeks and now gone.

If no internet service is available for many days, who is going to compensate me for the bill? she said on X.

I use Unifi internet because it’s the national internet for Malaysians, but the quality is lacking and users’ voices are not heard. This issue with the internet is not just a one-time occurrence … repeatedly, Unifi users have complained about your service, said another netizen.

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 29): Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd (MAG) said the reduction in its network, following multiple disruptions to its services that took place in recent weeks, involves 20% of its capacity.

This involves services across the routes of its three airlines — Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and Amal — within Malaysia, as well as Asean, North Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Greater China, South Asia and the Middle East.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — The government has given an assurance that all Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) leavers who obtained 10As or more, regardless of race and region, will be offered the opportunity to further their studies at the matriculation level starting this year.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision, which the Cabinet agreed to at a meeting on Friday (June 28), would not affect the existing quota for Bumiputera students.

He said details of the government’s bold decision to recognise the excellence of students while ensuring fairness in the country’s education system would be announced by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek tomorrow.

“This bold decision does not imply that we have solved the issue of fairness in education, there must be a willingness from the ministry, the private sector, non-governmental organisations, scholars and academia to accept the reality that much more needs to be done to ensure opportunities for children (especially) from the urban poor, rural or interior areas.

Toyota was among five carmakers, including Honda Motor Co and Mazda Motor Corp, found to have falsified or manipulated safety data while applying for certification.
