TOKYO: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has warned that the future of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being shaped by a small group of countries and corporations.
Speaking at the University of Tokyo today, Anwar said these actors control the AI infrastructure, models, platforms, and standards that much of the world depends on.

Anwar said the systems driving the new AI era require vast amounts of data, chips, energy, cloud infrastructure, and capital, and that these resources are “not distributed evenly or fairly”.

He said the imbalance is not merely a technical issue, but one that could affect sovereignty, democracy, and public accountability.

“Capitalists, owners, and conglomerates want to decide what civilisation entails, how wars, national destiny, and strategic value are rationalised, and even the future of democracy.

“But democracy is about participation. It is about fairness,” he said during a special lecture titled “Humanity in a Human-Machine Civilisation”.

Anwar said public institutions must remain accountable as AI becomes more embedded in government, work, and everyday life.

“The task before us is clear: we must build systems that serve human beings and enrich our humanity, not debase it,” he said.

While Anwar did not mention specifics, his remarks come amid growing international scrutiny about global AI development, which is increasingly concentrated in a handful of American tech giants.

AI systems depend heavily on advanced chips, which are mostly designed and manufactured by firms such as Nvidia and TSMC.

Most AI systems run on cloud platforms controlled by a few companies: Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

There have also been concerns about the use of commercial AI systems in military and intelligence work. AI company Anthropic has reportedly resisted the Pentagon’s demands to remove certain safeguards on its Claude models for defence use, including for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.

The dispute has raised broader questions over whether private technology firms, governments, or the public should decide how powerful AI systems are used in matters of war, security, and state power.

Nga Kor Ming says 4,000 litterbugs now paying fine

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — As of today, over 4,000 litterbugs have been caught so far, said Housing and Local Government (KPKT) minister Nga Kor Ming.

Nga said that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) now has 4,000 free social workers to help clean up the streets of KL.

This comes following major updates to the anti littering laws, where the government has introduced heavy fines of up to RM2,000 and mandatory community service orders (up to 12 hours) for minor offences like tossing cigarette butts, plastic bottles, or spitting in public.

“We now have 4,000 free social workers who will help us and DBKL sweep the streets for free.

“And they also have to pay us a RM2,000 fine at the same time,” Nga said.

Aside from working together with DBKL to stamp out litterbugs while also making the City Centre cleaner, Nga also pointed out that KL will be safer now, especially with the rollout of thousands of facial recognition and high definition closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras around the city.

“KL is going to have not 1,000 but 10,000 facial recognition and high definition CCTV. It will be just like in Shanghai and Beijing.

“There will no longer be any cases of snatching or stealing because the CCTV installed by DBKL can recognise your face and the Royal Malaysia Police will be waiting for you,” he said.

Previously in May, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh and Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud revealed the installation of 10,000 AI powered CCTV. These units are outfitted with high resolution sensors and facial recognition technology, allowing for real time coordination.

Se7en expecting 1st child, 3 years after marriage

South Korean celebrity couple Se7en and Lee Da-hae are expecting their first child together three years after their marriage.

They announced the news in a video shared on social media on May 20. “From two to three. Our little miracle is on the way,” they wrote in English on Instagram.

In the 20-second clip, Lee carried a pair of baby shoes and an ultrasound photo before Se7en revealed that he was wearing a cap with the word “Dad”. The couple then faced the camera with Lee wearing a cap with the word “Mom”.

Se7en, 41, whose real name is Choi Dong-wook, tied the knot with Lee, 42, in a glitzy ceremony in May 2023 after dating for about eight years.

428 aktivis Global Sumud Flotilla termasuk 29 rakyat Malaysia dibebaskan susulan tekanan antarabangsa yang semakin memuncak terhadap insiden penahanan aktivis flotila kemanusiaan yang berlaku di perairan antarabangsa sebelum ini.

Sumud Nusantara Command Center (SNCC) menjangkakan delegasi Malaysia akan berlepas pulang ke tanah air pada 23 Mei (Sabtu) dan dijangka tiba di Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) pada 24 Mei (Ahad).

SNCC turut memaklumkan bahawa pihaknya menerima pengesahan daripada Perdana Menteri Malaysia, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, bahawa Presiden Turkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdogan telah menggerakkan tiga pesawat Turkish Airlines ke Lapangan Terbang Ramon di wilayah Israel.

Dalam satu kenyataan SNCC memaklumkan pembebasan itu berlaku selepas gelombang kecaman dan tekanan diplomatik daripada pelbagai negara serta organisasi antarabangsa termasuk Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, United Nations dan European Union. Insiden tersebut sebelum ini mencetuskan demonstrasi dan kenyataan rasmi dari beberapa negara termasuk Itali, Turkiye, Sepanyol, Perancis, Belgium, Ireland, Kanada, Belanda, Jerman, Korea Selatan, Australia dan Portugal.

Menurut SNCC, tekanan berkenaan turut melibatkan tindakan diplomatik seperti ancaman sekatan ekonomi, saman undang-undang, pengeluaran nota diplomatik serta gesaan antarabangsa terhadap rejim Israel.

Situasi terkini
SNCC berkata, akibat tekanan berterusan termasuk implikasi reputasi antarabangsa, rancangan awal untuk menahan aktivis di Penjara Ketziot akhirnya digugurkan, dan semua tahanan dibebaskan tanpa syarat.

Kesemua 428 aktivis dilaporkan sedang dipindahkan menggunakan bas ke Lapangan Terbang Ramon sebelum diterbangkan ke Istanbul menerusi tiga penerbangan khas dengan kod TK6919, TK6921 dan TK6925 oleh Turkish Airlines.

“SNCC mengesahkan laporan terkini dari ADALAH bahawa semua 428 aktivis flotilla kini sedang dipindahkan menaiki bas menuju ke Lapangan Terbang Ramon dan dijangka sampai ke Istanbul menggunakan 3 penerbangan tajaan khas Kerajaan Turkiye dengan kod TK6919, TK6921 dan TK6925.

“Ketiga-tiga penerbangan khas Turkish Airlines tersebut dijangka berlepas dari tanah haram israel sekitar jam 8 malam waktu Malaysia,” katanya.

Pelbagai pihak tampil menegur Ahli Parlimen Pasir Puteh, Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, selepas tular video ceramahnya yang dikatakan membawa kisah tidak sahih dan menghina empat sahabat terdekat Nabi Muhammad SAW.

Seorang daripadanya ialah Ketua Pemuda PAS Selangor, Mohamed Sukri Omar, yang membuat teguran dalam satu kenyataan di Facebook.

Melalui hantaran berkenaan Mohamed Sukri turut menyarankan agar bekas Ketua Dewan Ulama PAS Pusat itu bertaubat serta memperbetulkan kenyataannya.

Menurut Mohamed Sukri kedudukan para sahabat Rasulullah bukan manusia biasa dalam sejarah Islam.

“Mereka adalah generasi yang dipilih oleh Allah untuk hidup bersama nabi, menerima wahyu secara langsung, mempertahankan Islam dengan darah dan air mata serta memikul amanah dakwah ketika dunia memusuhi kebenaran.

“Merekalah generasi yang meninggalkan rumah, harta, keluarga bahkan nyawa demi Islam.

"Ada yang diseksa di padang pasir, dipulaukan, dibunuh ahli keluarga sendiri, berhijrah meninggalkan tanah air dan berperang mempertahankan akidah,” katanya.

Bagaimanapun dalam hantara asal, mesej itu dibuat secara umum dan Mohamed Sukri tidak memetik sebarang nama. Dia bagaimanapun menyebut nama Nik Zawawi secara khusus di ruangan komen sebagai menjawab reaksi pembaca.

“Respon saya ini ke atas ceramah YB Dr Nik Zawawi. Saya takkan bela sesiapa pun yang mengatasi Nabi SAW dan para sahabat.

“Salah tetap salah, YB Dr Nik Zawawi perlu bertaubat dan betulkan kenyataan,” kata Sukri lagi.

Sejak semalam tular siri video memaparkan ceramah Nik Zawawi mengeluarkan kenyataan yang menggambarkan empat sahabat Rasulullah - Abu Bakar as-Siddiq, Umar al-Khattab, Usman al-Affan dan Ali Abi Talib - mempunyai sejarah hidup yang keji sebelum memeluk Islam.

Antara lain setiausaha Majlis Syura Ulama PAS itu mendakwa Sayidina Abu Bakar sebagai seorang "bapa ceti" yang gemar memeras orang miskin semasa berada dalam zaman Jahiliyah. Sayidina Umar pula digambarkannya sebagai lelaki yang zalim serta suka berzina sebelum memeluk Islam.

Difahamkan kenyataan itu disampaikan dalam satu program ceramah politik di Kuala Terengganu, pada hujung minggu lalu.

Mohamed Sukri berkata budaya menghina sahabat nabi atas nama kajian sejarah, kebebasan berfikir atau cakap lepas adalah budaya yang sangat berbahaya.

GERIK: Police have arrested a man who went viral after allegedly sexually harassing a woman by masturbating in a supermarket where she works here.

Gerik district police chief Superintendent Abdul Samad Othman said a report was lodged at 5.57pm yesterday by the victim, who is an employee of the supermarket.

Investigations revealed that the incident occurred at 3.33pm when the 25-year-old victim was startled after seeing the suspect unzip his trousers and began masturbating while looking in her direction.

"The victim, who was working at the supermarket, initially heard a sound resembling a zip being opened, prompting her to check. She then discovered the suspect engaging in the act.

"At the time, the suspect was seen committing the act while staring at the complainant. The complainant recorded the incident on her mobile phone and confronted him, prompting the suspect to flee the premises," he said in a statement today.

Abdul Samad said the 55-year-old suspect had since been arrested, and police would seek a remand order today to facilitate further investigations.

Earlier, a two-minute and 31-second video of the incident went viral, showing a woman, believed to be the supermarket employee, confronting a man who was seen holding himself indecently inside the premises.

KUALA LUMPUR, April 23 — Two men were reportedly arrested last night after police traced suspects linked to a shooting along Jalan Telawi in Bangsar.

According to The Star, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the suspects, aged 27 and 33, have been remanded for seven days — until next Wednesday.

"We arrested two local men to assist in investigations. A pistol with one live round and a replica firearm were also seized," he was quoted as saying.

The suspects were reportedly apprehended in Klang, Selangor at about 11.45pm.

Fadil said checks found one of the men had five prior offences, while the other had 17 cases on record.

He added investigations into the shooting were ongoing.

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has set June 10 to deliver its decision on a lawsuit filed by Lebanese jeweller Global Royalty Trading SAL against Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor over the loss of 43 pieces of jewellery worth RM67.4mil (US$14.57mil).

Judge Datuk Quay Chew Soon fixed the date on Wednesday (April 15) after the court was informed that contractor Chong Tong Leong was the final witness to testify.

The judge instructed Global Royalty to file written submissions by May 13, while Rosmah, 75, must respond by May 28. The decision will be delivered via Zoom.

Chong, 53, testified as the sixth witness for the third parties (the police and the government). He said he was hired by a man identified as Nadziff to renovate a unit at Pavilion Residences between March and May 2018.

He told the court that on May 14, 2018, three days before a police raid, he found several large suitcases in a room that were not there previously.

"I arrived alone at the unit between 11am and 12pm for an inspection before air-conditioning installation. Seeing the situation, I immediately left because I was worried something untoward might happen," he said.

The three-day hearing included testimony from Global Royalty managing director Samer Hassib Halimeh and Rosmah, who was the sole defendant.

Other third-party witnesses included former Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Amar Singh Ishar Singh and 1MDB investigating officer ACP Foo Wei Min.

Global Royalty sued Rosmah on March 29, 2023, claiming she falsely alleged that 44 pieces of jewellery sent to her on consignment were seized by police under anti-money laundering laws.

The company asserted that only one of the 44 items was in police custody, while the remaining 43 were missing. It claimed Rosmah shifted the responsibility to the government when the jewellery was in fact lost.

Iran says intelligence chief killed by strike

More now on the death of Iran's intelligence chief, with Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claiming responsibility for the killing of Majid Khademi.

The IDF has written on Telegram that his killing is "another severe blow" to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

When it comes to Iran acknowledging the deaths of its senior commanders in the recent war, most examples involve Iran confirming their deaths only after Israel or the US has claimed responsibility. However, this time Iran announced it earlier.

Khademi was appointed as the commander of the IRGC intelligence organisation four days after his predecessor, Mohammad Kaze mi, was killed in an Israeli attack on 15 June 2025.

Back in August last year, Khademi urged parliament to prioritise the completion of a domestic intranet, saying it was needed to “safeguard the sovereignty” of Iran's cyberspace.

Iran is currently still under an internet blackout since the war began on 28 February, although some domestic websites and apps remain accessible within the country.

Couple caught in 'indecent act' at cemetery

KUALA LUMPUR: A video showing a couple caught allegedly engaging in an indecent act while naked at a cemetery has gone viral on social media.

In the 38-second clip, a man is seen fully naked with his back to the camera, while a woman appears partially undressed, sitting on a tombstone.

A woman recording the footage is heard confronting the pair, claiming it was not the first time they had been spotted at the location.

"I found you two here again! They have been naked in the cemetery several times already.

"You are disrespecting the deceased by carrying out such an indecent act here. I am calling the police, she says.

The footage then shows the man calmly putting on his trousers as the woman filming continues to scold them, saying the cemetery is a place for people to pay respect to the deceased.

The man is later seen apologising, but the woman refuses to accept it and warns that she will hand the video over to the police.
