15 July 2025 – Stabbing Incident at Taylor’s University
A female international student from China was stabbed by her ex-boyfriend on the campus of Taylor’s University. She sustained injuries but survived the attack. The assailant was apprehended shortly after the incident.

Architecture student from Myanmar died after a fall from the 26th floor of a condominium in Taman Connaught.

25 July 2025 – Sudden Death at Xiamen University Malaysia
A 20-year-old male student from China was found unresponsive in his D5 dormitory at Xiamen University Malaysia. The cause of death was believed to be pulmonary thromboembolism due to deep vein thrombosis in the right leg. The student reportedly had difficulty breathing around 11:15 p.m. and was pronounced dead upon the ambulance's arrival at approximately 1:00 a.m.

Beware the Grab PayLater Scam

Here's my story.

I use Grab app for rides once in awhile and I have my debit card linked to it for payments. Lately, and without paying much attention, I was "guided" by the app to opt for PayLater service. I thought, why not, since it will also deduct from my debit card. And didn't pay much attention to it.

After a month, I got a notice that the system failed to deduct from my debit card and slapped me with a RM10 admin fee. I then decided to opt out immediately.

Then the problems started. It's almost impossible to get in touch with a "live" person at Grab. All enquiries go to a chatbot or something. I sent an email and enquiry via the system but no one replies.

Meanwhile, an automated voice message will call my phone to remind me. In other words, they will bug me to no end. But I can't seem to get through to anyone on their end to opt out of this service.

Anyone has any advice? Or should I file a complaint with Bank Negara?

Is PERKESO/SOCSO app down?

I tried to register for SOCSO/PERKESO using BOTH their website <https://matrix.perkeso.gov.my> and phone app (Prihatin). Both instances, the system did not send me a one-time OTP password to proceed. Does anyone else have the same issue?

Visit to Taman Botani Kepong

Just thought I should share this info here. Today, first day of 2024, we woke up early to visit Taman Tugu for a morning walk with the family. But all access roads to the park was closed due to some jogathon event.

Changed plans to go to FRIM in Kepong instead. But was informed by the guard that FRIM is now off-limits to the public ever since MCO days. Was advised to head towards Taman Botani Kepong instead, which is about 10 minutes' drive away.

Here is my review of Taman Botani Kepong (or Kepong Botanical Gardens):
1. Found out that Taman Botani is also part of the FRIM jungle. Entrance to the park is RM1 per adult. Free for kids.
2. But Botani is much smaller in scale and you can walk the entire park in less than 20 minutes. The park is mostly flat terrain and not much of a challenge compared to the old FRIM trails.
3. There is a lake at the centre of the park but the waters are brownish and murky (probably due to rain the day before).
4. Did not encounter many wild life except for a small monitor lizard.
5. The main attraction seems to be their canopy walk but we found their entrance fees too steep -- RM15 for adult and RM40 for non MyKad holders. We gave it a miss.
6. It is unlikely we will visit this park again unless they open up more of the jungle terrain for visitors.

Why Are MPVs These Days So Ugly?

Besides the Kia Carnival which costs an arm and a leg, are there any good looking MPVs on the market below RM150K?

Perodua Alza - the more I look at it, the more I feel it's outdated.
Proton X90 - OK in looks, but nothing exciting.
Mitsubishi Xpander - OK in looks but needs a revamp. The Cross version sold in Philippines and Indonesia are nowhere to be seen here.
Nissan Serena - downright ugly.
Toyota Innova Xenix - Ugly as hell.

Did I miss out any other MPVs? Unreliable cars like VW no need to consider.

Note: Above are just my personal views and opinions.

Shopee Pay Later not recommended

I tried Shopee Pay Later feature and won't recommend it

Here's why:
1. There is no reminder on the deadline via email, SMS etc
2. It took me awhile to figure out that I can only use the Shopee app on my phone to view the outstanding and pay it. It won't work on PC.
3. I was 2 days late and was penalised RM10

All in, I will not use the feature again unless I am desperately low on cash.

Shopee RM25 Flash Sale a Scam?

Just curious, did anyone actually managed to buy any of the items like Vivo smartphone, Skecher shoes etc for RM25 during the 25.11 Flash Sale?

I logged in at 12 am and 2am and the items immediately disappeared at that very second. Felt liked I wasted my time.

Recommend me a good 27" 4K Monitor

My Dell P2715Q bought in 2017 (5 yrs+) died. It was bought for RM2,299 then.
Now I am looking for another 27-in 4K monitor replacement.

Now considering the LG 27UP600 which sells for around RM1,088. Anyone has experience with this monitor.

I don't play games. I use 4K monitor for content creation (design, video editing etc) so color accuracy is more important for me.

Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

Problem with Dell 27" monitor

Recently, a quarter of my screen on the lower left side has a black shadowy patch appearing (see photo). At first, I thought it was the display cable and I changed it but it is still the same. It is also not the GPU as I tried with my laptop -- same issue. I guess my monitor needs repairing.

1) Should I bring it back to Dell (although it is out of warranty)?

2) Should I find an independent repair shop which is cheaper?

3) Or just invest in a new 4K monitor?
