Chinese-Made F-7 Jet Crashes on School in Bangladesh, 16 Killed

A Chinese-made F-7 jet crashed into a school in Bangladesh on Monday, killing at least 16 people and injuring dozens more.

The F-7 training aircraft belonged to the Bangladesh Air Force and went down at the Milestone School and College campus in the Uttara area of the capital, Dhaka, the office of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said in a statement Monday. The aircraft took off at 1:06pm local time, Yunus’s office said, without providing a reason for the crash.

The death toll stood at 16, mostly students, with more than 100 injured. At least 83 were being treated in hospitals in Dhaka, with many of the injured in critical condition, Yunus’s office said.

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 Julai - Malaysia dijangka muncul sebagai hab utama bagi tekstil halal dan berteknologi tinggi di rantau ini dalam tempoh lima tahun akan datang, berdasarkan kekuatan negara dalam pensijilan halal, kepakaran industri, dan inovasi fabrik.

Timbalan Dekan Penyelidikan dan Jaringan Industri, Fakulti Seni Lukis & Seni Reka, UiTM, Profesor Madya Dr. Rohana Zur berkata, meskipun Malaysia bukan pengeluar utama seperti Vietnam atau Kemboja, negara ini menonjol dalam pembangunan tekstil berteknologi tinggi termasuk fabrik pintar dan mesra alam.

"Malaysia mungkin bukan yang utama dari segi kuantiti, tetapi dari segi teknologi dan pensijilan, kita antara yang terkehadapan," ujarnya.

Beliau menjelaskan bahawa konsep halal dalam industri tekstil semakin diterima dan dicari oleh pengguna global yang mementingkan ketelitian, keselamatan, serta kualiti dalam proses penghasilan fabrik.

Tambah beliau, dengan peralihan industri global ke arah produk yang memenuhi standard tinggi, Malaysia berpotensi menarik pelabur asing yang bukan sekadar mencari kos pengeluaran rendah.

"Kalau mereka mahu pengeluaran besar-besaran, Vietnam menjadi pilihan.

"Tetapi jika mereka mencari fabrik halal dan berkualiti, Malaysia adalah destinasi yang sesuai," katanya.

Beliau optimis bahawa dengan hala tuju yang konsisten dan sokongan dasar yang kukuh, Malaysia bakal menjadi pusat rujukan serantau dalam bidang tekstil halal dan teknologi menjelang tahun 2030.

Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund will purchase Pokémon Go as part of a major mobile game company acquisition.

The Public Investment Fund (PIF), Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, is set to pay $3.5 billion (€3.2 billion) to buy the gaming division of Niantic. The San Francisco-based software development company is best known for its mobile games Pokémon Go and Monster Hunter Now.

Pokémon Go is one of the world’s most popular mobile games. Launched in 2016, the augmented reality game was developed in collaboration with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo. Its usership peaked at 232 million active monthly players in 2016 and is currently at around 30 million monthly players.

“I won't say that Pokémon Go will remain the same, because it has always been a work in progress,” said Ed Wu, who leads the Pokémon Go team. “But how we create and evolve it will remain unchanged, and I hope that we can make the experience even better.”

PIF is the one of the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world with assets estimated to be worth nearly $1 trillion. Established by King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud in 1971, the PIF is used by Saudi Arabia to finance companies in the country, as well as invest in foreign ventures.

Major recent investments by the PIF include Premier League football club Newcastle United as well as the creation of LIV Golf, intended to compete with the PGA Tour.

With the purchase of Niantic, the PIF continues its expansion into the esports industry.

PIF already owns Scopely through its Savvy Games Group company. After the $4.9 billion (€4.5 billion) acquisition in 2023, Scopely – which is known for Monopoly Go – will add Niantic to its portfolio.

“I firmly believe this partnership is great for our players and is the best way to ensure that our games have the long-term support and investment needed to be ‘forever games’ that will endure for future generations,” said Niantic CEO John Hanke.

Financially, PIF also has interests in multiple games companies, including Nintendo, Electronic Arts, and Take-Two Interactive.

Last summer, Riyadh played host to the 2024 Esports World Cup. It replaced Saudi Esports Federation's Gamers8 esports festival and included the largest prize pool in esports history at $60 million (€55.2 million).

Around the same time, Saudi Arabia was announced as the host of the inaugural Olympic Esports Games in 2027, run by the International Olympic Committee.

Alongside its successful bid to host the 2034 Men’s FIFA World Cup and the 2035 Women’s FIFA World Cup, Saudi Arabia has made its interest in international sports and esports clear. This tactic has been criticised as sportswashing.

Sportswashing is when companies, countries or individuals use sports as a propaganda tool to distract from negative narratives. In Saudi Arabia’s case, the PIF’s investments into sports companies and hosting international events has been accused as a means of diverting attention from accusations of human rights abuses.

A report by the Human Rights Watch accused Saudi Arabia of using these tournaments to avoid criticisms – which they deny. The criticisms range from human rights abuses to the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community and “mass killings of migrants along the Saudi border with Yemen.”

Dalam pada itu, Kor Ming menyarankan pihak berkuasa tempatan (PBT) mengekalkan 'status quo' atau dasar sedia ada berhubung jualan minuman keras di premis perniagaan dalam kawasan seliaan masing-masing.

"Syarikat (arak) pun syarikat tersenarai awam. Dia juga bayar cukai untuk kita bangunkan negara. Jadi kita harus adil kepada semua," katanya.

Tambah beliau, sekiranya terdapat permintaan komuniti setempat untuk menyekat jualan arak di sesuatu kawasan, PBT akan meneliti dan menilai permintaan terbabit.

Kor Ming berkata, Malaysia kini atas landasan betul dan semua pihak harus fokus memelihara keharmonian.

"Mengapa kita nak bazir masa. Jangan jadikan perkara ini sebagai isu, sebab itu saya sentiasa nasihat kita jangan hilang fokus dengan isu remeh yang tidak membina.

"Apabila kita terjerumus dalam pelbagai isu polemik, ia tidak membantu siapa pun, dia merugikan semua pihak," katanya.

(DEFENCE SECURITY ASIA) – Three Chinese coast guard vessels were detected within Malaysia’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) waters this morning, according to international maritime observer Ray Powell.

In a post on the platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Powell identified the three Chinese coast guard vessels within Malaysia’s EEZ in the South China Sea as CCG 5403, CCG 5102, and CCG 5402.

Powell did not specify whether Malaysian patrol vessels were nearby, though it is common for patrol ships from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) or the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to “shadow” the Chinese vessels.

Powell, a former U.S. Air Force colonel, leads the Myoushu Project at Stanford University’s Gordian Knot Center for National Security Innovation.

Vessel tracking data indicates that Chinese coast guard ships CCG 5403 and CCG 5102 are believed to be near the Kasawari gas development project, operated by Malaysia’s national oil and gas company, Petronas, in Block 316, which clearly falls within Malaysia’s EEZ.

Petronas Carigali, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas, is responsible for the development and operation of the Kasawari Gas Field, estimated to be worth billions of ringgit.

Discovered in November 2011, the Kasawari Gas Field in Block SK316 off the coast of Sarawak in the South China Sea is estimated to hold approximately three trillion cubic feet (TCF) of extractable natural gas, which can be processed and commercialized.

The discovery of the Kasawari Gas Field by Petronas further cements Malaysia’s position as one of the world’s largest exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The mega gas field is expected to produce up to 900 million cubic feet of gas and 3.5 million barrels of condensate daily.

Gas extracted from the Kasawari Gas Field will be transported via pipeline for processing at the Petronas LNG Complex in Bintulu, Sarawak.

A suicide bomber has detonated his explosive-laden vest near a van carrying Japanese autoworkers in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi, police said, injuring three bystanders.

The van was heading to an industrial area where the five Japanese nationals work at Pakistan Suzuki Motors, according to local police chief Arshad Awan.

The Japanese nationals escaped unhurt on Friday, Aswan said, adding that the three people wounded were in stable condition in hospital.

Two security guards were travelling in the bullet-proof van after receiving reports about possible attacks on foreigners working in Pakistan on various Chinese-funded and other projects.

Police said a suicide bomber on a motorcycle set off his vest, while another assailant was shot dead by police patrolling the area.

Tariq Mastoi, a senior police officer, said the quick police response foiled the attack.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the assault in Karachi, the country’s largest city and the capital of the southern province of Sindh.

Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the attack on the Japanese workers.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa says three individuals believed to have participated in October 7 attacks.

The sanctioned individuals, who were not named, are believed to have been involved in Hamas’s October 7 attacks on Israel and be in a position to use funds to carry out similar attacks in future, Yoshimasa said.

The move comes after Tokyo in October imposed sanctions on nine people and a company over their alleged links to Hamas.

Tokyo has attempted to walk a fine line on the war in Gaza war, striving to balance relations with the United States, its closest ally, and its ties to energy-supplying partners in the Middle East.

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio condemned the October 7 attacks on Israel and called for the immediate release of Hamas’s captives while expressing concern about civilian deaths and the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Japan earlier this month supported a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza, after abstaining from a similar vote in October.

Last week, Japanese container shipper Ocean Network Express announced it would reroute vessels away from the Red Sea to avoid being targeted by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who have ramped up attacks on commercial shipping since the start of the war in Gaza.

In November, the Houthis seized a British-owned vessel chartered by Tokyo-based Nippon Yusen, prompting the shipping line to stop accepting cargo bound for Israel.

SEOUL, Oct. 11 (Yonhap) -- Nearly 40,000 South Koreans took their own lives over the past three years, with the suicide rate increasing among the younger generation, data showed Wednesday.

A total of 39,453 people killed themselves from 2020 to 2022, according to data from the health ministry and the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency submitted to Rep. Baek Jong-hean of the ruling People Power Party.

The tally was greater than the 32,156 COVID-19 deaths recorded over the same period.

The suicide rate has slightly decreased over the past five years to 25.2 people per population of 100,000 in 2022, but the suicide rate of teenagers and those in their 20s has been showing an upward trend.

The teenage suicide rate rose from 5.8 per 100,000 individuals in 2018 to 7.2 in 2022, while the rate for those in their 20s rose from 17.6 to 21.4 over the same period.

The number of suicide attempts also increased.

Last year, 36,754 people visited an emergency room after hurting themselves or trying to take their own lives, up 68 percent from 21,875 in 2012.

"The government should declare suicide as a national disaster and put in all-out efforts to fight it," Baek said.

NEW DELHI (Reuters): India's financial crime agency on Tuesday (Oct 10) arrested four executives of Chinese smartphone maker Vivo, including one Chinese national, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

The arrests add to the legal troubles of the Chinese phone maker in India, and come amid rising tensions between Beijing and New Delhi over issues ranging from border disputes to India's increasing scrutiny of Chinese businesses and investment.

Vivo and the country's Enforcement Directorate (ED) did not immediately respond to requests for comment made by email and telephone.

The executives were arrested in relation to an ongoing 2022 case where the ED raided the company's offices and accused it of money laundering, the first of the sources said.

The company has repeatedly denied the allegations. It has previously said it cooperated with authorities to provide them with all required information and was "committed to be fully compliant with laws."

Vivo is owned by China's BBK Electronics, which also operates brands such as Oppo and Realme in India. Vivo is the second biggest smartphone brand in India with a 17% market share in shipments, trailing behind Samsung, according to data from research firm Counterpoint.

The first source said Vivo executives were summoned to the ED's Delhi office for questioning, and then arrested. They will appear in court later on Tuesday, the person added.
