The second generation solid-state battery cell of one of the world's top 10 battery makers - Gotion - has managed to achieve a 50% capacity boost over the first generation's 350 Wh\kg.

After a year of validation, Gotion managed to tweak its Gemstone battery formula for a 60% improvement in solid sulfide electrolyte ion conductivity that brought on an energy density increase to over 500 Wh/kg.

For comparison, Tesla's 4680 battery cells with liquid electrolyte that power the Cybertruck pack half the energy density, while the LFP batteries that are in mass market electric cars or popular power stations like the Anker Solix C1000 come with even lower capacity numbers.

The solid-state battery has now entered pilot production, says Gotion, starting it slow with 200 MWh factory capacity that returns 90% yield, and the packs are currently undergoing road testing in electric vehicles.

The second generation Gemstone solid-state battery also achieved a 90% reduction in stacking pressure pre-tension force, allowing Gotion to pass all safety procedures like nail penetration, crash tests, or thermal runaway experiments with flying colors.

Given the increasing number of top tier manufacturers like CATL that have initiated solid-state battery testing and even pilot manufacturing, the self-imposed 2027 deadline for mass solid-state battery deployment in electric vehicles looks increasingly within reach.

This is when Toyota, Samsung, BYD and CATL said they will start mass solid-state battery production, although Toyota warned that the safer, high-capacity cell technology will first be installed in premium electric vehicles in the Lexus brand due to its higher costs.

Gotion is partially owned by Volkswagen, so the pilot Gemstone cells might have been installed in its vehicles for road trials. Chinese automaker Zeekr has previewed its 7X today at the Malaysia Auto Show 2025. The SUV comes in three variants for the local market: RWD Standard, RWD Long Range, and AWD Performance.

The official price of the Zeekr 7X has yet to be revealed by the company. However, there is an indicative price for the first 500 customers in which the RWD Standard is priced at RM182,000 while the RWD Long Range costs RM195,000. As for the AWD Performance variant, it is priced at RM230,000.

To recap our last report, the Zeekr 7X SUV stands out with a flowing Stargate LCD display across the dashboard, through-type tail lights, a clamshell hood, frameless automatic doors, and a floating roof design. Inside, it offers a spacious cabin with 32 storage compartments, a 13-inch digital driver’s display, a 16-inch infotainment screen, Nappa leather seats, ripple ambient lighting, a reclining rear sofa, and a large 616-litre boot.

Power comes from either a 75 kWh LFP or a 100 kWh NMC battery, offering CLTC ranges of up to 780 km and 705 km respectively. Rear-wheel drive versions produce 421 PS and 440 Nm, while AWD variants with the larger battery deliver 646 PS and 710 Nm. The 7X supports ultra-fast DC charging—10–80% in 10.5 minutes (LFP) or 15 minutes (NMC)—and features bidirectional charging at up to 60 kW DC or 3.3 kW AC.

Alongside the 7X, the automaker also introduced a new Executive variant of its Zeekr 009 MPV, with an indicative price of RM310,000 for the first 500 customers. It comes as a front-wheel drive, featuring a single motor that delivers 335HP and 373 Nm of torque.

The MPV goes from 0 to 100km/h in 7.9 seconds and has a WLTP range of 604km from the 116kWh battery. This new variant adds to the existing offerings of the exclusive 6-seater Ultra Luxury and 7-seater Luxury models, providing customers with additional choice tailored for both executive and family needs.

Both the Zeekr 7X and the Zeekr 009 are currently open for booking at MAS 2025 as well as authorised Zeekr showrooms nationwide.
