KUALA LUMPUR: The human resource and home ministries have agreed to allow foreign workers from 15 source countries to work in Malaysia’s manufacturing, construction and services industries.

Construction Labour Exchange Centre Bhd will manage the entry of foreign workers for the construction sector.

The decision was reached following a meeting between the two ministries to discuss the recruitment of foreign workers and the recent freeze on worker recruitment announced by the Indonesian government.

They also approved Construction Labour Exchange Centre Bhd’s (CLAB) proposal for the agency to fully manage the entry of foreign workers for the construction sector.

Home minister Hamzah Zainudin said certain ministries were appointed to manage the recruitment process of foreign workers in these industries namely, the transport ministry for the recruitment of low-skilled workers in the land warehouse subsector, and the ministry of agriculture and food industries for the bird’s nest industry.

“This is to ensure that this decision will not affect job opportunities for locals and to reduce dependency on foreign workers,” he said in a press conference at the Bukit Aman federal police headquarters here.

“To meet the needs of the industry, the meeting today also agreed to allow foreign workers to be employed in the scrap metal and laundry subsectors.”

Asked about the temporary freeze on the recruitment of Indonesian workers, Hamzah said both ministries would hold a meeting with the Indonesian government soon.

Penjara 30 bulan, denda RM40,000 sebabkan kematian di jalan raya

BAHAU: Mahkamah Majistret di sini, hari ini menjatuhkan hukuman penjara 30 bulan dan denda RM40,000 terhadap pemandu treler yang menyebabkan kematian lapan orang dalam kemalangan di Jempol dua tahun lalu.

Keputusan itu dibuat oleh Masjistret Mohamad Redza Azhar terhadap Norzailan Omar, 46, selepas tertuduh mengaku bersalah.

Mengikut pertuduhan, dia didakwa memandu secara berbahaya tanpa mengambil perhatian terhadap segala hal termasuk jenis, keadaan dan saiz jalan serta kesesakan lalu lintas yang boleh dijangka atau mungkin ada di atas jalan itu sehingga menyebabkan kematian lapan orang pemandu dan penumpang yang menaiki dua kenderaan lain.

Berikutan itu, dia dituduh melakukan kesalahan mengikut Seksyen 41(1) Akta Pengangkutan Jalan 1987 memperuntukkan hukuman penjara minimum dua tahun dan maksimum 10 tahun serta denda tidak kurang RM5,000 dan tidak lebih RM20,000.

Selain itu, lesennya boleh digantung dan hilang kelayakan daripada memegang atau mendapatkan lesen memandu selama tiga tahun dari tarikh sabitan, jika sabit kesalahan.

Pendakwaan dilakukan oleh Timbalan Pendakwa Raya, Muhammad Amirul Noor Hashimi, manakala tertuduh diwakili peguam D Anuratha dan Kevin Lai.

Terdahulu peguam memohon supaya tertuduh yang berdepan lapan pertuduhan, dijatuhi hukuman ringan kerana tiada rekod jenayah selain menjadi ketua keluarga kerana isteri seorang suri rumah manakala dua anak masih bersekolah.

Mahkamah kemudian menjatuhkan hukuman penjara 30 bulan bagi setiap pertuduhan yang diperintahkan berjalan serentak.

Selain itu tertuduh juga didenda sebanyak RM5,000 bagi setiap pertuduhan dan jika gagal bayar boleh dipenjara enam bulan.

Lesen memandu tertuduh turut digantung selama tiga tahun dan tertuduh akan menjalani hukuman di Penjara Bentong, Pahang.

Malaysia and Singapore had agreed to open the land border of the two countries for travellers who are fully vaccinated in line with Malaysia entering the transition to endemicity phase.

A joint statement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and his counterpart in Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong said the reopening of the border allowed all fully vaccinated travellers to cross the common land border without having to undergo quarantine or perform Covid-19 testing.
