I was shocked to find out a Methodist Church in Selangor is paying her employee a measly of rm1200+ for monthly salary.
The employee is my friend.
God be my witness, I have seen her salary slip. Deducting epf socso, she gets a little short of rm1100.

I was shocked, and disgusted.
Please tell me, am I overreacting?
Is this the real world and I was all the time living in my bubble?

Does minimum wage apply to Non-Profit Organization, such as church?
As far as i know, minimum wage order came effect last year. But for employers that hire less than 5 employee, they can implement it this year. It was January 1 then there's another extension to later this year.
Does church have to follow this order?

>about the church
no financial problem from what i heard.
employs less than 5 employees (we counted).

>about my friend
pious christian.
She does not see how the church "abused" her as a big issue
She works as full time office worker for the church. Clock in 9-6 everyday like normal worker.

>about my busybody
I can't stand with this injustice.
I will do what I have to do.

BAC or ATC for UOL program

Niece is studying law.
She asked for my advices.

Did some researchs over the net and on lowyat.
Almost confirm pinpointed to UOL program. Mostly due to budget, close proximity campus, etc and, why not?

Now the next question is BAC or ATC.
I am sorry to ask this question cause I know it is hard to answer but I really have not much idea about law education.

Also, wanna take a step back and think: is this the right path? Is there other choices in persuing law education?

[Update] Is there any way to help this poor

[Update]
Finally decided to evict them.

Kak C came up with this fake claim she had rm1500 deposit with us.
I know this is fake because the number did not add up.
When my father passed away we only rent them rm650. Rm1500 is not right. My father rented the house to them for more than a decade. Rm1500 is a made up number.

And after all the troubles they had caused, after I tried to seek help for them, now they want to do one last cheat?

I am so sick of this. Lost hope to the humanity. 🙁

TL;DR
Trying to find out ways to help this underprivileged family in KL. Although they are not Malaysian citizen, I am sure they can contribute net positive to the society with some guidance.

Long Story
Okay this will be long, please bear with me.

Family M
Collectively let's call them Family M.
Husband Uncle M is Bangladeshi. He is in 50s and has been living in KL for a few decades. He went back to Bangladesh during covid and now having problem re-entering Malaysia. This significantly impact the financial and living of the family.
Wife Kakak C is Indonesian. Working as cleaner. Has health problem - diabetes. At one point lost her job due to unfit to work. Now back to working but take break frequently due to leg pain.
Anak 1 raised and born in Malaysia. 21 years old. He has Malaysian PR (Red IC). Do not have permanent job. Doing part time here and there to earn some pocket money. It seems like he is having issue with money management as well, I was told of. So far I do not have enough information to determine why does this strong and healthy men fail to have stable permanent job.
Anak 2 raised and born in Malaysia, 17 years old. Do not have PR, only surat beranak - don’t ask me why. Working odd job for pocket money – I was told that his boss hires him and other youth to sell packages of kuih muih at some housing areas.

Why and How I was involved
TL;DR
They rent with me
Long story

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Uncle M rent with my dad for more than a decade. My father passed away in 2017 and my brother was assigned to manage our properties. My brother was very frustrated dealing with Family M. Family M are always problematic, particularly after Uncle M went back to Bangladesh, all hell break loose. Recently he passed the management to me, since the ownership of this house has been transferred to me.

Family M's need
1. Living assistance – Anak 1 need to work. He need referral. I don’t know why he does not have permanent job. I told him his father is not around, his mother sick, brother young, he need to man up to lead the family and help his mom in terms of financial. He said yes yes yes but I don’t know how much went into his head. He need guidance. Someone need to talk sense to this man.
2. Anak 2 need legal assistance. I dont know about citizenship/PR stuff but if there's a way he need to get a PR.
3. I consider Kakak C's condition has made her not optimum to work. She might need some advice on her medical condition. I understand that diabetes is a lifelong illness and it can be managed with proper knowledge.
4. I consider Family M have poor money management knowledge and make poor financial decisions. When they have enough income, they struggle to pay rent. There is no use giving them financial aids or handouts. They will just spend them spontaneously and ask more when it is finished.
5. Financial aids – before you consider this, please also consider Anak 1 can work but he is not for now. Also consider point 4 that before you give them fish, please teach them how to cook the fish properly. The financial burdens that I see for now is maybe Kakak C's expenses for medical service and probably Anak 2's expenses for legal assistance

Their problems are out of our capacity
As a house owner, we forgave their rent several times. We reduced their rent. Currently they are renting at a discounted rate comparing to the rent in this housing area.
We have our own financial need. We are never rich. This thing cannot go on indefinitely.
I have my own commitment. I have a 9-6 job. I cannot do much. I talked to Kakak C, Anak 1, their Neighbour W. This thing is progressing very slow.
As a house owner, I can close one eye and evict them. I think I am very kejam. I can do this. Push the problem out of my sight.
But I kesian them. That is why I am asking for help in the forum.

It is possible that they might be abusing our sympathy
I have a little suspicion that they might be exploiting our sympathy. There is too much to write. I will only say that some of the stories they told me did not add up.
It is possible that the information they told us are only half true. It is possible that they even lied. On the other hand it is also possible that they are not yet fully open up and unwilling to share their true thoughts.
I have did my best to identify and describe their problems as objective as possible. Regardless of what they did and what potentially they are thinking ill of, I believe objectively they are indeed in need of assistance.

QUOTE(Liffy @ Oct 1 2022, 11:18 AM)

Thanks for all the replies. I like to add on a few points.

Things went from bad to worst after Uncle M went back Bangladesh.
Uncle M was a bad payer, but he paid. His family though, it was as if they do not want to honour the obligation of law of contract to pay as a tenant (this is my opinion). Especially at one point Kakak C claimed that she lost her job due to her illness, and Anak 1 was not working, they ended up did not pay rent at all for a few months.

Uncle M is having issue re-entering Malaysia due to closed border during COVID. But I heard from Anak 1 he is actively cari jalan to come back as the border is open already and the timeline could be soon (when ar?). It's all about money I believe.

Eviction is definitely on the table. Actually during my brother handling the house, when we heard from him about Family M's issue, my thought were we should just kick them out. After I took over, I felt hesitant.

I just took over handling the house for less than a month. There's a lot information gap. I talked to their Neighbour W, I interviewed Anak 1. I have my own work and commitments. I am particularly busy lately and will have more time after November. For now I will see how Anak 1 react and any news from Uncle M. After that I might consider eviction. This thing cannot go on indefinitely .

Still, aren't there any NGO, social workers or religious body willing to help? I will be grateful if anyone can share some contacts. They are more experienced in handling such situation.
