This won’t happen with the Phone (1), it’s just not built with support for bands used by US carriers (you can get one for $300, but it’s intended as a beta test). It will be the Nothing Phone (2), coming in late 2023, that targets the US market specifically.

The new model will be more premium than the original – Pei is reluctant to call it a “flagship” as the company aims for a refined software experience and innovative hardware design rather than getting the best hardware at any cost.

Why wasn’t the Phone (1) designed with the US market in mind? Nothing just didn’t have the resources. US carriers demand that phones go through a certification process and mandate that certain features must be included in the software

Pei says that in the beginning there were only 5 engineers on the mobile team, so work on Nothing OS had to be outsourced. But now the team has been expanded and now there are 100 people working on the software. Nothing’s Android 13 beta is completely made in house.

The company has grown since its start just a couple of years ago. It had 200 employees in 2021 and has grown to 400 today. Its revenue has grown significantly too, from $24 million in its first year to $200 million in 2022. Now the company has the resources to take on a new market.

And Pei sees an opening – he cites research that suggests that US consumers are starting to get bored with the Apple/Samsung duopoly. They mostly have Motorola and OnePlus as alternatives, soon Nothing will join the fray.

Part of the growth plan includes opening more brick and mortar stores. Its first store, the one in Soho in London, has been doing okay (foot traffic is helped by being located next door to a Supreme store), but the CEO says that more products are needed to push the store into profitability.

This will give the vanilla phones better zooming capabilities, though they still won’t be a match for the Pros as telephoto lenses will remain exclusive to the pricier models (as will the LiDAR).

iPhone 15 Pro Max to have a 6x periscope lens in addition to the 3x tele lens. Also, the new Pros upgrade to 3nm Apple A17 chipsets (and jump from 6GB to 8GB RAM), while the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will just move up to the current A16 chips.

All four models are expected to have USB-C ports to comply with the impending change in EU regulations. However, there will still be a difference between them – only the Pros will have USB 3.2 speeds (so the vanilla models will be limited to USB 2.0, just like all iPhones right now).

Other differences are titanium cases for the Pro models (instead of stainless steel), which also come with a switch to virtual volume and power buttons (similar to the home button on the iPhone SE).

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to be FAB by Samsung

Qualcomm is expected to source the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 manufacturing to TSMC and Samsung - partnerships that have years of history. However, the Taiwanese manufacturer might get the majority of chip orders built on the 3 nm process because of the incredibly high 80% yield rate.

The current yield rate from a 3nm GAA wafer is about 60-70%, but TSMC is managing to implement between 75-80% of a single wafer. Apple and Qualcomm will not have shipment issues for their next-gen chipsets, the A17 Bionic and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Originally, Samsung experienced a horrendous yield rate of about 20% before partnering with US company Silicon Frontline Technology.

The issue for Qualcomm and other chip makers is that price is paid per wafer, and yielding a lower amount of chips means a higher price for a chipset for the end customer - the smartphone manufacturer, which would mean a higher market price - a price increase which would benefit no one in the long run.
