NEW DELHI — Several players with Indian heritage are representing their respective nations at the FIFA World Cup 2026, including New Zealand’s Sarpreet Singh, Australia’s Nishan Velupillay, Qatar’s Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid, and DR Congo’s Samuel Moutoussamy.

Among them, Singh achieved a notable milestone when he became the first player of Indian heritage to start a FIFA World Cup match. The New Zealand midfielder was named in the starting lineup for his team’s Group G game against Iran on June 16.

Born in Auckland to Punjabi parents, the 27-year-old played until the closing stages of New Zealand’s 2-2 draw against Iran. Wearing the No. 10 jersey, Singh was involved in New Zealand’s attacking play and had several attempts on goal.

“Sejak sekian lama, kita perlu mengakui wujud rasa curiga dalam kalangan masyarakat Cina terhadap pelaksanaan dasar kerajaan terdahulu, khususnya dalam bidang pendidikan yang dianggap tidak adil kepada golongan minoriti.

“Justeru, Perdana Menteri cuba menangani situasi ini kerana jika tiada langkah diambil, akan ada pihak yang merasakan diri mereka tertindas, manakala pihak lain pula melihat sentimen tersebut sebagai keengganan menerima dasar negara.

Pada masa sama, beliau berkata, Anwar tidak pernah menggunakan sentimen perkauman untuk meraih sokongan politik, sebaliknya konsisten membawa pendekatan sederhana dan inklusif.

“Beliau tidak memburuk-burukkan masyarakat Cina di hadapan orang Melayu, sebagaimana beliau juga tidak memburuk-burukkan orang Melayu di hadapan masyarakat Cina atau India.

Iranian refugees accuse UNHCR of discrimination, neglect

AMPANG JAYA: A group of Iranian refugees has accused the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) of discrimination, alleging that their cases have been overlooked for over a decade while other nationalities are prioritised for resettlement.
Community leader Mohammed Aboutalebi, 63, told FMT that despite being a small community of fewer than 500 refugees and asylum seekers, Iranians receive the least attention and support.

He claimed that three members of his community died last year after waiting up to 15 years for resettlement, adding that other nationalities were resettled ahead of Iranians, even when those groups arrived later.

Arezoo Sabaghzadeh, 46, fled Iran in May 2010 and has been living in Malaysia as a refugee for about 16 years with her family.

She claimed that when she approached UNHCR that year, she was told there was “no problem” in Iran and was advised to return. She said her husband then returned to Iran briefly for documents, but was arrested, tortured and hospitalised before being bailed out with their family’s house deed, which was later confiscated by the Iranian government.

“When I first came here, my eldest son was only four. He’s in his twenties now, depressed and angry because we don’t have anything – no school, no job, no future. He stays in his room all day, afraid of the police,” she told FMT.

Arezoo’s husband, Hamid Rastgordani, 54, has been on hunger strike outside the UNHCR building since May 4, demanding action on his resettlement case. Despite weeks of fasting and repeated emails, he has received no response.

Single mother Samaneh Bashi, 42, registered with UNHCR in 2022 after fleeing Iran due to family persecution and political threats tied to her ex‑husband’s family. She said her former father-in-law, a police officer, had threatened to take her daughter if she returned to Iran.

Samaneh came to Malaysia with her husband and daughter but later divorced him after enduring abuse. She said UNHCR rejected her refugee status determination case in May 2024, telling her she could “go back to Iran” if she felt unsafe here.

Samaneh has appealed repeatedly to no avail. She now works as a cleaner at a school where her daughter studies in exchange for her work, but she says being a single parent with no stability has harmed her daughter’s mental health and their financial security.

Too ‘white’ to be refugees

According to Pooria Shirbani, 39, his community feels UNHCR does not consider them “real” refugees because of their Western appearance and English fluency.

We are too ‘white’ to be seen as refugees. We are not religious and we don’t have long beards or wear dishdasha (traditional Middle Eastern robe). This is not only in Malaysia. It is the same everywhere in the world.

“We are not considered good cases for being refugees. Even when we protest, we wear our best clothes. In contrast, other nationalities wear the dirtiest clothes, presenting themselves as beggars. They go in front of UNHCR to gain sympathy, and the doors open for them,” Pooria told FMT.

INGLEWOOD: Hundreds of anti-regime protesters gathered outside the stadium in Los Angeles where Iran will take on New Zealand in their opening game of the 2026 World Cup on Monday.
Waving the flag used by Iran before the 1979 Islamic revolution, demonstrators beat drums and chanted slogans denouncing the national side, which they insist is a propaganda tool for Tehran.

“This team is not the Iranian people’s team, it’s the regime’s team,” said Ava Amin, a philosophy student who came to demonstrate with a banner calling for “regime change.”

When the people get murdered, they ignore it and stay silent,” she told AFP.

The match is taking place under tight security, with a large contingent from the Iranian-American community in Los Angeles vowing to make known their opposition to the regime.

The city – sometime dubbed “Tehrangeles” – is home to the largest ethnic Iranian community outside of Iran, with a sizeable number made up of those who fled around the time of the revolution, or their descendants.

Some of those people say they want to use the visibility of the World Cup to highlight the abuses committed by the military-backed clerics who have held power in Iran for 47 years.

KUALA LUMPUR: Australian Nishan Velupillay became the first player of Malaysian descent to play in the FIFA World Cup on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Melbourne-born winger came on as a 61st-minute substitute for goal scorer Nestory Irankunda during Australia's 2-0 Group D victory over Turkiye at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.

Nishan, whose father Sasinath Velupillay is a Malaysian of Sri Lankan Tamil heritage and mother Gillian Velupillay is Anglo-Indian, has come up through the ranks at Melbourne Victory.

He was the club's top scorer during the 2024-2025 season.

His international debut came during a World Cup qualifier against China in October 2024.

Introduced from the bench late in the match, Nishan marked his senior debut for the Socceroos with a goal just seven minutes after coming on to help Australia secure a 3-1 victory.

Since then, he has continued to justify coach Tony Popovic's faith, scoring three goals in his first seven international appearances, with all of them coming during Australia's successful World Cup qualifying campaign.

It was learnt that the FA of Malaysia had approached Nishan a few years ago, but the forward decided to play for Australia.

Rohingya man charged with robbery at Razif Sidek’s house

KUALA LUMPUR: A Rohingya national faces up to 14 years in jail after he was charged with armed robbery at the home of former national badminton player Razif Sidek last month.
Fawyas Yasin, 27, claimed trial when the charge was read to him before sessions court judge Siti Shakirah Mohtarudin today.

Fawyas, a contractor, is alleged to have committed the offence while armed with a knife at the home of Razif, 64, at Jalan Damansara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, at about 12.20pm on May 19.

The charge was framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 397, which provides for a maximum jail term of 14 years, as well as whipping and a fine, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor J Banusha objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the offence and noting that Fawyas’s United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) card had expired.

She also argued that there was a risk the accused could interfere with witnesses.

Counsel Mansheel Kaur applied for bail, saying that Fawyas is supporting his unemployed wife and a 10-month-old child on a daily wage of RM50.

She said her client, who has been living in Malaysia for 15 years, is in the process of renewing his UNHCR card.

The court denied bail and fixed July 14 for mention.

Razif achieved major success in the men’s doubles with his younger brother, Jalani, forming one of the country’s most successful partnerships in the 1980s and early 1990s.

His career highlights include winning the men’s doubles bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics – the first ever Olympic medal won by Malaysia in any sport.

The pair also won multiple international titles, including the All England Championships, helping establish Malaysia as a dominant force in doubles badminton during their era.

Rohingya man charged over Taman Belibis murder

NIBONG TEBAL: A Rohingya man was charged in the Jawi Magistrate's Court today with murdering a man and injuring his wife during a stabbing incident in Taman Belibis, Jawi, last month.

Osman Bawdi Alom, 38, nodded to indicate he understood the charges which were read to him before Magistrate Nurul Ainna Ahmad.

No plea was recorded for the murder charge as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Osman is alleged to have murdered Abdul Rahman Shah Mia, 31, at a house in Taman Belibis between 2.50pm and 2.54pm on May 31.

He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years and not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

193,284 pelarian Rohingya setakat Februari, tertinggi berbanding etnik negara lain di Malaysia – UNHCR

KUALA LUMPUR: Sejumlah 215,600 pelarian dan pencari suaka berdaftar dengan Suruhanjaya Tinggi Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu bagi Pelarian (UNHCR) di Malaysia sehingga Februari lalu.

Data menerusi laman web UNHCR menunjukkan pelarian tertinggi yang berada di negara ini adalah dalam kalangan warga Myanmar dengan etnik Rohingya mewakili 193,824 orang, etnik Chin, 15,774 dan 33,002 dalam kalangan individu daripada kumpulan etnik lain.

Kesemua mereka adalah pelarian yang melarikan diri susulan konflik dan penganiayaan di negara asal mereka.

Dalam laman web sama, turut direkodkan, selain Myanmar, seramai 21,776 pelarian dan pencari suaka yang berada di negara ini datang dari lebih 50 negara yang dilanda perang dan penganiayaan.

Ini termasuk 5,760 warga Pakistan, 3,193 membabitkan warga Yaman, 2,945 (warga Somalia), 2,931 (Afghanistan), 2,471 (Syria), 1,043 (Sri Lanka), 514 (Palestin), 420 (Iraq).

Daripada jumlah keseluruhan pelarian dan pencari suaka di negara ini, sebanyak 46 peratus daripadanya adalah lelaki, manakala 24 peratus lagi, wanita.

Data UNHCR Malaysia turut menunjukkan kira-kira 64,680 kanak-kanak berusia bawah 18 tahun dalam kalangan pelarian dan pencari suaka yang berdaftar.

UNHCR Malaysia turut memaklumkan, Malaysia mengamalkan dasar yang bertujuan memperkukuh tindak balas negara terhadap perpindahan terpaksa, termasuk melalui pelaksanaan sistem pendaftaran pelarian yang dikendalikan oleh kerajaan, iaitu Dokuman Pendaftaran Pelarian (DPP), yang dilancarkan pada Januari lalu.

Katanya, usaha itu mencerminkan satu langkah penting ke arah pendekatan yang berstruktur, boleh diramal dan dimiliki secara nasional untuk melindungi individu yang terpaksa melarikan diri dari negara mereka.

SINGAPORE: Three social media platforms have been ordered to block access to 14 posts which “target the Indian community and undermine Singapore’s model of multiculturalism”, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Saturday (Jun 6).

The police have issued disabling directions under the Online Criminal Harms Act (OCHA) to block access to the posts on YouTube, Facebook and X, MHA said in a statement.

The direction requires the platforms to “take all reasonable steps to disable access by Singapore users to these posts”, it added.

Second Minister for Home Affairs Edwin Tong told reporters at Siglap South Community Centre on Saturday that "from what we know so far, the content originated from overseas".

Investigations into the problematic content in these posts had revealed that it likely originated from a China-based platform, and was subsequently shared by other platforms and websites.

"This is unacceptable," he added, reiterating MHA's statement, which said Singapore firmly opposes "nativism and xenophobia".

"Any attempt to pit one community against another here must be firmly rejected,” said MHA. "These attacks coming from a foreign source are doubly unacceptable."

NARRATIVES CIRCULATED IN CHINESE ONLINE SPACES
Mr Tong said that there is currently no evidence to suggest that this is a coordinated campaign by any government. Investigations have shown that the content was likely generated organically by various foreign netizens, he added.

PETALING JAYA: DAP’s already fragile standing among the Malay electorate has suffered yet another blow following the debacle involving outgoing Skudai assemblyman Marina Ibrahim, political analysts said.
The Asia Group associate vice-president Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani and James Chin of the University of Tasmania said the issue only reinforced the perception that DAP’s Malay leaders and elected representatives—even popular figures like Marina—merely make up the supporting cast in the Chinese-dominated party.

This reinforces an existing and deeper challenge for DAP: convincing Malay voters and Malay political talent that they can rise within the party on their own merits, rather than being seen primarily through the lens of symbolism or electoral utility.

That perception problem long predates this episode, but moments like this make it harder to argue against,” Asrul told FMT, adding that DAP’s rivals are bound to “go to town” on the issue.

Asrul said this could affect DAP, and by extension Pakatan Harapan, in seats where Malay swing votes matter.

Chin said the DAP has already been painted by rivals as being anti-Malay and anti-Islam. The perception of trying to push Marina out of Skudai would not help the party’s cause, he added.

PETALING JAYA: Polis mengesahkan menerima laporan berhubung kejadian seorang pelanggan wanita dipercayai menjadi mangsa intipan di sebuah restoran di Damansara Uptown, di sini, malam tadi, dan kini sedang giat mengesan suspek terlibat.

Ketua Polis Daerah Petaling Jaya Asisten Komisioner Shamsudin Mamat, berkata pihaknya menerima laporan yang dibuat oleh mangsa berhubung kejadian berkenaan.

“Tindakan mengesan suspek sedang dijalankan dan kes disiasat mengikut Seksyen 509 Kanun Keseksaan dan Seksyen 14 Akta Kesalahan Kecil,” katanya.

Wanita berkenaan yang mahu dikenali sebagai Iysa, 23, berkata kejadian berlaku sekitar jam 9.50 malam ketika dia sedang makan di restoran terkenal di Damansara Uptown sebelum ke tandas untuk membuang air kecil.

Menurutnya, ketika di dalam tandas dia terdengar orang bersiul dan mencari bunyi itu kerana terlalu kuat.

Namun, saya masih berfikiran positif dan beranggapan mungkin salah dengar. Tetapi tidak lama kemudian saya masih dengar orang bersiul dan terus pandang ke arah kipas penghawa dingin. Saya nampak ada telefon di situ. Saya kemudian menyuluhnya menggunakan lampu telefon saya sebelum menyedari ada orang sedang merakam,” katanya ketika dihubungi Harian Metro, hari ini.

Katanya, individu terbabit kemudian bertindak menarik telefon yang sedang merakam itu sebelum dia segera keluar dari tandas dan memaklumkan kejadian tersebut kepada penyelia restoran.

“Saya juga sudah membuat laporan polis dan rakaman kamera tertutup (CCTV) mendapati individu terbabit adalah salah seorang pekerja mereka.

Saya juga kecewa apabila pihak restoran itu seperti tidak mahu bertanggungjawab apabila difahamkan lebih 20 video sudah diambil,” katanya.

In the June 1 episode of Hong Kong talk show The Wonder Women, actresses Christine Ng and Rachel Kan talked about some predators they encountered in the industry.

Guest Rachel, who entered showbiz in 2001, shared that she went overseas to film a four-day-three-night travel programme as a rookie actress. During a break while they were out on a boat for filming, a man sitting next to her slipped his hand into her pants.

The 49-year-old recalled feeling helpless then and didn't dare to confront the man, simply retreating to the bathroom to hide. She didn't reveal in the talk show who the man is or whether he worked in front or behind the camera, as "it would be easy to find out his identity".

Later that night when she returned to her room, the man and another insisted on "escorting" her back. She recalled: "He tried to kiss me when we were at the door! I immediately pushed him away and shut the door.

"I didn't receive anymore travel programmes from then on."

Host Christine, 57, then came forward to share her own encounter. She had dinner and drinks with her co-stars one day and an actor pretended to be drunk, got into her taxi and tried to kiss her. She recalled rushing back to her room once the taxi reached her destination.

They bumped into each other for a few days at work where he tried to talk to her as if nothing had happened. Christine said: "He's a real scumbag!"

PETALING JAYA: A Chinese national who was arrested alongside 50 others over an allegedly drug-fuelled gay party at a Kuala Lumpur hotel last month is believed to be the organiser of the event, according to police.
Bukit Aman narcotics crime investigation department director Hussein Omar Khan said investigations found that the man promoted the party on Instagram using his private account, Berita Harian reported.

Hussein said investigations found that the seized drugs were for the use of participants and that there was no evidence of drug distribution, for now.

Hussein said police are still waiting for the autopsy report on the man’s death.

Sabah cops cripple scam syndicate with arrest of 57, mainly China nationals

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police are believed to have crippled an online scam syndicate with the arrest of 57 suspects comprising mainly China nationals from a hotel in Labuan on Monday (June 1).

The operation conducted by the Sabah Commercial Crime Investigation Department, also saw equipment used in the alleged scam worth around RM131,500 seized.

According to police sources, the 8.40am raid saw 48 Chinese nationals, eight Vietnamese and a Malaysian arrested.

It is said that these suspects, aged between 20 and 46, had been operating at the premises targeting South Korean victims online, since April.

The premises were used as accommodation and operation centers for the syndicate members.

The suspects are expected to be remanded from Tuesday onwards, as they have been taken to the Labuan Magistrates Court for a remand order.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia mengutuk sekeras-kerasnya insiden terbaharu pencerobohan Masjid Al-Aqsa oleh peneroka haram Zionis sambil mengibarkan bendera Israel di dalam kawasan suci tersebut.

Kementerian Luar Negeri menegaskan sebarang usaha untuk melakukan proses Yahudisasi terhadap Masjid Al-Aqsa adalah keji dan mencemarkan kesucian masjid ini.

Tindakan terbaharu oleh peneroka haram dengan sokongan rejim Zionis Israel, merupakan cubaan untuk mengubah realiti di lapangan serta ciri-ciri budaya, sejarah dan kesucian Masjid Al-Aqsa,” katanya melalui kenyataan yang disiarkan hari ini.

Tegasnya, tindakan sedemikian adalah bersifat provokatif dan tidak boleh diterima serta jelas mengabaikan peranan penjagaan terhadap tapak-tapak suci Islam di Baitulmaqdis.

Kenyataan itu turut menggesa masyarakat antarabangsa serta Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (PBB) agar tidak terus berdiam diri ketika permusuhan dan pencerobohan berlaku secara terang-terangan.

“Malaysia mengulangi seruannya agar tindakan segera dan konkrit diambil bagi menghentikan pelanggaran ini serta memastikan rejim Zionis Israel dipertanggungjawabkan sepenuhnya,” katanya.

Kenyataan itu turut mengulangi pendirian teguh Malaysia dalam menyokong penubuhan sebuah Negara Palestin yang merdeka dan berdaulat.

Jelasnya, sokongan tersebut berdasarkan sempadan pra-1967 dengan Baitulmaqdis Timur sebagai ibu negaranya.

Pada 31 Mei, sekumpulan ektremis Zionis dilaporkan telah mengibar bendera Israel sambil bergambar di hadapan Kubah Al-Sakhrah yang terletak di kawasan kompleks Masjid Al-Aqsa.

China Man Shocked To Discover 2 Sons Aren’t Biologically His After 22-Year Marriage

A divorced father in China has launched a legal battle after discovering that the two sons he raised for over two decades were allegedly not biologically related to him.

The emotional case has gone viral across Chinese social media, with many netizens debating family loyalty, DNA testing, inheritance disputes and marriage deception.

According to Chinese media reports, the man, surnamed Jiang, divorced his wife in 2023 after 22 years of marriage. During the divorce settlement, the couple agreed to divide their properties between their two sons, while Jiang also continued providing financial support for the elder son’s education and living expenses.

However, what appeared to be a standard divorce arrangement soon spiralled into a bitter family dispute that shocked many online.

Son’s Heated Remark Triggered DNA Suspicion

The revelation reportedly began in September 2024 after Jiang’s eldest son contacted him asking for money.

During the argument, the son allegedly blurted out a statement that changed Jiang’s life completely: “You are not my biological father.”

The comment left Jiang deeply suspicious. He later secretly collected a sample from the son’s toothbrush and arranged for a paternity test.

The results reportedly showed that Jiang was not biologically related to the eldest son.

Subsequent court findings later concluded that Jiang was also not biologically related to either of the two sons he had raised throughout the marriage.

Chinese media reported that the courts affirmed the findings partly because Jiang’s ex-wife and both sons allegedly refused to cooperate with official DNA testing procedures.

The case has since triggered widespread discussions online about paternity fraud, family law and financial compensation claims.

Father Seeks Compensation And Property Recovery

Following the discovery, Jiang filed legal action to overturn parts of the divorce agreement.

He is reportedly seeking to reclaim property assets that had been assigned to the sons during the divorce settlement. He also wants compensation for the years of child support, education expenses and emotional suffering he claims to have endured.

Jiang reportedly told the court that he had sacrificed much of his life and finances for the family, adding that no amount of money could compensate for the “20 years of youth” he had lost.

The man’s lawyer also made explosive allegations during proceedings, claiming there were reasons to suspect Jiang’s ex-wife, cousin and cousin-in-law may have conspired together to deceive him financially.

Those allegations have not been proven in court.

Ex-Wife And Sons Reject Test Results

Despite the court findings, Jiang’s ex-wife reportedly denied being unfaithful during the marriage and rejected the paternity test conclusions.

The eldest son also reportedly refused requests for another DNA test during court proceedings.

Chinese media stated that tensions became heated during one hearing, with Jiang and the eldest son getting into a verbal confrontation inside the courtroom.

Jiang further alleged that the son had physically assaulted him in the past.

The emotionally charged case continues to attract massive attention online in China, with many social media users expressing sympathy for Jiang, while others questioned the reliability and circumstances surrounding the DNA evidence.

The legal dispute over assets, inheritance rights and compensation is reportedly still ongoing.
