Philippines lost UN Security Council Bid

JUST IN: The Philippines loses its bid for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council (UNSC) against Kyrgyzstan, via a 49-142 vote, on Wednesday (June 3, 2026).

Manila failed to secure at least 128 votes, or the required two-thirds majority of the 191 UN members present at the UN General Assembly.

Prior to the final count, the UN General Assembly conducted three additional rounds of voting after the first cycle only yielded 85 votes for the Philippines and 105 for Kyrgyzstan.

The second and third balloting garnered 81 and 68 votes for Manila, and 110 and 123 for Bishkek.

Securing the four remaining Council seats available for term 2027 to 2028, meanwhile, were Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe.

The Department of Foreign Affairs, meanwhile, said the Philippines respects the UN member states' decision and extended its congratulations to Kyrgyzstan.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro: We thank the international community for the support and goodwill extended to the Philippines throughout our candidacy. Our campaign was anchored on our longstanding commitment to peace, dialogue, international law, and cooperation among nations. These remain principles that the Philippines will continue to uphold and advance in the global community.

The Philippines remains committed to working with all nations in pursuing peace, stability, sustainable development, and a rules-based international order. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas.

The five newly-elected members will replace Pakistan, Denmark, Panama, Somalia, and Greece whose term of office expires on Dec. 31, 2026. | Joyce Rocamora

Rubio says China cannot censor history of

WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- U.S. Secretary of State Rubio on Wednesday criticized Chinese authorities for attempting to erase memories of the bloody 1989 military crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

"Chinese students, workers and other civilians who lost their lives had gathered to exercise their natural rights and demand democratic reforms and accountability for corruption. We remember their lives and honor their legacy," Rubio said in a statement issued on the eve of the 37th anniversary of the incident.

The crushing of the peaceful demonstrations in the heart of the Chinese capital on June 4, 1989, which left at least hundreds dead, remains a taboo in China.

The Chinese government has consistently denied any wrongdoing, first describing the protests as a "counterrevolutionary riot," then as "political turmoil" that was settled and requires no further attention.

Rubio said, "No amount of censorship can erase the past," adding that "those who sacrificed to uphold their unalienable rights of free expression and peaceful assembly will be vindicated someday."

However, his statement was about half as long as last year's text, marking the 36th anniversary, amid U.S. President Donald Trump's softer stance on China.

Despite intense geopolitical rivalry and disputes over numerous issues, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Beijing in mid-May and agreed to stabilize bilateral relations in the years ahead.

https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/202606...00m/0in/022000c

China film about woman who killed husband banned

A feminist film which won an award at an international film festival last year has been ordered to withdraw its coming release for violating the law in China.

The film Her Heart Beats in Its Cage was scheduled to be screened in mainland cinemas on May 30.

But on May 21, Shanghai Film Bureau announced the release should be stopped because the film had breached the law when applying for its production and for its public release.

The authority said it had recently launched an investigation after receiving a large number of tip-offs from the public about the film.

The production team applied to the Shanghai authority in July 2021 for approval to shoot the film.

The bureau said it would impose a “serious punishment” without explaining the details of the penalty.

The film has been boasting that it is the adaptation of the “true story” of a woman who killed her husband by accident while fighting against his long-term domestic violence.

The actress who stars in the film, Zhao Xiaohong, is portrayed as a real-life domestic abuse victim.

In the film, Zhao serves 10 years in prison. After her release from jail, she worked hard to win back the understanding of her mother-in-law and her son, both of whom also acted in the film.

In September last year, Zhao won the Silver Shell award for Best Leading Performance at the 73rd San Sebastián International Film Festival in Spain.

However, as the film came under scrutiny in China in recent months, internet users found it problematic, the Dahe News reported.

The verdict in Zhao’s trial found that she used a fruit knife to stab her husband to death in their rented home in northwestern Shaanxi province in April 2019, during a quarrel over trivial matters.

No domestic violence was mentioned in the actual verdict, in contrast to Zhao’s persona in the film, that of a heroine resisting domestic violence.

Zhao was sentenced to prison for 15 years for the crime of intentional assault. She was released from prison in 2020, after her jail term was reduced.

Zhao started work on the film in 2019 when she was still an inmate.

The film’s director Qin Xiaoyu once told the media that they obtained the approval from the prison to let Zhao play in the film by saying that they were preparing a “documentary”, the news portal Sina reported.

But what they produced turned out to be a commercial film.

This is against the law because the China Prison Law stipulates that all prison activities must only serve the goal of education.

In early May, the famous Chinese actress Yao Chen, who is well known for focusing on feminist topics, supported the film by praising it as “the bravest performance I have ever seen”.

“Not because of her acting skills, but her life itself. She stood up from the ruins, living her life as a ray of light,” wrote Yao.

Yao soon deleted her post amid the wide controversy the film triggered.

Zhao’s social media accounts have also been banned.

The film has generated substantial discussion on mainland social media.

“We have banned those entertainers with previous misdeed records from appearing in public shows. Why did the authority allow a prisoner to play in a film?” asked one internet user.

Another person said: “I think the director and the investors behind it should all be punished.”

https://www.scmp.com/news/people-culture/ch...jav-z0OF9WA-f6w

From DAP supporters Fb page

DR SAM: WHAT HE DELIVERED FOR TERENGGANU

Many remain sceptical of Dr. Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as Chairman of Perikatan Nasional. Even Khairy Jamaluddin, who once openly praised and acknowledged Dr. Sam’s track record on Keluar Sekejap, now appears to have struck a different tone after formally throwing his hat into the “ring”.

Criticism and scrutiny are not only inevitable; they are necessary. They are the raw materials of improvement, the very traits that distinguish those who merely hold office from those who excel in it.

But scepticism, if left unchecked by facts, risks degenerating into noise. For criticism to carry weight, it must be anchored in reality, not perception.

What follows, therefore, is a fact-based account of Dr. Sam’s record in Terengganu, intended to challenge the prevailing narrative that his administration has underperformed.

I have chosen to write this in English to ensure it reaches a wider audience, particularly those more inclined toward English-language discourse.

Wallahu’alam

DR. YUSFARIZAL YUSSOFF
Ketua Penerangan
PAS Selangor

———————

What he has delivered in Terengganu so far includes:

1. State revenue in Terengganu surged from around RM250 million under the previous government to RM453 million under Dr. Sam.

2. State investments increased from less than RM1 billion in 2017 to over RM7 billion in 2025.

3. State debt dropped drastically to about RM200 million, down from nearly RM1 billion in 2017.

4. He pushed for Terengganu’s royalty rights, which had been revoked at the UMNO General Assembly (PAU).

5. He repaired collapsed and abandoned projects.

6. He returned land that had been taken from the people by the previous government.

7. He covered the costs for citizens admitted to third-class wards in government hospitals.

8. Residents no longer have to pay assessment tax (cukai pintu) for residential homes.

9. He turned around state-owned subsidiaries that were previously making losses—now profitable and recording the highest revenues in history.

(Points extracted from FB Page Teganukite)

Huawei touts chipmaking breakthrough to

Huawei Technologies Co said it has come up with a new pathway to shorten its gap with industry leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), potentially achieving a breakthrough in making advanced semiconductors without cutting-edge equipment.

Right now there is about a five-year gap between what TSMC is capable of and what Huawei together with its manufacturing partner Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) can produce. Huawei will start making 1.4-nanometer chips by 2031 with its own “LogicFolding” technology, Huawei’s semiconductor chief He Tingbo said in a rare public appearance during a chip conference on Monday, while TSMC has said that it will begin mass production of the same product in 2028.

He added that the Kirin mobile chips to be launched this fall will be the first to adopt the LogicFolding architecture, which helps boost performance of a chip by increasing the number of transistors it carries and optimising data transmission speed.

“This year we have prepared a surprise for the whole industry. Not saturation, not continuation, but a big leap ahead,” she said. Shares of SMIC rose more than 19% in Shanghai after He’s announcement.

If Huawei can manage to make 1.4nm semiconductors in large quantities, it means it’s defying the industry consensus that Dutch supplier ASML Holding NV’s state-of-the-art extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines are necessary to mass-produce chips that are 5nm or more advanced. Such semiconductors are used to power the most sophisticated AI technologies.

The nanometer measure is used to indicate the size of transistors on a chip. The smaller a transistor becomes, the more can be fitted on a chip, which in turn will become more powerful. ASML’s EUV machines are seen as essential in shrinking transistors, and they are used widely by leading global chipmakers including TSMC, Samsung Electronics Co and Intel Corp for mass production.

While Huawei’s He said that her team has found a way for “sustainable evolution”, she did not specify how the company will be able to advance its chipmaking prowess significantly without the use of EUV.

The executive added that the LogicFolding architecture is based on Huawei’s own Tau Scaling Law, a principle the Chinese company is adopting to rival Moore’s Law, the guideline for the global chip industry for decades. Moore’s Law, named after Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, is an extrapolation that the numbers of transistors in a chip will roughly double about every two years, though many in the industry including He say the cadence has been slowing down in recent years.

He said that Huawei’s scaling efforts based on Moore’s Law plateaued six years ago after US export controls hit. Her team then proposed a new “time scaling” method to replace the global industry’s gold standard. Huawei’s new principle appears to focus on boosting data transmission speed by transistors to compensate for a lack of state-of-the-art equipment to shrink those components significantly further.

“We saw time scaling can deliver strong benefits across devices, circuits, chips and systems,” He said, adding that Huawei has designed and made 381 chips over the past six years based on the Tau Scaling Law. Huawei in a separate statement said that the company is dubbing its new principle “Her’s Law”, in a nod to its chip chief.

The Tau Scaling Law is a summary of some current trends in the semiconductor industry, but it appears to be the first attempt by a company to formulate these ideas into a coherent theory, according to Kitty Fok, managing director of research firm IDC China.

“It may also provide a new reference point for China’s semiconductor industry in overcoming process-node constraints,” Fok said.

The Shenzhen firm has previously filed for patents that show it is trying so-called self-aligned quadruple patterning, or SAQP, that may allow it to produce advanced chips without ASML’s EUV machines. Quadruple patterning is a technique for etching lines on silicon wafers multiple times to increase transistor density — and therefore performance.

While Huawei has continued to improve its technologies over the past few years, it is unclear whether it will indeed be able to reach the cutting edge of chipmaking by experimenting with a non-mainstream path.

Huawei has been at the vanguard of Beijing’s semiconductor self-sufficiency drive following a years-long US-led, multinational campaign to tighten exports of advanced chips and gear that have somewhat curbed China’s AI progress.

In September, Huawei announced a three-year roadmap to roll out a series of AI chips to fill in the vacuum left by Nvidia Corp, whose most advanced semiconductors are banned for China.

https://theedgemalaysia.com/node/804808

Dear You Breaks 1 Billion Yuan: Chaoshan Dialect Film Becomes Highest-ROI Chinese Film Ever

Chaoshan dialect film Dear You surpassed 1 billion yuan at the box office on May 24, 2026, achieving over 70x ROI on a 14 million yuan budget—the highest in Chinese cinema history. It became the first domestic production to break 1 billion yuan after the Spring Festival season.

From Near-Cancellation to Phenomenon

Released April 30 with 1.6% screen allocation and 3.77 million yuan opening day, industry predicted under 50 million total. With a 9.1 Douban score and 23% occupancy, it reversed course. By day eight it topped daily charts. Mother's Day brought 36 million yuan single-day record. From May 16, daily box office exceeded 100 million yuan. Projections suggest 1.7-2.5 billion yuan final total.

Authenticity as Competitive Advantage

Success stems from radical authenticity. All cast were non-professional: 84-year-old Wu Shaoqing improvised changing a crying scene to "let me check if the olive vegetable cooled down," creating the film's most emotional moment. Lead actress Li Siqing was a finance student returning to campus between shoots.

Production used guerrilla filmmaking: iPads as monitors, tricycles carrying cameras, smartphones for reshoots. Ninety percent of Thai scenes were constructed in Jieyang, Guangdong. The narrative drew from 300 real Chaoshan family letters, with dialogue sourced from historical documents.

Cultural Impact

The film triggered broader cultural impact: tourist traffic to Shantou's Old Quarter increased 200%, dining consumption rose 28%. Celebrities including Li Xian and Jia Ling shared crying photos from screenings. Southeast Asian Chinese organized group viewings. Audiences reported crying over "long-missed sense of security"—the film's portrayal of authentic love and regional identity resonated across boundaries.

#DearYou #ChineseFilm #BoxOffice #CulturalPhenomenon

The heroic but tragic tale of Malaya’s forgotten

Back in 1939, hundreds of Nanyang Volunteers from Penang embarked on a dangerous mission to aid Chinese frontliners in the Sino-Japanese War in China.

Among the battalion of brave volunteers stood one Penangite named Li Yue Mei, a woman who refused to be subjected to the stereotypes of her time.

Instead of signing up as a nurse, she craftily concealed her female identity and in doing so, is now remembered as the only female driver to serve in the Nanyang Volunteer force.

Li was just 21 years old when she left Penang. Dressed in her brother’s clothing, she successfully snuck through the ranks and enlisted herself as a male driver and mechanic.

To complete her ruse, she changed her name to Li Dan Ying and was thus drafted as one the volunteers destined for the treacherous terrains of the 1,154 km-long Burma Road.

The route itself, which stretched from Kunming, China all the way to Yangon Port in British Burma, was constructed by the Chinese government to keep Japanese forces at bay.

Li’s perilous journey began in March 1939 as she transported essential war materials to China across the Burma Road.

Like thousands of Nanyang Volunteers, she was also constantly in danger, having to deal with the chills of malaria, horrific accidents along the dangerous Burma Road and frequent Japanese air raids, all of which cost many lives.

Despite this, Li persevered and still managed to shield her female identity from her male colleagues, that is, until she got into a road accident in 1940.

Thankfully, she was saved by fellow co-driver Yang Wei Quan who quickly rushed her to a hospital. As Yang stood by her bedside, his worry turned into shock after discovering that Li Dan Ying was in fact, a beautiful woman.

Naturally, news of Li’s true identity and her brave heroics soon reached home and was met by admiration from many Malayan women.

Unfortunately, the discovery of Li’s true identity led to her being discharged as a transport driver but she was still allowed to continue serving as a nurse, a role she also thrived in.

Like Disney’s version of Mulan, Li eventually fell in love with Yang and in 1946, the couple tied the knot and returned home as heroes. Sadly, Malaya’s Mulan didn’t have a happy ending.

Upon returning to Penang, the newlyweds were immediately forced to pack their bags and flee to Burma, as the Japanese army had occupied Malaya.

Once in Burma, Li and Yang settled into a peaceful life whilst running a quaint coffee shop and raising their small army of 10 children. However, a casual meeting with the Chinese Premier Zhou En Lai in 1954, changed everything for the family.

Being aware of her famous heroics, the Chinese Premier encouraged Li to send her children to study in China, much to her husband’s disagreement.

In a bid to give her children the best education, Li and her children eventually made for China in 1965, leaving Yang behind in Burma.

To her dismay, Li and her kids were harassed upon arriving in their motherland during the early stages of China’s violent sociopolitical movement – the Cultural Revolution.

As Li’s father was a businessman and a nationalist who also served as a Nanyang Volunteer, Li and her family were faced with allegations of having capitalist connections. With that, the family was cast into the countryside where she was constantly humiliated by the Red Guards who mocked her in the streets and physically harassed her in public.

Engulfed by the humiliation and abuse, Li eventually succumbed to her dismal state of mind and took her own life on the night of Aug 28, 1968, by slashing her own wrists and thrusting a knife through her once zealous and kind heart.

After awakening to the horrendous sight of their mother’s own massacre, Li’s children weren’t allowed to pay their respects or grieve, as the Red Guards ordered them to disown their mother for being an enemy to the Cultural Revolution.

Li’s remains were tossed into a nylon mosquito net and left to rot in an unmarked grave for years until her children eventually brought her remains back to Burma in 1976.

Although her life ended in tragedy, Li Yue Mei was recognised as a war hero on Oct 23, 1976 by the Chinese government. But to Malaysians, she will always be remembered as the Penangite who gave her all in service of her loved ones and fellow man.

Source and image credit: Free Malaysia Today

Pic 1 - Li Yue Mei dressed up as a man and snuck out of Penang in 1939 to serve at the frontlines of the Sino-Japanese War.
Pic 2 - Nanyang Volunteers were recruited from all over Southeast Asia and were drivers and mechanics who delivered essential war supplies to China’s army.
Pic 3 - Li dressed in her Nanyang Volunteer uniform.
Pic 4 - A photo from the 1950s of Li with her children and her husband Yang Wei Quan.

Raymond Wong found guilty of insider trading

#RaymondWong (黄百鸣) Found Guilty in Insider Trading Case ⚖️

79-year-old Hong Kong film producer and actor #RaymondWong (黄百鸣) has officially been found guilty of insider trading by Hong Kong’s Eastern Magistrates’ Court, with sentencing scheduled for June 9.

The case centers around events from 2017 during Raymond Wong’s time as chairman of Pegasus Motion Pictures, later renamed Transmit Entertainment. According to the court, he possessed confidential information regarding a major company acquisition before it became public.

Between August and October 2017, Raymond Wong allegedly transferred HK$2.5 million to his younger sister and instructed her through WhatsApp messages to buy company shares, including messages such as:
• “If it drops below 0.2 tomorrow, buy everything”
• “Buy before market close”

His sister later reportedly purchased around HK$1.56 million worth of shares 📱

The timeline quickly became one of the biggest focuses of the case:
• October 17, 2017: company shares surged over 47% in one day
• October 25, 2017: Raymond Wong sold a 58.71% company stake for approximately HK$486 million
• Following trading day: shares rose another 12.5%

The court rejected Raymond Wong’s explanations, including claims that the messages were misunderstood jokes or unrelated to stock trading. WhatsApp chat records were accepted as key evidence during the ruling.

Under Hong Kong securities law, insider trading can carry:
• Up to 10 years imprisonment
• Fines reaching HK$10 million
• Potential lifetime ban from serving as a listed company director

The news shocked many viewers because Raymond Wong remains one of the most influential figures from Hong Kong cinema’s golden era. As founder of Cinema City, he helped create classics such as:
• Happy Ghost
• All’s Well, Ends Well
• Aces Go Places
• Ip Man franchise as producer 🎬

The case has now sparked wider discussions about celebrity involvement in corporate finance, entertainment capital operations, and legal accountability regardless of industry legacy.

What is the first Raymond Wong movie you remember watching? 👀

#HongKongCinema #HongKongEntertainment

Ebola outbreak fuels mounting global alarm

An Ebola outbreak in central Africa, which the World Health Organization has declared a public health emergency of international concern, is sparking increasing global alarm.

More than 300 suspected cases and 88 suspected deaths have been reported, primarily in Congo but also in neighboring Uganda.

A person from the U.S. has tested positive for Ebola in connection to the outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday.

The person was exposed as part of their work in Congo, developed symptoms over the weekend and tested positive late Sunday, according to Dr. Satish Pillai, the CDC’s Ebola response incident manager.

In addition to the one symptomatic person, six other Americans are being moved for treatment or observation.

Asked at a White House event Monday if Americans should be concerned about Ebola, President Donald Trump replied,“I’m concerned about everything, but certainly am. I think that, you know, it’s been confined right now to Africa, and but it’s something that has had a breakout.”

https://www.nbcnews.com/world/africa/new-eb...ffec-rcna345633
Kdrama implies Korea is a vassal state of China

K-drama Perfect Crown has addressed backlash for inaccuracies related to the portrayal of the royal coronation ceremony.

On Saturday (May 16), the production team behind the series led by IU and Byeon Woo-seok released a statement acknowledging criticism from viewers over historical inaccuracies in the coronation scene in the second-to-last episode.

The scene in question is the depiction of Prince I-an’s ascension to the throne, which included chants of "Cheonse". Meaning “Long live for 1,000 years”, fans and critics argued that this term was used historically for rulers of lower rank and state monarchs.

They believe the show should have used “Manse” instead, which means “Long live for 10,000 years”, used traditionally for an independent sovereign ruler.

Some viewers also pointed out that the crown shown in the scene featured nine strands of beads, known as the Guryu Myeollyugwan, instead of the traditional 12, which is the Sibi Myeollyugwan, associated with a sovereign monarchy.

In the statement posted on the official homepage of the series, the team behind Perfect Crown wrote: “We sincerely apologise to viewers who have supported the drama with love for causing concern over issues related to the series’ fictional setting and historical accuracy.”

“The production team failed to carefully examine how Joseon court protocols changed over the course of history. As Perfect Crown is both a romance and an alternate-history drama, we should have been much more cautious and considerate when approaching the points at which the fictional world intersects with real history, but we fell short in refining the world-building and reviewing the details more thoroughly.”

The team added that it will “revise the relevant audio and subtitles as quickly as possible for future rebroadcasts, VOD [video-on-demand] and streaming services”.

The backlash comes even as the series has continued to perform strongly in ratings and online popularity rankings throughout its run, which concluded on May 16.

IU also appeared to indirectly address criticism during an event marking the show’s finale, where she told fans she would reflect on any shortcomings and strive to improve, though she did not explicitly reference the controversy.

Set in a reimagined contemporary Korea where the monarchy still exists in 2026, Perfect Crown follows a contractual marriage between Seong Hee-ju, a wealthy heiress to the nation's top conglomerate (played by IU), and second son to the king, Prince I-an (portrayed by Byeon).

https://cnalifestyle.channelnewsasia.com/en...ney-plus-583236
