JPJ suspends online vehicle ownership transfers

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has announced the suspension of the online service for change of vehicle ownership effective today, encompassing all digital channels, including public portal, kiosks, JPJ business partners MyEG and eAuto Sdn Bhd.

JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the immediate control measure was taken following several official and social media complaints about incidents where vehicle ownership was changed without the knowledge of their registered owners.

“JPJ views the matter seriously, especially those involving maintenance and the safety record of vehicles registered in the department’s system.

“As such, beginning May 25, all vehicle ownership change matters for individual ownership and private company ownership must be conducted through JPJ counters,” he said in a statement yesterday.

For individual ownership, the transaction can be completed on the same day at state JPJ offices and branch offices, while for private company category, the confirmation process and approval will take five to seven working days from the date of complete document submission.

Meanwhile, for the eAuto service provider channel, Aedy Fadly said that only transactions under the Temporary Ownership Transfer System (STMS) are still operating as usual.

However, the permanent ownership transfer system through the eSerahan Tukar Milik (eSTM) system has been suspended, and any parties, including used car companies wishing to carry out such transactions, must submit their applications at state JPJ offices or branch offices.

Anwar takes over Pandan as adopted constituency

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president, has taken over Pandan as his adopted parliamentary constituency following the departure of its former MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli from the party.

PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said Prime Minister’s senior political adviser Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz had meanwhile been appointed as the party’s monitoring officer for the constituency.

The Selangor Menteri Besar said the move was part of the party leadership’s effort to reorganise the administration of the parliamentary service centre and party machinery in the constituency.

“So we have arranged for (Tengku Zafrul) to serve as the government’s representative and, of course, the Prime Minister’s representative in Pandan,” he said during his speech at the Himpunan Setia Keadilan Pandan gathering here yesterday.

Amirudin said Tengku Zafrul’s appointment to oversee Pandan was made at Anwar’s own request, as the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) chairman wanted to play a more active role in Selangor politics.

“Tengku Zafrul has also been entrusted to monitor the Ampang parliamentary constituency. However, the leadership in Ampang consists of PKR members, so I do not want to interfere further. But if any issues arise in Ampang, Tengku Zafrul can also look into them,” he said.

According to Amirudin, although the party faced challenges in managing constituencies vacated by former PKR leaders, it had not disrupted or weakened the party’s services and operations.

“This is not something new. We experienced this before involving former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali in Gombak and former vice-president Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin in Ampang.

“That was how we managed the administration and, in the end, our victory margin in Ampang increased compared with the previous election,” he said.

US pauses $14bn arms sale to Taiwan

The US is pausing a $14bn (£10.4bn) arms sale to Taiwan to ensure it has enough weapons for the Iran war, acting Navy secretary Hung Cao has said.

Cao confirmed this at a Senate hearing, days after President Donald Trump appeared non-committal about the sale following his meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

A spokesperson for Taiwan's presidential office told reporters on Friday that they had not received any information about "US adjustments to the arms sale".

The sale of US arms to Taiwan has long irked Beijing, which claims the self-governed island as its territory and has not ruled out taking it by force.

"Right now we're doing a pause in order to make sure we have the munitions we need for Epic Fury - which we have plenty," Cao said at the hearing on Thursday, using the code name for the US-Israel joint military operation in Iran.

"We're just making sure we have everything, but then the foreign military sales will continue when the administration deems necessary."

When asked what he had heard from the Taiwanese about a pause in the weapons sale, Cao said he had "not spoken to the Taiwanese".

The $14bn package has been waiting for Trump's approval for months. It includes air defence missiles, such as Lockheed Martin's PAC-3, and surface-to-air missile systems, according to a Reuters report in March.

Trump has yet to confirm that he would give final approval to the package, telling Fox News last week that it was "a very good negotiating chip" with China.

He also told reporters he would "make a determination over the next fairly short period" on the weapons sale to Taiwan.

Those comments came fresh off a presidential summit in Beijing, where Xi had told Trump that Taiwan was the most important issue between the US and China.

Trump later told reporters that he had discussed US arms sales to Taiwan "in great detail" with Xi - even though according to a 1982 US assurance to Taiwan, the US had pledged not to consult Beijing on the matter.

Trump has also said he would talk directly to Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te about the sale, which would be a sharp departure from diplomatic tradition and is likely to anger Beijing.

US and Taiwanese leaders have not spoken directly for decades, although Trump spoke to Lai's predecessor Tsai Ing-wen when Trump was president-elect.

Beijing had lodged vehement opposition last December when the US approved a $11bn (£8.2bn) arms sale to Taiwan - one of the largest such packages ever. China's foreign ministry said at the time it would "accelerate the push towards a dangerous and violent situation across the Taiwan Strait".

Sabah Water Dept director gets total 96 years jail

Former Sabah Water Department director Ag Mohd Tahir Mohd Talib has been sentenced to a total of 96 years’ jail and fined a total of RM284.3 million in default 78 months’ jail by the Sessions Court here for 12 counts of money laundering.

His wife Fauziah Piut and former deputy director Lim Lam Beng @ Lim Chee Hong were discharged and acquitted from separate money laundering charges.

Ag Mohd Tahir, Fauziah, and Lim were tried together before Judge Abu Bakar Manat.

Abu Bakar imposed the sentences on Ag Mohd Tahir, 63, after finding him guilty on all counts after a full trial.

In his reserved decision, the judge among others ruled that Ag Mohd Tahir’s defence was an afterthought which was not enough to prove reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case.

Ag Mohd Tahir was convicted of 11 charges under under Section 4 (1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 and one charge under Section 4(1)(a) of the same Act.

He committed the offences at his then office here, a house in Sembulan, at bank branches, at a condominium, in Sulaman, and a tower in Kuala Lumpur between Oct 4 and Nov 4, 2016.

For each of the first to the 12th counts, Ag Mohd Tahir was sentenced to eight years in jail. The sentences are to run concurrently.

He was also fined RM120 million, RM50 million, and RM46 million respectively for the first three charges, RM5 million each for the fourth to the ninth charge, RM21 million for the 10th charge, RM10 million for the 11th charge, and RM7.3 million for the 12th charge.

Should he fail to settle the fines, he is liable to between six and 12 months’ jail for each of the 12 charges.

Kerajaan Terengganu menyediakan pinjaman sehingga RM5,000 tanpa faedah menerusi Skim Pinjaman Pembelian Motosikal di bawah Yayasan Pembangunan Usahawan (YPU) bagi membantu belia dan golongan B40 meningkatkan mobiliti untuk bekerja serta berniaga.

Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Keusahawanan, Sumber Manusia, Koperasi dan Hal Ehwal Pengguna negeri, Dato’ Ariffin Deraman berkata, skim berkonsep Qardhul Hassan itu memberi kemudahan pinjaman tanpa caj keuntungan dan tanpa unsur riba.

Menurutnya, peminjam hanya perlu membayar semula jumlah sebenar yang dipinjam mengikut tempoh ditetapkan.

“Kerajaan negeri mahu membantu rakyat terutama anak muda yang memerlukan motosikal untuk bekerja, menjalankan perniagaan atau mencari sumber pendapatan.

“Melalui skim ini, pemohon boleh mendapatkan pembiayaan sehingga RM5,000 tanpa dikenakan faedah tambahan,” katanya.

Beliau berkata demikian selepas Program Himpunan Pemandu dan Pemandu E-Hailing di Dewan Sivik Bukit Payung, di sini.

Menurutnya, syarat permohonan turut dipermudahkan apabila pemohon tidak lagi diwajibkan memiliki lesen perniagaan Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SSM).

Beliau menyatakan bahawa skim itu juga kini dibuka kepada semua jenis perniagaan dan tidak lagi tertumpu kepada sektor gig sahaja.

Tambahnya, permohonan terbuka kepada rakyat Terengganu berumur antara 18 hingga 40 tahun dan boleh dibuat terus dengan YPU tanpa perlu melalui pejabat Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN).

“Setiap DUN diperuntukkan lima penerima membabitkan keseluruhan 32 DUN di seluruh negeri,” ujarnya.

Ariffin berkata, antara syarat lain ialah pemohon mestilah Bumiputera, menetap di Terengganu lebih 10 tahun, berdaftar sebagai pemilih negeri, memiliki lesen memandu B1, mempunyai penyata bank aktif serta seorang penjamin yang tidak disenarai hitam.

Menurutnya, tempoh bayaran balik dilanjutkan sehingga empat tahun dengan anggaran bayaran sekitar RM100 sebulan.

OpenAI launches ChatGPT for personal finance

On Friday, OpenAI launched a new set of personal finance tools in preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the U.S., letting them connect their accounts and ask questions ranging from spending analysis to future financial planning.

OpenAI has partnered with the financial connection service Plaid to manage the account connections. Users can connect to over 12,000 financial institutions, including Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One. Once users connect these accounts, they will see a dashboard of their portfolio performance, spending, subscriptions, and upcoming payments.

The new product comes just one month after OpenAI acquired the team behind personal finance startup Hiro, which was backed by firms like Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive, in April. OpenAI said that the Hiro team’s expertise in finance was useful in launching this product but didn’t specify if the entire feature was built by them.

OpenAI users can access the tool by selecting “Get started” in the “Finances” option in the sidebar, or typing “@Finances, connect my accounts” in a ChatGPT conversation. Once users do that, the chatbot will guide them about linking accounts through Plaid. The company said it plans to support Intuit soon, which would enable analysis such as the impact of a stock sale on taxes or the odds of a credit card approval.

According to OpenAI, more than 200 million users already ask financial questions to ChatGPT every month. The company also noted that the new GPT-5.5 model is stronger at reasoning with context, which is crucial for answering finance-related questions. The company said it worked with finance experts to create a benchmark for the model to improve on personal finance questions.

With the new financial tool integration, users can get detailed answers to questions such as “I feel like I’ve been spending more recently. Has anything changed?” or “Help me build a plan to be ready to buy a house in my area in the next 5 years.”

Users can go to Settings > Apps > Finances to remove connections to certain accounts if they want. Once they disconnect a service, the synced data will be removed from ChatGPT in 30 days. What’s more, users can also view and delete financial memories from the Finances page.

Generalized chatbots are designed to answer anything, leading people to ask questions about data-sensitive topics such as health, finance, and personal life. AI companies are realizing this and making specialized products for these sectors. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have launched health-related tools. Earlier this month, Perplexity launched its own financial research product based on its Computer agent.

OpenAI said its personal finance tools will be available on ChatGPT on the web and on iOS for Pro users. It noted that, based on the feedback from these users, it wants to improve the product before making it available to Plus users.

The Cabinet has approved a new, alternative entry pathway for students from religious schools, private schools, and Chinese independent secondary schools into the nation's public universities (IPTAs).

In a statement today, the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) announced that the decision creates clearer and more inclusive access for students from outside the national education system, including holders of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

Under the new framework, two distinct pathways are now available.

First, students from these streams who possess a full Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) certificate may apply for any study programme offered through the standard UPUOnline system.

Their applications will be considered based on merit alongside all other candidates, subject to meeting the general and specific programme requirements.

Second, for those without a full SPM but who have passed the SPM papers for Bahasa Melayu and History, a new pathway has been created for them to apply to a specific list of relevant degree and diploma programmes.

For religious and tahfiz school graduates under this second pathway, the identified programmes include studies in Dakwah (Islamic Outreach), Al-Quran and As-Sunnah, and Tahfiz Education.

Meanwhile, for graduates of Chinese independent secondary schools, the available courses focus on Chinese language and cultural studies, such as a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Language Studies and a Bachelor of Chinese Language and Linguistics.

The ministry stressed that all applications will be processed based on the principle of meritocracy and are subject to the final approval of each university's Senate.

Azam Baki bids farewell to MACC

Tan Sri Azam Baki clocked out of the Malaysian Anti‑Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters for the final time today as his tenure as chief commissioner officially ended.

Azam urged all MACC personnel to give their full support and cooperation to the incoming leadership, saying the organisation must remain strong and relevant.

“This organisation must remain relevant as envisioned by the earlier leadership. I am only continuing the legacy left behind for the sake of the country and the people,” he said, according to The Star.

He expressed gratitude to the organising committee and MACC officers for the farewell tribute, noting that he had served 42 years in the public sector.

“I am very touched and deeply moved by the support shown by my officers in accompanying me on my retirement at the age of 63,” he said.

Azam began his career with the Anti‑Corruption Agency (BPR) before continuing under the MACC, describing his four‑decade journey as one filled with invaluable experience and challenges.

He became emotional when speaking about his family, calling them his strongest supporters during difficult times.

“My family are my strongest supporters. They had to face challenges and hardship they should never have had to endure,” he said, adding that he was thankful for their calm and support.

Azam also thanked members of the media for their role in sharing information and for supporting him during his tenure as MACC chief commissioner.

“I am truly touched by the support of all my media friends, whether from online portals, electronic media, mainstream media and so on,” he said, according to Bernama.

After six years leading the MACC, Azam said its achievements were the result of collective effort and not individual leadership.

He credited the esprit de corps among MACC officers as a key force behind the organisation’s success in facing challenges and adapting to changes in the crime landscape.

Azam closed his farewell by apologising for any shortcomings during his tenure.

“I seek forgiveness and apologise for any shortcomings in administering and managing this organisation. Truly, all weaknesses came from myself,” he said.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck sued by Miami police

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are being sued through their production company, Artists Equity, over their latest Netflix crime thriller, The Rip, which Miami police allege falsely depicts them as “dirty.”

Released in January, the movie, starring Damon and Affleck, opens with a disclaimer that it is “inspired by true events.” Writer and director Joe Carnahan has previously discussed that it was based on the 2016 Miami Lakes narcotics raid, during which the Miami-Dade Police Department — now known as the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Department — seized more than $24 million in laundered cash, marking the largest money forfeiture in Miami-Dade history.

In a new lawsuit, multiple officers involved in the original 2016 bust have claimed that the film has caused “unfair reputational harm,” according to local outlet 7 News Miami.

Speaking to the outlet, Jonathan Santana, the lead detective of the 2016 case, said: “When you rip something, you’re stealing something. We never stole a dollar.”

Santana said that while he was previously praised for his work on the 10-year-old case, since The Rip’s premiere, he has been mocked by people, “pretty much saying, you know, how many buckets of money did I steal?”

The film sees Damon and Affleck reunite on-screen as the lead officers conducting the drug raid. After discovering the enormous sum of cash, the team’s alliance and trust are tested. Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Scott Adkins and Steven Yeun also feature.

The lawsuit also alleges that The Rip included fabricated storylines to portray police corruption, cartel dealings and even murder. The complaint cites numerous scenes from the film, including moments in which officers deceive suspects, maintain direct contact with the cartel and consider illegally pocketing a portion of the uncovered money.

“They portrayed police officers as dirty, they portrayed my clients as dirty,” Santana’s lawyer, Ignacio Alvarez, argued. “Now their reputations are hurt.”

He added: “My clients are now hurt for the rest of their lives with everybody perceives that they’re dirty.”

The Independent has contacted Alvarez and Artists Equity for comment.

This is not the first time The Rip has faced backlash. Immediately following the movie’s release, Hialeah Mayor Bryan Calvo argued that it portrayed his city as dangerous and disrespected his law enforcement.

Malaysia aspires to export K9

Malaysia aspires to become a K9 tracker dog breeding hub in Asean through the K9 Operations Centre under the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the aspiration is achievable as JBPM has highly skilled officers with expertise in training tracker dogs.

He said the initiative would not only enable Malaysia to produce ‘home-grown champions’, but also position the country as an exporter, thereby reducing costs previously incurred in importing trained K9 tracker dogs from Birmingham, United Kingdom.

“A trained dog with a warranty of expertise was imported from Birmingham at a cost of nearly RM150,000.

“My vision is that one day we will be able to export them back to the United Kingdom and make the K9 Operations Centre a breeding hub in Asean, allowing us to sell to Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and others,” he told reporters after launching the World Firefighters’ Day Carnival 2026 here today.

Nga said it is time for Malaysia to move towards becoming a K9 breeding nation rather than continuing to rely on foreign countries, while expressing confidence in JBPM’s expertise in training tracker dogs.

Earlier in his speech, he said JBPM has planned to develop a K9 Operations Centre in Bertam, Penang, which will carry out a domestic breeding programme.

He said the centre is currently in the design and tender procurement stage.

He added that the Madani Government has approved an allocation of RM2.4 million for the procurement of 16 new tracker dogs from the United Kingdom.

“JBPM currently has only 34 tracker dogs and still requires another 56 to achieve optimal operational capacity,” he added.

US releases UFO files

Cold War reports of mysterious rotating saucers; recent sightings of metallic elliptical objects floating in mid-air. Those and other reports of unidentified anomalous phenomena or UAPs — the military's term for UFOs — are described in a trove of documents released by the Department of Defense on Friday.

In all, the Pentagon released more than 160 records, citing President Trump's call for unprecedented transparency in giving the public access to federal and military records related to unexplained encounters with strange phenomena.

President Trump said via Truth Social that with the documents and other records available to the public, "the people can decide for themselves, 'WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?' Have Fun and Enjoy!"

The records are posted to a specialized web portal, war.gov/info, which will house additional files as they're released on a rolling basis.

"These files, hidden behind classifications, have long fueled justified speculation — and it's time the American people see it for themselves," Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in a Defense Department posting on Facebook as it made the files public.

Friday's action "is the first in what will be an ongoing joint declassification and release effort," Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said.

One document cites unusual phenomena arising during the debriefing of the Apollo 11 technical crew in July of 1969, attributing three observations to astronaut Buzz Aldrin, from that lunar mission: "one, an object on the way out to the Moon; two, flashes of light inside the cabin; and three, a sighting on the return trip of a bright light tentatively assumed by the crew to be a laser."

One of the oldest files dates from November 1948. The report from the U.S. Air Force Directorate of Intelligence is marked Top Secret, and it notes recurring instances of unidentified objects spotted in the skies over Europe.

"They have been reported by so many sources and from such a variety of places that we are convinced that they cannot be disregarded," the report states, "and must be explained on some basis which is perhaps slightly beyond the scope of our present intelligence thinking."

The report goes on to say that U.S. officers consulted their peers in Sweden's intelligence service about the objects, and they were told, "these phenomena are obviously the result of a high technical skill which cannot be credited to any presently known culture on earth."

That document is seemingly free of redactions. But many details in a more recent entry are obscured, as it relays the account of a woman with deep experience with U.S. military aircraft and drones who reported an inexplicable sighting in September of 2023, in an area where airspace had been closed for testing purposes.

Materials related to that incident include a composite sketch of an ovaloid metallic object floating above a treeline, with a bright light at one end of the object.

"They watched the object for five to ten seconds and then the object just disappeared," the report states.

Several people in at least two cars corroborated the sighting, according to the report. It states that the unidentified woman who spoke to the FBI " would not have reported the object if she had seen it by herself."

And hinting at the stigma that is seen as a prevalent challenge to collecting and discussing such eyewitness accounts, the report states, "Several of her co-workers subsequently made fun of her due to her report."

Some records include venerable witnesses — such as a well-known case in 1955, when a group led by then-Sen. Richard Russell, who chaired the Senate Armed Services Committee at the time, reported that they saw two strange objects from the window of a train in the former Soviet Union. The group, which included U.S. Army Lt. Col. E. U. Hathaway, reported seeing what looked to be "flying disc aircraft."

Malaysia mulling ‘filial responsibility’ law

The government is considering a new law that would legally obligate children to care for their ageing parents, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

Speaking to reporters after launching the National Social Policy Action Plan 2026-2030, Zahid said the proposed legislation aims to introduce a legal framework placing clearer emphasis on filial responsibility.

“The proposed law will focus on the responsibility of children in caring for their parents,” he said.

“Several countries have already implemented similar legislation, but Malaysia is still at the stage of discussion and review.”

Zahid has instructed the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development to prepare a policy paper on the proposed Act within six months.

The paper will then be presented to the Cabinet for policy approval before any legislative drafting begins.

The deputy prime minister stressed that the move is crucial to ensure that Malaysia’s social and moral fabric remains intact as it progresses toward developed nation status.

He also warned against the erosion of religious and cultural values, stressing the need to balance material development with spiritual and moral obligations.

“All races and religions place importance on the duty of caring for one’s parents, although different countries may adopt different approaches,” Zahid added.

“Malaysia has its own social values and identity that must be preserved and strengthened.”

He confirmed that the government will study legal models from other countries that have enacted similar "filial responsibility" laws.

However, he gave his assurance that any framework developed for Malaysia will be carefully aligned with local culture, religious sensitivities, and social conditions.

New MyKad with advanced encryption

The new MyKad, which is expected to be introduced next month, will feature 53 security elements compared with 23 on the current version.

National Registration Director-General Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias said the upgraded security features include laser engraving, ultraviolet (UV) elements, holograms, guilloche patterns, microtext, QR codes for enforcement purposes, and a chip with enhanced encryption technology.

“It certainly has better security features than what is available now.

“The launch will be announced by the Home Ministry when the time comes, and at the National Registration Department (NRD) level, we are ready for that purpose,” he told reporters after the NRD Management Meeting with the Media today.

Badrul Hisham said the introduction of the new MyKad reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening identity security in line with technological advancements and evolving security challenges.

He added that updated versions of MyPoCA and MyTentera will also be introduced next month.

At the same time, he clarified that the new MyKad would not include the Touch ‘n Go feature.

Meanwhile, Badrul Hisham said the media engagement session was organised to strengthen ties between the NRD and media practitioners.

“At the same time, the NRD also expresses its appreciation to media partners who have worked closely with the department in delivering authentic information to the public,” he said.
