PETALING JAYA: An Indonesian labourer died following an accident where he was crushed by a lorry that was driven by a 15-year-old on Jalan Utama, Ladang Kosma in Rompin on Saturday (July 18).

The victim, Hendrawan, 24, died while receiving treatment for severe head injuries at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan on Tuesday (July 21), reported Sinar Harian.

Rompin OCPD Superintendent Sharif Shai Sharif Mondoi said the victim was on his motorcycle, heading towards Ladang Kosma with another 24-year-old pillion rider before the incident at about 5.45pm.

"The lorry was driven by a 15-year-old who did not have a licence.

"He is believed to have lost control of the lorry before it swerved to the right and fell on the motorcycle," he said in a statement on Wednesday (July 22).

"The pillion rider managed to save himself and was unharmed," he added.

Supt Sharif Shai said the lorry driver sustained injuries to his right hand and leg, while a 17-year-old passenger in the same vehicle injured his left eye.

"The driver has five summonses for various offences.

"Both vehicles also do not have valid road tax," he said, adding that the case would be investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act.

WHO says Hantavirus outbreak linked to ship is over

Director-general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the final contact of a person exposed to hantavirus on the MV Hondius had completed their quarantine period, tested negative and returned home.
No further cases have been reported since 25 May and the "WHO considers the hantavirus outbreak over", he added.
The outbreak, which infected 13 people and killed three, involved the Andes virus, a rare hantavirus strain.
The cruise ship MV Hondius had set off from Argentina on 1 April.
The WHO previously said the first two cases had "travelled through Argentina, Chile and Uruguay on a bird-watching trip which included visits to sites where the species of rat known to carry the virus was present".

As of 2 July, a total of 13 cases, including three deaths, have been notified (case fatality ratio 23%). Twelve cases have been laboratory-confirmed for ANDV infection, and one is a probable case. All confirmed cases are among individuals who travelled onboard the M/V Hondius. Among the ten cases admitted to hospitals, eight have recovered and have been discharged, while two are still undergoing medical treatment. All identified contacts have completed the 42 day follow-up period by local health authorities in line with WHO guidance.

Currently available information suggests that infection of initial cases was likely acquired on land prior to embarkation, although the exact source and route of exposure remain undetermined, with subsequent human-to-human transmission occurring aboard the vessel. Investigations remain underway to establish the circumstances and source of the outbreak, including genomic sequencing of ANDV samples from surveillance cases in Chile and Argentina, and will be published as soon as these are available.

Based on the available information and the existing observations of the current outbreak, limited human-to-human transmission of ANDV is known to occur. However, no large-scale human-to-human outbreaks have been observed historically.[1] ANDV circulates in specific species of rodents in the Americas, and there have been many sporadic cases reported in Argentina and Chile that have not led to onward transmission.[2] Clusters of human cases have been reported in multiple past outbreaks and have been typically associated with close and prolonged interactions, often in shared indoor environments such as households. The largest reported outbreak of ANDV was reported in Argentina in 2018-2019,2 where high viral titres in combination with attendance at large social gatherings or extensive contacts among people were associated with higher transmission. While the available evidence suggests that there are multiple modes of transmission that occur with ANDV, the probability of onward transmission between humans remains low.

The US Navy is searching for a missing aviator after a military helicopter made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea on Wednesday, the US military said.

US Central Command said there was no indication that hostile action had caused the incident involving the MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter.

One of the helicopter's four crew members remains missing, while the other three were rescued and are in stable condition aboard the USS George HW Bush.

The aircraft carrier was deployed to the region during the war with Iran.

The cause of the incident is under investigation, the US military said.

Iceland killed two endangered fin whales earlier this week; they were the first two whales killed in Icelandic waters since 2023.

The killing resumed this week after a two-year hiatus, taken partly because the industry wasn’t deemed profitable enough due to a lack of demand.

The two whales were killed by Hvaluf hf., which is the only whaling company in Iceland, run by billionaire Kristján Loftsson, who’s been described as the “last hunter of fin whales in Europe.” This isn’t some ancient tradition the government is upholding, they’re simply allowing one billionaire to burn money by killing fin whales.

Fin whales are the second largest animal on earth and officially classified as vulnerable to extinction. They’re 80 feet long and can weigh as much as 180,000 pounds. Although Norway and Japan also allow commercial whale killing, only Iceland permits the killing of fin whales. The country’s main market for fin whale meat is Japan, though they also market whale meat to visiting tourists.

In 2024, when Iceland’s government expected to allow 129 fin whales to be hunted, FoA said “Any ethical person would cancel a visit to Iceland and forget about traveling there or buying Icelandic products until their foolish leaders commit to a total, permanent ban.”

Now, they’re going through allowing 150 to be hunted, and FoA is echoing the same sentiment.

A fighter jet crashed into a mountain Saturday afternoon in Yakima County, Washington, sparking a wildfire, local officials said.

The crash occurred at about noon near Rimrock Lake in Washington state. The pilot sustained minor injuries after ejecting from the plane and was transported to the hospital, the Yakima County Sheriff's Office said.

The crash sparked a fire in the area, prompting the evacuation of campers as firefighters worked to suppress it, officials said.

The U.S. Marine Corps told CBS affiliate KIRO-TV in a statement that the crashed jet was an F/A-18 Hornet "assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing."

The jet "experienced a non-fatal aviation mishap while conducting routine training approximately 55 miles southeast of Seattle, Washington," the statement read.

In a stunning court ruling, the High Court decided that Dr Zaliha Mustafa acted illegally in removing liquid nicotine from the Poisons List, saying the delisting was mainly based on economic reasons and the health minister didn’t consult the Poisons Board.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 — Anti-tobacco groups scored a huge victory today after the High Court ruled that the declassification of liquid nicotine as a scheduled poison was unlawful.

High Court judge Aliza Sulaiman supported two contentions by applicants that the order gazetted by then-Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa on March 31, 2023, to remove liquid and gel nicotine used for e-cigarettes and vape from the Poisons List under the Poisons Act 1952 (Act 366) was irrational, and that this exemption was done without proper or adequate consultation with the Poisons Board.

Justice Aliza described the health minister’s decision to take liquid nicotine out of the Poisons List as being “motivated by primarily economic reasons”, noting that the Ministry of Finance (MOF) had affirmed that this declassification was intended to give effect to taxation on the vape products.

The High Court judge noted that Dr Zaliha didn’t meet the Poisons Board in person and that there was no further discussion after the Board communicated its unanimous decision to the minister in opposing the proposed removal of liquid nicotine from the Poisons List.

The judge said the health minister and the government had treated their “consultation” with the Poisons Board as a “mere formality, resulting in the overwhelming evidence of the dangers posed by electronic cigarettes and vape liquids and the increased likelihood of vapes leading to nicotine addiction on the part of children being ignored.”

Justice Aliza ruled there was no need to consider the constitutionality of Section 6 of Act 366 in the circumstances. Applicants had argued that the provision was unconstitutional because it appeared to allow amendments to parliamentary Acts without parliamentary scrutiny.

The applicants – the Malaysian Council for Tobacco Control (MCTC), the Malaysian Green Lung Association (MGLA), and Voice of the Children (VoC) – did not seek costs. Their counsel, K. Shanmuga, told the High Court that his clients were non-governmental organisations (NGOs) who brought the case as a matter of public interest. The Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) was amicus curiae in the case.

As such, the High Court pronounced no order for costs.

Shanmuga told CodeBlue that the immediate impact of the court decision was that the government must reassess the nicotine and vape issue, and decide what was the most effective way to curb the problem.

“The decision also has, I believe, far reaching implications. It shows that decisions regarding health and medical safety should not be determined solely for economic reasons,” he said.

When asked if the court ruling meant that liquid nicotine must now be reinserted into the Poisons List, Shamuga replied: “In a way; the judge has said its removal is unlawful.”

The potential ramifications of today’s court decision are significant, as the government may be forced to stop imposing or collecting tax on vape liquids containing nicotine, besides prohibiting the sale of such products if they are now considered to be a scheduled poison.

In a brief response, MCTC chairman Prof Dr M. Murallitharan told CodeBlue that his organisation would push the government to relist liquid nicotine under the Poisons List.

Ikeda Onsen Honkan in the town of Ikeda suspended operations on April 3 after struggling to secure enough heavy oil to heat its waters, NHK reported. JOHOR BARU: A technician was sentenced to 73 years' jail and 24 strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to 10 charges of baby trafficking, sexual assault of a child and producing child sexual abuse material.

The judges ordered that the prison terms run concurrently from his arrest on July 18 last year, meaning he will serve 18 years in total.

For the baby trafficking offences, Imran was sentenced to 15 years' jail each for three charges of trafficking two five-day-old baby girls and a seven-month-old baby boy for the purpose of exploitation in unlawful activities.

All the offences were committed at Taman Melor, Taman Kota Masai and Taman Scientex in Pasir Gudang between 9pm on March 11 and 12pm on Nov 24, 2024.

The charges were framed under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, read with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which provides imprisonment for life or a minimum of five years' jail and liable to whipping upon conviction.

Before Madihah, he was charged with two counts of committing sexual assault against a five-year-old child and with producing child sexual abuse material by recording a video of the victim during the act.

He committed the offence between 10.30am and 11am in a bedroom of a house in Kampung Pasir on April 5, 2024.

The charges were framed under Sections 14(a), 14(b) and 5 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

The judge imposed a total sentence of 10 years' imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane for the offences.

Meanwhile, in another court, he also faced two charges under Sections 14(a) and 5 of the same act for committing sexual assault against two children aged between six and seven years old and producing child sexual abuse material.

He committed the offences around Kampung Pasir Putih, Pasir Gudang at about 11am on the same day.

Meanwhile, Nor Aziati sentenced him to a total of 18 years' imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane for the offences involving the two children.

In mitigation, Imran pleaded for a lighter sentence, saying he has three young children and also supports his ailing parents.

He also expressed remorse for his actions and promised not to repeat the offences.

However, the three judges stressed that the offences committed by the accused were serious, taking into account the trauma suffered by the young victims.

The court also ordered him to undergo rehabilitation counselling in prison and to be placed under police supervision for two years after his release.

Deputy public prosecutors Nur Diyana Zubir, Nor Fadilah Johanuddin and Nur Farah Wahida Shahudin prosecuted while lawyers Mohamed Imran Mohamed Sam and Haziq Ishak acted for Imran.

JOHOR BARU: Federal police are investigating a suspected Johor paedophile over the possible murder of two infants and the disappearance of two other children.

This came following the discovery of digital evidence linked to an international child sexual exploitation network.

Sources said footage recovered from the suspect's digital devices showed sexual abuse of minors, including infants, with one video allegedly showing the sodomy of a child under 18 months.

Two infants, one believed to be about 2-months-old, were believed to have died and their bodies disposed.

Johor police chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said no murder investigation paper had been opened at this stage due to the absence of physical evidence, including a body.

Two other children linked to the suspect were believed to be missing.

The scale and severity of the case led to the early deployment of advanced digital forensic tools recently supplied to Bukit Aman by the Australian Police Force, part of a longstanding cooperation.

In a Facebook post by the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID), it was revealed that four Digital Triage Kits handed over by Australia in November last year, named the "Green Butterfly Sheet", were in memory of two children who had died and two others still missing in the Johor paedophilia case.

The suspect, a 29-year-old technician with a spouse and children, was initially arrested in July last year on suspicion of raping, sodomising and sexually assaulting five children.

Subsequent police investigations revealed he had allegedly exploited up to 15 victims, most of them foreigners.

He was charged with seven counts under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and three charges under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007.

Terdahulu, Nevina mencadangkan tiada jaminan ditawarkan kepada kedua-dua tertuduh kerana cubaan membunuh adalah kesalahan berat.

Bharathi bagaimanapun memohon jaminan dengan alasan wanita itu memiliki dua anak autistik (non verbal autism) yang berusia 17 dan 21 tahun yang memerlukan penjagaan.

Bharati juga menyatakan tiada alasan bagi wanita berkenaan melarikan diri atau menghilangkan diri kerana memiliki anak orang kurang upaya (OKU) serta mohon jaminan dengan syarat tambahan ditetapkan mahkamah.

Suami tertuduh yang bekerja di sebuah gudang di Changi, Singapura dan berpendapatan SG2,500 (RM7,900) dinyatakan hanya pulang bekerja pada waktu malam.

Bharathi juga menyatakan Kamala Sarna turut memiliki seorang anak serta isterinya berusia 38 tahun bekerja sebagai juru rawat di sebuah hospital swasta dengan pendapatan RM7,000 sebulan.

Hakim Mahkamah Sesyen Johor Bahru, Mohd Zamir Suhaimee membenarkan jaminan RM20,000 dengan dua penjamin bagi setiap tertuduh, menyerahkan pasport kepada mahkamah dan memerintahkan tertuduh melaporkan diri di balai polis berhampiran.

Tertuduh juga dilarang mengganggu mangsa atau saksi pendakwaan.

Beliau juga menetapkan 3 Februari depan sebagai tarikh sebutan semula kes sementara menunggu

penyerahan dokumen.

Siasatan lanjut mendapati isteri mangsa membenarkan teman lelakinya masuk ke dalam rumah semasa mangsa sedang tidur dan memegang kaki mangsa supaya teman lelakinya dapat menekup muka mangsa sehingga menyebabkan sesak nafas.

Hasil siasatan juga mendapati dalam tempoh kira-kira seminggu sebelum kejadian, isteri mangsa kerap bertanyakan mengenai jumlah wang dan syarikat insurans yang dicarumkan mangsa.

In Kuching’s Tabuan Desa, small fire leads firefighters to find makeshift altar, pentagrams suggesting occult purposes

KUCHING (Dec 5): A house in Tabuan Desa here nearly caught fire when a table combusted into flames.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) responded to a distress call at 6.11am, dispatching firefighters from Tabuan Jaya fire station to the scene.

“The fire only involved the table and did not involve the whole structure of the house,” Bomba said in a statement.

Based on Bomba’s handout photos, the burnt table was near a larger table believed to have been turned into a makeshift altar, suggesting that it was used for occult purposes.

This was evident from the discovery of several pentagrams drawn on the floor as well as the wall near the alleged altar.

The operation ended at 6.37am.

JOHOR BARU: Police have not ruled out that the children’s online game Roblox may have influenced the slashing of a six-year-old boy in Batu Pahat.

Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the incident occurred on Monday (Oct 27) at Kampung Parit Nipah Laut in Parit Raja.

He said the victim was found with slash wounds on his neck and stab injuries on his body.

“Preliminary investigations found that the victim’s nine year old elder brother had been playing Roblox extensively and had collected about one million points,” he said.

“The boy’s mobile phone was later damaged by his younger brother, which allegedly caused the points to be lost,” added Comm Ab Rahaman.

He then said that the suspect may have experienced hallucinations at night related to the game, during which he claimed he was told to harm his family.

Comm Ab Rahaman said this at a press conference after the Johor police monthly assembly at the state police headquarters on Wednesday (Oct 29).

He said the boy then took a knife from the house and attacked his brother.

“The victim was found with slash and stab injuries. He is receiving treatment at Batu Pahat Hospital and is in stable condition,” he added.

Comm Ab Rahaman said the boys’ parents, both in their 40s, have been arrested to assist investigations.

“Both parents were detained as we believe they have knowledge of the incident,” he said.

“They have been remanded until Thursday (October 30),” he added.

He said police have also questioned other family members, including their 15-year-old sister.

“Investigations are still in the early stages, and we have yet to record the victim’s statement as he has not fully recovered,” he said.

Comm Ab Rahaman said both the victim and his elder brother are under the Social Welfare Department’s supervision.

“They are under JKM’s care and cannot be detained like criminal suspects,” he said.

He added that police have referred the investigation papers to the Johor State Legal Adviser’s Office for further action.

“At this point, our investigation focuses on the family and determining the actual cause of the incident,” he said.

The victim’s mother lodged a police report on Monday.

She stated that her youngest child had suffered injuries to the neck and added that she made the discovery just after waking up at around 5.30am at their home

Navy loses two aircraft from USS Nimitz aircraft carrier within 30 minutes

WASHINGTON (AP) — A fighter jet and a helicopter based off the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz both crashed into the South China Sea within 30 minutes of each other on Sunday afternoon, the Navy’s Pacific Fleet said.

The three crew members of the MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter were rescued, and the two aviators in the F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet ejected and were recovered safely, and all five “are safe and in stable condition,” the fleet said in a statement.

The causes of the two crashes were under investigation, the statement said.

The USS Nimitz is returning to its home port in Naval Base Kitsap in Washington state after having been deployed to the Middle East for most of the summer as part of the U.S. response to attacks by Yemen’s Houthi rebels on commercial shipping. The carrier is on its final deployment before decommissioning.

Another aircraft carrier, the USS Harry S. Truman, suffered a series of mishaps in recent months while deployed to the Middle East.
