Vietnam’s low-cost carrier Vietjet has stopped operating its two COMAC C909 aircraft after a six-month lease agreement expired on 18 October. The lack of renewal fo the agreement will be a setback to China’s push to establish its home-grown aircraft in Southeast Asia’s competitive aviation market.

The lease, which started in April this year, days after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Hanoi, was widely seen as a diplomatic gesture to strengthen economic and strategic ties between the two neighbours.

But the aircraft’s departure marks an abrupt end to what had been billed as a milestone in China’s commercial aerospace diplomacy.

Hong Kong arrests 2 over suspected US$7 million water scam
The incident is raising public concern about how Hong Kong authorities had missed telltale signs of a scam amounting to nearly US$7 million.

HONG KONG: Hong Kong police said on Aug 18 they have arrested two people over a suspected scam involving a water supplier that may have cheated the government in a contract worth nearly US$7 million.

A company named Xin Ding Xin won a deal in June to provide 1.88 million bottles of water which would go into dispensers in some government offices - the first time such a contract went to a Chinese brand, according to local media.

But police said the firm was found to have relied on false documents during the tender process, claiming to source its water from another mainland Chinese supplier when in fact they had no business ties.

However, Proton has not confirmed final specifications, and it remains to be seen how this will be implemented in the production model.

To add another twist, a separate Saga MC3 facelift — based on the current-gen car — is also in the pipeline. This suggests that Proton could offer two Sagas side-by-side in the near future: one as a budget-friendly upgrade, and the other as a more tech-forward variant for the modern buyer.

Seems like with CKD and CBU tax changes increase one round price, Proton will add another round of price increase to Proton Saga if they plan to keep the old car as facelift together with new car with ADAS and new engine.

“Working conditions were extremely degrading. Five settlements were kept by BYD, JinJiang and Tecmonta. Some workers slept on beds without mattresses and had their personal belongings alongside with their food,” the prosecutors’ office said. “There were few bathrooms, which were not gender-assigned. In one of the settlements, there was one toilet for 31 people, forcing workers to wake up at 4 a.m. for their personal hygiene before their work.”

Some Substandard Steel Used in Now Collapsed State Audit Office Building in Bangkok, Confirms Thai Industrial Standards Institute

Bangkok, March 31, 2025 – Test results from 28 steel samples recovered from the wreckage of the collapsed State Audit Office (SAO) building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district have revealed that two failed to meet required standards, according to Nonthichai Likitaporn, director of the Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI)’s Standards Division 1.

Nonthichai’s announcement has intensified scrutiny on Xin Ke Yuan Steel Co., Ltd., previously identified as the supplier of the deformed steel bars used in the building’s construction. Earlier this year, in January 2025, the Ministry of Industry charged Xin Ke Yuan Steel with producing substandard steel following an inspection of its factory in Ban Khai, Rayong.

“We’ve tested 28 samples so far, and two did not meet the standards set by TISI,” Nonthichai said during a press briefing on Monday. “This is a preliminary finding, and we will be collecting additional samples from the site to conduct a more comprehensive analysis.”

Two Chinese nationals were escorted off a Bondi Beach tour bus after beachgoers complained about their repeated photographing of women and schoolgirls in bikinis, a court heard.

A pair of Chinese tourists, who “previously had not been exposed to beach culture”, were arrested on-board their tour bus at Bondi Beach, after repeatedly photographing bikini clad women.

Radiologist Yong Yang and mechanical engineer Qiang Chen, from Beijing, appeared before Waverley Local Court after each pleading guilty to one count of behave in an offensive manner near a public place.

The pair, both aged 56, were due to fly back home but had their return flights delayed after being arrested on Bondi Beach last week.

MANILA, Philippines — Dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo was spotted at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Malaysia, based on a photo released by the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) on Thursday.

Although it is unclear when the image was taken, PAOCC Undersecretary Gilbert Cruz said they received an image from a concerned citizen who saw Guo arrive in Kuala Lumpur.

An ex-mayor accused of spying for China and having ties with criminal syndicates has fled the Philippines, stirring fury.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said Wednesday that "heads will roll" after officials admitted Alice Guo had left the country undetected one month ago and travelled to Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

Mr Marcos said her departure "laid bare the corruption that undermines our justice system and erodes the people's trust".

Ms Guo has been out of public view since July when a Senate panel investigating her alleged links to scam centres and online casinos ordered her arrest for refusing to testify in its enquiry.

She is accused of allowing human trafficking syndicates and scam centres to operate in her town by masquerading as online casinos.

Senators have also accused her of being an operative or spy for China, citing her "opaque" answers to questions about her Chinese parentage.

Police have filed criminal complaints against her, while the Philippines' anti-graft body recently dismissed her from office citing "grave misconduct".

Petrol bomb thrown at KK Mart in Kuching

PETALING JAYA: A petrol bomb was thrown at a KK Mart outlet in Kuching yesterday, the third such attack on the convenience store chain in a week.

Kuching police chief Ahsmon Bajah said the attack was reported by a 25-year-old man who worked at the store’s Jalan Satok branch.

“The complainant said that a glass bottle filled with kerosene was thrown at some boxes placed on the five-foot-way of the shop,” he said in a statement.

KK Mart branches in Bidor, Perak, and in Kuantan, Pahang, were attacked with petrol bombs last week, leading to the sultans of both states issuing strongly worded statements.

The petrol bomb thrown at the shop in Bidor on March 26 failed to explode. The attack in Kuantan on March 29 set several items on fire but was immediately extinguished by KK Mart workers.

KK Mart has been mired in controversy since March 13 after socks with the word “Allah” were discovered at its Bandar Sunway outlet, sparking calls by Umno Youth for a national boycott of the chain.

KK Mart’s founder and a director have since been charged with intentionally wounding the religious feelings of Muslims by selling the socks, while three officers of the vendor, Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd, were charged with abetment. All claimed trial.
