How can a fresh graduate get into the XR industry?

Hi, all! I made this topic because I’ve been searching everywhere if maybe people have discussed this kind of topic before but I don’t think people have..

So I am a fresh graduate of Computer Science majoring in Multimedia Computing, but eventhough there is a ‘computer science’ in the title, we’re not really proficient in typical CS graduates skillsets, such as PHP, SQL, MYSQL, MariaDB, .NET, fullstack programming, databases, servers, etc. Instead, we focus on multimedia computing which mainly consists of game programming, game design, virtual reality, 3D development and a little bit of UI/UX.

But what I am really interested in is the XR industry which to people not familiar with XR, you might have heard about Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. And that is what I chose for my Final Year Project. We never actually learned about AR in university but it is actually simple enough to self-learn.

However, the real problem arise after I graduated. During my study, and till now actually, I keep hearing people say that the XR industry has a bright future and graduates that have the necessary skills will immediately get hired. They talk about all those statistics, 1400% demand growth and all that. But sadly, that is not the case.. I have applied to almost every job ads that has the keyword ‘Unity’, ‘VR’, ‘AR’, but none of them reached back to me 😞 I understand that they want experienced candidates only (yes, they mentioned that in the job advertisement), but I don’t know what else I can do to even have a chance to get into this industry 😩 and what makes it harder is that there’s not even that much openings for XR jobs 😅

How do I even start gaining those years of experiences needed in order to land a job in XR? Is it because I am a Malay? Do chinese companies really avoid hiring malay employees? Or is it because I’m a woman? This is so confusing to me 😅 I will admit that I’m not really proficient at using Unity, C# or any of the APIs or SDKs, because believe it or not, we learned all of that ourselves, for our FYP. With youtube being my main source in searching for tutorials. But that’s more the reason why I wanna get a job because youtube tutorials aren’t really helping, my FYP still has a lot of bugs because I don’t know how to fix it 😅

I am genuinely asking this because I am still highly interested in XR and still wishes to pursue this line of career. I just need some kind of insight from people who have experienced this before. Help me 🙏🏻 Tell me how I can be a better candidate for a career in the XR industry.

Hello! Anyone here applied for Petronas GEES 2021 intake? They opened the application near the end of January and now its almost the end of February. I’m making this topic just to ask if anybody reading this also applied? And has anybody heard back from Petronas?

Just want to make sure ☹️ If they have released the namelist for the participants, then at least I can stop waiting 😞
