KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has ordered former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to pay RM1.35mil in damages for defaming DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng over Al-Bukhary Foundation's tax exemption.

High Court Judicial Commissioner Roz Mawar Rozain made the ruling after finding that Lim had proven his case against the Bersatu president.

Lim claimed that the allegedly defamatory statements implied that he had abused his position and power by authorising or directing the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) to impose taxes and penalties on the charitable foundation, when it should not have been taxed.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians can now get a clearer picture of the minimum amount of money they would need each month to afford a decent living in each district nationwide.

The Basic Expenses for Decent Living or Perbelanjaan Asas Kehidupan Wajar (PAKW) is a newly created cost of living index calculated based on 419 items covering food and clothing to utilities and transportation.

“The PAKW measures the amount of spending required by a household to lead a decent life that meets their needs and wants, and allows participation in society,” Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin told a recent media briefing on the index.

The PAKW which was developed by the Statistics Department was launched on Saturday (Nov 2) by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The index comes with an online cost of living calculator known as MyPAKW which the public can access at https://mypakw.dosm.gov.my.

The calculator can also be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play by searching for the term MyPAKW.

KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd has filed a lawsuit against the local company supplier Xin Jian Chang Sdn Bhd and its director Soh Chin Huat which supplied the socks bearing the Allah inscription.

The cumulative claims in the lawsuit for brand damage and an aborted listing on the stock exchange amount to no less than RM38 million.

Police arrested a mechanic who is believed to have vandalised two cars belonging to Pakatan Harapan’s Indera Kayangan state assemblyperson, Gan Ay Ling, resulting in a cracked windshield and dent in the front fender.

Kangar district police chief Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the 36-year-old man was arrested at a motorcycle workshop where he works about 4pm yesterday.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has yet to decide on the representation by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to drop his three other charges of money laundering involving SRC International Sdn Bhd funds amounting to RM27mil.

During a case management today (March 12), deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul told High Court Judge K. Muniandy that the representation is still undecided.

Najib’s lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah then asked his client to be discharged not amounting to acquittal (DNAA) as there was no decision on the representation which was filed last August.

"We ask the court to exercise its discretion to grant a DNAA, then the prosecution can charge again (if they want to),” he said, Bernama reported.

To this, Mohd Ashrof replied: "I’m not asking for withdrawal... we proceed with the trial... at least 20 to 25 witnesses will be called to testify in the case, which is scheduled in September,” he said and requested three months to prepare witness statements.

However, the judge only allowed two months for the prosecution to prepare witness statements.

"The documents must be submitted before May 20. The next case management is on May 27,” said the judge who had previously set Sept 17, 18, 19, 23 and 24 for trial.

During previous proceedings in January, Judge Muniandy ordered that the case must proceed with trial as the accused was charged in 2019 and if the prosecution was unable to go ahead with their case on that day (Sept 17), the defence is at liberty to file for a DNAA or fully acquitted.

On Feb 3, 2019, the former prime minister claimed trial to three charges of money laundering by accepting proceeds from unlawful activities amounting to RM27mil through his three AmPrivate Banking accounts at AmIslamic Bank Berhad, AmBank Group Building in Jalan Raja Chulan here on July 8, 2014, under Section 4 (1) (a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001.

He faces a maximum fine of RM5mil or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, if convicted.

The former Pekan MP is currently serving a 12-year term in Kajang Prison for the misappropriation of RM42mil in the SRC International funds case.

Najib filed a petition for a royal pardon on Sept 2, 2022, and on Jan 29, the Pardons Board reduced his jail term from 12 years to six years and the fine was cut to RM50mil from RM210mil.
