LED lighting represents the latest development in the lighting industry. The energy efficiency and considerable lifespan of LED technology holds all the potential for changing the way organizations brighten their facilities by reducing the cost of electricity and overall energy use.

What Is LED lighting?
LED stands for light emitting diode. An LED is a semiconductor device, generating light through a process called electroluminescence. When you pass an electric current through semiconductor material, it emits visible light. As such, an LED stands in exact contrast to a photovoltaic cell, which is the cell used in solar arrays to convert visible light into electricity.

We’ve known about the technology behind LEDs for years. Contributing to the development of solid-state transistors, LED technology helped to land an astronaut on the moon and enable the creation of portable AM radios!

In the early 60s, a young scientist working for General Electric developed the first LEDs. Companies first used them as indicator lights for circuit boards, and they became known for their durability and energy efficiency. Many municipalities used the second generation of LEDs, which became available in the 80s and 90s, as replacements for the traditional incandescent bulb in streetlights. Some people began to experiment with using them as a replacement for fluorescent lights in outdoor signs.

iPhone 13: what we want to see

We don't know much for certain about Apple's iPhone 13, so we've put together a list of things we'd love to see the company introduce for its next-gen device. Some of these will match with what you've read about above, and others are just things we want to see Apple do.
1. A big camera upgrade

The iPhone 12 series brought some slight camera tweaks to the family of handsets, but it wasn't a significant overhaul that many were hoping for.

Expect to see an improved camera in 2021, and we're hoping for a big one that can mean the company can hold onto its footing in making some of the very best shooters on the market.

Sadly, based on the leaks available at the time of writing we're not expecting anything too major on the camera front - it looks like we'll be waiting until 2022 for that.
2. Improved battery life

The iPhone 12 range doesn't have much better battery life than the iPhone 11 series, so we'd like to see Apple put more of a focus on battery life in the future.

Nowhere is this more true than on the iPhone 12 mini, which has the worst battery life of the entire family. It's okay enough to cope with on a day to day basis, but we'd like to see Apple commit to improving battery life further.
3. An iPhone 13 mini

This may seem like an obvious one, but we really like the iPhone 12 mini and we'd like to see it become a mainstay of the iPhone family.

Smaller handsets that are as capable as the flagship alternative are few and far between in 2020, so we'd like to see the company commit to this new size of handset again for the iPhone 13.

At the time of writing this is looking likely - though possibly at the expense of an iPhone SE 3.
4. A price drop

This is unlikely to be possible for the iPhone 13, but with the price of the iPhone 12 series increasing over the iPhone 11 we'd like to see the company drop its prices again in 2021.

With a rumor suggesting the company will only be using 5G technology relevant to whatever market you live in, that may allow Apple to drop the price lower than it had done before.
5. The death of 64GB iPhones

The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 are both available with 64GB of storage, and we believe that isn't enough room on a smartphone in 2021. Some will be able to handle that, but if you want to make the most of your device you'll likely find it will clog up after a few years of usage.

We'd like to see Apple introduce 128GB as the minimum device size in the next model, and hopefully bring the price of the larger storage variants down to a more affordable level.
6. A high refresh rate display

Rumored for the iPhone 12, a high refresh rate display will be another solid screen upgrade that we'd love to see included on the iPhone to keep it competitive with other smartphones on the market.

It's the sort of upgrade you don't know you want until you've used a phone with the technology included, but it's something that would make a noticeable difference to the iPhone experience.
7. A better option for chargers

The iPhone 12 was the moment Apple decided to drop chargers in the box. According to Apple, that's an initiative it believes will save on ewaste and while that may be true it isn't the most user friendly way of doing so.

We'd like to see the company come up with an alternative way to offer chargers to those who want them, while also not including them in the box by default.

Perhaps each iPhone could come with a charger coupon that you can cash in if you're in need of a charger but it strongly discourages you from doing so if you already have a way to charge your phone?

64GB or 32GB of RAM MAC BOOK PRO NEXT GEN

The much-anticipated 2021 MacBook Pro models will be limited to a maximum of 32GB of data, according to an unconfirmed report. But the same source indicates that the upcoming macOS notebooks will have speedy SD slots and backlit TouchID sensors.

These reports cover the 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro models that are expected before the end of 2021.
2021 MacBook Pro models will have more RAM

The next-generation MacBook Pro will top out at 32GB of RAM, according to a YouTube video released Monday by tipster Luke Miani. When talking about the upcoming models, he said, “I’m extremely doubtful that it would receive 64 gigabytes of RAM as an upgrade. Everything that I’ve seen is saying 16 and 32.”

That goes against a report by from Bloomberg. In it, Mark Gurman predicted that the 2021 MacBook Pro will be configurable with up to 64GB of RAM. Gurman has a stronger record for reliability than Miani.

The model, no matter the screen size, is expected to run an Apple M-series processor. The last Intel-based MacBooks still offered by Apple can have up to 64GB of RAM. But the first M1-based models released in 2020 top out at 16GB. So if the second-gen M-series can sport 32GB it would still be an upgrade. Of sorts.
More enhancements

In his video on Monday, Miani says he’s been told that the SD card build into the 2021 MacBook Pro will support UHS-II. This isn’t a new standard — it’s been around since 2014 — but its support for 312 MBps transfer speeds will surely be welcome.

And Miani predicts the upcoming macOS laptops will have a backlit TouchID scanner.

Previous unconfirmed reports have indicated that the next-generation models will get a mini-LED screen like the latest iPad Pro. Plus an HDMI port and a restored MagSafe charger. But the 16-inch and 14-inch MacBook Pro might not be out until September.

A Company Just Released 150K Genetically Modified Mosquitoes in the United States

Genetically modified mosquitoes were just released in the US for the first time, thanks to a biotech firm funded by Bill Gates.

The Bill Gates-backed biotech firm Oxitec is going ahead with plans to release hundreds of millions of gene-altered mosquitos in Florida in order to test an experimental new form of population control, the company confirmed in a press release. The initial batch of mosquitoes was released this week.

The controversial project, conducted as part of a partnership between the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District (FKMCD) and Oxitec, will see six locations in the region host Oxitec’s gene-hacked male Aedes aegypti mosquitos over the next few months.

Oxitec — which announced a collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2018 — says the new tests could help to greatly reduce populations of the mosquito breed, which is responsible for spreading diseases such as dengue and malaria.

As Oxitec emphasizes in its press statement, the company's mosquitos are male and, therefore, do not bite.

Instead, they are intended to reduce the number of potentially disease-transmitting female Aedes aegypti by introducing a self-limiting gene that sees offspring die before reaching adulthood.

The firm says the Aedes aegypti accounts for only 4 percent of the mosquito population in the Florida Keys, but is responsible for almost all disease transmission. The company also states that community support for the project is "high."
Controversy amid global plans to gene-hack mosquitos

Still, the method is controversial due to the fact that a genetically altered species is being released into an ecosystem with potentially unknown consequences. Critics have also pointed to the fact that this may open doors for firms to use gene-altered invasive species for other uncontrolled projects.

Oxitec faced a backlash in August 2020, when it originally released its Florida Keys plans. In a press statement at the time, Dana Perls, the food and technology Program Manager at Friends of the Earth, said that "the release of genetically engineered mosquitoes will needlessly put Floridians, the environment and endangered species at risk in the midst of a pandemic."

The Oxitec technology has already been tested in São Paulo, Brazil, where after 13 weeks, it suppressed up to 95 percent of the mosquito species.

Oxitec's isn't the only method for gene-altering mosquitos to curb their populations — this month, it was announced that researchers from Imperial College London have successfully altered the gut genes of mosquitos to spread antimalarial genes to their offspring. The same team had previously used the gene-editing tool CRISPR to eradicate a population of Anopheles gambiae in a lab.

The scientific community, and firms such as Oxitec, aim to tackle the problem of mosquito-borne diseases, which according to the World Mosquito Program, kill up to one million people per year.

The cost OF depression vs. the cost FOR depression

The government allocated RM 25 billion for health care in the 2017 budget.

According to WHO, Malaysia dedicates 1.5 % of the health care budget on mental health, or approximately RM 375 million. This RM 375 million would be for mental health care in general.

That is far from sufficient. According to US researchers, the cost of depression in the US is USD 210 billion and only 40% of that is spent on treatment. The bulk of the cost is due to direct and indirect cost of related illnesses, loss of workplace productivity, and the economic costs associated with suicide directly linked to depression.

The prevalence of depression in the US is approximately the same as in Malaysia: 10% of the population.

Since there is a lack of specific data for the cost of depression in Malaysia, let’s extrapolate from the US data. It will work out to be about RM 1.9 billion a year, accounting for the difference in population size. In fact this might be an underestimate of the cost of depression in Malaysia, given that there are far few resources available, and thus the cost of loss of workplace productivity would be higher in Malaysia.

Caveat aside, this adds up to:

RM 375 million spent on mental health care while depression alone cost the society RM 1.9 billion.

The country is underspending on mental health care, while the people bear the cost of depression.

There is a clear need for better data on the direct and indirect cost of depression in Malaysia, given that 3 million Malaysians suffer from depression. Knowing the cost of depression will inform us on how to improve the mental health care system, improve accessibility of mental health treatment, and ultimately improve the lives of Malaysians living with depression.

Why vaccines are injected in your upper arm muscle

Around the world, more than 17 million sleeves have rolled up for the first COVID-19 vaccinations

Like most adult jabs, this slew of vaccines — including those developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca and Pfizer and BioNTech — are injected into the deltoid: the thick, fleshy muscle of your upper arm.

Despite using a raft of different technologies, COVID-19 vaccines all aim to do the same thing: introduce our immune system to antigens — specific parts of a disease-causing organism which the body uses to identify the invader — to shore up defences against the disease down the track.

By why inject into muscle? Why not in fat just under the skin, straight in a vein, or even up the nose, given that's where we're most likely to encounter the virus?

Nasal vaccines are approved in some countries — such as the US, where some people can get the flu vaccine as a mist sprayed up their nose.

They're not available in Australia, though, and nasal sprays are unlikely to take over as the generally preferred mode of vaccination, at least not soon.

Aside from knowing the safety and effectiveness of injected vaccines, we have large-scale manufacturing and logistics chains set up to make and distribute jabs, especially now COVID-19 vaccination programs are rolling out.

And there are a few good reasons to favour muscle injections over other routes.

The strength of muscle
First up: unlike the layer of fat just under our skin, muscle has an excellent blood supply to help disperse the vaccine, says Joanna Groom, an immunology researcher at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.

Muscle contains and recruits immune cells called dendritic cells, which take up antigens quickly and stick them on their surface, like a flag.

Dendritic cells then migrate to and slip into lymph nodes, "which are like large meeting places for the immune system", Dr Groom says.

There, they encounter T cells and B cells — white blood cells that help defend our body against specific pathogens.

A dendritic cell will present its flag to T and B cells until it finds those that recognise the antigen, then gives them the signal to multiply and, in the case of B cells, start manufacturing antibodies.

Longer — and safer — training sessions
Muscle is a bit of a Goldilocks tissue for doling out vaccines to our immune cells: not too slow, but not too fast either.

As well as providing a ready pool of dendritic cells, muscle acts as a "deposit", where the vaccine can linger a while and be used over a longer period.

This allows for an extended immune system training session, Dr Groom says, which "is thought to result in maximal activation of the immune system".

A vaccine injected directly into the bloodstream, on the other hand, is vulnerable to destruction.

"There are other nonspecific immune cells that can mop up the vaccine and degrade it before it has the opportunity to get to the lymph node," Dr Groom says.

"Then it doesn't have the opportunity for this information to be shared with B and T cells."

As well as being easier to do, injecting vaccines into muscle also has very few severe side effects, and overall invokes less inflammation than a vaccine in a vein.

Most vaccines comprise two parts: the virus-specific antigen portion and a substance that creates a stronger immune response called an adjuvant.

"Adjuvants can sometimes lead to overall inflammation, more so via an intravenous route than when it's in the tissue," Dr Groom says.

Why we need a new circular economy for electronics
If ocean plastic pollution was one of the major environmental challenges we finally woke up to in 2018, the ebb and flow of public opinion could and should turn to electronic waste in 2019. The numbers are astounding — 50 million tonnes of e-waste are produced each year, unchecked it could more than double by 2050, to 120 million tonnes.

It is hard to imagine even 50 million tonnes, yet this is equivalent in weight to all the commercial aircraft we have ever built throughout history; or 4,500 Eiffel Towers, enough to cover an area the size Manhattan — and that’s the equivalent to just one year’s worth of e- waste we create.

This mushrooming stream of screens, cables, chips and motherboards is fuelled by our love of devices, many connected to the internet. They now number more than humans and are projected to grow to 25-50 billion by 2020, reflecting plummeting costs and rising demand.

It is not helped by the fact that only 20% of e-waste, globally is formally recycled. The vast majority, the 80%, is often incinerated or dumped in landfill, many thousands of tonnes also find their way around the world to be pulled apart by hand or burned by the world’s poorest workers. This crude form of urban mining has consequences for people’s wellbeing and creates untold pollution.

We already know what the solutions are, it is a matter of implementing them effectively. Firstly, better e-waste management strategies and green standards can help address this challenge.

By all coming together on the global stage we can create a sustainable industry that generates less waste, where our devices are re-used, as well recycled in novel ways. This also creates new forms of employment, economic activity, education and trade.

Already 67 countries have enacted legislation to deal with the e-waste they generate. Apple, Google, Samsung and many other brands have set ambitious targets for recycling and for the use of recycled and renewable materials.

It is now time we looked at dematerializing the electronics industry. The rise of device-as-a-service business models could be one avenue. This is an extension of current leasing models, where consumers want to access the latest tech, without high up-front costs. With new ownership models, the manufacturer has an incentive to ensure that all resources are used optimally over a device’s lifecycle.

Changes in technology such as cloud computing and the internet of things (IoT) can help with dematerialization. Better product tracking and take-back schemes, which consumers trust, also constitute an important first step to circular global value chains.

It is about changing the direction of the prevailing linear ‘take, make and dispose’ model, as a first step towards the circular economy we want to see in the future. However, this requires bold solutions, expertise, incentives and policies today.

Entrepreneurs, investors, academics, business and labour leaders and lawmakers will all be needed to make the circular economy work. Innovative business and reverse supply chain models, circular designs, safety for e-waste collectors, ways of formalizing and empowering informal e-waste workers, are all part of the picture. Action is needed now.

We don’t want precious minerals and metals to be the new plastic. It’s not pollution, it’s not waste. It’s a vital resource we’re only just starting to value in full.

Need for circular economy models: longer-lasting electronics benefit environment, climate and circular economy

Extending the lifetime and delaying obsolescence of electronics can significantly reduce their environmental and climate impacts and contribute to meeting the European Union’s (EU) environment, climate and circular economy objectives. According to a European Environment Agency (EEA) briefing, smartphones, televisions, washing machines and vacuum cleaners all are used on average for shorter periods than both their designed and desired lifetimes.

The EEA briefing ‘Europe’s consumption in a circular economy: the benefits of longer-lasting electronics’ analyses the opportunities to reduce environmental and climate impacts from electronics.

Circular economy business models — including circular design, product as a service, re-use and recycling — need to be developed to retain longer the value of electronics. To improve the ‘circularity’ of electronic products, the EEA briefing highlights the need for strengthening products’ eco-design requirements and improving their repair, disposal and re-manufacturing potentials.

Over 20 kg of electrical and electronic products are put on the market on average per person in the EU every year, including large household appliances such as washing machines, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators and freezers, as well as electronics and gadgets such as computers, TVs and mobile phones;
Case studies of four different electronic product groups show all have average actual lifetimes that are at least 2.3 years shorter than either their designed or desired lifetimes. There is potential for significant increases in actual lifetime use of these products;
Extending the lifetime and delaying obsolescence of electronics can significantly reduce impacts and contribute to meeting EU environment, climate and circularity objectives. The enabling and scaling-up of circular business models supported by the development and implementation of effective measures — eco-design, energy labeling, green public procurement (GPP) and extended producer responsibility (EPR) — can support this.
