Shellac is a natural resin that comes from tiny insects harvested off tree branches in India. Indians have valued the bug for 3,000 years for its versatility. Once processed and melted, shellac can be used as a powerful red dye, a glossy wood finisher, and a shiny coating to citrus fruit and candies such as jelly beans, Whoppers, and Junior Mints. But the farmers who have depended on these miniature bugs for generations say their crops are at risk.

Origin of Boycott

Boycott

QUOTE

The word boycott entered the English language during the Irish "Land War" and derives from Captain Charles Boycott, the land agent of an absentee landlord, Lord Erne, who lived in County Mayo, Ireland. Captain Boycott was the target of social ostracism organized by the Irish Land League in 1880. As harvests had been poor that year, Lord Erne offered his tenants a ten percent reduction in their rents. In September of that year, protesting tenants demanded a twenty-five percent reduction, which Lord Erne refused. Boycott then attempted to evict eleven tenants from the land. Charles Stewart Parnell, the Irish leader, proposed that when dealing with tenants who take farms where another tenant was evicted, rather than resorting to violence, everyone in the locality should shun them. While Parnell's speech did not refer to land agents or landlords, the tactic was first applied to Boycott when the alarm was raised about the evictions. Despite the short-term economic hardship to those undertaking this action, Boycott soon found himself isolated – his workers stopped work in the fields and stables, as well as in his house. Local businessmen stopped trading with him, and the local postman refused to deliver mail.[2]

The concerted action taken against him meant that Boycott was unable to hire anyone to harvest his crops in his charge.[3] After the harvest, the "boycott" was successfully continued and soon the new word was everywhere. The New-York Tribune reporter, James Redpath, first wrote of the boycott in the international press. The Irish author, George Moore, reported: 'Like a comet the verb 'boycott' appeared.'[4] It was used by The Times in November 1880 as a term for organized isolation. According to an account in the book The Fall of Feudalism in Ireland by Michael Davitt, the term was promoted by Fr. John O'Malley of County Mayo to "signify ostracism applied to a landlord or agent like Boycott". The Times first reported on November 20, 1880: "The people of New Pallas have resolved to 'boycott' them and refused to supply them with food or drink." The Daily News wrote on December 13, 1880: "Already the stoutest-hearted are yielding on every side to the dread of being 'Boycotted'." By January of the following year, the word was being used figuratively: "Dame Nature arose.... She 'Boycotted' London from Kew to Mile End."[5].

QUOTE

A boycott is an act of nonviolent, voluntary abstention from a product, person, organization, or country as an expression of protest. It is usually for moral, social, political, or environmental reasons. The purpose of a boycott is to inflict some economic loss on the target, or to indicate a moral outrage, usually to try to compel the target to alter an objectionable behavior.

The word is named after Captain Charles Boycott, agent of an absentee landlord in Ireland, against whom the tactic was successfully employed after a suggestion by Irish nationalist leader Charles Stewart Parnell and his Irish Land League in 1880.

Sometimes, a boycott can be a form of consumer activism, sometimes called moral purchasing. When a similar practice is legislated by a national government, it is known as a sanction. Frequently, however, the threat of boycotting a business is an empty threat, with no significant effect on sales.[1]

https://www.jordannews.jo/Section-20/Middle...o-boycott-34815

McDonald’s loses $7 billion due to boycott

NEW YORK — On Wednesday, the CFO of McDonald’s announced that the boycott’s impact on sales in the arab region and the Islamic world has led to financial losses of about $7 billion within hours.

During Wednesday's trading, McDonald's shares plummeted by over 3 percent, heading towards recording its biggest daily loss in five weeks.

The company's stock dropped by 3.37 percent or $9.93 to $284.36 at the time of writing this report, leading to a loss of $6.87 billion for the company.

This came after Borden acknowledged that international sales would gradually decline in the current quarter due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and weak demand in China, Jo24 reported.
Borden said at the Global Consumer and Retail Conference that comparable sales for the first quarter in the company's licensed international developmental markets will be "slightly lower" than the previous three months.

The consecutive losses for the company, which owns the most widespread chain of restaurants globally, are posing challenges amidst ongoing boycott campaigns against it.

Customers in the Arab and Islamic worlds were angered after McDonald's in Israel announced last October that it would provide free meals to Israeli occupation soldiers.

In an attempt to ease this anger, some McDonald's branches in the Arab region announced donations for Gaza relief.

Last month, Chris Kempczinski, President and CEO of McDonald's, warned that "misinformation" in the Middle East and other places harms sales.

The company did not widely meet Wall Street's estimates for fourth-quarter sales in this sector in February, partly due to protests and boycott campaigns against many Western brands due to their pro-Israel stance in its aggression on Gaza for over five months.

Chin Chong Palace

Chin Chong Palace or locally pronounced in Burmese as “Chin Chong Nandaw” stands quietly amidst the lush green yet unattended garden on the elevated ground further behind the bustling Kaba Aye Pagoda road of Yangon. A winding driveway from the Chinese gate decorated with auspicious symbol stuccowork leads visitors up through rows of big trees before reaching this glorious mansion.

This eclectic five stories mansion with the high-rise tired Chinese style dome in the center was built between 1915-1919 for the Chinese business tycoon “Lim Chin Chong”. Lim was born as a first son of the Chinese immigrant, Lim Soo Hean from Amoy in Fujian who came to Rangoon and set up his business in 1860’s. Chin Chong was well educated from the English public school in Rangoon at that time and took over the family rice trading business after the death of his father.
Since then, the business expanded and he ventured into various fields of other businesses including mining, agricultural products trading, oil trading, and steamship transportation running between Rangoon to Penang, Malacca, Santaw and Amoy. At the peak at his career he also owned a horseracing club and was once appointed as a member of Burma Legislative council.

The building of this mansion was truly a construction spectacle to those living Rangoon at that time. When finished, it was proved to be a truly elegant grandeur. The size of the main hall can host a sit-down dinner for a party of 100 people easily. The wood carving work, floor parquet, wrought iron, and stuccowork features an eclectic mix of western and Chinese style. The mural painting on the first floor at the front room featured landscape scenery & architecture in Chinoiserie style. They are the works of Ernest and Dod Proctor, the renown British artist couple at their early days before they became famous.

After the completion of this mansion, Lim Chin Chong’s fate had turned unfavorable. 2 of his steamships sank and caused him to go bankrupt. His death in 1923 was also a mystery that remains unsolved till today. Hypotheses and speculations of his death ranges from typical death caused by illness to suicidal or even rumors had it that he fled away due to involvement of counterfeit money production. As a result, the mansion was declared insolvent in 1924.

Nowadays, Chin Chong Nandaw is owned by the Ministry of Culture and is used by State Fine Arts School. The building is simply in the stage of decay. Only some rooms are utilized as lecture rooms and arts studios.

Women’s empowerment in India

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/readers...e-period-46689/

Women’s empowerment in India, from ancient period to modern time period.

Naturally, when we talk about women’s empowerment in India what we refer that women must need to be aware of their rights like the right to vote, property rights, freedom of movement, their legal rights, and many more, which means, empowering women is making women realize their self-worth, their abilities to determine their own choice and shaping the society where women can enjoy their respect and rights just like other humans. Women’s empowerment is an essential factor that works for the betterment and development of society, community, and country.
When it is to specifying women’s population in the world we get the result of around 50 %. But when we focus on the people of India, it happens to be a disproportionate sex ratio which means the female population is comparatively lower than the male.

Comparatively the western part of the world is very liberal about women’s empowerment but women’s empowerment in India is the least concern of society because of gender biasness. It is believed that the problem with literacy, population, and health issues won’t solve until there’s any solution for the gender biasness so that women can take a free part in building a society and a community where everyone’s rights and demands will be paid attention to.
If we pay more attention to how women’s empowerment in India got momentum throughout the years, from the ancient to the modern period. Over time, Indian society has witnessed many uprises and downfalls when it came to empowering women.

What is women’s empowerment?
Ill-treatment for women has been a ritual for men, for centuries this unjustified treatment is going on, and women are not allowed to have property, they will have no share in their own parents’ properties, and they never enjoyed their rights to vote and there was absolutely no freedom to chose their own way of lifestyle or job and so on.

Now women’s empowerment means exercising their power and their own actions. Which means having control over your own material assets, intellectual resources, and your own ideologies.

Ancient Indian period and women’s empowerment
In ancient Indian culture, women were treated as equal to men, and there was no discrimination on the bases of gender, instead of that women were honored by society, and society at the time considered women as Janani which means mother, even in Hindu scripts women are considered as Devi. They used to enjoy their full basic rights where they were free to receive education, at that time the wives of the rishis could willing to take part in spiritual activities with their husbands, they were also known as the Ardhangini (better half) too. During that period, women got to live equal life just like men used to live. Women in Indian history have gone through two things in their life one is subjection and deliverance. With the passage of time, their positions might have changed but in the Vedic era, they were a complete symbol of protector and caretaker of mortality and ideals.

The accomplishment of Gargi, Maitreyi, Sita, Draupadi, and Alapa turns out to be the most ideal role for women of this era. These women were competitive with men in many fields and also received and enjoyed their rights and equality, there were no restrictions on them, and they possessed great wealth and property. Along with that they even had a very strong say when it came to guiding their offspring.

In the ancient text of the Vedas, the concept of humans is a bedrock for society, in taittiriya Samhita women and men were considered as the two-wheel of a cart. These lessons given by the Vedas to society were good examples of equality between men and women.

Women’s empowerment in India in the medieval period

The integrity among the genders had room in the early Vedic period but somehow in the later Vedic period there was a decline in the integrity and equality among them, especially the position of the women which was equal in the early Vedic period, later had a downward trend in later Vedic period. It is believed that foreign conquest is the main reason for the decline of women’s status in that era. There was an erosion in the Rig-Vedic ideals of fairness and harmony, which deprives women to enjoy their right to study the Vedas, recite Vedic mantras, and practice Vedic rituals. Women were forced to get married and or involve in domestic life and have an indisposable devotion to their husbands. At that time parents were ashamed of the born of a girl child.

There came a time when women have to adopt the ‘pardah’ a veil that covers the body in a way it affects their freedom. This is the reason it gave birth to many other evils in society which made women’s life more difficult to live. There were many restrictions like Sati, Jauhar, and no education for girls, widow re-marriage, child marriage, and many more.

What is sati?
The concept of sati is when a woman’s husband dies then the woman had to sit on the burning fire with her husband and burn herself to death. It is said it was her solemn duty toward her husband. In old Hindu scripts, it was believed that when a woman dies as a sati, the doors of heaven open up for her straight.

What is Jauhar?
In today’s world, if we try to understand what Jauhar is, we get to know that it is just a mass suicide, but in the medieval period, this was a Rajput custom, where the Rajput women sacrificed their lives for their husbands when they were about to lose a battle.

What is child marriage?
Medieval India is well remembered because of many factors but one of them is child marriage.

At that time birth of a girlchild was a matter of shame for the parents, they were considered a burden for the family, so parents used to marry them off as soon as possible. Another reason for child marriage is, it was a belief that grown-up girls were more tend to do scandals, which is why their parents tie the knot at a very tender age and the girls stay at their parent’s home and move out when they hit puberty. At that time men used to think that a woman is nothing more than marriage material, they were treated like material. This is the reason why there was an increasing birth rate, women suffered from very poor health which is also a reason for the increase in high mortality rate in women and babies too.

No access to widow re-marriage
Treating women as the material was common in the medieval period. In the medieval period widows were considered cursed, it was believed that when a woman becomes a widow she inflects depredation and brings ill luck, after being a widow, that woman have to pronounce every comfort of home which was promised by her husband at the marriage, there is no place for widows in any holy or sacred rituals or place. They were not allowed to remarry. There will be no choice given to her so that can live a peaceful life, she always wears faded white clothes and had to eat very specific food which was only eaten by widows.

No education for women.
There is evidence available that in the past women had access to education, but the scenario totally changed in the later Vedic period, the dimension of their education changed and they were taught all the domestic tasks, on the other hand in the Muslim religion they were given classes on fine art. Yet the suffering of women never gets easier in this period of time.

The fight for women’s empowerment in India in the modern period.
Then as time passed society evolved with changes and somehow women got their chance to enjoy their rights and powers but this was not available for every woman in society. At the very beginning of this modern period of women’s empowerment in India, there are many names that come up during the East India Company. They were extraordinarily brave women at that time like Begum Hazrat Mahal, Uda Devi, and Azizun Baial, also one of them is Rani Laxmi Bai of Jhansi.

Gradually this fight for women’s empowerment in India grew strong. There have been social reforms and many men and took participated in them too like Raja Rammohan Roy, Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, Swami Vivekananda, and Swami Dayananda Saraswat. All of them had helped women to receive back their previous status in society.

The origin of this empowerment and its concept of it had come up in the civil rights movements of the USA in 1960. To be more specific about the definition of empowerment it is widely defined as a large individual process of taking control over and responsibility for one’s life and situation also granting them their human rights and social justice.

The status of women in India, through the past few millennia, has changed a lot. The whole 19th century is in one sense said to be the women’s century all over the world. All over the world women’s education became a moot question, which was not a topic of discussion lately but somehow the western world had some influence on women’s empowerment in India.

We have learned about the trend of girls’ education in India, it seems the wave of this has gone up and down through the course of time. In the social condition of the medieval period, there could be no quantitative expansion of female education. But the qualitative excellence was maintained, although in a very limited circle of the aristocracy. This low trend stayed unchanged up to the early 19th century, there was a strong social stigma that women cannot receive education in India.

The activities of the British ruler and missionaries who came from England and other parts of Europe made some changes in the social and cultural life of Indians. The missionaries were in the favor of women’s education and they set up several schools for girls, in Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras. The government’s initiatives were remarkable. The education of girls in India in the 19th century took great hype and opposed against the patriarchal norms which were against their education. Different education committees are recommended for women’s education. In the Education Dispatch of 1854, a huge pressure was built on female education. This resulted in a number of girls’ schools being set up in different parts of India.

Post-independence women’s empowerment in India.
So the post-independent era the movements for women’s empowerment in India slowed down. A lot of women went back to their, homes since there was no need to fight against colonizers. Others were satisfied that the council promised them equality, held out hope for a Uniform Civil Code (Article 44), and gave universal adult franchise which further alleviated their problem. This increase the rate of oppression, discrimination, dowry deaths, unemployment, declining sex ratio, lack of healthcare and infant mortality, etc. There was socio-political unrest all over India. Which resulted in the appointment of CSWI, Committee on the Status of Women in India by the United Nations.

After 30 years of independence and the implementation of the constitution, there was nothing much done for the improvement of women’s empowerment in India. There was negligence in the field of their healthcare, education, employment, and more on. The political and economical participation of women was very low.

The buzzword of human rights has entered our everyday lexicon in contemporary times, from being an endeavor in activism, human rights today is a subject matter of discussion, deliberation, debate, critique, and analysis in the circle of academia, politics, law, and policy-making. Human rights are basic and natural rights that belong to a person by virtue of his being a human being, not by the virtue of his citizenship in any particular country. Human rights ensure equal dignity for all people.

Women’s human rights start with women’s experiences as the starting point with which to view human rights. Feminist analysis and rights advocates say that social, political, economical, and legal structures and processes on basis of gender perspective have a standpoint on women’s lived experiences.

It is not easy to highlight the global effort of the women’s rights movements. Women’s right does not only mean a reformation and reconstruction and recovery of women’s status and their natural life.

Women’s human rights can be explained in two ways one is the general instruments of human rights, which has a principle of no discrimination that is applicable to all which includes women too, the second one refers to the gender-specific provisions in international human rights law. The experience of all forms of violence and discrimination by women arose from the locality it was easy because women never had their basic education so that they can save themselves from discrimination and violence.

Women were denied their right to education because of their gender if they belong to the lower class but at the same time for an upper-class girl it was the possibility of the right to education is lower.

However, the National Education Movement was another factor that was against women’s education. It was a humanist movement too. The humanist outlook led to the abolition of religion, class, caste, and other dogma. With the development of the bramho movement, there was a rapid development in girls’ education. After the independence, a lot of measures were taken to improve the qualitative and quantitative aspects of women’s empowerment in India.

The Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDW) is one of the most important initiatives of the United Nations Organization (UNO). It resists the violence and discrimination against women, it promised to restore the human rights of women and legal and political equality between men and women. This prolonged effort of empowering women started in the 1940s.

Women’s role in politics and economy.
The role of women in politics and the economy is the most effective and significant phase of women’s empowerment in India. After so many reforms, acts, and the implementation of laws finally gave women a chance to represent themselves politically. It was a very difficult task to transform women’s political empowerment into their real social empowerment because it was somehow discovered that women in spite of the existence of the critical mass in the local bodies, women in the legislature were still vulnerable to gender violence. The social attitude toward women’s political roles never changed anything but patriarchy still remains deviously active in creating obstacles for women in the political world. Moreover, women deserve more representatives in the legislature along with local bodies along with all classes, castes, ethnicity, etc.

This got ensured by the leading role of women members in the Lok Sabha when they took inclusion for domestic help, which is one of the most vulnerable sections of our society and excluded from the definition of employment, into the ‘Protection of Women against Sexual Harassment at Workplace Bill’ in 2011.

The concept of economy and women’s empowerment in India interdepend on each other. To gain control over their own life. Women play an important role in the economical development of India, they are participating in this for many decades as forced laborers and are paid very less. In almost all countries women’s contribution to the nation’s economic well-being is still overlooked in national income accounting.

Women make a huge contribution to the political, economical, and social lives of countries, generations,s and many more. So economic development can show a positive impact on women’s control over resources and their participation in the decision-making process, but the reality is that women are subject to economic pressure.

But now in modern times, the way women exercise their empowerment in India has changed the scenario a lot that the previous one. They have initiated their self-help groups, work in factories, and had their own business. One good example of the Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad.

This was the first papad business, which was handled and organized by an organization of women, where they dried the papad at their convenient places and together sell the papad.

Along with this many laws and acts were executed by the Indian Government to boost women’s empowerment in India.

Conclusion
The demand for women’s empowerment makes clear that every human being must need to be treated in a way where their dignity and rights are not getting violated. For a long millennium of time women are suffering from this harassment where their very existence is just nothing more than material, but as the world has evolved and women can now fight for their own rights, there are few sections of women to whom the light has not been yet ventured. To live in a civilized world it is our duty as a human to help people to enlighten and take them out of any dogmatic state of mentality where it harms society in moving forward. We must educate our women and children so that they can carry on the legacy to the upcoming generations and take a part in building a nation.
