SEOUL: South Korea will reimpose a ban on nightclubs, karaoke bars and other nightly entertainment facilities, authorities said on Friday, after the number of new coronavirus cases surged, fanning fears over a potential fourth wave of outbreaks.

Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun announced the curbs, which take effect on Monday for three weeks, after daily new case counts climbed to a three-month high in recent days. The current 10pm dining curfew and ban on gatherings of more than four people will be maintained, he said.

“Signs of a fourth wave of epidemics that we had so striven to head off are drawing nearer and becoming stronger,” Chung told a daily meeting on the pandemic. “We will maintain the current distancing level, but actively reinforce various specific measures depending on the situation.”

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) reported 671 new cases for Thursday, a day after the daily tally hit the highest level since early January, with clusters developing from churches, bars and gyms, mostly in the greater Seoul area

Thailand to close nightspots
BANGKOK: Thailand is considering closing entertainment venues in Bangkok and 40 provinces, its Covid-19 taskforce said on Thursday, as authorities rushed to tackle a new wave of coronavirus cases and the arrival of a highly contagious variant.

The task force urged the public and private sector to let employees work from home and to avoid non-essential travel, while 405 new infections were reported on Thursday in a new outbreak connected to Bangkok’s infamous nightlife.

The spike in infections comes at a tricky time for Thailand, ahead of next week’s annual Songkran festival, known for big social gatherings and notoriously crowded water fights that authorities have banned.

Adding to concerns, Thailand on Wednesday for the first time confirmed the presence locally of the highly transmissible coronavirus variant B.1.1.7 first identified in Britain.

Powered by Streamlyn

The SARS-CoV-2 variant known as B.1.1.7 has been found in more than 100 countries and has been blamed for fuelling new waves of infections in record numbers.

Thailand plans to start its mass immunisation campaign in June but has been immunising health workers or people deemed vulnerable, with more than 300,000 recipients so far.

Thai experts are puzzled at how it evaded the country’s strict border controls and quarantine system, which has helped keep overall cases to a relatively low 30,310 and deaths at 95.

The task force said a change in the quarantine period introduced this month, which reduces it to seven or 10 days, instead of the mandatory 14 days, may be reconsidered.

The health ministry is seeking approval from the task force to close entertainment venues, including pubs and karaoke bars, for two weeks, a task force spokesman said, in 40 provinces and Bangkok. New cases have been reported in 20 provinces.

Earlier on Thursday, government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said entertainment spots with coronavirus cases had already been ordered closed and more categories of venues could be affected if the outbreak spreads

No proof 2 vaccine doses make it safe to travel,

PETALING JAYA: There is no “concrete evidence” to prove that it would be safe for people who have been fully vaccinated for Covid-19 to travel interstate and internationally.

Health minister Dr Adham Baba said this today, adding that his team was still studying reports by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the World Health Organization on allowing those who have been vaccinated to travel freely.

He said that a special meeting with the National Security Council had agreed to consider the matter and will make a decision later on.

According to Adham, those who had received both doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine were all frontliners who already had permission to travel interstate.

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin had previously suggested that Malaysians who had been fully vaccinated be given the green light to cross domestic and international borders, on the condition that they received a certificate of verification to act as an immunity passport.

Adham also revealed that 20 clusters related to the education sector were detected since March, adding that schools with positive cases may be advised to temporarily close after a risk assessment by the district health officers.

Meanwhile, the National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin said discussions will be held with the human resources ministry to look into having companies give their foreign employees some time off to attend their vaccination appointments.

“We will either suggest or make it mandatory for companies to give their workers a day off to receive the vaccine,” Khairy said.

Khairy, who is the science, technology and innovation minister, added that the Covid-19 immunisation task force had also proposed that family members be allowed to travel interstate for the purpose of bringing their elderly parents to receive their jabs.

He added that appointments for recipients under the second phase of the immunisation programme will be sent out through the MySejahtera application beginning today.

“We will send out a notification at least 14 days before the date of the vaccination appointment. We will also send a reminder to the recipient three days before the day of their appointment, and one day before, either through a text message or phone call.”

The second phase of the programme will begin on April 17 for medical frontliners, while those from high-risk groups will receive the vaccine from April 19 onwards.

Kedah, Melaka, Pahang, Sabah, Sarawak, Terengganu and Labuan are set to kick off their vaccination programmes on April 19, while other states will begin from April 22 to 26.

Environment and water minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man also launched a guidebook on a “green immunisation programme” for the handling of clinical waste at the press conference today.

According to Tuan Ibrahim, the nationwide vaccinations are expected to increase Malaysia’s clinical waste production, generating an estimated 2,100 tonnes of waste over the next 12 months.

He also urged the public to be considerate and properly dispose of their face masks to avoid further damaging the environment

US warns China over moves on Philippines, Taiwan
WASHINGTON: The US on Wednesday warned China against what the Philippines and Taiwan see as increasingly aggressive moves, reminding Beijing of Washington’s obligations to its partners.

“An armed attack against the Philippines’ armed forces, public vessels or aircraft in the Pacific, including in the South China Sea, will trigger our obligations under the US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters.

“We share the concerns of our Philippine allies regarding the continued reported massing of PRC maritime militia near the Whitsun Reef,” Price said, referring to the People’s Republic of China.

More than 200 Chinese boats were first spotted on March 7 at Whitsun Reef, around 320km west of Palawan Island in the contested South China Sea, although many have since scattered across the Spratly Islands.

China, which claims almost the entirety of the resource-rich sea, has refused weeks of appeals by the Philippines to withdraw the vessels, which Manila says unlawfully entered its exclusive economic zone.

Tensions have also risen with Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of China, with the self-governing democracy on Wednesday reporting that 15 more of the mainland’s planes crossed into the island’s air defence zone.

Price voiced “concern” about the Chinese moves, saying: “The US maintains the capacity to resist any resort to force or other forms of coercion that would jeopardise the security or the social or economic system of the people on Taiwan.”

He was using language from the Taiwan Relations Act, under which the US is obliged to provide the island with the means to defend itself against Beijing.

President Joe Biden has vowed a robust defence of allies and, in a rare point of continuity with his predecessor Donald Trump, has supported strong pushback against Chinese assertiveness

3 hospitals, 8 doctors face RM45mil suit over wron
GEORGE TOWN: A lawyer here is suing three private hospitals over an alleged wrong cancer diagnosis of his left kidney, which was later discovered to be problem-free.

He is demanding over RM45 million in damages from the hospitals in three separate negligence suits against them and eight doctors who treated him.

Paul Raj Samy Raj who filed the summons at the High Court here recently, said the three hospitals had hurriedly concluded that his kidney was cancerous and had to be removed immediately when in reality, there was nothing wrong.

He said he was fortunate that he did not follow their advice to remove his kidney because a nephrologist at another private hospital said he did not have cancer.

Paul, who turns 54 next month, told FMT that he had gone to the first hospital for a check-up after a hospital in India had detected a likely cyst growth on his left kidney through an ultrasound machine during a regular health check.

In his statement of claim, he said he was first diagnosed with left kidney cancer or left renal cell carcinoma on Nov 11, 2014, by the first hospital.

Paul was given the same diagnosis when he sought second and third opinions at two other private hospitals.

He said all three hospitals had pushed him to have his left kidney removed so as to prevent the cancerous portion from spreading to other organs.

However, when he sought a fourth opinion by a doctor at another hospital on Aug 22, 2019, the nephrologist there found no sign of cancer on his left kidney.

He said as a result of the three earlier wrong diagnoses, he underwent “tremendous untold mental and emotional sufferings, psychological distress, hypertension and restlessness”.

The hospitals, he said, had acted in haste with “commercial intentions” so as to fleece money from him and leave him without a kidney. He also claimed that these hospitals did not advise him about the side effects of having just one working kidney.

Paul said as a result of the wrong diagnoses, he had to spend a lot of money to pay for CT scans, biopsies, ultrasounds and other treatments, all of which also took up a lot of his time.

“The defendants had also scared the plaintiff by advising him to remove his left kidney immediately as they presented threats that the cancer may spread to his other organs.

“They have breached the standard of care that has to be followed by a specialist and have been negligent in their job.

“Such an act is irresponsible and unethical. Cases of medical negligence in Malaysia have been rampant but most patients are unable to sue the hospital and doctors in court as it costs a lot of money.

“They have acted in haste for the sake of making a fast profit from the removal of the left kidney right away, without any conscience of the defendants,” he said in his statement of claim filed by his law firm AG Roseli and Paul.

Paul is suing the first hospital and doctors for RM10 million in exemplary and punitive damages, including another RM5 million in general damages, as he could have lost his kidney due to the wrongful diagnosis given by the said hospital and doctors.

He has also sought for a special damage of RM67,831 for the cost of treatment incurred during the period where he was considered a cancer patient, which brings the total damages sought from the first hospital to RM15,067,831.

Paul sought RM15 million in damages from each of the other two hospitals.

In a statement of defence filed by the three hospitals and eight doctors named as co-defendants, all parties denied claims made by Paul.

In the defence filed by the first hospital, it said the doctors who diagnosed Paul were “independent contractors” and hence not under the hospital’s control.

It denied claims of negligence as alleged and sought the claim to be dismissed since it was filed some six years later.

The other two hospitals also made similar denials, saying they had acted professionally and followed the standard of care afforded by a private hospital.

The eight doctors who were named as defendants in the case also denied the claims.

FMT has contacted the hospitals in question for further comment

Kemaluan lelaki Pakistan dipotong 4 lelaki Kelang

Lepas tu 10 kali naik turun, duduk bawah, naik (ketuk ketampi).

“Lepas dah 10 kali (ketuk ketampi), dia (kawan saya) naikkan seluar.

“India tu cakap saya tak ada cakap you (kena) naikkan seluar. Kenapa you naikkan seluar?” katanya.

“Dia (mangsa) cakap jangan potong (kemaluan).
