Installation of Software in Ubuntu

I am new to Ubuntu or Linux for that purpose.
Tried installing Limewire. It stopped halfway.
I tried to redownload and install again, but this appeared:

Only One Software management tool is allowed to run at the same time.
Please close the other applications e.g. ;Update Manager', ;aptitude' or Synatic' first.

Please help. Not sure what to do. Tks.

CPU 1.8Ghz or 1.2Ghz

My old lappy - Compaq Evo N800v is with Pentium 4 1.8ghz cpu.
However, in System Properties, it shows 1.8Ghz followed by 1.2Ghz (see screen shot).
Anyone can enlighten me> Tks

Dual Channel DDR

My mobo has 4 RAM slots and support Dual Channel
I know that Dual Channel requires identical pairs.
Since my board has 4 slots, is it possible to use 2 different but identical pairs?
I mean, can i use 1 identical pair in DIMM1 & DIMM3 and then another identical pair (which is different from the other pair) in DIMM2 & DIMM4?

Computer cannot start

What is wrong with my pc. Press the 'ON' button, nothing happen. check the wires, power cord - all ok. can be power supply problem? monitor is ok. nothing in the pc is moving (fans etc). as if no power connected.

Streamyx - what the hell is the wrong?

since monday, something is terribly wrong with my streamyx.
at night it is so super duper slow. so slow that a 1mb file download takes >12 minutes; that is it it does not timeout.
however, during the day (say between 6.00 am to about 5.00pm), the connection is ok.
called streamyx, they say they will check, change the port, do this , do that, nothing happens. one fellow say may the port is a problem, if port problem, why does it occur only at night? and why don't just change it?
called them monday nght and today is sar=turday already, still nothing done.

HELP: PC cannot boot

No display on monitor - no signal from the pc i suppose.
No beeps.
the mobo led is lighted. the fans are turning.

Moobo failure? Processor failure?

Alraedy tested the rams on another pc. they are ok.
Vga card tested on another pc. also ok.

What is this? Nvidia popup on SLI

I am using Winfast A6600 128 TD (128bit) AGP.

Whenever I boot into Windows, a popup by Nvidia says "SLI Multi-GPU rendering has been disabled. SLI Multi-GPU reendering has been changed to independent GPU rendering because one of your SLI cards has been removed. SLI multi-gpu rendering requires 2 or more graphic card".

My system is not SLI. My mobo is Abit IS7E.

Warranty just lapse. Now cannot eject.

FFK Sellers

Very often we complain of ffk buyers.
But know what, recently, i had 3 cases with FFK sellers within 1 period of 1 week.
Deal agreed on, but then silence from the seller who after many PMs, SMSs replied to say that they are not going ahead with the deal.
I do not want to reveal these FFKers yet, but would advise that they stay away from here in future.
I will in fact drop subtle hints about them in their Sale threads theynext time I see them offering items for sale.

I intend to set up a pc for LINUX.
Are the hardware requirements same as for WINDOWS.
Proposed specs (already in hand) : Gigabyte GA7VA, Athlon barton 2600+, 512mb pc3200 ddram, gf2 gts 32mb vga, 40gb 7200rpm hdd, cd-rw etc etc.
What about the software : which version of linux, how to go about installing it? is it same for windows such as formatting etc etc..
