What You Need to Know about Financial Planner

A financial planner is a professional helping you to manage your personal finances and this covers various areas such as cash flow management, debt, investments, insurance, education and retirement funding, and lastly estate and trust setup.

Unfortunately there are many individuals in the financial industry who claimed themselves as financial planner or financial advisor. There are few things to look for an experienced financial planner.

1) The qualifications and licenses they hold
A financial planner must have CFP/RFP certification from reputable training organization such as be an active member of the Financial Planning Association of Malaysia (FPAM) or Malaysian Financial Planning Council (MFPC).

There are two main types of licenses they hold in order to carry out financial planning advisory services.
First is they possess a Financial Adviser Representative (FAR) License issued by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).
Second is they must have Capital Market Service Representative License issued by Securities Commission of Malaysia (SC) to deal in capital market activities. As of now Financial Planner does not advice on what stocks to buy or sell and in fact one must have hold Investment Advisor (IA) license for doing so.

Therefore, always check out your financial planner's scope of service and what they can really help you in achieving your financial needs.

What to do?

2) Years of experience in financial services
Best if you can engage a licensed financial planner with at least 3 years experience and above because can better assist and guide you with necessary and sufficient knowledge.

Before engaging with a financial planner, one can request for an initial discovery meeting and normally it is free of charge. This meeting is for you and your future financial planner to understand your current concern, struggles, or worries regarding your financial situation. It can be any topic that is related to finances such as money management, debt, retirement, education, estate planning or even investment enquiry. And at the same time, you also can interview with financial planner about his/her years in experience and their fee structure.

For my experience, engage a financial planner about ten years older to you or share the same goals and interest with you because to narrow down the generation gap and be friend with them and I believe you can learn something from your financial planner.

3) Disclose their compensation structure
Different financial planners have different fee structure. Basically there are 3 main compensation structures.
i) product commission based. Just like normal agent/advisors outside selling the financial products to you. For example, I just want to buy a standalone medical insurance and financial planner will recommend the suitable one for you. This structure is clear cut and simple.

ii) fee based. It can be hourly fee, flat fee, or even performance-based fee. It is in your interest to agree on a compensation structure and to make sure they are given incentive to help you achieve your objectives. The fee may varies subject to the complexity of your financial difficulty.

iii) combination of fee and commission. This is normal norm for financial planner to have both.

But for better objectivity and transparency, engage a financial planner who operates on a fee basis, not selling you any financial products just want to earn commission. And usually fee-based financial planner will spend more time on understanding you the overall cash flow, helping you in mapping out your short-, medium-, and long term goals. This approach is to deal with concerns in relation to your financial situation, resources, and commitments as they are all inter-related.

Because when a financial planner developing your financial plan, they will draw up a detailed list of your assets and liabilities in place to establish your current situation. They will then analyze your present and future cash flow and sources of income to establish the financial resource that you have. Next they will help you to articulate your life goals, resolve any conflicts that may result from competing goals and estimate the finances that are needed to fund those goals. They will also help you to have a better understanding of investment risk and is to construct the investment portfolio funding your different goals.
