In the latest step of the budget airline’s global expansion efforts, AirAsia X (AAX) has officially announced a new international route connecting Kuala Lumpur to Bahrain and London’s Gatwick Airport. Per the official statement, Bahrain will be the company’s strategic aviation hub, allowing it “to connect Asia with the Middle East and Europe more effectively.”

Reuters reports that AirAsia X will launch the Kuala Lumpur-Bahrain-London route in June 2026 and will operate it with its A330 fleet as part of its push to expand international operations. The publication further notes that the airline has been exploring its options to refinance about US$600 million (~RM235.35 million) in debt.

MACC probing massage parlour chain over 2-tier accounting system

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has remanded five people in an investigation into corruption and money laundering at a leading massage parlour chain.
An MACC source said the anti-graft agency and the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) are investigating the massage parlour chain, which has 32 outlets nationwide and is believed to have been operating since 2023, for allegedly practising a two-tier accounting system.

The source said most of the company’s cash sales are unreported, resulting in an estimated tax leakage of about RM7.56 million a year.

The investigation also found evidence of bribes paid to enforcement officers and local authorities to facilitate the company’s operations and as protection money, the source said.

MACC has frozen about RM11.5 million in 121 personal and corporate bank accounts related to the company.

Five commercial premises worth about RM7.3 million, two industrial properties valued at about RM2.3 million, seven residential properties with an estimated value of RM7.7 million, and five luxury vehicles costing about RM1.5 million have been seized.

The source said the assets, located in the Klang Valley and Johor, are suspected to be proceeds from money laundering.

The suspects, comprising company directors and senior management staff of several business entities, aged between 30 and 50, were arrested around the Klang Valley and Putrajaya yesterday.

57-year-old 'Uncle Jet' graduates from USM as Malaysia's oldest doctor

GEORGE TOWN: A 57-year-old former engineer, Dr Ng Jet Kwan, has made history as Malaysia's oldest medical graduate after receiving his degree at Universiti Sains Malaysia's (USM) 63rd convocation.

Born in Batu Pahat and commonly known as Uncle Jet, he fulfilled a childhood dream after initially pursuing engineering when he failed to secure a medical seat following secondary school.

"In the early 1990s, opportunities were very limited as there were only four public higher education institutions offering medical programmes in Malaysia, making competition very intense.

"My parents were hawkers and we were not a wealthy family, but the ambition never faded. I registered at USM at the age of 51 after both my children had finished their studies," he told reporters here today.

Ng said his daughter, Dr Ng Zhu Chin, 29, is now a resident doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States, while his son, Ng Zhu Han, 25, is a lawyer in Australia.

He thanked the lecturers at the School of Medical Sciences at USM's health campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan, particularly his mentor, neuroscientist Prof Datuk Dr Jafri Malin Abdullah, for their guidance and encouragement.

On studying in Kelantan, Ng said his initial challenge was understanding the local dialect, but he adapted quickly due to the friendly nature of the locals.

"Although some lecturers were younger than me, it was not a barrier. In fact, some were my age and we could discuss things casually. I was also close with my classmates and I am grateful to have finished my studies on schedule," he said.

He also thanked the Health Ministry for its policy allowing older students to pursue their ambitions.

"I have started my housemanship at Hospital Pakar USM in the general surgery department.

"After completing my training there, I intend to get my licence and permit to open my own clinic," he said.

Ng had previously studied traditional Chinese medicine at a university in Singapore from 2012 to 2017.

KUALA LUMPUR: Garden International School (GIS) has launched its new RM100 million sports complex to raise relevant, responsible and resilient learners.

The British international schools said the five-level, 200,000-square-foot facility is equipped with world-class amenities that include an Olympic-size swimming pool, two full-length indoor basketball courts, two tennis courts and a fully equipped gym and fitness suite.

"This sports complex and underground car park have been eight years in the making, a project designed to meet the needs of both our students and the wider community.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 22-year-old has been awarded RM7.4mil in damages after winning a suit against a government hospital and its doctors for medical negligence, which led his left hand and right leg to be amputated five years ago.

High Court judge Datuk Su Tiang Joo on Monday (Nov 3) awarded K. Vimal Raj RM6.4mil, with the bulk of the sum for the purchase of robotic arms and a leg.

The court also granted, among others, RM213,000 for pain and suffering resulting from the amputations that Vimal had undergone as a result of the hospital’s treatment, care and management, RM180,000 for home care and RM20,000 in aggravated damages.

Vimal and his father, J. Krishnasamy, 51, who were the plaintiffs in the suit, were also awarded RM200,000 in costs.

However, Justice Su disallowed a claim for loss of earnings by Krishnasamy after ruling that there was no documentary evidence submitted to prove his case.

In 2020, the plaintiffs filed the suit through Messrs AJ Ariffin Yeo & Harpal and named the Health Ministry, a government hospital, 12 doctors and the government as defendants.

On July 22, 2024, both parties entered into a consent judgment on liability, which was admitted by the government as the sixth defendant, while the claim against all the other defendants was discontinued.

According to the statement of claim, the second plaintiff, a minor aged 15 at the time of the incident, was previously healthy, active and had no chronic illnesses. However, on Jan 14, 2019, his father sent him to the Emergency Department of a government hospital due to a severe infection of the scrotal skin.

He was later diagnosed with chronic balanitis, a treatable condition that commonly occurs among uncircumcised males.

On Jan 23, 2019, the second plaintiff, who was still unconscious, was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) after his condition deteriorated and he fell into a coma.

While his son was in the ICU, the father noticed that his son's toes and fingers had turned blue black and immediately informed the medical officers attending to his son and sought an explanation about the condition, but none was given.

Due to the severe black discolouration on the left hand and right leg, which rendered both limbs non-functional due to cell death, a medical officer informed the first plaintiff that, to save the boy's life, his left hand and right leg above the knee had to be amputated.

According to the plaintiffs, the hospital failed to make a proper diagnosis of the second plaintiff's condition, which led to the amputation of his limbs. - Bernama

A new “pay-per-use” system for shared facility maintenance is being studied for future affordable housing developments, said Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.

Speaking at the Kuala Lumpur Architecture Week (KLAW) 2025, Nga said the initiative is part of broader housing reforms aimed at improving equity in public housing. Under the proposed system, residents will use access cards to track their usage of shared facilities—such as pools, gyms, and courts—and be charged based on actual usage rather than a fixed monthly maintenance fee.

The concept is being piloted at Rumah Bakat Madani in Penang – SkyWorld Pearlmont. The project features a clubhouse with an infinity pool, pickleball and badminton courts, a gym, and a children’s playground. Nga said this model will serve as a reference for future public housing projects and may also incorporate vertical schools to improve educational access for low-income communities.

“The goal is to raise industry standards and create a more equitable housing landscape,” Nga said.

The Rumah Bakat Madani initiative is the country’s largest affordable housing project to date, offering 900-square-foot freehold condominiums equipped with modern amenities and shared facilities.

Nga also highlighted the ministry’s aim to involve more private players in setting up Industrialised Building System (IBS) facilities to accelerate the adoption of modular construction methods such as Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction. This move supports sustainable urban growth by reducing waste and limiting pollution.

KLAW 2025, held as a curtain-raiser for the ASEAN Real Estate Conference and the 24th International Architecture, Interior Design and Building Exhibition, is expected to attract over 50,000 international visitors and generate RM2 billion in transactions.

KUALA LUMPUR: The sharp hike in Universiti Malaya's (UM) medical tuition fees risks shutting out academically qualified B40 students from pursuing degrees in medicine and other critical fields, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The MCA president said the party is deeply concerned about recent developments in Malaysia's higher education landscape, especially policies that appear to marginalise children from low-income households.

He said these include the dual admission pathway at public universities and the rising costs associated with direct-entry programmes.

"It is disheartening to note that public universities are being seen as increasingly selective towards students from high-income families. This raises serious questions about the fairness of the meritocracy we claim to uphold," he said at a press conference at Wisma MCA on Tuesday (June 24).

He was referring to Universiti Malaya's recent fee structure, which shows that tuition fees for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme soared to RM500,000 for the 2025/2026 intake under the university's direct channel, known as Saluran Terbuka Universiti Malaya (Satu).

This marks a 67.1% jump from RM299,200 in the 2024/2025 session.

In stark contrast, students who secure a place via the UPU channel – the centralised government admission platform – are charged only RM15,000 for the same five-year programme, as their places are government subsidised, said Dr Wee.

He questioned whether such a drastic disparity in fees sends the wrong message to students from the B40 and M40 income brackets.

"Are we now saying that children from less privileged backgrounds do not deserve to become doctors or pursue critical fields? Is the medical profession now reserved exclusively for the wealthy?" he asked.

He warned that academic results alone may no longer guarantee a place at public universities if wealth becomes the new gatekeeper.

Referring to Universiti Malaya's annual reports, Dr Wee pointed out that enrolments through Satu have risen sharply – from just 142 in 2018 to 399 in 2022 – signalling a trend that prioritises financial capacity over academic merit.

Citing data from the Higher Education Ministry, he added that nearly 60% of applicants to public universities in 2022 came from B40 households.

"What kind of message are we sending to this majority? That unless you can pay half a million ringgit, you have no future in medicine?" he asked.

Dr Wee also echoed concerns raised by former Universiti Utara Malaysia vice-chancellor Professor Dr Haim Hilman Abdullah, who warned in December last year that the open or commercial channels for university entry could entrench systemic inequality.

Prof Haim had argued that such models risk marginalising STPM students and those without the financial means to self-fund their studies.

Man held for trespassing into home during car repo

SUNGAI PETANI: A repossession agent was arrested after allegedly trespassing into a home in Aman Jaya to seize a vehicle.

Kuala Muda police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the 24-year-old suspect was detained by the roadside in Jalan Jati at 10.30pm on Friday.

Police said the man was arrested to assist investigations for house trespass.

"Investigations revealed that the complainant, a 38-year-old man, found the padlock on his front gate had been opened when he returned home at 7pm on Saturday," Hanyan said in a statement.

The complainant later discovered that his Perodua Alza had been repossessed by the bank and suspected that the agent had entered his property without permission.

"Unhappy that his locked gate had been opened without his knowledge, he lodged a police report," he said.

Hanyan said the suspect admitted to entering the complainant's house and towing the car on May 29.

However, the complainant only realised his car was missing on June 14, roughly two weeks later, when he returned home.

"The suspect claimed the repossession was due to eight months of missed installments by the vehicle owner," Hanyan said.
