becoming driving instructor

How do we become a driving instructor?

First step is (I think) go for SPIM test. Might cost RM1000.

Then? Do driving instructors work at driving schools like full time employees on salary? Or how do they get paid?

Does the driving school provide the students (assigning walk in customers to instructors), or are the instructors left to find students in their own way?

How about the vehicles? These vehicles have a second set of "instructor brakes". They're painted differently. They have to get different insurance, and IINM, JPJ inspects at 6 or 12 monthly intervals. Do the instructors provide these vehicles themselves, or do the schools provide the vehicles.

We sometimes see homes with signs on their front gate offering driving instructions. These instructors don't have regular offices (if they're out teaching, who's going to sit at the office, so have to hire somebody else). They're frequently one-man-shows. Are they full fledged driving schools with permits from JPJ? Or are they semi-independent operator, loosely attached to some driving school?

remote printer pdf

I'm looking for software that will allow remote printing to pdf.

The user prints something, and it goes to a pdf file. But the pdf file does not appear on the user's own computer, but rather on a server on the Internet. Multiple users can print to the same server, which saves the files in a different directory for each user.

The idea is for a company with multiple site offices. When the branches prints, it is saved as pdf on the file server at HQ (in separate folders, so that we know who printed what). Periodically, HQ will look through those files, deciding which needs to be actually printed to paper.

I'm wondering if such software already exists, or do I have to create it myself. If anyone knows anything like this, please post here. Even if it doesn't do exactly that, but something close, or some part of it.

making signboard

Anyone has any recommendation for places making cheap signboards?
I've been asking around for a small 10x4 feet unlighted signboard in Kepong.
So far, the prices I get hover around RM20-25 p.s.f. A few places quoted even more.
The best offer I found so far is RM15 p.s.f. using zinc sheet metal.
Prices seems very high to me. Am I being too much of a cheapskate, or am I asking at the wrong places?

BTW: excluding the stretched tarpaulin type boards, because it needs to last 3 years.

microwave keropok

I hear we can microwave keropok keping, instead of deep fry in oil. So I tried. But the result is a bit less than satisfactory.

It's nice in that the whole house does not get covered in oil, and more importantly, the finished keropok is not drenched in oil. But frequently, there would be some parts at the edges that has yet to expand, while some other parts a bit nearer to the center has turned a bit brownish. If I wait a bit more for all to expand (I'm looking at it through the window on the microwave oven), those part that's brownish turns completely black, and burnt.

I've tried various combos eg
- 4 pieces, medium-high, 1 minute; followed by 30 sec on high
- 4 pieces, high, 45 sec
- etc

Am I doing it wrong, or is this all that is to be expected when microwaving keropok? Or does MY microwave suck, and there are large uneven hot and cold spots in there (more than to be expected from most microwave ovens). It's old (10+ years), 600W, no-name-brand, no grill function.

Anyone else have tried doing this before?

cheap used ice shaving machine

Does anyone know where I can get a cheap, second hand, ice shaving machine? Like those you see in ABC stalls.

I previously bought the small plastic hand cranked type. RM50 at one of the hypermarts (I forget which). It worked. But was too small and flimsy. Very hard to get the ice to shave, we have to rotate the crank like mad only to have very little ice shaved. There was no gear. Didn't use it much. And it broke after about 3 months. So now I aim for a bigger machine.

I have searched and found that the cheapest prices (new) is RM200 (manual, hand cranked) or RM350 (motorized).

I want to make these ...

problem porting from maxis to tunetalk

I have a maxis postpaid phone. Their broadband is expensive. So I decided to switch to Tunetalk.

Applied for the porting at the end of February. Tunetalk says will take about 2 days. At the end of it, my Maxis account will be closed automatically. I waited, and waited, and waited, and nothing happens.

Now, it's 2 weeks later. I phone Tunetalk, they say the response from Maxis was "not Maxis phone number". They tell me to contact Maxis and ask if my phone number is with Maxis. That's a stupid question to ask. I KNOW my phone is with Maxis. This is postpaid, and I get the bill every month, and I pay them every month, and I know who I'm paying.

Anyway, I phone Maxis, they say that they've been having issues. The server for porting "has problem", nobody can port out until the problem is resolved. They don't know how long it will take. They deny issuing the "not Maxis phone number" response to Tunetalk.

My question is, is this true? Anyone else faced a similar problem? Are they just giving me some cock-and-bull story in the hope that I will give up and just stay with Maxis?

I hear that the telco have an obligation to complete or reject the porting process in 5 days. Is that true?

Is Maxis issuing that wrong response code to cover their backside (later when queried, they will say the didn't exceed the 5 day limit, because they did send the (wrong) response). And they will take forever to fix their server which will be down 364.5 days a year?

car accident workshop, batu caves

Anybody can recommend a good and cheap workshop near Batu Caves? Or even not near Batu Caves, but important thing is must be cheap, and quality acceptable (as in the car is not going to star rusting after 2 weeks ).

My friend had a single-car-accident that crushed the left side of her Perodua Kelisa. Needs a replacement front panel near the front wheel, and knock-knock to straighten the front and rear door on one side. Plus spray paint.

She'd asked a few workshops, and got quoted mostly around RM1200-1400. Is there any bargain-basement, very cheap workshop, that can do it for much less. She was hoping for around RM700. Not sure if that would be realistic. Perhaps somebody knows a good and cheap place, like those operating from "squatter like" premises, instead of renting factory lots like those she went to.

The car is drivable, and she's willing to go far from KL, if it'll get her a good price. Like everyone else these days, she has money problems, so want to save as much as possible. Claiming insurance is out as it's only RM1200, and she has 55% NCB now.

It replaces the lens on an SLR, and fits on trinocular microscopes like this.

Most of those I found online seems to be a few hundred RM (plus postage). If none can be found, I'm thinking of making one myself DIY. The tube can be just normal PVC pipes painted black on the inside. The problem is how to attach the camera.

Wondering where to get scrap/unwanted old-non-working lenses so that I can salvage the metal mount.

how to port forward with iptables

I have a gateway machine (a linux box at 192.168.1.1) hooked up to a Streamyx line. I use iptables' PREROUTING to forward incoming connections to the webserver (at 192.168.1.6) like this ...

iptables -t nat -D PREROUTING -p tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.6

The trouble is, the webserver sees all packets as originating from 192.168.1.1 (the gateway). I cannot record the actual IP address of the visitor to the website. I would like to. Am I doing port forwarding wrong on iptables?
