They always say to engage in a professional if you want to improve financial planning right. But I'm curious about the quality of the advice. Anyone here paid for financial planning services? What areas and how much?

I can start. I took advantage of the free 1-hour financial planning session offered during Securities Commission-organised Invest Smart event last year. They assigned me to a nice lady, who then asked what type of advice I was looking for (ie retirement planning, investment, general, will/wasiat etc). I just picked general.

She guided me through something like a monthly expenses exercise, to estimate if I'm spending more than I earn. She also asked about my existing investments and their assessed my portfolio's risk level. And finally she asked about my insurance before the time is up. We didn't get too deep into insurance, which is a shame -I would want to know if I'm under or over-covered and if there are better plans for me (I'm not sure if they can do this actually - can someone let me know?).

All in all, it felt like therapy, somewhat. It was nice when she said I'm on the right track, and she pointed out areas to improve on.

The experience made me tempted to splurge on full-on, comprehensive financial planning services. But I wonder if I should increase my net worth first to make it the fees worth my while because I don't want to just get generic advice

So... anyone here can share how was your experience like?

Specific LHDN / tax filing questions

Hi all,

I have some questions about tax filing, hope someone here can help me.

My last tax was filed in March 2016, for 2015 taxes. I was an employee. I quit end of Sept 2015.

Oct 2015-July 2016 worked as a freelancer. August 2016 registered sole prop finally.

Now getting my files in order for next tax filing.

My questions are:
- Do I get to claim business expenses from Oct 2015-July 16? Or can claim only from date of sole prop registration? I have the receipts and invoices.

- From previous threads here, I found out that sole prop must file taxes by June 30th every year. Does this mean I only do it next year?

- I'm going to go with cloud accounting company. I have a few candidates, but wondering if there are any recommendations from this group. Preferably a company that is known to help tax accounting (and knowledgeable in tax deductions) for online-based freelancers.

How to accept bitcoin for your business: A guide

Hey guys. I've been active in the crypto/bitcoin scene. I'm very well aware that some of you take bitcoin seriously, some don't. Regardless, there are still opportunities for you to accept it as payment for products/services in your store (works for both online and offline), then quickly turn it into RM/USD/GBP/EUR.

Pros of accepting bitcoin:
- As above, bitcoin transactions will never have chargebacks (unlike PayPal, for example)
- Get more potential customers from worldwide
- Hundreds of thousands of reputable merchants already accept it. In Malaysia, we have a handful (here and here)

It wouldn't be fair for me to not add the cons:
- Digital currency, and requires medium-high digital security knowledge
- Needs vigilant research in order not to get sucked into quick-rich scams (avoid bitcoin cloud mining offers, please)
- If you keep it without converting to RM/USD/GBP.EUR, the value may go down quickly. It's a volatile currency. On the upside it may go up, too

Ok, so you want to consider accepting bitcoin for your shop/business. What do you do? There's a few routes.

1) Print/include Bitcoin Accepted Here logo at your shop and announce on social media. Contact me and I can help to get your shop listed on guides, websites, etc.

2) Have a secure bitcoin wallet. There are plenty, but you should look for something that has multiple layers of security - with multi-sig technology, can enable 2FA, email confirmation, new address generation etc.

3) From your bitcoin wallet, generate (a) a bitcoin address and (b) a QR code. Customers who want to pay with bitcoin can then send bitcoin to these addresses, and it should arrive in less than 30 mins. All transactions are publicly-viewable on blockchain.info, so there are no way to make false transactions. Your wallet should also be able to notify you when you receive the bitcoins.

For security, ensure to change your address every so often. Because transactions are transparent, there may (or may not be) people who scan the blockchain to look at 'rich' wallets to target.

4) Once you have the bitcoins, you can let it stay in your bitcoin wallet (note the con about volatility) or exchange it back to fiat immediately. How to do this? A few ways:

a) Sell on localbitcoins. Not recommended for newbies. Lots of scammers who claim to have sent money but did not and urge you to release bitcoins anyway. Plus it could take hours, or days.

b) Sell to strangers/people. Not recommended for the same reason.

c) Sell on exchanges. You could transfer to Bitx, Malaysia's most popular bitcoin exchange and sell your bitcoins there. Alternatively, you can also transfer to E-Coin (also known as Wirex) and get a plastic bitcoin debit card, and withdraw your money from any ATM.

I myself am pro E-Coin/Wirex. Here's anarticleof a case study on how a small business used Wirex to accept bitcoin. If you download Wirex app (android, iOS compatible), you'll get to claim a free virtual visa card to play around with.

Sometimes right when I see people complain about money, I super super bersyukur I'm doing well financially

I have some lucky breaks in life - study until degree -> FAMA sponsor. self-finance my own masters

Work here and there while saving money and making ok choices and I'm on my way to retire ok.

Ofcos la when see people tayang wealth here there get very jealous, but for the most part I believe the more you tayang the more you actually pokai.

I get my financial info from english-language websites mostly, then apply to life in malaysia. I dont want to be anak derhaka or anything but parents dont really teach about money. In fact they make bad financial decisions like living over their means.

Where you guys learn pulak about good money habits ah?

So I work/write/am exposed to a lot of Fintech (financial technology) stuff, and let me tell you the advances in this field is CRAZY. I love it. Banks are crazy scared of these advancements because it will make many of their services redundant in the future.

The applications are endless, but one of them is this: You don't have to use a Malaysian bank card to verify/link your PayPal Malaysia account

How: Get a virtual Visa card. But not any card, a card that is issued by fintech companies.

I personally use E-Coin/Wirex card. Disclaimer: I provide work for them, but I also genuinely love what they do.

These are also dubbed 'bitcoin debit cards'. If you use bitcoin, yay for you. If you don't, it's not required. Beginner's guide to bitcoin debit card

I have not tried any other cards, but if you know of any other, let me know!

Step 1: Get an E-Coin card

Go to E-Coin website and register an account.

An E-Coin card costs USD3, and you can only pay for it in bitcoin. BUT they are having a free cards campaign now for Malaysians! See my sig.

Note: You don't have to get USD account. Get GBP or EUR too if you want.

Step 2: Open your Paypal Malaysia account

Go ahead and link your new card in PayPal. You'll need to have about USD3 in the card, for the Paypal verification. They will perform a transaction on the card (reimbursable)

Go back to your E-Coin account, check transactions, and enter that code in PayPal.

Step 3: Success!

Account verified!

No USD? No problem. As a service to this community, I can help you send USD to your account - not for free lah you have to repay me in RM. How to calculate:

IMHO, the coolest financial innovations now come from bitcoin startups. A bitcoin startup I'm attached to offers cloud-based hybrid personal banking where you can link bitcoin account to fiat accounts in up to 3 currencies, USD, GBP and EUR. The fiat accounts are also bitcoin debit card accounts, so essentially you have Visa/Mastercard virtual or plastic card that you can also use to spend or withdraw from ATMs if you like it liquid (who doesn't).

There's no thread on freelancing here in LYN so I'm starting one. Mods please let me know if this is OK/not OK.

I became a freelancer recently (freelance writing) and had to look for information from all over the place. Found out there aren't many resources out there. Self-employment via freelance work is a type of business, too.

Here's what I know so far about being a professional freelancer in Malaysia. Sifus, please add on your wisdom, suggestions, etc and I will update this front page. If anything is crazy wrong, definitely let us know.

Current freelancers out there lurking in this thread (full time or part time), feel free to add in your experience - tips you used to be better, earn more money, etc.

General tips

Getting Clients:
- word of mouth
- online freelance sites like Upwork, Freelancer, Sevendays, Fiverr (requires paypal)

Contract:
- Always insist on contract to avoid non-payment of work

Payment:
- It depends on both parties, but getting 50% advance payment is recommended
- Invoice encouraged but not necessary

Taxes:
- Register as sole proprietorship (RM30/RM60) or Limited Liability Partnership (RM5xx). Report to LHDN using Borang B.
