Here is some good news for scammed victims.

SC recovers RM31 mil

"But not all (complaints) will be entertained. We cannot just pay out the money, the investors must produce proof of their investment," she told reporters at a press conference, adding "recruiters or upliners in the scheme will not be considered for compensation".

I didn't see and explanation or contract requirements from their brochure.

Edit: Comes with modem as well for RM160

Are you a Bear like me?

It all looks pretty rosy this past week. DJIA manage to maintain above 8000 points and still climbing. KLCI rebounded and stays above 1000 points. CPO is also rebounding and Crude Oil is now above USD50. Banks have passed the stress tests. But I don't know why I still feel so Bearish about the market.

Everytime I look at the news and hear analyst and newsman calling the return to economic recovery and the worst is over, I can't help but feel it's all just smokes and mirrors. As far as I know nothing has actually changed other than the fact that we already accepted the world is facing a recession and are doing something about it.

At the end of last year when the slump was really bad, everyone was guessing where was the bottom and any slight spike would see some analyst guessing that was the end of the bear. In other words, we've heard it all before. When the markets are obviously going down, they all say the bottom is DJIA 5000 or KLCI 500 and substantiate with all their knowledge and jargons about the conclusion. . When it is all going up and they all reverse completely and also with the same jargons and data justifications. Something similar to analysts and their stock picks target prices.

The current good news that I see constantly being forced to our senses is the same I feel. I know all these news are important to 'stimulate' the masses to spend and not save up their paychecks so the economy will be kickstarted again. If you know tomorrow wil be a better day, why bother saving your pay for tomorrow, right? But I feel these news 'stimulants' are actually beginning to convinced the people who are spinning it in the first place. Meaning they actually believe the propaganda they are telling.

People react to situations and when hardships comes, they react by adjusting and adapting their lifestyles. For instance, when people sell their SUVs and buy a Prius to adapt to higher fuel costs, they aren't going to sell back the Prius for a new SUV in less than 6 months even when the costs of fuel have come down. Demand destruction has already occured and the masses find that they can actually live satisfyingly even without the earlier luxury of low fuel costs. In other words, prices may be up but sales volume is still low. So oil prices at the moment cannot be sustained as there aren't as much volume. When countries see that they aren't earning as much revenue even with higher fuel price, they'll start pumping more and more to gain back what is lost. Back to square one. Revenue will still be lower due to lack of consumption.

I'm bearish not because the world markets haven't completely collapse yet as it should but because I feel not enough time has passed before the good news is supposed to come in. Time is important because it will show delayed facts that will turn up about the economy. Perfect example is how time after it has passed shows how bad the US banks have actually failed. Some banks are still failing and are just hanging on by a thread. It won't fail completely due to bailout funds but in terms of business health, it's sick and bed-ridden and needs constant care to survive. More bad news are expected but it'll be played down with more new stimulus-packages. The results of the effectiveness of these new- stimulus packages will never be known anytime soon.

TL:DR

I guess I'm bearish about the world markets is because I haven't seen any real recovery plans actualy taking place or allowed the time to take place and actual results actually prove it works. In stock market time-line, that will be old news for the future. So let's just say I rather be late for the party and enjoy the climax rather than turn up early and realised later there was no party, only a funeral.

So are you a Bear like me?

note: Sorry for the long post, just been thinking about it recently with all these good news around.

Phone enrollment Insurance?

I just got a call from a tele-marketing person, trying to get me to enroll in a life-insurance policy for 20 years. Supposedly only for Public Bank customers, underwritten by ING.

The deal is the term is 20 years, after every 5 year cycle, they return 20% of your paid premiums for the 5 years back to you on the 6th year.

The coverage is only for 20 years.

It's basically just a life insurance policy, where in case of natural death, they pay your next of kin RM125k. Death due to accidents are paid double RM250k.

When I ask for more details or a website I can refer too, the person say this is a phone enrollment offer only but can get all information I need from the phone if I need more info. I'm thinking how the heck can I ask every question about insurance, right?

Policy will be sent to me in 2 weeks upon activation of the policy and funds will be auto-debited from my credit card. 15 days cooling off period to cancel but with written statement to ING.

My question to all insurance agents and experts are, is this appropriate or even ethical in terms of insurance selling? I thought insurance selling has some form of respect to the individual to be insured especially life insurance whereby the agent will meet and do some form of health check on the person.

When I ask about any needed documentation about current health, the marketeer said no checkup is required. Death by means of illnesses, natural and accidents will still be covered, including full permanent disability.

So is there any such offer such as this?

Political Instability In Malaysia

Now if you read the papers especially after the recent elections, local newspapers have been reporting non-stop about the politics in Malaysia. Since the opposition captured 5 states in the Peninsula and 82 seats in parliament, there are rumours that Pakatan Rakyat will be forming the new government soon. Statements by PR leaders about MPs crossing over to the PR side in Sabah will swing the simple majority held by BN in Parliament over to PR.

We all know what happened to our market when it re-opened after the elections. Circuit breaker was activated and KLSE stopped trading for 1 hour to cool off the sell-off in the market. But counters with fundamentals still intact regain their composure and politically linked stocks are punished. Now if there was a complete change of government to PR, can you imagine what would happened to most of the GLCs therefore bringing down the KLCI index even lower. I won't be surprised if the circuit breaker was to be activated again.

My question is, if that were to happen again and the sell off doesn't stop when the market re-open, what would be your actions during these times? Do you sell, hold or buy more? Or even stand at the sidelines and watch the fireworks.

I ask this now because it seems inevitable something will be happening soon in the political scene in Malaysia.

Let's have some discussion about DIGI counter here. I read with interest an article written by the DIGI CEO for TheStar.

Overlooking the Obvious

Seems the DIGI boss is not really that keen on 3G even though they recently acquired Time.Com for the 3G spectrum License.

Latest DIGI 4th quarterly results can be found here. Do note the date of that document is 5th Feb 2008, so it means we are reading some future event. haha

Here is an summary of the management's expectations for 2008.

"These are the Group's revised growth targets for 2008:
. revenue growth at high single digit
.
Online Trading Vs. Remisier/Broker Trading

Here is an article in The Star worth reading regarding the costs difference between online vs remisier/broker trading.

Online Trading Vs. Remisier

Discuss the Pros and Cons of your preferred method of executing your buy/sell orders. Personally I like to call up my broker for a chat, since I don't trade in hundreds of thousands, the amount saved by the commission is negligible for me. But I experienced once that I wanted to execute an order fast but my broker's phone was busy. So I had to call another number and her colleague passed her the message for me.

Share dividend - How is it calculated?

Can anyone tell me how does share dividends work?

Recently YTLPOWR announced a share dividend of 1 treasury share for every 25 existing shares.

"Distribution of One (1) treasury shares for every Twenty-Five (25) existing ordinary shares of RM0.50 each held in the Company ("Share Dividend") . "

"LISTING'S CIRCULAR NO. L/Q : 47224 OF 2007

Distribution of One (1) treasury shares for every Twenty-Five (25) existing ordinary shares of RM0.50 each held in the Company ("Share Dividend") .

Kindly be advised of the following :

1) The above Company's securities will be traded and quoted [ "Ex - Dividend"] as from : [ 19 December 2007 ]
2) The last date of lodgement : [ 24 December 2007 ]
MANAGER, SEC. MARKET "

Is it too late to buy more share to be entitled to this? Since 19th Dec is tomorrow, I assume anyone currently having the shares in their CDS would be accounted for on the 19th. And share distribution would only happen on the 24th. Is this right? Or does it mean that from 19th until the 24th, anyone who bought shares during that period are entitled to the share dividend.
