KKM: 5 million Malaysians have kidney disease

“Pada tahun 2010, Malaysia membelanjakan RM572 juta untuk rawatan penyakit buah pinggang tahap akhir. Hari ini, kos itu melonjak kepada RM3.3 bilion setiap tahun.

“Jika kita gagal bertindak dengan berani pada hari ini, menjelang tahun 2040, lebih daripada 106,000 rakyat Malaysia akan memerlukan rawatan dialisis,” katanya berucap sempena majlis perasmian Sambutan Hari Buah Pinggang Sedunia Peringkat Kebangsaan 2026 di Wisma Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) di sini, hari ini.

Kidney disease by stage (old data):

This seems to be the most alarming stat due to a couple of reasons. Firstly, this table is based on 2021 data and the total then was 2.6 million, which has grown to 5 million in 2026. Secondly, look at the number of 3rd stage patients. There is no way we can have that many dialysis centers built in time and kidney transplants in the next couple of years.

I am no expert myself but based on the information above my hypothesis is that the gradient of the below graph is going to increase and therefore the graph cannot be used for extrapolation for forecasting. One other factor to consider is the median age of Malaysia is increasing and we will no longer have "young people" as the majority of the population.

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia can no longer sustain the expansion of haemodialysis services as kidney failure cases continue rising without pause, said a top Ministry of Health (MOH) official.

Health deputy director-general (medical) Dr Nor Azimi Yunus said the national dialysis burden — both financial and clinical — has reached an unsustainable level. The rising number of dialysis patients each year reflects an alarming trend with no signs of plateauing.

“Are we proud to have more dialysis centres every year? No. We can no longer afford to keep building new dialysis centres – whether by MOH, the private sector, or NGOs. ‘Tak cukup mesin dah sekarang.’

“How much can the government afford to spend, and for how many more years?” Dr Nor Azimi said at the Galen Centre for Health and Social Policy’s symposium, “Saving Lives: Strengthening Peritoneal Dialysis Care in Malaysia Through Public-Private Partnerships”, supported by Vantive Health LLC.

Malaysia’s health care system is grappling with a growing burden of chronic kidney disease, driven primarily by diabetes and other comorbidities. Diabetes accounted for 52 per cent of all new dialysis patients in 2022.

Approximately 51,000 Malaysians currently require dialysis, with projections estimating this number could surpass 106,000 by 2040— potentially costing the health care system RM3.2 billion annually, according to the Galen Centre.

Dr Nor Azimi said the incidence of kidney disease has been rising continuously without any signs of stabilising. She emphasised the urgent need to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease before patients reach end-stage renal failure.

“Are we failing at this? I’m not sure – but when we look at the numbers, the graphs are continuously rising. They are a lot. It has never plateaued – not even for one year. In fact, it keeps increasing. So we must take this seriously,” she said.

It has a mortality rate of 70% i.e. 30 times more deadly than COVID-19. Is there no screening at KLIA? In 1999 there was a Nipah virus outbreak in Malaysia that killed 105 people out of 265 confirmed cases.

Did anyone see a recent video ad showing Rafizi Ramli in an interview with a lady (the show host) promoting some investment scheme where according to the video he personality guaranteed returns or something like that? Could that be a deepfake video and did anyone else see that ad? I think the public should be informed if it was a deepfake.

Spritzer expanding to international markets

PETALING JAYA: Spritzer Bhd, Malaysia’s largest bottled water producer, is eyeing growth in international markets, and is focusing on key markets such as China, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands to drive future growth.

“We are actively taking steps to grow our online sales channel – through e-commerce platforms such as Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok – and to grow our footprint in key international markets as far as possible,” Spritzer told SunBiz via email.

As of end 2023, its export sales made up less than 10% of the group’s revenue.

“We have a wholly owned trading company operating in Guangzhou, China, which in April 2016 started the sale and wholesale distribution of bottled water products in Guangzhou and other parts of China.

“We also export our mineral water products under the brand name ACILIS by Spritzer to the United Kingdom and Netherlands,” it shared.

At present, Spritzer said, it is taking prudent measures to monitor and manage the higher input and operating costs which are primarily in Malaysia. “We will focus on sustaining our sales revenue and to safeguard our market share in the bottled water industry.”

PUTRAJAYA: Buat julung-julung kalinya makmal bergerak Jabatan Kimia Malaysia (KIMIA Malaysia) yang direka khas bagi memberi respons segera terhadap bencana atau ancaman bahan kimia dipertontonkan kepada orang ramai pada sambutan Hari Kebangsaan 2025 di Dataran Putrajaya, hari ini.

Makmal bergerak yang mampu menganalisa sampel bahan kimia di lapangan itu, aset pertama seumpanya di Asia yang berteknologi tinggi membuat kemunculan pertama menerusi perarakan kontinjen KIMIA Malaysia diketuai Muhammad Yazid Ibrahim dan diiringi 60 pegawai kimia.

Ketua Pengarah Jabatan KIMIA Malaysia Marhayani Md Saad berkata aset itu yang diperoleh menerusi Rancangan Malaysia Ke-12 (RMK12) bagi memperkasakan Pasukan Tindakan Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNe) yang ditubuhkan pada Oktober 2022.

"Jadi selepas itu kita usulkan kepada kerajaan untuk kita buat perolehan makmal ini untuk membolehkan makmal itu sendiri pergi ke lapangan, mengambil serta menganalisa sampel untuk mendapatkan keputusan yang cepat," katanya kepada Bernama selepas perbarisan sambutan Hari Kebangsaan 2025.

Mengulas lanjut, Marhayani berkata makmal bergerak berkenaan boleh memuatkan kira-kira lima ahli kimia pada satu-satu masa dan dilengkapi bilik analisa, bilik kelengkapan, dron dan alat pengesan second sight stand off gas cloud detector (Bertin) yang boleh mengesan kepulan asap bahan kimia dalam radius lima kilometer.
