The real meaning of T20 in Malaysia

If your income is RM11K per month, you are qualified to be a T20. But what does that mean?

First lets look what disposable income a T20 has. At RM11K per month, it is RM132k per year, and you will be taxed about RM14K, that will leave you with about RM100K.

If you have to contribute EPF, then there will be another 11% deduction on your gross, that's about another RM14K, so what remains will be around RM86K.

That means around RM7.2K per month.

And since the amount is a household income, so that's including the income from both husband and wife. And assuming the family size is a typical couple + 2 children, there will be 4 persons in a single household. That means each person has a share of RM1.8K for spending, that's assuming for simplicity sake, no monthly fixed installments for cars, house, and the need to pay rental etc.

So lets be generous and say this RM1.8K is fully available to pay for the monthly variable living cost, such as food, transport, personal expenses etc. At first glance, it is quite plenty. Assuming each person eat 3 meals a day, and each meals are usually mixed rice, at average RM7, each person has to spend RM7x3x30 = RM630 per month, still plenty of money left to pamper oneself from time to time. But then again, is eating mixed rice daily considered a premium lifestyle?

So now let's upgrade the meal cost to let's say Nando meal level, which is around RM21 per meal in average. Now each person has to spend RM21x3x30 = RM1890, that has already exceeded the total allowance per month. So it is quite apparent that at RM11K per month, a typical family of 4 at most can afford to eat Nando every meal only. Is eating Nando every meal considered a premium lifestyle? I think most people will say it is only slightly better than peasant level only. If anyone objects this approach and claims Nando is overpriced shitty meal in the first place, then let's look at other alternative like other restaurant such as TGIF, Morganfields, Madam Kwan, Dragon-I, Chili's, Tony Roma etc, they are all more or less at the same price level. And no way we will consider them as truly high class food befitting for the rich.

Hence the conclusion is clear, T20 is not rich. It is only slightly better than the poor and the average. The average which is M40 will probably have to settle for Fast Food level which is currently normally priced between RM10-RM15. While the truly poor B40 is better off just cook the food at home.

Want to enjoy truly high class food, need to be T5 or better, so it will be too wasteful at your level.
