The conference is entitled

The Twenty-Second International Conference on Australasian Bats.

The conference is to be held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea from March 17 to 21, 2008. This conference is expected to attract experts from around the world in Biology, Infectious Diseases, Conservation, Bio-diversity etc. The conference organisers want their site in four parts:
A program page that lists the sessions over the five days of the conference. This page will also list the invited speakers of the conference providing a picture of each speaker and the title of the talk they will be giving. There should be a session timetable.
An accomodation page. A page listing the suggested hotels for the conference attendees to stay at while at the conference. Prices should be quoted on this page.
A tourist page outlining all the things that a visitor to the area can do while not at the conference.
The site-map section. Normally this would be a simplified list of the main sections of any site - an extended table of contents as an aid to navigation.
For these assignments the site-map section will be used by the student as a site-map for the marker - pointing the marker to the main pages where required elements may be found.

Assignment One
The first assignment is to set up the basic structure of the web site. Assignment Two will add extra features to the basic structure of Assignment One. Please keep in mind the requirements of Assignment Two when designing your site for Assignment One.
Design
The basic design of the site should be the following:
There should be an entrance page to the site. This should be simple but convey the purpose of the site clearly.
From the entrance or welcome page there should be links to the major sections of the site.
The conference program section.
The accomodation section.
The tourist section.
The site-map section to be used by the student to document the solution for the marker. Required elements must appear in the other sections of the site as well as being documented in this section.
The design of individual pages must be consistent across the site. This means ALL pages (the site-map section as well).
Required elements must be included in the site in a consistent way and be relevant to the page they are in.

Required Tasks
In the directory ~/CSC2406/html/ass1 create four directories that will contain the documents and images etc. for the four main sections of the site:
program

This directory will contain the pages, images, scripts etc. pertaining to the conference program.
accomodation

This directory will contain the pages, images, scripts etc. pertaining to accomodation at the conference.
tourist

This directory will contain the pages, images, scripts etc. pertaining to the tourist information.
sitemap

This directory will be used by you to document your solutions to the assignments.
Your site should contain the following elements
Images

Your site must contain each of the following-
A conference logo which should appear on every page. The image for the logo should have a transparent background.
A Client Side or Server Side image map.
An Animated GIF.
Cascading Style Sheets

All font changes, all text colors, background colors, H1 to H6 elements, BODY element etc. should be modified using only style sheets.
This means that HTML elements should be modified using style sheets where possible, not by HTML attributes. For example - do not use the attributes of the BODY element to change background color etc. but style commands.

The site should be readable and navigable with style sheets turned off.

Page Layout

Use either CSS2 or tables to format each page of the site. (Those that choose to use CSS2 commands to format each page will be given bonus marks as CSS2 is harder to use and will require more effort. Also browsers are not consistent in their implementation of CSS2 commands. So you must use either the Mozilla or Firefox browsers to test your site as these will be the browsers used to mark your assignment.)
Style Guide

When designing the site and individual pages follow the suggestions outlined in the style guide module in the study book and the style guide in the resources directory.
Create a welcoming page for the site (in the top level assignment directory). This welcoming page should be simple but eye catching. With basic information about the purpose of the site.
Create at least two pages for each of the other main sections of the site:
Program section
Accomodation Section
Tourist Section
Either write all the pages as XHTML or use the program tidy to convert your HTML into XHTML. This will require reading section 6.10.1 of the Study Book.
Create a Site-map page which will contain the following:
Links to the pages containing the required items in the main part of the site.
Descriptions, with examples from your site - of all the Required images and Image maps.
Explanations how you made your images.
All the component images of the animated gif displayed. A description how you created the component images, and how you created the final animated image.
A description of the rationale for your page design - That is, using the Style Guide Module and the style guide in the resources directory - explain your design. This should be done in point form - each point a specific design decision.
The Site-map directory is to be used to document you solution to the assignments. All the required elements must be in the main part of the site not just on the site-map page. The site-map page must also conform to the overall design criterion you are using for the main site.

Marking Scheme:
Transparent Logo 6
Animated Gif 6
Image Map 7
Cascading Style Sheets 12
Used Tables for Formatting 5
Used CSS2 for Formatting 10
Used XHTML 4
Overall Appearence 5
All links work 5
Maximum (out of 50 with tables) 50
Maximum (out of 50 with CSS2) 55

Notes:
Your assignment is supposed to look like a real site - not an assignment (Except for the Site-Map section.)
Use your imagination. Don't be frightened to make information up. The veracity of the information on the site will not be checked. Use the Internet.
Make certain it is clear from perusing your site where all the required elements are. If it is not clear the marker may miss required elements and mark you down accordingly. Have links on the site-map page to the required element in the main part of the site. The required elements Must appear in the main part of the assignment not just in the site-map section.
The "welcome" page for your assignment, that is the first page to be viewed should be called index.html or index.htm. This ensures when marking the assignments they all have the same entry point. These are also the default files the server looks for in a directory when a URL points to a directory.
All your assignment documents should be contained in ONE directory tree. The top directory ass1 has been made for this purpose.
All links should be relative - that is they should NOT contain
A machine name, or
start with a slash.
To ensure that all links on your pages are relative try the following -

Start your web browser and load the assignment top page using the Open Page pull down menu item. This will load the page directly off disk into the browser. Now check that no links are broken.
Do not have your server running when you do this.

Relative links should NOT contain a server name or start with a / (slash)!

Please experiment with the tar command to ensure you have used it correctly.
It is your responsibility to ensure that the tar file you submit is correct.

If you use FTP to transfer the TAR file between machines, make sure that the transfer is done in BINARY mode.
This assignment must work on a machine running Debian GNU/Linux using the supplied copy of Mozilla or Firefox as the browser. All URLs must be relative.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Added on June 7, 2007, 10:07 pmquestion 2

In Assignment One, you set up the basic design of the site, now you must expand the functionality of the site by adding server side scripts.
Design
All new pages created for this assignment must conform to the design criterion established for Assignment One.
All the pages you created in Assignment One should also be present in Assignment Two not just the new pages or modified pages.

Tasks
Conference Registration Page
Create a directory called registration.
Create a static XHTML page for conference registration and place the page in the registration directory.
Add a link to the top page of the site to this page.
The registration page is a form that asks the client for his or her registration details. Information required for conference registration will be:
Full Name
Contact Email Address
Name of the Institution
Credit Card type
Credit Card Number
Expiry Date of Credit Card
Use the appropriate XHTML INPUT types. The TEXT input type is not the most appropriate type in all cases.
The POST method should be used to send the data to the script.
Input error checking must be done by the CGI script. (But not the validity of the Credit Card number)
One CGI script will be written that will take the information from the page and output it to a well formed XML text file in the subdirectory registration/payment. There should be one registration per XML file.

The XML registration files in registration/payment should use the contact email address as the filename (Assume that every person registering will possess a unique email address.)

A simple way to test if a file already exists is to use
fptr = fopen(filename,"r");
if( fptr != NULL ) {
fclose(fptr);
...the file exists
}

A DTD file should be supplied in the registration/payment directory that can be used to validate the payment files.
The XML files in the registration/payment directory should be password protected from download. The username/password pair that should be used to protect the files should be `payments/1234'. For this assignment place the password file in the registration directory. This file should also be protected from accidental or malicious download by anyone by the appropriate configuration directives.
If the registration information is accepted a polite message should be returned to the client telling them they have successfully registered.
If the registration is not accepted an informative error message must be supplied explaining why it has not been accepted.
Paper title and abstract submission page.
A page to list all the papers to be presented or submit a title and abstract of a paper to be presented.
Create a directory called papers. All files for this section are to be placed in this directory.
Create one CGI script to dynamically display papers or accept papers.
Add a link to the top page of the site to this script.
Everything following is to be dynamically created by one CGI script.
Without input the script should display a default page that offers two choices:
To list all the titles and authors of all the submitted papers to date and
a form for paper and abstract submission.
Submission Option on the default page:
The form on the default submission page should have three fields
Field to enter the names of all of the authors.
Field to enter the name of the principal author. This is the person who will be presenting the paper at the conference. The principal author's name should be one of the names in the first field.
Field to enter the contact email address of the principal author.
Field to enter the title of the paper.
A text-area to enter the abstract of the paper.
The POST method should be used to send the data to the script.
The CGI script will accept the form information and write the abstract of the paper to a text file. One file - one abstract. The name of the file must be unique (See Notes). The remaining information will be appended to a text file. Each line of the file will contain the principal author, the authors, the title and the name of the file containing the abstract.
Only people who have been registered for the conference should be allowed to present a paper. If the principal author has not registered for the conference the script should not accept the submission, return a polite message and a link to the registration page.

Use the email address of the principal author to check if a registration/payment file exists with that name.

A simple way to test if a file already exists is to use
fptr = fopen(filename,"r");
if( fptr != NULL ) {
fclose(fptr);
...the file exists
}

Input error checking must be done by the CGI script.
List Option on the default submission page:
When this option is selected from the default page the script should list the authors and titles of all the accepted papers.
Each listed paper should have a link to the abstract of that paper.
If the abstract link is selected then the script will display ALL the information about that one paper. That is - the principal author, the authors, the title and the abstract.
The GET method should be used to tell the script which paper to display.
Marking Scheme:
Registration Section 25
Submission Section 45
Design of new pages 10
Error Checking of Scripts 20
Total 100

Notes:
Reread the Notes from Assignment One.
All new pages created for this assignment, and that includes dynamic pages created by CGI scripts must be in the same design style as all the pages in Assignment One
CGI scripts are to be written in C. No other language will be accepted. The reason for this is that we can only support one language and all students should have had experience with C.
The libCGI library in C is supplied to simplify the task of writing scripts.

Scripts should be well commented.

Study the example scripts supplied with the server and those that can be found in the practicals.
A simple way to test if a file already exists is to use
fptr = fopen(filename,"r");
if( fptr != NULL ) {
fclose(fptr);
...the file exists
}

A simple way to create a unique filename is to use the process identification number of the running script. For example
#include <unistd.h>
char filename[6];
sprintf(filename,"%d",(int)getpid());

Please note that for a busy site this is NOT the best way of constructing a unique filename - the process id can recycle easily within a day.

This assignment must work on a Debian GNU/Linux machine running Mozilla or Firefox. All URLs must be relative. All CGI scripts must be handed in as executables and as source. CGI script executables should have filenames ending in .cgi so that they can run in any directory.
Do Not use global configuration directives as the directives will Not be submitted with the assignment. Directory configuration files should be used in the directories that require them.
Some of the file configuration directives in directive configuration files must be absolute. This is the only place where absolute pathnames should ever be used.
The password file must be in the document tree so that it is submitted with your assignment.
Please note that on a commercial site a password file would NEVER be placed in the document tree.

[addedon]June 7, 2007, 10:07 pm[/addedon]question 2

A simple way to test if a file already exists is to use
fptr = fopen(filename,"r");
if( fptr != NULL ) {
fclose(fptr);
...the file exists
}

A simple way to test if a file already exists is to use
fptr = fopen(filename,"r");
if( fptr != NULL ) {
fclose(fptr);
...the file exists
}

A simple way to test if a file already exists is to use
fptr = fopen(filename,"r");
if( fptr != NULL ) {
fclose(fptr);
...the file exists
}

A simple way to create a unique filename is to use the process identification number of the running script. For example
#include <unistd.h>
char filename[6];
sprintf(filename,"%d",(int)getpid());
