BERAK:Tanco hits limit down for third straight day

KUALA LUMPUR: Tanco Holdings Bhd shares hit limit down for the third consecutive trading day today, prompting Bursa Malaysia to suspend intraday short-selling (IDSS) of the stock for a third straight session.

The stock has come under intense selling pressure this week, falling to 20 sen today from a recent high of RM1.76 recorded on June 3.

In a filing, Bursa Malaysia said the suspension would remain in effect for the rest of today's trading session after Tanco's share price fell by more than 15 per cent, or 15 sen, from its reference price.

The exchange said short-selling of Tanco shares under the IDSS framework will resume at 8.30 am tomorrow.

Earlier today, Tanco shares plunged 30 sen, or 60 per cent, to 20 sen, with 206.24 million shares traded.

On Monday, Bursa Malaysia Securities Bhd issued an unusual market activity query to the property developer following the sharp decline in its share price.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Tanco's indirect wholly-owned subsidiary, Tanco Dot Com Sdn Bhd, entered into a memorandum of understanding with Hong Kong-based China Mobile International Ltd to explore the development of a 50-megawatt information technology-load data centre in Negeri Sembilan.

Pas ends cooperation with Bersatu

KUALA LUMPUR: Pas has announced the termination of its political cooperation with Bersatu following a special meeting of the party's Central Working Committee today.

In a statement, party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang said the committee endorsed a decision made by the syura council on June 2 concerning policy, religious considerations and public interest aspects of Pas' political cooperation, based on the principle of Muslim unity.

He said the meeting also reviewed the current position and direction of Pas–Bersatu ties through reports, studies and assessments of the current political landscape.

PASIR GUDANG: Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has warned contractors involved in the multi-million-ringgit Pasir Gudang Expressway (FT17) upgrading works not to waste public funds.

While the project has reached 83 per cent physical progress, Onn Hafiz expressed dissatisfaction with the supporting infrastructure, including the smart traffic light systems.

During a surprise site visit yesterday, the menteri besar grilled contractors over the lack of timers on the signals.

"Where is the timer? That is a dumb traffic light. Smart ones come with a timer that alerts motorists of the waiting time," he was heard saying.

Onn Hafiz said the 10km project, stretching from the Bandar Seri Alam and Taman Rinting interchange to Pasir Gudang, must deliver a real impact by easing long-standing congestion along the industrial corridor.

The upgrading works include widening the highway from four to six lanes.

To date, 6.4km of the upgraded stretch have been opened to the public. The remaining 3.6km of the main alignment is expected to be fully opened by August, with final finishing works and infrastructure coordination slated for completion by November.

The project is a key effort to improve connectivity between residential areas and industrial zones in Pasir Gudang.

During the visit, Onn Hafiz also inspected the smart traffic light system enhancement at the Taman Kota Puteri and Taman Teluk Tropicana junction along the Permas–Pasir Gudang Expressway.

"The system is designed to improve signal coordination and optimise vehicle flow at critical intersections during peak hours.

"This initiative is to strengthen traffic management and ensure smoother movement. We will continue to strengthen the road network for the comfort and safety of the people," he said.

He added that the state government remains committed to ensuring public funds are spent efficiently and that all infrastructure projects deliver tangible benefits.

KUALA LUMPUR: Several roads around Jalan Bukit Bintang will be closed and diverted in stages tonight for the Quranic Madani programme, "Night Reset: Bersatu Dalam Saf @ Bukit Bintang."

The event, from 8.30pm to 11pm in front of Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, is expected to draw large crowds from around the capital and nearby areas.

Kuala Lumpur Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa said the closures and diversions would be carried out in stages to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety.

"The affected route is Jalan Bukit Bintang and the closures will remain in place until 5am on May 9," he said.

He said the roads would be reopened in stages after the programme ends, depending on traffic conditions and the situation at the location.

Motorists have been advised to avoid the affected routes and to plan their journey using alternative roads.

"Road users are also encouraged to use public transportation such as the LRT, MRT, Monorail or e-hailing services to help reduce congestion in the city centre.

"Please follow instructions from traffic police personnel on duty at the location and practise courteous and patient driving throughout the road closure period," he said.

IWK offers fertiliser alternatives to smallholders amid global supply disruptions

KUALA LUMPUR: Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) Sdn Bhd is positioning its biosolids-based organic fertiliser as a sustainable and cost-effective solution to support Malaysia's agriculture sector, particularly smallholders facing rising input costs.

Developed from treated sewage sludge, the fertiliser contains essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, while also helping to improve soil condition.

Studies conducted by IWK's research arm found that it enhanced plant growth and soil quality across several crops, with no heavy metals detected, indicating it is safe for agricultural use.

Field trials have also shown encouraging results. Heat-stressed coconut trees recovered and resumed fruiting after consistent application, while Napier grass recorded improved vegetative growth and increased biomass production.

IWK chief executive officer Narendran Maniam said the solution could significantly ease financial pressure on farmers.

"In the coconut farm trial, application once every two weeks resulted in an estimated 68 per cent reduction in fertiliser costs," he said, adding that the product delivers nutrients efficiently while supporting long-term soil health.

The fertiliser has also been deemed permissible by national and state Islamic authorities, subject to safety conditions, further supporting its adoption within the local market.

Plantation and commodities minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad said the government is working to secure new import channels to stabilise fertiliser supply. However, Narendran noted that local alternatives will continue to play an important role.

"It supports soil conservation, reduces reliance on chemical fertilisers and promotes a circular economy. The challenge now is public acceptance," he said.

The development comes as global fertiliser supply disruptions continue to affect Malaysia's agriculture sector.

The country produces only about 39 per cent of its fertiliser needs, with export restrictions from China and disruptions along key routes such as the Strait of Hormuz driving up costs. Local producers have reportedly halted new orders as raw material prices surged by up to 150 per cent, placing additional strain on farmers.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof had earlier warned that rising input costs could have wider implications.

"When input costs rise, it triggers a domino effect, leading to global food price inflation. Our dependence on external supply chains makes us vulnerable," he said during the launch of the National Food Security Policy 2030 in January.

KUANTAN: Biking enthusiasts are set to converge on the state capital for the RXZ Fighter 3.0 gathering, which will be held at Serambi Teruntum in Tanjung Lumpur on May 1.

Serambi Teruntum hosted the inaugural edition in 2024, which drew around 50,000 participants, before the gathering was moved to Teluk Cempedak last year, where some 70,000 riders turned up.

Pahang Communications and Multimedia, Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Fadzli Mohamad Kamal said Kuantan will once again play host to the two-day RXZ gathering, which begins tomorrow.

"I welcome RXZ fans from all over the country to Kuantan in conjunction with RXZ Fighter 3.0. Various interesting activities will be held throughout the event at Serambi Teruntum," he said in a video shared on Facebook today.

Fadzli advised the biking community travelling from across the country to Kuantan to prioritise safety at all times.

The event, scheduled to begin after Friday prayers, will include religious talks, bike-handling skills demonstrations by FIM MiniGP riders, an airbrush painting competition and performances by local artistes.

It marks the third time the event is being held in Kuantan, despite calls to host it in other districts, largely due to its potential positive spillover effects on tourism and the local economy.

Pahang Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Superintendent Brodie Ak Brangka has urged participants to observe road rules.

Fire guts electric motorcycle assembly factory in Sungai Buloh

KUALA LUMPUR: A fire destroyed about 80 per cent of an electric motorcycle assembly factory in Sungai Buloh today, but no injuries were reported.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said the department received an emergency call at 6.49pm reporting a blaze at the factory on Jalan Industri 4 and arrived at the scene at 7.05pm.

He said the operation is being led by operations commander Narmizi Hamzah, with the Sungai Buloh Fire Station supported by teams from the Bukit Jelutong, Damansara, Selayang and Taman Tun Dr Ismail fire stations.

"The fire has affected about 80 per cent of the 100 by 300 sq ft structure.

Firefighting operations are still ongoing," he said in a statement.

A total of 28 firefighters have been deployed to the scene.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two company directors and a non-governmental organisation deputy chairman were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on suspicion of misappropriating about RM230 million in zakat funds.

Sources said two men, aged in their 50s and 60s, were picked up between 3pm and 5pm in an operation by Selangor MACC around the Klang Valley today.

Another man in his 50s was detained earlier about 2pm when he turned up to give his statement at the commission's Selangor office.

During the operation, MACC also seized 18 luxury vehicles, including a Porsche, Mercedes, Range Rover, and Honda Civic Type R, as well as houses and other properties estimated to be worth about RM11 million.

Other assets confiscated include cash and branded watches.

In addition, 33 bank accounts containing about RM120 million have been frozen as part of the investigation.

"Preliminary investigations showed that all suspects are believed to have conspired in the offence between 2018 and 2024.

"Investigators also found that the NGO deputy chairman had allegedly transferred the RM230 million into his company's accounts for investment purposes as well as for personal use," the source said.

The probe is focused on elements of misappropriation of public funds, as the NGO involved is understood to receive public donations intended to assist those in need.

Selangor MACC director Mohd Azwan Ramli confirmed the arrests and said the case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009.

Azwan added that all suspects are expected to be brought before the magistrate's court in Shah Alam tomorrow for remand proceedings
