KOTA KINABALU: A man who left his job as supervising engineer to sell buns from his car boot last year is now providing jobs to those who lost their income due to the pandemic.

Ridzuan Jamal, 28, said he now earned enough to open his own shop after selling the buns at mere RM1 each for less than six months.

The newly-married entrepreneur was featured in the New Straits Times last year. He reportedly sold about 1,000 buns daily in Penampang and Putatan.

Despite the affordable pricing of the bun, he said he actually earned more than his previous job.

"Now, my bakery has nine workers who recently lost their jobs, and also newly-graduated youngsters.

"There are also three secondary school students working as part timers to help their parents whose incomes are affected by the pandemic, apart from getting work experience," he said, adding that his workers' basic salary ranged between RM900 and RM1,200.

Ridzuan, who is only focusing on expanding his business, said he expected to recruit more workers both for the bun production and agents to sell the products.

He is targeting 15 agents but now only has eight to cover Sepanggar, Inanam, KK, Putatan, Papar, Kinarut, Kimanis and Telipok.

"I am concentrating on having as many agents as possible to even cover more districts from Tuaran to Menumbok.

"Therefore, I need more people to increase the supply to help others to survive through employment and sales especially during the movement control order now," he said.

Here why Israeli concerned over Pfizer vaccine..

More than 12,400 in Israel were reportedly infected after accepting Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine, which led to doubts over the vaccine's efficacy, despite the reported 95 percent efficacy in Phase III clinical trials.

This can be a sign that the vaccine's efficacy is not necessarily the same as data from experiments, which is affected by many elements such as the experiment environment and the population tested on, some experts said.

Israel's health ministry tested 189,000 people after they received Pfizer's vaccine and 6.6 percent of the people, including 69 who had received two shots, still tested positive for COVID-19, according to media reports.

A single dose of Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine appeared "less effective than we had thought," and also lower than Pfizer had suggested, Israeli coronavirus commissioner Nachman Ash previously told media on Tuesday.

Pfizer said that a single dose of its vaccine is about 52 percent effective, media reported.

Feng Duojia, president of the China Vaccine Industry Association, told the Global Times on Thursday that it is possible that vaccine recipients got infected before they developed immunity.

Instead of preventing recipients completely from infections, the key functions of vaccination are to reduce the incidence rate or prevent recipients from getting serious symptoms, Feng explained.

Normally it takes 14 days for vaccines to build effective immunity in recipients' bodies.

According to media reports, within two weeks after the first dose, recipients in Israel show similar infection rates as those who have not received shots. But those vaccinated started to show 33 percent fewer new infections than the others after the second dose.

The most effective way to prevent coronavirus infections is still physical protective measures, like wearing masks and protective suits, experts noted.
Datuk Who Assaulted A Couple Has Been Arrested

A Datuk has been arrested for intimidating and slapping a couple in a steamboat restaurant in Petaling Jaya, Selangor

According to New Straits Times, the police arrested the 42-year-old Datuk, along with another 39-year-old suspect, in Mutiara Damansara at about 3.40pm yesterday, 14 January.

Selangor Criminal Investigations Department chief ACP Datuk Fadzil Ahmat confirmed that one of the suspects holds a Datukship and that he has a criminal record for criminal intimidation.

The Star reported that the police record lodged against him was dated 2019.

Other than investigating the incident, the police will also find out whether the suspects are involved in any gang-related activities

The police will be submitting a remand application to investigate the suspects' backgrounds.

Prior to the arrest, Petaling Jaya district police chief ACP Nik Ezanee Nik Faisal revealed that the incident started because the suspects were told off for talking too loudly in the restaurant.

Following the complaint, he said one of the suspects hit the victim with his hand and was suspected of slapping a female patron at the restaurant before leaving.

"Both suspects, who were drunk, attacked the person who made the complaint," Nik Ezanee said.

However, the initial police report states that the woman whom the suspect had slapped is a waitress

The Star noted that there is a discrepancy in reporting, saying Chinese vernacular newspapers reported that the person whom the suspect slapped was the victim's girlfriend.
