Virut virus!

Hi guys ,

Okay so it appears that my PC had been infected with Virut virus.

I'd wanna do a full reformat..however i need to back up my files...

According from what i'd read at the net...it says that it only infects .exe and .scr extensions...

My question is ,

Would it be safe for me to plug in an external hd to put my backup (exclude .exe and .scr files) into it?
Will the virus jump into my external hd during backup?

What are the methods you guys would suggest to backup my files?
