PETALING JAYA: How many plates of nasi lemak can a typical Malaysian salary buy?

Fewer than before the pandemic, according to Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) data.

From 2019 to 2025, the country’s median monthly wage rose by 20%, from RM2,442 to a record high of RM2,940.

But the average price of nasi lemak went up even faster, rising 32% from RM2.81 to RM3.70.

This means that a worker earning the median salary could buy 869 plates of nasi lemak each month in 2019, compared with only 795 in 2025.

That’s 74 fewer plates, or an 8.5% decline.

While nobody is likely going to spend their entire monthly salary on nasi lemak, the example illustrates the declining affordability of the popular food item in recent years.

And it’s not just nasi lemak that has become less affordable.

From roti canai to chicken rice, DOSM’s figures show that prices of at least 12 other common food items rose faster than the median wage between 2019 to 2025 (see graphic).

For Malaysians who eat out regularly, the squeeze on household budgets is real.

Content writer Ho Jia Wen, who often eats out due to her busy work schedule, said even economy rice, her usual budget option, now costs up to RM12 for a plate with meat and vegetables.

“Previously, we could get it for less than RM10, but not anymore.

“I always eat out for lunch, and with prices like these, I spend at least RM400 a month and that is only for one meal a day,” said the 27-year-old from Petaling Jaya.

She said she had tried cooking dinner at home, but groceries had also become more expensive.

“If you compare the cost of mixed rice with cooking at home, there is not much difference,” she added.

Freelance religious teacher Raihanah said food prices at pasar malam had also risen sharply.

“Food at roadside stalls and pasar malam now costs about as much as food as restaurants.

“Even fried chicken is sold for RM10 at pasar malam these days,” said the 33-year-old from Klang.

She said than when eating out, she would opt to eat at restaurants instead, as the prices were similar.

Marketing executive Angela Peter, who frequents pasar malam every week, said she had noticed food prices becoming more expensive each year.

“Even a bowl of curry laksa is around RM10 to RM11. Rice with vegetables and meat costs about RM12 to RM13 now.

“It defeats the purpose of going to pasar malam if prices are almost the same as at restaurants.

"The appeal used to be that you could buy many things to eat at affordable prices, but that is no longer the case as prices keep going up,” she said.

She said she spent around RM200 a month on food at pasar malam, despite visiting only once or twice a week.

“At work, I try my best to bring food from home.

“It is the only way I can keep my food expenses down and save money each month,” said the 27-year-old from Cheras.

SEPANG, Oct 4 — Motorsports Associations of Malaysia (MAM) president Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir believes Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has the capability and experience to host F1 again should Malaysia have the opportunity to do so in the future.

Mokhzani said SIC’s experience in organising F1 remained intact, allowing the circuit’s management to ensure the event runs smoothly.

However, he said any decision to bring F1 back on a permanent basis would ultimately depend on the government, with the economic impact of hosting the race needing to be assessed.

“In terms of the circuit’s capability, we can do it. As for the financial capability and so on, I am sure that if we look at the economic impact and multiplier effect, it would be significant.”

“Everyone can benefit, to some extent, from what F1 actually brings to Malaysia,” he said on the sidelines of the Formula 1 (F1) Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia 2026 at SIC here today.

Mokhzani said the economic benefits were not confined to the circuit as visitors would also stay in Kuala Lumpur and travel to other destinations.

While MAM would always want F1 to continue in Malaysia, he said the financial resources required to stage the event meant government support might be necessary.

Asked what contract formula would be suitable for Malaysia to host F1 again, Mokhzani said a five-year ‘3+2’ contract would be the ideal arrangement, providing greater certainty for organisers, fans and the Formula 1 management.

“It is usually a five-year contract. With a 3+2 arrangement, we want spectators who plan to come to be able to make arrangements. In the first year, those who have never been to Malaysia can see what the country has to offer.

“Then, in the second year, they can plan where to stay and where to go before and after the F1 race. This would also make it easier for the F1 management to schedule our race,” he said.

Mokhzani said the overwhelming response to this year’s race also demonstrated strong appetite for F1 among Malaysian fans, with 105,000 tickets reportedly sold.

Asked whether he was surprised by the turnout, he attributed the response to fans making up for the absence of F1 from Malaysia since 2017.

“I was told that 105,000 tickets had been sold and I was surprised to see people turning up even for practice on Friday. Yesterday’s qualifying session was also packed and today, we expect even more people,” he said.

In July, Formula 1 confirmed Malaysia as the host of the Gulf Air Bahrain GP from Oct 2 to 4, following an agreement between Formula 1, the International Automobile Federation (FIA) and the governments of Malaysia and Bahrain.

The agreement kept the Bahrain GP on the 2026 F1 calendar after the race was cancelled earlier this season due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

We thought Chinese companies could save us from the DRAM crisis, but they're charging just as much as the big three

For most of the past year or two, PC builders that have been priced out of DDR5 have had one name to squarely pin their hopes and dreams of cheap memory to. CXMT, China's largest DRAM manufacturer, was supposed to be the fourth supplier that broke up the big three: Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. The thought was, once CXMT ramps up their own manufacturing to fill the void that those companies left in hopes of securing the AI bag, cheaper memory would become available for consumers. It's a nice thought, but the truth is, CXMT is pricing like the companies it was supposed to undercut, and if you were holding off on a build in hopes that Chinese memory would rescue your budget, you'll be waiting for a long time.

Performance isn't an issue with CXMT-made RAM, and that's been proven in real-world tests. Hardware Unboxed purchased a KingBank 32GB DDR5-6000 CL36 kit in Australia earlier this year, where kits with CXMT chips were among the cheapest DDR5 on the shelf. In gaming, it kept pace with a premium G.Skill kit built on SK Hynix chips.

The KingBank kit sold for about 599 AUD, against roughly 649 AUD for comparable kits using Samsung, SK Hynix, or Micron chips. That's a saving of under 8%, at a time when the same class of kit had multiplied in price over just a few months. Pricing seemed more aggressive when these kits first went on sale, but they've shifted within weeks of going on sale. If you looked at headlines from even earlier, the prices that were being floated were a fraction of the going rate, but buyers never actually saw those prices at retail.

CXMT makes the chips, but someone else makes the actual sticks of RAM

CXMT manufactures DRAM chips, and it sells some finished modules of its own, mostly for servers. The kits most builders would buy, from brands like KingBank and Gloway, come from module makers. They buy those chips, add the PCB and power management IC, bin the chips, and set a retail price with their own margin on top.

A retail kit can only be as cheap as the chips inside it. If CXMT sells its chips at market rate, module makers have no deep discount to pass along. The most they can do is trim their own margin, which is roughly what the Australian pricing looked like, and CXMT's own module prices shows where their priorities are.

Reuters reported in July that CXMT had been charging more than Samsung's roughly $1,240 per unit for comparable 64GB DDR5 server modules, and that it held firm when Huawei pushed for relief. Those are registered server DIMMs, not the unbuffered sticks in a gaming PC, so this isn't a like-for-like consumer comparison, but it is a clear signal of how the company prices when it has leverage.

Also, buying a Chinese brand doesn't even guarantee Chinese DRAM. The KingBank kit Hardware Unboxed tested lists CXMT as one of several possible chip suppliers.

A company will undercut a market for one of a few reasons, but it's usually either because it has a cost advantage it can pass along, or it wants to buy market share. CXMT doesn't have either motive right now.

On cost, CXMT is actually behind, not ahead. Export controls have locked it out of EUV lithography, so it builds on older process nodes than Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. By analyst estimates, that leaves it with a higher cost per bit than the incumbents. Selling cheaper chips would cut into margins it has less room to give up.

On market share, CXMT doesn't need to buy what it's already being handed. It simply sells what it makes, and reportedly reserves a large share of its output for domestic customers like Huawei, and now, it has public shareholders to answer to since its record-setting Shanghai listing in July. In a shortage, the market rate is the rational price, and that's what CXMT is charging right now.

CXMT is building at a remarkable pace. Its three current fabs have roughly 300,000 wafers per month of combined capacity, and it's expected to end 2026 at around 350,000, which is close to Micron's output. The new fabs underway in Shanghai and Hefei could push it past 600,000, which will increase supply significantly in China. Once enough supply reaches the market, prices will naturally fall, regardless of the brand on the chip or module.

Indirectly, this can also affect prices in North America and Europe, because for every order CXMT fills for a Chinese tech manufacturer, that will free up supply for everyone else, in theory.

Don't expect CXMT to deliver that supply

Prices are still rising today

TrendForce's latest forecast, published at the end of September, still has conventional DRAM contract prices rising 10% to 15% quarter over quarter in Q4 2026, as suppliers keep prioritizing advanced capacity for server products. Contract pricing isn't retail pricing, but it's what module makers pay, and right now that price is only going up. TrendForce also expects the share of capacity going to PC memory to shrink further in 2027, which doesn't bode well at all.

Meanwhile, most of that new output from CXMT is expected to stay in China anyway. In North America, CXMT-based kits remain hard to find at retail, even though every major motherboard vendor now validates them. When relief does come, it will come from the whole industry, not just one company starting a pricing war.

CXMT is not going to save your PC build alone

DRAM is going to stay expensive for the foreseeable future, so if you need RAM now and are holding out for CXMT to save you, don't hold your breath. CXMT-based kits are a perfectly good choice where you can find them at a discount, and the benchmarks back that up, but they're not a reason to put a build on hold

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said currently, close to four in 10 members are now on track to reach the benchmark under the EPF's Retirement Income Adequacy framework.

"This is progress, but too many Malaysians remain at risk of outliving their savings during a retirement that may last 20 to 25 years," he said in his keynote address at the EPF's International Social Wellbeing Conference (ISWC) 2026 here today.

Anwar's speech was read by Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

Also present were Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh and EPF chief executive officer Ahmad Zulqarnain Onn.

The Prime Minister said coverage was also a challenge, as millions of Malaysians work outside conventional formal employment, while the country's social protection system was designed largely around it.

Anwar stressed that the country's systems must evolved alongside it as the nature of work changes.

"There is another reality we must confront. For policymakers, retirement may be a 30-year horizon. For a household managing food, rent and school expenses, the horizon may be the end of the week.

"Asking people to prepare for 2048 while they are uncertain about next month is not simply a question of financial literacy. It is a question of financial capacity," said Anwar.

He noted that retirement security began with income, decent work and the ability to save consistently and retirement agenda must move together with wage agenda.

Anwar said the government had set aside RM1.26 billion for the welfare of senior citizens, reaching 180,000 older Malaysians, while expanding activity centres to ensure that growing older does not have to mean growing isolated.

On another note, Anwar said Malaysia requires a graduated system of care -- from community support, nutritious meals and home assistance to day care, home nursing and residential aged care for those who are frail or living with dementia.

He stressed that access should be based on need, not only on ability to pay.

"The government must lead by setting standards, strengthening safety nets and ensuring essential services. But lasting success requires shared commitment," said Anwar.

Meanwhile, EPF chairman Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali said preparing for the future calls for a shared effort across government, businesses, communities, families and individuals and each has a role in creating the conditions for people to live well at every age.

"This begins with recognising the experience, knowledge and contributions that people bring throughout their lives, alongside the support they may need as they grow older. Our institutions and systems must evolve to enable people to work, learn, contribute and remain connected across generations," he added.

Mohd Zuki said the introduction of i-Legasi reflects the importance of intergenerational support, enabling eligible members with sufficient retirement savings to transfer a portion to the EPF accounts of immediate family members, helping strengthen retirement security across generations.

He added that the Retirement Income Adequacy framework complemented this effort by setting clear benchmarks for Basic, Adequate and Enhanced Savings, giving members a clear line of sight between what they save today and the monthly income those savings can support.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's retirement age is back in focus as former Employees Provident Fund (EPF) chief executive officer Tan Sri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan calls for a review, while labour and employer groups differ over raising it.

Shahril, who is now Axiata Group Bhd chairman, said longer life expectancy and Malaysians' willingness to remain economically active could justify more flexible working arrangements beyond 60, including part-time work.

"This is something that really needs to be reviewed. The reality is that many Malaysians will continue working. When we reach 55 or 60, we still want to work," he told reporters after a panel session at the International Social Wellbeing Conference (ISWC) 2026 on Wednesday.

"So, in terms of the retirement age, perhaps we need to review it because life expectancy is also increasing. If we look at it now, it has reached 78 years," he added.

Shahril said flexible working arrangements could help older Malaysians remain economically active.

"Whether it is one or four (days) of part-time work, or perhaps through the economy, we should encourage people to remain productive.

"Because when it comes to retirement, if you retire but there is no productive use of your time, it is actually not good for you in terms of your mental and physical health," he said.

His call received support from the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), which said it had proposed raising the retirement age for private-sector workers to 65 in 2018.

MTUC president Datuk Abdul Halim Mansor said the government had not agreed to the proposal at the time, citing concerns that a higher retirement age could reduce employment opportunities for younger workers.

"However, what we are seeing is that Malaysia continues to depend on foreign workers, with more than three million foreign workers currently in the country.

"MTUC's proposal is based on workers' capabilities, skills and good health. Raising the retirement age would help increase EPF savings and shorten the period of retirement to around 10 years, based on an average life expectancy of 75 years," he told Business Times.

He said workers who remained employed could also benefit from staying physically and mentally active.

Requiring workers to retire at 60 could leave them less active and affect their mental alertness, potentially contributing to earlier health issues and increased stress, he said.

"The retirement age should be formally amended under the Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012.

"Amending the minimum retirement age would allow workers to continue making compulsory contributions to the EPF under the Employees Provident Fund Act 1991, while ensuring that their employers' contributions and related benefits remain protected," Halim said.

He said workers would also continue to receive protection under the Employees' Social Security Act 1969, including employment injury protection, the Employment Insurance System and the 24-Hour Scheme.

They would also continue to enjoy employment benefits under the Employment Act 1955, including sick leave and medical benefits.

"These benefits would be available to workers through an amendment to raise the minimum retirement age to 65," he said.

Flexible Approach To Retirement

However, Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) senior adviser for government, media and international engagement Datuk Syed Hussain Syed Husman said a blanket increase in the retirement age may not be the right approach.

The decision should ultimately be an individual choice.

"There are jobs where people are offered contracts after retirement and continue doing the same job. All of this depends on both parties and whether they want to continue.

"There are also opportunities for retirees to work on a consultancy basis, where they may only work a few days or when their expertise is needed. So, our employment environment is already quite flexible after the fixed retirement age of 60, or 65 in some sectors," he said.

Hussain, who is former MEF president, said the decision should ultimately be left to retirees, as they should be able to decide what works best for them.

"A one-size-fits-all approach to extending the retirement age may not work, as there are many other issues that need to be considered," he said.

Meanwhile, on lump-sum retirement withdrawals, Shahril said members should consider leaving their savings with EPF if they did not immediately need the money.

EPF could continue investing the savings and paying dividends, allowing members to plan phased withdrawals during retirement, he said.

"If you don't need it, or you don't have a better use for it, then just leave it with EPF. We will continue to invest it for you, you'll get a dividend, and you can then plan a phased drawdown. It's always better for you," he said.

Shahril acknowledged, however, that some retirees needed lump-sum withdrawals to meet financial commitments.

Those reaching 55 might need to settle housing or other loans, with their EPF savings potentially their only source of funds, he said.

Shahril said the broader challenge was ensuring Malaysians accumulated enough savings during their working years to meet their retirement needs and other financial commitments.

He said fewer members were making full lump-sum withdrawals at 55 compared with about 15 years ago.

"In the past, when I was first with EPF, 15 years ago, the percentage of people taking a full lump-sum withdrawal at 55 was very, very high. But now, that's coming down," he said.

Shahril attributed the decline partly to greater financial literacy and Malaysians accumulating more savings outside EPF.

He said Bank Negara data showed cash deposits and investments had also increased over time.

"So, I think people are generally better. And you would expect that because as a country matures and there's more income, people save more. But, of course, we still have to do the education, have to encourage people not to take everything out," he said.

Malaysia begins deportations, but hostility towards Rohingya refugees not stopping any time soon

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia will send back its first batch of 1,476 Myanmar nationals on Sept 29 under a phased repatriation programme, despite intense pressure from rights organisations and the United Nations refugee agency to halt the returns.

The deportations represent the first wave of a broader agreement with Naypyitaw that could see up to 5,000 Myanmar nationals returned. The Malaysian government has maintained that the programme is strictly voluntary but rights groups and the UNHCR have raised concerns over the safety of those being returned as conflict continues in Myanmar.

The anxiety over the move is reflected in James Bawi, a Chin community leader in Kuala Lumpur. For him, the imminent departures have cast a deep shadow over families already living in perpetual fear of immigration raids.

“What we can do is very limited,” Bawi told The Straits Times. “We have made our concerns and demands clear, but the final decision and authority are beyond our capacity as a refugee community.”

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has called for the minimum wage to be raised to RM3,100 under the 2027 budget, saying current workers’ salaries have yet to keep pace with productivity and company profits.

MTUC secretary-general Kamarul Baharin Mansor also called for government- linked companies (GLC) and government-linked investment companies (GLICs) to lead the way in paying better wages before the private sector is pushed to do the same.

“Fair wages must start with GLCs and GLICs. It should not be only the top management that benefits while workers at the bottom are left with the scraps,” he said in a statement.

Kamarul welcomed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s criticism of large corporations that continued paying low wages despite making huge profits, saying workers who helped generate those profits deserved a fairer share.

Yesterday, Anwar said the 2027 budget will include measures aimed at boosting the wage levels for workers in the private sector in line with growing productivity.

Anwar, who is also finance minister, said his administration will seek ways to negotiate with the private sector to raise wages in line with productivity levels, rather than threatening legal repercussions.

Since May 2025, six GLICs have set a minimum wage of RM3,100 for permanent employees as part of implementing a living wage policy. They are Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Permodalan Nasional Bhd, EPF, Retirement Fund Inc, the Armed Forces Fund Board and Lembaga Tabung Haji.

Anwar told Parliament last year that a total of 34 GLCs and GLICs have adopted the RM3,100 living wage policy.

The current minimum wage is RM1,700 a month.

The prime minister was also reported to have said that the RM1,700 minimum wage should not be treated as the starting salary for skilled workers or graduates.

PETALING JAYA : A police officer was seriously injured after being attacked by two Myanmar nationals while carrying out their duties in Kampung Pamah Kulat, Dong, Raub, yesterday.

Pahang acting police chief Azry Akmar Ayob said two suspects, aged 26 and 30, who were working at a farm, were believed to be drunk at the time of the incident and disturbing public order when playing music loudly on the side of the road.

“After being reprimanded, the two suspects were angry before attacking the policemen. As a result of the attack, the victim was injured on the head and some parts of the body before seeking treatment at the hospital,” he said according to Berita Harian.

A check-up at Lipis Hospital confirmed that Corporal Nik Mohd Farid Nik Pa broke his nose, bones on the left cheek near the bottom of the eye and bones under the left eye, bruises and bleeding around the left eye.

It is understood that two suspects were arrested shortly after the incident and no weapons were used in the attack.

The case is being investigated under Section 353 of the Penal Code for using criminal force against a civil servant on duty, which provides for a jail term of up to two years or a fine of up to RM10,000 or both, upon conviction.

I watched a friend pass away in front of me last night.
Last night, I joined a badminton session with some regular players. One of the co-hosts was someone I personally knew from another badminton group.
He was playing a men’s doubles game when, halfway through, he suddenly stopped and went outside to sit down and get some fresh air. We noticed that he was resting there for quite a while — probably more than 30 minutes.
Later, he came back in and said he wanted to pack up and go home to rest. He told some of us that he had been feeling very tired lately, stressed from work and hadn’t been getting enough rest. Our friends also encouraged him to go home and take it easy.
Not long after, he picked up his bag, he went outside and sat down to remove his badminton shoes.
Suddenly, he collapsed from the chair.
One of our friends immediately ran into the hall shouting for help. All of us rushed out. We realised he was struggling to breathe, and we immediately started CPR while others called for an ambulance.
Several people took turns performing CPR. I stayed beside him, holding his head and fanning him while everyone did whatever we could to help.
It felt like forever. More than 30 minutes passed before the paramedics arrived and took over. They administered oxygen, used an AED and continued trying to resuscitate him.
Eventually, they placed him onto a stretcher and moved him into the ambulance.
Sadly, we lost him.
This afternoon, we were informed that the post-mortem found a blocked artery and that he had passed away from a heart attack.
I’m still deeply shaken by what happened. Watching someone I knew collapse in front of me, and seeing everyone desperately trying to save him, is something I don’t think I will forget.
I’m sharing this because I really want to remind all my friends: please take care of yourselves.
It doesn’t matter whether you are young, old, fit, active or play badminton several times a week. Get your health checked regularly. Get enough sleep. Manage your stress. Don’t push yourself endlessly because of work.
Most importantly, listen to your body.
If you suddenly feel unusually tired, breathless, dizzy, have chest discomfort, or simply feel that something isn’t right, please don’t be stubborn and try to push through another game. Stop, rest, and seek medical attention when necessary.
No game, work deadline or commitment is more important than your health.
Please don’t compromise when it comes to taking care of yourself.
We only have one life. There will always be another badminton game to play. ❤️
