Fernandes quits Facebook, Instagram, cites ‘fake scams’

PETALING JAYA: AirAsia founder Tony Fernandes has decided to close his social media accounts on Meta, saying he is disappointed with the “constant fake news”.

In a post on Facebook yesterday, the Capital A CEO said he has already closed his Threads account and will close his Facebook account today, followed by Instagram.

“I love social media and it’s been incredible for me.

“(But) I have been the victim of so much fake scams and, really, Meta can stop all of this,” he said, referring to the parent company that owns the three platforms.

Fernandes said he has been disappointed by the constant fake news on Meta platforms.

“We talk about scams in parts of Asia but this can be prevented with the huge amount of technology they have,” he said.

He also said that closing his accounts has nothing to do with the negative comments he receives on social media, adding that such comments inspired him to do better.

“It has been a lot of fun and thanks for all the support, both positive and negative comments. Not closing down because of negative comments. They also inspire me to be better,” he said

He said he wants to focus on “what’s important” at this “last stage” of his life.

SOS

Coldplay 4 nights in Singapore 2024!

Sos

Coldplay fans in Singapore who were disappointed by the band's initial announcement for the Asian leg of their Music Of The Spheres World Tour can finally heave a sigh of relief. The Grammy-winning music act will be performing at the National Stadium for four nights in January 2024 (Jan 23, 24, 26 and 27).

Coldplay's run at the National Stadium will make them the first act to play for four nights at the venue.

The announcement comes days after Live Nation Singapore uploaded a teaser that featured promos of Coldplay’s tour playing on the screens of multiple buildings in Singapore.

Coldplay's Music Of The Spheres World Tour has sold over 7 million tickets, the most for any tour over the last two years, and has earned the band the Favorite Touring Artist award at the 2022 American Music Awards.

As part of the group's sustainability initiatives, Coldplay's Music Of The Spheres World Tour has produced 47 per cent less carbon dioxide emissions than their previous stadium tour in 2016/2017. Five million trees have also been planted around the world, one for each concert-goer.

Artiste presales of the concert will be held on Jun 19 from 2pm to 11.59pm. To get in on this, fans will have to subscribe to the newsletter on Coldplay’s website by Jun 16.

General sales will then commence on Jun 20 from 2pm via Ticketmaster, with ticket prices starting from S$68, excluding booking fees.

The band has also announced that they’ll be releasing a limited number of Infinity Tickets, priced at the equivalent of US$20 (S$27), for the shows at a later date. These tickets aim to make the tour more accessible to fans. Restricted to two tickets per buyer, Infinity Tickets must also be bought in pairs (which will be located next to each other).

Besides Singapore, Coldplay will also be adding Manila and Bangkok to their ongoing tour – playing on Jan 19 and Feb 3, respectively.

https://www.thesundaily.my/local/altantuya-...ward-NB10888335

PUTRAJAYA: The family of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu is appealing for higher compensation than the RM5 million awarded to them by the Shah Alam High Court in a suit they filed over her death in 2006.

In the notice of appeal filed on Jan 16 this year, Altantuya’s family is cross-appealing against part of the High Court’s decision on the quantum of damages.

On Dec 16 last year, High Court Judge Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera (now Court of Appeal judge) allowed the suit by Altantuya’s family and ordered former policemen Azilah Hadri and Sirul Azhar Umar, political analyst Abdul Razak Baginda, and the Malaysian Government to jointly pay RM5 million in general, aggravated and exemplary damages to the family.

The judge also awarded interest at five per cent per annum of the sum of judgment from the date of the filing of the lawsuit until the full settlement of the amount and legal costs of RM25,000.

On Jan 12 this year, the Malaysian Government and Abdul Razak filed their appeals against the High Court’s decision on liability and quantum.

A case management for the Altantuya family’s appeal was held before Court of Appeal deputy registrar Nadia Mohd Kamal today, who then fixed another case management date on June 13 for parties to update the court relating to the status of the grounds of appeal and notes of proceedings.

The appeals by Abdul Razak and the Government are also fixed for case management on the same day.

When contacted by Bernama, lawyer Simranjit Kaur Chhran representing Altantuya’s family, confirmed the next case management date.

On June 4, 2007, Altantuya’s parents Dr Shaariibuu and Altantsetseg Sanjaa, as well as their grandson Mungunshagai Bayarjargal, filed an RM100 million suit against Azilah Hadri and Sirul Azhar, Abdul Razak and the Malaysian Government.

In their statement of claim, Altantuya’s family said the model’s death resulted in them suffering mental shock and psychological trauma and sought compensation as well as exemplary and aggravated damages.

Sirul Azhar is currently being held at an Australian immigration detention centre, and Azilah is on death row at Kajang prison. - Bernama
Sien.. Cannot apply for RumahWIP in TTDI anymore

https://www.edgeprop.my//content/1905881/db...ara-development

KUALA LUMPUR (April 18): The Federal Court, in a unanimous decision, has quashed an appeal by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to reinstate the proposed Taman Rimba Kiara development project.

A three-judge bench led by Chief Judge of Malaya Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah, in delivering the court’s decision, said there are no merits in the appeal brought by DBKL.

The other members of the bench were judges Datuk Nallini Pathmanathan and Datuk Rhodzariah Bujang.

This appeal concerns a Jan 27, 2021 decision by the Court of Appeal that overturned an earlier decision by the High Court on Nov 28, 2018 rejecting a joint bid by Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) residents for a judicial review to get a certiorari order to quash the conditional planning permission and development order issued by DBKL.

This meant that the appellate court had quashed DBKL’s development order to Memang Perkasa Sdn Bhd for luxury service apartments to be built in Taman Rimba Kiara, which was upheld by the Federal Court on Tuesday (April 18).

The development order issued by DBKL in 2017 was for the construction eight blocks of luxury serviced apartments of up to 52 storeys, one block of affordable housing and an eight-storey podium car park.

The proposed project was first introduced during Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor’s tenure as federal territories minister in 2016.

TTDI's resident associations had objected to the development, claiming that it will significantly increase the density of TTDI and irreversibly degrade Taman Rimba Kiara as a green lung.

To develop the land, Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan (YWP) as the landowner of Taman Rimba Kiara had entered into a joint venture (JV) with Memang Perkasa. Under the JV, Memang Perkasa was to pay RM160 million to YWP in stages. But the YWP-Memang Perkasa JV had to get approval from DBKL to develop Taman Rimba Kiara.

Memang Perkasa is a subsidiary of Malton Bhd.

Conflict of interest found
The appellate court observed conflict of interest, in that the applicant and the approving body was the same. It found that both the mayor and the federal territories minister sat on YWP's board of trustees.

According to the apex court's judgement read by Nallini, the development order ought to be set aside because the mayor was a trustee of YWP.

“We concluded that there was a conflict of interest and/or bias afflicting the decision of the Datuk Bandar (mayor), which is a separate and independent ground of challenge. It therefore follows that on this ground alone, the impugned development order is void and ought to be set aside,” she said.

“The mayor, therefore, wore three hats in three capacities: the mayor was part of the entity that approved the subject land’s alienation, the mayor was part of the applicant for planning permission ie Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan as it was a member of the board of trustees, and the mayor was also the entity that granted the impugned development order,” she added.

Nallini said the development order had contravened the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2020 which was also against the Federal Territories Act, because they had changed the land use to grant the development order when it was earmarked in the KL Structure Plan 2020 as green open space for public use.

“Having considered the legislative history and purpose and object of the FT (Federal Territories) Act, we are of the view that the structure plan is a legally binding document which a planning authority must comply with,” she said.

The court ruled that the mayor, instead of relying on the structure plan, had relied on the dated comprehensive development plan (CDP) to authorise the development order.

“In short, the CDP has no relevance to the grant of a development order in relation to the subject lands because it is inapplicable to the same. There is no basis in law for the Datuk Bandar to rely on Section 22(4) [of the] FT Act to justify use of the CDP,” she said.

“The appellants submit that the KL Structure Plan 2020 comprises mere policy that has no force of law. We found in our full grounds of judgement that the KL Structure Plan 2020 as a statutory development plan does have the force of law and is binding. To give development plans their own force of law is to ensure that planning in the federal territory is achieved pursuant to cohesive planning principles,” she said.

“We have found for the reasons stated in our full grounds of judgement that the Federal Territories Act and the KL Structure Plan 2020 have been contravened by the issuance of the impugned development order.

“It is therefore null and void and was correctly quashed by the Court of Appeal,” Nallini said.

She also added that it was incumbent upon the court to protect public interest when land allocated for public space is removed from public use and utilised for private ownership without the knowledge of the public.

Housing for settlers a 'separate obligation by the state'
One of the issues in this case is that of former workers of a rubber estate who were rehoused in longhouses in a corner of Taman Rimba Kiara. They were promised permanent housing by the State Authority, which did not transpire. The now quashed development was expected to resolve this promise by the construction of a 29-storey block to house all the residents of the longhouses.

However, Nallini said that issue of housing for them is a separate obligation owed by the state to the settlers.

She also said the mayor should not rely on the issue of lack of provision of housing for them to justify the grant of the impugned development order where such an order has the effect of converting what was meant to be a public space for public use to a mixed development for private purposes.

The bench also ordered DBKL, YWP and Memang Perkasa to pay costs of RM100,000, RM80,000 and RM70,000 respectively to the respondents in the suit.

There was no order as to costs for the longhouse residents.

Segambut Member of Parliament Hannah Yeoh tweeted “We won” after the decision was read out in Zoom proceedings.

"Taman Rimba Kiara at Federal Court - We WON today for its preservation as a public park! A battle that has taken us more than 5 years. For me, this is also a battle against the might of those with deep pockets and we prevailed,” she said.

‘Flowing water’ banquet same as Kenduri?

‘Flowing water’ banquet chaos: family war breaks out over cheap, fast and traditional Taiwan wedding dinner, leaves marriage on rocks, creates online rumpus

TLDR Summary: Bride dulan cos wedding budget cut.

The marriage of a man and woman in Taiwan is on the rocks after the man’s family proposed a cut-price wedding dinner during which cheap food would be served in turns so people could eat and leave.

An online furore broke out over what has been dubbed “flowing water banquet chaos” following a series of recent posts by the bride-to-be accusing her would-be in-laws of being stingy.

The row began on January 2 when the woman told an anonymous forum that her future in-laws were planning to hold a wedding dinner in the form of a “flowing water banquet”, with 45 to 50 tables of guests at around NT$9,000 (US$295) per table.

A “flowing water” banquet is a Taiwanese-style of eating where guests are not assigned a table and leave after eating, allowing guests to dine faster in a smaller venue so as to accommodate more people.

The bride-to-be said: “Getting married is a big life event. I have four or five tables of family and friends, and a lot of my university friends will be coming, so I thought to myself, is ‘flowing water’ banquet adequate?”
She is from the city of Taipei while her fiance is from the southern city of Kaohsiung. His father wants villagers of his hometown to attend and thinks a “flowing water banquet” is appropriate.

But the bride-to-be is not convinced and said: “It’s already 2023. Do rural countrymen still love to have ‘flowing water’ banquets?” Her post was accompanied by three vomiting emojis.

One angry observer said: “No wonder you want to remain anonymous. You deserve to be scolded. What is ‘countrymen’? It’s a terrible way to waste the groom’s youth on such people.”

Another online poster said: “Do you have to waste his family’s money?”
The next day, the bride-to-be posted again, saying she had lived in the United States and got used to that way of life.
She also cited famous people from Taiwan, like its former president Ma Ying-jeou and superstar Jay Chou, asking: “Do these people hold a flowing water banquet for their wedding or kid’s marriage?”

This reignited the online row: “Since your values are so different, please leave the guy and his family alone!” Said someone on social media.
Then followed by a string of attacks and accusations against the bride-to-be by members of the would-be groom’s family.

In one posting, the “groom’s sister” showed a transcript of a chat she had with the bride-to-be. The bride said to her future sister-in-law: “What the hell do you want, I haven’t even married into your family yet, and you want to give me a hard time?”

In a later posting, the sister-in-law said: “I don’t think this marriage will work out.”
The row has sparked an internet frenzy on social media in Taiwan.

One observer said it was like a “nine-episode television series - the chaos of the flowing water banquet.”

Sos

Sos

PETALING JAYA: Office staff working around the business area at Jalan Kilang 51/205, off Jalan Tandang, are upset after a Petaling Jaya City Council enforcement officer issued parking summonses yesterday for cars despite them being properly parked inside the bays provided.

When approached by theSun, the enforcement officer, who wanted to be known as Mohd Nazri, said every parking box in the city has a number and parking fees are required.

“I was around this area and I noticed there’s a lot of cars here. I called my boss to ask him if I could summon those cars that didn’t pay our fee. He said ‘yes’ and I just carried out my duty. That’s it.”

Mahali Abdul Ghani, 47, said he never received any notice saying he should pay for parking along that stretch of road.

“I’ve worked in this area for three years and have never seen any PJ City Council officer issue any parking summonses.

“This is the first time I have received a summons for parking here and I was parked in a proper parking bay.”

Hwa Xin Yee, 27, said she noticed the city council had marked each parking bay with a number, but had not been informed of the need to pay a parking fee.

“I was walking towards my car at about 1.30pm when I noticed the officer issuing summonses. I was so confused because I have been parking my car here for so many years and have never paid any parking fees.

“If I knew that I had to pay, I would have. But there was no (notice) saying that I needed to pay. Just putting numbers on a parking bay does not directly translate to ‘I must pay for parking”.’

Praveena Raj, 30, said she is expecting an explanation from the city council on whether she has to pay to park there.

“Do we have to pay for the parking spots? If we do, where should we pay and how does the system work? Not all of us are residents of Petaling Jaya.”

Efforts to contact the PJ City Council for comment did not receive a response at press time.

Putin dies and goes to hell, but after a while, he is given a day off for good behavior.

So he goes to Moscow, enters a bar, orders a drink, and asks the bartender:

-Is Crimea ours?

-Yes, it is.

-And the Donbas?

-Also ours.

-And Kyiv?

-We got that too.

Satisfied, Putin drinks, and asks:

-Thanks, how much do I owe you?

-5 euros.
