M'sian to get Hollywood sound mixing award

Award-winning producer is first Sarawakian and Malaysian to get Hollywood sound mixing award nomination for Disney flick
QUOTE

KUCHING, Feb 14 ― Sarawakian Alvin Wee, an award-winning producer, mixer and musician, has been nominated for an accolade at the Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Awards 2022 in Hollywood, making him the first Malaysian to achieve this feat.

Wee, who is from Kuching, was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing for his work in Disney’s animated feature film, Encanto. He is credited as the Scoring Mixer of the Sound Mixing Team for the chart-topping soundtrack.

He told The Borneo Post of the immense pride he felt to be able to stand with contemporaries and the sound team for the CAS nomination.

“I’m also very proud to be the first Malaysian and Sarawakian to be able to do this at this level,” said the 34-year-old when contacted.

The CAS Awards recognises outstanding sound mixing in film and television and the results are a notable precursor to the Academy Awards especially in the sound editing and mixing category.

On top of this nomination, Wee is also over the moon that Encanto has earned three Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Score where its nominee Germaine Franco has become the first Latina composer to receive the Oscar nomination.

“This is definitely a first for a lot of people for sure including myself. I think the biggest thing is the historic nomination of Germaine for her score being the first Latina or woman of color to ever be nominated in Hollywood and not only that being the only woman to be nominated (in the category) this year,” he said.

He shared that he was approached by Franco, a long time collaborator and friend, to work on Encanto’s soundtrack.

“She took a chance on me earlier in my career and even after doing countless films and projects with her, I’m always grateful to get that call.

“Naturally, when she brought me into the studio and told me she was going on a musical adventure featuring Colombian music I immediately said, ‘Yes!’,” he said.

On working with Franco and Encanto’s songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda, Wee said he had thoroughly enjoyed every part of the music and being part of the process.

“Lin-Manuel is an incredible storyteller and songwriter. His collaboration with Germaine to bring the music and story of Encanto to life has been an honour to listen, watch and experience firsthand in the studios and also in theatres.

“The score that Germaine wrote was so meticulously crafted and every detail of each note was treated with the utmost care to complement those songs that are incredibly catchy! It was very rewarding to have contributed to the process,” he said, adding that it was equally exciting to see the score and songs work together as a very important part of the story.

Asked on what were his inspirations while working on the soundtrack, Wee said he was very much inspired by the culture, musical styles, tradition and musical instruments of Colombia.

“It was exciting to learn about, record and mix in all these traditional Colombian instruments such as the Arpa Llanera, a Colombian Harp; the Tiple which is a very bright guitar considered as the Colombian national instrument; the Marimba de Chonta as well as a wide and rich array of other instruments that made the movie so vibrant.

“There were all these traditional musical styles like the Cumbia, Champeta, Bambuca and Joropo that obviously were a huge part of their musical and dance language that had been used all over the score. It was so exciting to explore all these musical styles and see how they work within the context of a musical underscore,” he said.

He also drew on influences as a musician and growing up with all my own set traditional music in Sarawak and Malaysia.

“I personally did a lot of research and study not only the musical styles of Colombia but also the history of the country and how it influenced the culture. There was the use of many different styles and how each instrument is stylistically featured for each genre.

“It was important to me that we got that right so I spent a lot of time listening, reading and watching documentaries about the topic. I wanted to make sure I was cognizant of all the cultural influences and idiosyncrasies in the music that made it unique,” he said.

Since its release, Encanto has been taking the world by storm, particularly its soundtrack which has become a viral phenomenon and has been sitting in the No.1 spot on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart for the fifth non-consecutive week.

Wee said it’s been great to see the soundtrack grow and resonate with audiences around the world.

“I was sure that people would have connected with the music watching the movie but to see the album and songs to do as well as they have is definitely a first for me.

“My jaw drops everytime it shatters another record. It’s been a surreal experience for sure,” he expressed.

He views the success of Encanto’s music to be up against the likes of renowned composers Hans Zimmer and Johnny Greenwood and be voted on by the best in the industry at this year’s awards season to be a huge honour.

“I’m just along for the ride and have been very proud to have helped be part of that journey and realized that vision.

“I know for a fact that everyone worked very hard to deliver Encanto to the world. All these nominations and awards like the Oscars are very well deserved.”

He hoped that his achievement will be able to inspire the next generation to pursue their dreams.

“I want the next generation of composers, producers and engineers who look like me to say ‘I can do that as well’ when they hear my story,” he said. ― Borneo Post Online
https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/202...ywood-s/2041528

Cute Aweks content creator makes waves in S'Korea

Sabrina Azhar, 22, has become the go-to talent for projects that require either Malaysian or Muslim representation in Korea. (Sabrina Azhar pic)

PETALING JAYA: After concluding her compulsory education, Subang-born Sabrina Azhar applied for several scholarships and played the waiting game as she had no firm decisions on where to further her studies.

“I was never aiming for South Korea, it just sort of happened,” the 22-year-old tells FMT.

She wound up securing a nine-month placement in Intec Education College’s Korean Preparatory Programme before departing for Seoul to study mechanical engineering at Hanyang University.

There, the social media enthusiast started posting on various platforms about her life as a Malaysian student in South Korea. Her number of followers began to grow, and kept increasing.

“I didn’t expect to go viral. It was just something I liked to do in my free time,” she says.

Thanks to the “Look East Policy”, East Asia’s reputation as an education hub has skyrocketed, and Malaysians are fast becoming interested in Korea as an option to further their education. Sabrina’s inbox was swarming with questions about what studying there was like, which prompted her to address them in the form of YouTube videos.

Making Korean actor Son Jung-hun smile after proclaiming how honoured she was to be his first Malaysian Muslim friend. (YouTube pic)

Her efforts in bridging Korean and Malaysian culture have not gone unnoticed: Blimey, the largest South Korean YouTube channel targeting Malaysia, invited her to be on their show, “3&More”.

The programme handpicked several Korean men with virtually no knowledge of Malaysia and Islam, and aimed for cultural exchange by setting them up on a series of blind dates with Malaysian Muslim women.

Well-received by Koreans and Malaysians alike, “3&More” has been viewed upward of 43 million times on YouTube and Viu. Seeing the success of the show, Sabrina realised intercultural relations do not always have to be boring.

With this in mind, she started churning out educational and entertaining content, particularly ones that focused on what life was like in South Korea for a Malaysian Muslim hijabi.

Sabrina posing with the girl group after the ‘Shopee Live 9.9 x TWICE’ session. (Sabrina Azhar pic)

Today, Sabrina has amassed a following of about 390,000 on Instagram. Currently in her third year of university, she aims to balance her studies with creating content, both of which she takes seriously.

Occasionally, the pressure does get to her. “I try to take a breather, and I find dancing helps me destress the most,” says Sabrina, who is represented by WILD Entertainment Group, the only South Korean entertainment agency that does not shy away from signing hijabi talents.

The rising star is determined to put Malaysia on the map. Two months ago, she was chosen to host, translate, and interview K-Pop girl group TWICE for Shopee’s live session in Seoul.

Snippets of the session were recorded and uploaded on TikTok, with Malaysians exclaiming how proud they were to see local Muslim representation.

Co-hosting a cooking show for Halal Restaurant Week 2021 with celebrity chef Choi Gwang-ho. (Sabrina Azhar pic)

It has become clear Sabrina is now the go-to talent for projects that require either Malaysian or Muslim representation in Korea. Early last month, she co-hosted a cooking show for Halal Restaurant Week 2021 with the winner of the third season of “MasterChef” Korea, Choi Gwang-ho.

She helped the esteemed chef cook up a halal version of “kimchijeon”, a type of Korean pancake, while simultaneously introducing Korean viewers to a beloved Malaysian snack – banana fritters.

Another notable project Sabrina was involved in was for Arirang Food & Travel, where she, alongside host Justin Hyuk Choi, explored the district of Gangnam to learn more about cultural dances in Korea.

Bringing the Malaysian wave to South Korea on a billboard in Seoul, for the show ‘Gangnam Insider’s Picks: The Exotic World of Dance in Gangnam’. (Sabrina Azhar pic)

Asked whether the attention she has garnered makes her feel like a spokesperson, she says, “It’s a given that they’d be curious. I was once stopped by a lady who wanted to know what I was wearing on my head,” she recalls, adding that people have always been respectful of her beliefs.

According to her, South Korea still has a long way to go when it comes to understanding and accommodating Muslims. “It is not the haven or sanctuary my viewers back home think it is, and I try to convey that through my content every day,” she says.

Still, Sabrina believes small changes can make a big difference. “I really don’t mind taking the time to explain things to Koreans. I understand they’ve grown up in a very homogeneous society.

“If my answers help them understand a little bit more about my homeland and my religion, it’s all good.”

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...in-south-korea/

Msian ports ranked among world’s most efficient

QUOTE

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 14 — Malaysia is still holding its own in terms of efficiency rankings in port performance even during the pandemic, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said.

He said Port Klang has been recognised as having the most efficient operations among 22 of the world’s biggest and most prominent ports worldwide, handling an average of 131 ships weekly and taking just 1.7 days to service each vessel compared with 1.3 days from 2017 to 2019 before the pandemic occurred.

“This is quicker than our regional competitors at a time when 77 per cent of ports, according to a Bloomberg report, were experiencing abnormally long times of turnaround,” he said in a facebook posting.

Wee was commenting on a report by Bloomberg which quoted global investment bank RBC Capital Markets’ study on global port container discharge times and congestion.

He said just like many other countries, Malaysia has not been spared by the impact of Covid-19 on supply chains worldwide.

The transport minister said several port clearing exercises were implemented in 2020 and 2021 to prevent congestion in Malaysian ports nationwide, especially Port Klang, Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Johor Port, and Penang Port.

Wee said during the movement control orders when restrictions were imposed on vehicle movement throughout the country, it was crucial for the Transport Ministry to work with the ports and other related agencies to make sure that goods, essential and even non-essential were able to move and get to households and businesses.

“Even our efforts sometimes meant that vessels had longer than usual turnaround times to unload their holds, and containers and cargo were piling up in the container yards and warehouses.

“At one point, Port Klang’s utilisation reached about 88 per cent of its total capacity,” he said.

The minister said on Sept 12, he announced that all loading and unloading activities for import and export purposes were allowed to operate 24 hours a day throughout the week, including for non-essential items, with strict compliance to the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

He said the measures had done much to reduce the port congestion throughout the country.

“I would like to thank the Port Klang Authority for working closely and effectively with Westport, Northport and the Marine Department of Malaysia alongside the ministry to ensure that we are able to achieve this result even during the movement control orders.

“I will continue to monitor the situation closely so that we can continue this excellent performance,” he said. — Bernama
https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/202...ays-tra/2013317

Pejuang needs to be race-based because of Umno

QUOTE

PETALING JAYA: Dr Mahathir Mohamad has defended the need for race-based parties, saying that in Pejuang’s case, it has to be so because it is expected to go up against Umno, a Malay party.

The former prime minister said Pejuang, of which he is the founder and chairman, is expected to contest in rural areas where the population is largely Malay.

“These people will not support a multiracial party. In the absence of any other Malay party, the rural people will vote for Umno,” he said in a blog post this evening.

Mahathir said that while there were other issues, race and money were “more important”.

And because Pejuang had no money, it had to depend on “race and its anti-corruption campaign” to attract voters.

He also said other political parties in Malaysia were race-based because Malaysians insisted on identifying with their country of origin.

“As long as we retain our identification with our countries of origin, politics and political parties in Malaysia will remain racial.”

In 2018, Mahathir defended the race-based strategy of Bersatu, of which he was then chairman, saying it was a realistic approach as Malaysians were still split along racial lines.

He said that despite criticism of the party’s racial outlook, the reality was that political parties still chose candidates from among the majority race of the constituencies they were facing.

Mahathir resigned as Bersatu chairman in February last year and set up Pejuang six months later.

Subscribe to our newsletter and get news delivered to
https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...umno-says-dr-m/
