KUALA LUMPUR: A businessman, his relatives and friends have lost around RM12mil after a foreign exchange (forex) scheme they invested in suddenly disappeared along with the middleman, an old friend of the businessman.

MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said that around 629 investors participated in the forex scheme.

A complainant, Eng Keen Nian, said he was approached to invest in the scheme by an old friend by the name of “Lim”.

“We have been friends for more than 10 years, and in 2019 we were having a chat together when he asked me if I was interested in investing with him.

“Since we had been friends for so long, I just transferred RM12,000 to his personal bank account.

“After two months he told me that I had made some profits and I withdrew around RM2,000. It seemed legit so I introduced the scheme to family members and friends,” the 30-year-old businessman told a press conference at the MCA headquarters here yesterday.

He added that the company that operated the scheme was based overseas.

In total, Eng and his contacts invested around RM12mil in the scheme. However, in October 2020, several investors who enquired about withdrawing money from the scheme were met with difficulties.

“My friend assured us that everything was fine, but we couldn’t withdraw our money when we logged into the website. Then a week later, the website disappeared. When we tried to contact my friend’s boss, we were told to deal directly with Lim instead,” Eng said, adding that all money transfers had been done through Lim.

A police report was lodged on Dec 15 last year.

Chong said that about three weeks ago, he managed to contact Lim, who claimed to be overseas.

“I spoke to him and urged him to explain to the investors what had happened. If it was a bad business deal, he should meet all of them and explain properly.

“He told me he would contact his lawyer about it and since then he has been uncontactable,” he added,

Chong said he has instructed his legal team to assist the group of investors.

“If it is a bad investment, people lose money when they do business. But if it is a scam, my lawyer will go all out to get justice,” he said.

In a statement, Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohamad Farouk Eshak confirmed that a report on the case had been made.

CanSino vaccine arrive in Malaysia

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia received 200,000 doses of CanSino vaccines on Friday (August 20) – the first shipment of 3.5 million doses ordered from China's CanSino Biologics.

The vaccine shipment arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 7.50am in a MASKargo flight from Beijing.

Present to witness the arrival of the vaccines were Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir and Health Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohd Shafiq Abdullah.

CanSino is a single-dose vaccine and its usage in Malaysia was approved by the Drug Control Authority on June 15.

Solution Biologics is the product registration holder for CanSino in Malaysia.

So far, Malaysia has been utilising three vaccines for its National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme – Cominarty (Pfizer-BioNTech), CoronaVac (Sinovac) and AstraZeneca – and require two doses for full vaccination.

NOTE: CanSino is a viral vector technology which is the same technology as AstraZeneca. For those who prefer inactivated virus technology, use only Sinovac and Sinopharm with less side effects. Don't be confused between the three vaccines from China.

Sinovac vaccine uses an inactivated or killed virus that cannot replicate in human cells to trigger an immune response.

In recent weeks, several social media messages have popped up saying inactivated virus COVID-19 vaccines, like Sinovac's, provide superior protection against variants than mRNA vaccines. Other messages on platforms have said the mRNA vaccines are less safe.

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia faces difficulties in repatriating Rohingya refugees as other countries, including Myanmar, are not willing to take them in, says Immigration director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud (pic).

In an interview with Sinar Harian, Khairul said this has made Malaysia the main destination for Rohingya to seek refuge and settle in the country.

"Since 2019, these Rohingya refugees have been detained at immigration detention depots throughout the country.

"The current number of those arrested is 1,998 people," he said to Sinar Harian on Friday (June 11).

He was responding to Sinar Harian's report on Friday which revealed that Rohingya refugees are paying up to RM10,000 to agents or syndicates to enter Malaysia illegally.

On June 1, Khairul Dzaimee was reported to have said that Rohingya refugees detained at immigration detention depots nationwide would not be deported for the time being due to Myanmar's refusal to accept them.

Sinar Harian noted that although they are undocumented migrants, they cannot be deported based on immigration laws and regulations, as their country of origin does not want to accept them, which makes the process of preparing documents impossible.

Currently, all the refugees have been transferred from Wawasan Negara Camp, Langkawi to Sungai Bakap Temporary Immigration Depot, Penang and Bidor, Perak.

Dear Dr. G,

I have a very embarrassing issue that has been troubling me for years.

I underwent circumcision when I was a teenager for hygiene purposes.

It was an unpleasant experience, as I was scared and not keen for the operation, but I guess it was a bit of a family tradition as my father was also circumcised.

The operation itself was uneventful, however after the operation, I realized the skin is so tight that I get pain when I get erection.

Besides, I also feel the loss of sensations, as I often have numbing effects of my glans penis since the masturbation days.

Now, I am a grown man and attempts of intercourse are not impossible, but certainly not so enjoyable.

I read online there are procedures to restore the foreskin for men facing difficulties after the cut. Therefore, I am putting Dr. G on the spot for his view on this issue.

First of all, do many men regret having circumcision?

Can foreskin really be restored? If so, how is the operation done?

Do I really have to undergo surgery for this? Is the process painful?

Really hope it is not too hard to restore my former glory.

However, some medical research show adult circumcisions may cause sexual difficulties, resulting in men regretting the operation. One study published in Journal of Urology highlighted 32% of the participants reported decrease in erectile functions and loss of sensitivity. Another study demonstrated 48% of the circumcised adults reported little pleasure from masturbation after the cut, and expressing regrets after the surgery.

The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Los Angeles has warned Thai people in California to be on their guard following the horrifying killing of an 84-year-old man in the Anza Vista neighbourhood of San Francisco.

The Thai man, named by a local TV station as Vicha Ratanapakdee, 84, was among three elderly Asian people to be subjected to brutal attacks, according to Tanee Sangrat, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The attack took place at 8.30am last Thursday on a pavement in front of his home in the pleasant central city district.

Security footage, circulated widely on the internet, shows a man running towards Vicha and throwing him violently to the ground before turning around and fleeing, according to KTVU Fox 2 News.

Vicha died in hospital in the early hours of Saturday and soon after, police reportedly charged a 19-year-old man, Antoine Watson, with murder and 20-year-old female friend, Maylasia Goo, with being an accessory to the killing.

The broad daylight attack has caused alarm among members of the Asian-American community in the Bay Area.

"There's nothing non-intentional about it," said Vicha's son-in-law, Eric Lawson. He and his wife Kim, Vicha's daughter, believed the attacker targeted him because he was an elderly Asian.

PETALING JAYA: A US aircraft impersonated a Malaysian airplane’s transponder code as it flew over the disputed South China Sea, said a report.

Technology magazine Popular Mechanics said this was detected by Chinese government think tank SCS Probing Initiative, which posted their findings on Twitter.

The think tank said the RC-135W Rivet Joint reconnaissance aircraft had left Kadena US air base on Okinawa island in Japan at 3am on Wednesday, before turning off its transponder shortly after.

“The plane’s International Civil Aviation Organization Mode-S number, a 24-bit identifier assigned to all aircraft and broadcast by onboard transponder, was AE01CE,” said the report.

Later, a plane appeared on the same route with a different Mode-S number of 750548, which belongs to an unknown Malaysian aircraft, entering the Yellow Sea and hovering over it from 5am to 11am.

“The RC-135W, call sign RAINY51, then flew a racetrack pattern between Hainan Island and the Paracel Islands, an archipelago in the South China Sea that China claims, but whose ownership is in dispute,” it said.

The report said the RC-135W Rivet Joint is a Boeing 707 jetliner converted and designed to collect electronic intelligence for analysis.

It said planes sometimes broadcast the wrong Mode-S number by mistake, although it said it was highly unlikely for the US aircraft to have accidentally changed its transponder code.

It said it was unclear why the US aircraft flew in the area.

Parts of the South China Sea are subject to rival claims by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam while Beijing claims the entire waterway.

The rival claims to the sea, which straddles vital shipping lanes and covers rich fishing grounds, make it a potential flashpoint for conflict.

China and Asean – of which four claimants are members – are currently in talks for a code of conduct in the area.

Most recently, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob had met China’s defence minister to discuss the South China Sea issue, among other matters.
