Meta, Starlink and Microsoft team up with the FBI to delete over 1.4 million accounts and seize millions in cryptocurrency related to huge scam networks targeting Americans

Dozens of people have been arrested, and millions of dollars in cryptocurrency seized, in a large-scale, multi-national operation against internet scammers and fraudsters.

On May 18, the US Department of Justice, the FBI, Secret Service, law enforcement agencies in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Thailand, as well as multiple commercial businesses such as Meta, Coinbase and Starlink, participated in the takedown of a scam network in Southeast Asia.

In a press release published earlier this week, Meta disclosed the details of the operation, saying 63 suspects were arrested, while Coinbase froze more than $3 million in cryptocurrency assets. At the same time, Meta disabled more than 1.4 million accounts, pages, and groups from Facebook and Instagram, while Microsoft suspended roughly 20,000 fraudulent accounts linked to the scam network.

Identifying more scams
Meta said the intelligence shared between these companies and agencies led to the identification of "many potentially new scam center locations and networks", which were referred to law enforcement. Starlink participated by terminating connectivity for thousands of kits that were attributed to unlawful use.

The announcement did not say what the nature of the scam was, or if the group had a name or any hierarchy. Scams involving cryptocurrency are usually romance or investment scams (or a combination). Users are enticed to "invest" into fraudulent platforms, under the promise of enormous financial gains. Romance scams work similarly, tricking victims into believing they are "investing" with a future significant other.

Sometimes, scammers engage in so-called "pig butchering" scams, gradually cultivating relationships with victims before persuading them to transfer funds to fraudulent cryptocurrency platforms. Even when the victims realize that they cannot withdraw, the scammers remain in character, posing as customer support, and promising the victim the release of the funds if they pay "tax" or "withdrawal fee".

Hantavirus can remain in human semen for up to six years and has the potential for sexual transmission even after a person has recovered, according to a peer-reviewed study.

The discovery means male patients are likely to be advised to change their sexual practices as happens with other viruses such as Ebola, which also survives in the sexual tract.

The research was conducted at the Spiez Laboratory, a Swiss government institute tasked with fighting nuclear, biological and chemical threats, and published in the journal Viruses.

They investigated a Swiss 55-year-old man who had become infected with the Andes strain of the hantavirus in South America six years earlier.

They found that although there was no longer any trace of the virus in man’s blood, urine and respiratory tract, it was still detectable in his semen 71 months later.

As with other viruses, including Ebola and Zika virus, male testes may act as a “reservoir” where the virus can essentially “hide” and evade the body’s immune system, said the paper.

A 2021 Ebola outbreak in Guinea, which resulted in 23 cases and 12 deaths, was later linked to a survivor of the West Africa 2014-2016 epidemic, who had gone on to spread the virus through sex.

“Taken together, our results show that the Andes virus has the potential for sexual transmission,” the 2023 study said, although this has never been documented.

It is unclear what implications this may have for the eight confirmed hantavirus cases linked to the MV Hondius cruise or the 20 people with no symptoms isolating in Britain.

Analysts at Airfinity, a company that tracks global health risks, recommend that male patients should receive “extensive safe-sex guidance beyond the [42-day] quarantine.”

The guidance should be “analogous to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Ebola survivor semen-monitoring protocols,” it added.

The WHO protocols say the semen of male survivors of Ebola should be tested every three months and not be considered clear before two consecutive negative test results.

Until cleared, they should “abstain from all types of sex” or “use condoms consistently and correctly.”

They should also wash themselves “thoroughly” with soap and water after any contact with semen – including after masturbation, according to the guidance.

The testes are known to act as a “safe harbour” for at least 27 infectious diseases, allowing some pathogens to live in the body and infect others years after the patient has recovered.

Sperm cells are protected against attack by the body’s immune system as they are needed for procreation. But this also means that viruses can survive there.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), which is monitoring British passengers from the MV Hondius, told The Telegraph: “UKHSA keeps all guidance under constant review and monitors emerging evidence, including international research, as it becomes available.

“Any individuals in England who are confirmed as cases or identified as contacts will be provided with all necessary public health advice, including on reducing the risk of onward transmission.”

The mayor of Arcadia, California, Eileen Wang, abruptly resigned Monday as federal prosecutors announced she had been charged with acting as a covert foreign agent for China.

Wang has agreed to plead guilty to a single felony count that carries a statutory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.

According to her plea agreement, Wang, 58, and an associate, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, 65, worked on behalf of the People’s Republic of China to promote the PRC’s interests through propaganda efforts. Among their platforms was the U.S. News Center, which purported to be a news source for Southern California’s Chinese American community, according to the DOJ.

In one example from June 2021, prosecutors said PRC officials contacted Wang through encrypted WeChat messages to deliver prewritten news articles. One PRC-drafted essay published in the Los Angeles Times stated:

“There is no genocide in Xinjiang; there is no such thing as ‘forced labor’ in any production activity, including cotton production. Spreading such rumor to do defame China, destroy Xinjiang’s safety and stability, weaken local economy, suppress China’s development.”

Minutes later, Wang posted the article on her own website and responded to the PRC official with a link, as did others in the group chat, according to the DOJ. A short time later, the PRC official replied, “So fast, thank you everyone.”

The Chinese government has been accused of carrying out genocide against ethnic minorities, predominantly Muslims, in the Xinjiang region and of imposing forced labor.

In August 2021, federal prosecutors said Wang and three other members of the WeChat group shared links to the same article on their respective “news” websites and again received thanks from the PRC official.

In November 2021, prosecutors said Wang coordinated propaganda articles with a high-level member of PRC intelligence who had a direct line to Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to court documents. That official, John Chen of Chino, California, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 months in federal prison for acting as an illegal agent of the PRC and conspiracy to bribe a public official.

Sun, meanwhile, received a four-year federal prison sentence after pleading guilty in October 2025 to acting as an illegal agent of a foreign government. Wang was expected to make her first court appearance Monday.

“Individuals elected to public office in the United States should act only for the people of the United States that they represent,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenberg. “It is deeply concerning that someone who previously received and executed directives from PRC government officials is now in a position of public trust at all, but particularly so because that relationship with that foreign government had never been disclosed.”

Wang was elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022. The city’s mayors are selected on a rotating basis.

Her official biography page remained online as of Monday afternoon, describing her as “the daughter of proud immigrants who came to California seeking their American Dream.”

Prior to her election, Wang served on the Parent Teacher Association for Camino Grove Elementary School and was president of the American Southwest Chamber of Commerce USA.

“The allegations at the center of this case, that a foreign government sought to exert influence over a local elected official, are deeply troubling. We take them seriously,” the city said in a statement Monday. “Following an internal review, we can confirm that no city finances, staff or decision-making processes were involved.”

Arcadia officials said the City Council would soon discuss replacing Wang, who represented the city’s 3rd District, until the November 2026 election.
