Tan Chong secures exclusive rights to assemble CKD buses

PETALING JAYA: Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd has secured the exclusive right to assemble and distribute completely knocked-down buses under the Silver Bus brand from Xi’an Silver Bus Corp in Malaysia and other countries which the two parties agree on later.

It told Bursa Malaysia yesterday that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Tan Chong Industrial Equipment Sdn Bhd (TCIE), has yesterday signed a franchise and distribution agreement with Xi’an Silver Bus.

Silver Bus, a company incorporated in China in 1994, is a joint venture between Volvo Bus Corp and Xi’an Aircraft Industry (Group) Co Ltd (XAC).

“Through the joint venture, Silver Bus is able to capitalise on the technologies of Volvo products and the standards used in aircraft assembly from XAC in developing high standard coaches,” Tan Chong said.

Silver Bus had rolled out “a series of high grade coaches” and established itself as a market leader in the luxury coaches market in China, it said.

Tan Chong expects the distribution of the buses in Malaysia to begin in the second quarter of 2011 with a projected sales volume of 80 units in the first year of operation.

TCIE has been involved in the distribution of trucks and buses under the brand of UD Trucks (formerly Nissan Diesel) since 1978 and has established itself as a leading commercial vehicle distributor in Malaysia.

The agreement with Xi’an Silver Bus is conditional and subject to the fulfillment of the following conditions precedent within four months from the date of the agreement or such extended period(s) as mutually agreed upon by the parties:

·The signing of a technical assistance agreement and an after sales service agreement (including overseas warranty policy) by the parties; and

·TCIE obtaining the approval/license to assemble the vehicles from the government authorities of the countries.

The effective period of the agreement is 10 years from the effective date of the agreement (when the agreement becomes unconditional).

Tan Chong said TCIE and Silver Bus would negotiate and discuss the renewal of the agreement at least six months prior to the expiration of the agreement subject to the terms and conditions to be mutually agreed on.

The capital expenditure required for the new business venture, including purchase of jigs and accessories for the assembly of vehicles, is estimated at RM100,000. This will be fully funded by TCIE from internal sources.
