Finding the “unicorn”

I’m a soon-to-be uni student and just like almost every teenagers, I’m a gamer too. Since the life of a uni student requires a laptop for school tasks, it wouldn’t hurt to find a laptop that’s capable of gaming too right? Wrong. For the past MONTHS I’ve been looking for my unicorn (aka perfect gaming laptop) but to no avail. So in an attempt to achieve my goal (hopefully yours too, if you’re in the same spot as me), I created this topic to gather all tech enthusiasts in search for the unicorn. Now you may think, ‘just a gaming laptop what, so hard to find meh’? Well, gaming laptops are known for their hefty price tags plus the term “gaming” already screams taboo for Asian parents. So, to set things straight, my requirements are price under 4k, no red accents (don’t want to be that one guy), a good screen, good cooling, preferably amd 4000 series cpu and gtx 1650 is enough. Now, of course I’ve done research and the possible competitors are Asus Tuf Gaming A15, Acer Nitro 5, Acer Predator Helios 300, MSI GF63 and HP Omen 15. Feel free to suggest other compelling gaming laptops too. I’m gonna break down each of the laptops base on my thoughts.

Asus Tuf Gaming A15
————————————
Ahh, the most popular entry level budget gaming laptop. On paper, the specs is so good. Ryzen 5 4600H, gtx 1650/ti, 8gb ram, 512gb ssd and 144hz screen. I mean, what more could you ask for when you have a tight budget? Sad to say, Asus screwed up the Tuf gaming series this year. The screen and cooling are just trash. Try to convince me tho, cause I really had high hopes for this one before it was released, and got disappointed. Full details in this review by Hardware Unboxed: https://youtu.be/ZRDUR-rPGsM

Acer Nitro 5
————————————
Red accents is just a big no for me. It’s too gamery and just a sore to the eye. Plus the wasd keys are positioned too far left because of the numpad on the right. I mean who even uses the numpad? The left side of the left palm really digs into the chassis if you have a slightly bigger hand. Plus the touchpad is positioned too left as well. Speakers? Let’s not talk about it. Dave2d’s review: https://youtu.be/R2yNky1CM3c

Acer Helios 300
————————————
This one is more on the premium side. But seriously tho, this was the gaming laptop of the year in 2019. Really recommend this one. The problem is, the Malaysia market only has the RTX versions. I couldn’t find one with gtx 1650/ti here in Malaysia. RTX automatically bumps up the price so unfortunately, it’s out of my budget. But if you have a higher budget, I really recommend it. I don’t think Acer has announced the 2020 version as of writing tho, hopefully Acer can introduce more variant in Malaysia this year

MSI GF63
————————————
Msi, the gaming brand that we all know. As a gaming brand, of course their laptop screams gaming. So uh, red accents, no.

HP Omen 15
————————————
Boy oh boy am I excited for this one. I saw videos about the 2020 version and I really hope this is the one. I really like the new design, keyboard layout and the laptop overall. Problem is, I’m not sure if hp will launch the new version in Malaysia. I saw ads on Instagram about the hp omen but it’s the 2019 design. I scared that hp only refreshes the old design for Malaysia. Fingers crossed!

As you can see, I’m quite picky. If I could get over the poor screen and thermals, the Asus A15 could be the one. If I could accept red accents, Acer Nitro 5 or MSI GF63 could be the one. But, my defence is, if we’re spending this much money, we might as well spend it the right way right? If we ended up buying something we don’t like then why buy it? I’m at a point where I’m considering whether or not if I should buy a gaming laptop since I’m most probably going to be busy with school. Maybe an amd 4000 U series with Nvidia MX series graphics card is enough since I only play valorant and apex legends currently but coming from a potato laptop life, a gaming laptop is really my dream. I believe every gamer will understand this. Plus I have a library of steam games waiting to be played. If it really ended up like that then I’ll be unhappy too. For now, I’ll just wait for any new release this month and hopefully, can finally make a decision. Feel free to give ANY thoughts. Help a gamer out will you?
