BREAKING: Apple factory in India exploded

CHITTOOR, India - Most of the fire safety equipment was not functional at Apple supplier Foxlink’s facility in southern India, which has halted production due to a massive fire incident, a top government official told Reuters.

Except for fire extinguishers, safety systems such as smoke detectors, sprinklers and fire hydrants were in faulty condition at the Andhra Pradesh factory, leading to a slower response in containing the fire, said Mr J Ramanaiah, who leads the regional Fire Services Department.

Apple and Foxlink did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Foxlink, which makes charging cables for iPhones, is unlikely to resume full operations for two months after Monday’s fire incident, raising concerns of supply chain disruptions for the iPhone maker, a source told Reuters on Tuesday.

A part of the Foxlink building had collapsed to the ground due to the fire. There were no casualties.

The incident is the latest problem to hit Apple suppliers in India, from where it is increasingly ramping up manufacturing and exports. Apple has 11 suppliers in the country.

In 2021, production was hit at a facility of Apple contract manufacturer Foxconn due to food poisoning among workers, and in 2020, a Wistron India plant was hit by worker unrest over non-payment of wages.

Reuters visited the Foxlink site on Tuesday where a part of the building was completely charred and where residue smoke was still coming out from some parts.

Many workers gathered outside the facility, with some anxious about the status of their contract jobs. They told Reuters the fire broke out during lunch break on Monday, and some air conditioners exploded as the fire spread.

The Royal Malaysia Police said it acted within the law when arresting two students on Friday over an alleged rant on the history paper of a national examination.
Two 18-year-olds were remanded after a teacher made a police report in connection with a viral video showing a student criticising the exam paper.

“The viral video on TikTok and Facebook showed a male student in his school uniform expressing his dissatisfaction with the SPM history paper,” Hulu Selangor district police chief Suffian Abdullah said on Saturday, referring to the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exam.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said he will visit China in April to seek the Chinese government’s help with ending Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The announcement on Saturday came after China published a 12-point position paper that called for a ceasefire and a “political settlement” to end the year-long conflict.

“The fact that China is engaging in peace efforts is a good thing,” the French leader said, stressing that peace was only possible if “Russian aggression was halted, troops withdrawn, and the territorial sovereignty of Ukraine and its people was respected”.

“China must help us put pressure on Russia so that it never uses chemical or nuclear weapons … and that it stops its aggression as a precondition for talks,” he added.

DETROIT — Ford Motor
is suspending production of its electric F-150 Lightning pickup for another week following a battery issue that resulted in one of the vehicles catching fire early this month.

Ford said Friday its battery supplier, SK, has started building battery cells again at a plant in Georgia but it will take time “to ensure they are back to building high-quality cells and to deliver them to the Lightning production line.”

“The teams worked quickly to identify the root cause of the issue,” Ford said in a statement Friday. “We agree with SK’s recommended changes in their equipment and processes for SK’s cell production lines.”

Ford last week said it expected Lightning production to be down through at least this week, as engineers determined the root cause of the battery issue and implemented improvements to the manufacturing process.

The fire occurred Feb. 4 in a holding lot during a pre-delivery quality check while the vehicle was charging, followed by Ford suspending production and issuing a stop-shipment of the vehicles to dealers. Ford said engineers determined there was no evidence of a charging fault.

Ford said it is not aware of any incidents of this issue in vehicles that have already been delivered to customers and dealers.

The F-150 Lightning is being closely watched by investors, as it’s the first mainstream electric pickup truck on the market and a major launch for Ford.

The battery issue adds to ongoing “execution issues” detailed to investors earlier this month by Ford CEO Jim Farley that crippled the automaker’s fourth-quarter earnings.

A senior member of India’s main opposition Congress party has been arrested for allegedly insulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Pawan Khera was arrested at Delhi Airport, where he was forced off a plane on Thursday alongside other party members, after he called Modi “Narendra Gautamdas Modi” - an apparent reference to embattled business magnate Gautam Adani.

Adani, one of the wealthiest people in the world, saw his net worth halved in less than two weeks last month after a report by financial research and short seller firm Hindenburg Research leveled allegations of stock market manipulation and fraud against the Adani Group. The Adani Group condemned the report as “baseless” and “malicious.”

Adani is seen as a close ally of Modi.

In recent months, Modi has been accused of silencing his critics after the country banned a documentary from the BBC that was critical of the prime minister’s alleged role in deadly riots more than 20 years ago.

Indian tax authorities raided the BBC’s offices in New Delhi and Mumbai earlier this month citing “irregularities and discrepancies” in the BBC’s taxes. The BBC defended its documentary and said it was complying with the tax investigation.

Apple work with Chinese company to develop AR tech

One AirPod at a time, Chinese supplier Luxshare Precision is taking on the world. The company’s plan to become Apple’s main supplier has almost been achieved. It started by producing Apple’s wireless headphones. Now it has its sights fixed on the iPhone maker’s augmented reality headsets.

For the first time, a Chinese supplier has been hired to develop a new premium Apple product. Luxshare can now add AR headsets to the list of Apple products it supplies, including iPhones and Apple Watches.

Uncomfortable headgear and motion sickness have hampered mass uptake of AR devices so far. But Apple has the world’s largest AR platform. Its long-awaited headsets have the best chance of turning the tech into a mainstream product.

The AR devices are also expected to be one of Apple’s most expensive products, with prices forecast at between $3,000 and $5,000. The fact that a local Chinese company has been hired for early development and production speaks to the improving quality of Chinese suppliers. It also highlights the difficulty of diversifying manufacturing away from China.

Until now, Taiwanese suppliers such as Foxconn and Pegatron dominated the production of Apple’s new products, particularly premium models in the early stages of development. Luxshare only received its first major order to produce premium iPhone models earlier this year, despite being an Apple supplier since 2011.

For Apple, creating jobs in China is a good move. Sales of Apple products there remain strong despite lockdowns last year. The company reached its highest monthly market share in China in the last quarter. Diversifying suppliers also helps cut down on production disruptions.
