how to clone phone using nfc

can any one explain in technical detail how this was accomplished ?

https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2021...ned-by-same-man

KUALA LUMPUR: An act of kindness turned out costly for a taxi driver who lent his mobile phone to a passenger to call for help.

Azahari Ahmad, 56, ended up with a phone bill of about RM1,000 as his personal data is believed to have been used to gain access to make contactless payments.

“On Feb 23, I picked up a passenger from Kuchai Lama who wanted to go to Subang. During the journey, he said he left his mobile phone in a shop and wanted to get back there to retrieve it.

“However, the shop was closed when we arrived. So he wanted to borrow my mobile phone to call his friend, ” he said.

Azahari passed his phone to the passenger, who was seated at the back. The passenger made a call to his friend, who did not pick up.

Azahari did not suspect anything amiss after dropping him off.

But soon, his telco provider alerted him of a raised credit limit from RM500 to RM1,000 with several online transactions made.

Costly fare: Ng addressing the issue of drivers being cheated by a passenger at Wisma MCA. — AZMAN GHANI/The Star
Costly fare: Ng addressing the issue of drivers being cheated by a passenger at Wisma MCA. — AZMAN GHANI/The Star

“I have never increased my credit limit or bought anything through my phone account, ” he said.

As for e-hailing driver Jackson Chong Kaw Keong, he also had a similar encounter on March 4 at Seksyen 7 in Shah Alam.

In Chong’s case, his SIM card was switched.

“I only realised something was wrong when I called my wife, who asked why I was using another number.

“When I tried to sort it out at the telco centre, I was told that the SIM card in my phone was registered to someone else, ” said Chong, 47.

He got a shock when he saw his phone bill came up to RM1,200 on March 8.

Both Azahari and Chong were at a press conference by Campaign to Protect the Rights of E-Hailing Drivers spokesman Ng Kian Nam at Wisma MCA here yesterday.

Also present were Persatuan Kebajikan Pekerja Industri Ehailing Malaysia chairman Masrizal Mahidin and Koperasi Ehailing Maju Bhd chairman A. Thiruna.

Ng, who has received about 10 similar complaints from taxi and e-hailing drivers, believes Azahari’s phone was cloned to make contactless payments using the near-field communication (NFC) feature on his phone.

(NFC technology allows mobile phone users to make secure transactions, exchange digital content, and connect electronic devices with a touch. It can also be used to connect with wireless devices and transfer data with Android Beam.)

“All the complaints traced back to the same person based on the details and descriptions given by drivers.

“The victims’ phone accounts were used to purchase credits at online gambling websites, ” he said.

Ng said that checks with other e-hailing groups found that the culprit had registered fake accounts on e-hailing apps to approach drivers and lure them with supposed long-distance trips.

“In one case, the man promised to pay the e-hailing driver RM2,500 for a two-day trip to Butterworth last November but he actually ran away at the end of the journey, ” he said.

Ng said he would seek help from the police to speed up their investigation.

When contacted, Malaysian E-hailing Drivers Association president Daryl Chong said that he had come across similar cases among drivers in the last few months.

He explained that NFC payments are done by utilising the NFC technology to exchange data between readers and payment gateways, which include chargeable purchases under the telco provider, which happened to the driver.

“It is likely that the scammer had taken the driver’s phone, turned on the NFC function and immediately cloned the phone’s details into his own phone.

“We normally use NFC for contactless payment by having both devices nearby, ” he said.

the 70th anniversary of korean war

north and South Korea are today marking the 70th anniversary of the conflict that famously never ended; the Korean War began on 25 June 1950 and stopped, with only an armistice, in 1953.

In the South, veterans of the war were due to meet for a low-key commemoration that was expected to feature video messages from US president Donald Trump and other world leaders.

The main daily state-run newspaper of the North marked the day with a front-page commentary calling for people to follow in the footsteps of those who fought to defend the nation.

“Several decades have passed, but the danger of war has never left this soil," the newspaper said, blaming “hostile forces” for seeking to crush North Korea.

Just two years ago, it looked like unprecedented talks between the leaders of the two Koreas, China and the US might result in a permanent peace treaty finally being signed - but in recent months, inter-Korean relations have dramatically deteriorated.

Watch more
North Korea threatens to launch ‘mountain’ of leaflets at South
North Korea threatens to launch ‘mountain’ of leaflets at South
Trump cared little about North Korea's nuclear weapons, Bolton says
Trump cared little about North Korea's nuclear weapons, Bolton says
North Korea compares South to ‘mongrel dog’ after border office blast
North Korea compares South to ‘mongrel dog’ after border office blast
Improving relations with South Korea’s nuclear-armed neighbour was one of the main tickets through which president Moon Jae-in was elected, yet his goal of achieving peace on the Korean peninsula seems as far off as it has ever been in the past seven decades.

How did the Korean War begin?
After the end of the Second World War, Korea was to be granted independence from Japan, which had colonised it since 1910. But in the short term, from 1945 the country was administered by two different Allied forces - the northern half by the USSR, and the south by the US.

While the Soviets set up a North Korean Peoples' Army equipped with Russian tanks an artillery, the US command in the south kept its local president’s forces to a minimum, fearing his expressed aim of uniting the peninsula by force.

In 1948 the leaders of the two halves - Syngman Rhee installed by the US in the south, and Kim Il-sung, who fought alongside communist forces during the Chinese civil war, in the north - declared their territories the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea respectively.

Clashes broke out regularly along the border, and after a series of increasingly bloody skirmishes the North Korean Peoples' Army invaded on 25 June 1950, catching the US command off-guard and sweeping south to try and take the key strategic port city of Pusan.

What happened during the war?
The first year of the war was categorised by big swings in territorial control. Through the United Nations, the US declared North Korea as an aggressor and mobilised peacekeeping reinforcements from countries including Britain and Australia.

Two years after Singapore, how hopes faded for Trump and North Korea
Two years after Singapore, how hopes faded for Trump and North Korea
These forces held onto Pusan and then, in mid-September 1950, launched a counterattack that pushed the North Korean forces back well above the 38th parallel, the line of latitude that was used to divide the countries and became their de facto border.

In mid-October, the US General Douglas MacArthur met with president Harry Truman and declared the war would be won by Christmas, according to the historian Michael Hickey.

MacArthur had not reckoned on the intervention into the war of China. Beijing overtook the Soviets as the key ally for North Korea, flooding soldiers into the Korean peninsula in order to keep the conflict away from its own borders in November.

The UN forces were pushed back to a position well south of Seoul, but finally rallied and slowly advanced north again throughout the spring of 1951. The two sides finally settled into entrenched positions approximately along the 38th parallel, and began a long two-years stalemate.

How did it end?
The war devastated both North and South Korea as the line of control swept up and down the country. Some estimates put it that 70 per cent of all casualties were civilians.

“North Korea was flattened,” Bruce Cumings, a professor of history at the University of Chicago, told the New York Times. “The North Koreans see the American bombing as a Holocaust, and every child is taught about it.”

For much of the last two years of the conflict, both sides sought peace, as it became apparent that neither would achieve its goal of destroying the opposing regime and reunifying the peninsula.

Peace talks dragged on mainly because of an argument over what to do with thousands of North Korean prisoners of war held on the Souths’ prison island of Koje. The North insisted they all be returned to their country of origin, but many did not want to be repatriated. A deal was finally reached that allowed some to claim asylum, and in July 1953 Operation Big Switch saw each side hand over thousands of captive combatants across the line of control.

The fighting ended when an armistice was signed, though never ratified by South Korea, on 27 July 1953, The Demilitarised Zone or DMZ was created along the border, and a UN commission was established to oversee the armistice.

Throughout the war, historians say between three and four million people were killed. Of those, it is estimated that the dead included almost 40,000 US forces personnel, 400,000 Chinese (according to the Pentagon), 46,000 South Koreans, 215,000 North Koreans and 1,000 British soldiers.

So what happens next?
The Korean War represents “the ultimate ‘forever war’, a low-level conflict with dangerous flareups that have claimed countless lives over decades”, said Harry Kazianis, director of Korean Studies at the Washington-based Center for the National Interest. “There is no sign it will formally be concluded anytime soon,” he added.

A group of Chinese veterans used Thursday’s anniversary to call for lasting peace. “We hope to use our voice -- as Chinese veterans who fought against the West -- to urge more people to unite,” 87-year-old veteran and Shanghai resident Yu Jihua told the AFP news agency.

North Korea ‘blows up’ liaison office with South Korea
North Korea ‘blows up’ liaison office with South Korea
North Korea defectors will push ahead with leaflet balloons
North Korea defectors will push ahead with leaflet balloons
North Korea severs all communication with ‘enemy’ South Korea
North Korea severs all communication with ‘enemy’ South Korea
North and South Korea both violated armistice in DMZ gun fire, says UN
North and South Korea both violated armistice in DMZ gun fire, says UN
But while Seoul continues to push for a permanent peace treaty, the greatest priority for its ally the US has now become the need to remove North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s nuclear arsenal, which could have the potential to reach the mainland United States.

Progress in talks on denuclearisation has, like inter-Korean relations, spiralled rapidly downhill since the historic summit between Mr Kim and Mr Trump in Singapore in June 2018.

On Wednesday, Mr Kim ordered a suspension of military redeployments to the border that would have undone all the progress made in 2018, but levels of tension remain very high.

The US and South Korea marked Thursday by issuing a joint statement reminding Pyongyang to “meet its commitments” made in Singapore - when Mr Kim pledged to work towards the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

South Korean Defence Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo and US Defence Secretary Mark T. Esper said they "remain firmly committed to defending the hard-fought peace on the Korean Peninsula, to include supporting ongoing diplomatic efforts for the complete denuclearisation of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea".

The statement, which talks of the US’s “ironclad commitment to the defence of the Republic of Korea” (South Korea), makes no mention of working towards a permanent peace treaty.

https://www.state.gov/the-70th-anniversary-...the-korean-war/

India, Pakistan report deadly violence along Kashmir border
Civilians among those killed and injured in cross-border fighting in the disputed Kashmir region.

Civilians were killed in the Neelum Valley region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, according to a Pakistani civil administration official [File: M. Saif ul Islam/Reuters]
13 Nov 2020
At least 10 civilians and five security personnel have been killed in cross-border shelling between India and Pakistan, in one of this year’s deadliest days along the heavily militarised frontier separating the nuclear-armed rivals, officials said.

Indian officials said six civilians, three soldiers and a border guard were killed on their side.

Gun battle in Kashmir kills four Indian soldiers, three rebels
Indian troops kill top rebel commander in Kashmir gun battle
Shutdown in Kashmir after India’s new land laws
The Pakistan military said four civilians and one soldier were killed on the Pakistani side.

Twenty two others were wounded in the Neelum Valley region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, a Pakistani civil administration official told Al Jazeera.

“Deaths and damage are being reported from across the Neelum Valley,” said Safeer Butt, the official.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry has summoned a senior Indian diplomat to protest against the killings in Pakistan-administered Kashmir by Indian shelling, according to a statement.

The Indian diplomat was summoned to the foreign ministry in the Pakistani capital Islamabad to “underscore[e] that such senseless acts are in clear violation of the 2003 Ceasefire Understanding, and against all established humanitarian norms and professional military conduct”, the statement said.

A day earlier, at least one Pakistani civilian, 55-year-old Muhammad Bashir, was killed due to Indian shelling the Rakhchikhri sector of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, about 80km (50 miles) southeast of the regional capital Muzaffarabad.

Three other civilians were wounded in Indian shelling in the village of Samni, roughly 150km (93 miles) southeast of Muzaffarabad, Pakistan’s foreign ministry said.

‘Continue to live in fear’
Muhammad Shakoor, 50, a resident of Balkote village in India-administered Kashmir, who lost three of his neighbours in Friday’s shelling, told Al Jazeera that “they continue to live in fear”.

“People only remember about us when we die. We live this death every day,” he told Al Jazeera over phone.

“The government is not providing us bunkers so that we could save ourselves during the shelling. We are caught between the bullets of two sides. Neither do we sleep nor we find any peace here”.

A ceasefire has been in effect since 2003 across the length of the Line of Control (LoC), which divides Pakistan-administered and Indian-administered Kashmir, but it is frequently violated by both India and Pakistan, with each routinely blaming the other for initiating hostilities.

Both countries claim the disputed mountainous territory of Kashmir in full, but administer separate portions of it. They have fought two of their three wars over the region since gaining independence from the British in 1947.

According to Pakistan’s foreign ministry, the ceasefire has been violated by India at least 2,729 times this year, resulting in 21 civilian deaths and serious injuries to 206 others

Pakistan says it has evidence of India sponsoring attacks
This was a rare time officials said they prepared a mountain of evidence to back up the charges again against India.

Pakistan says India is sponsoring “terrorism” aimed at destabilising the country and targeting its economic partnership with China, accusations top Pakistani officials delivered at a news conference.

Pakistan and India routinely accuse each other of targeting the other, but this was a rare time Pakistani officials said they prepared a mountain of evidence to back up the allegations against their South Asian rival.

Pakistan’s top Islamic body approves construction of Hindu temple
Pakistani al-Qaeda bomb-maker killed in Afghanistan
India, Pakistan report deadly violence along Kashmir border
In a joint news conference on Saturday in the capital Islamabad, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, along with military spokesman Major-General Babar Iftikhar, said Indian intelligence agents were operating out of neighbouring Afghanistan to plan attacks within Pakistani borders.

“India was allowing its land to be used against Pakistan for terrorism,” said Qureshi, adding that New Delhi was also planning attacks from “neighbouring countries”.

Qureshi said Pakistan is sending its evidence to the United Nations demanding India be censured, warning “without international intervention it is difficult to guarantee peace in nuclear South Asia”, a region where both India and Pakistan possess nuclear weapons.

“We have irrefutable facts that we will present before the nation and international community through this dossier,” the minister claimed.

The news conference comes a day after Pakistan’s military said five civilians and an army soldier were killed by shelling from Indian troops across the highly militarised border that separates the Pakistani and Indian sides of Kashmir.

The disputed border in the Himalayan region is a source of long-standing conflict between the two powers.

Iftikhar, who heads the media and public relations office for Pakistan’s armed forces, presented some of the dossier’s evidence purporting to show India’s involvement in attacks within Pakistan, including bank receipts showing funding and photos showing alleged perpetrators of attacks inside the Indian consulate in Jalalabad, Afghanistan.

He also played an audio clip purporting to record a conversation between an Indian intelligence official and Allah Nazar, who is the top leader of Baloch separatist fighters in southwest Pakistan.

Iftikhar added Indian intelligence agents were especially targeting Chinese development projects that have come with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

He alleged the attackers who led a deadly assault on a luxury hotel in the southwestern city of Gwadar in October 2016 were in telephone contact with Indian intelligence handlers before and during the assault.

Chinese companies operate the Pakistani city’s key port facilities and it is considered a keystone of major Pakistani-Chinese trade projects.

The military spokesman also accused India of sponsoring banned organisations including UN-designated “terrorist” groups Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, and Allah Nazar’s Baloch Liberation Army.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Afghanistan’s foreign ministry, Gran Hewad, said on Saturday Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is planning to visit Afghanistan next week.

The foreign ministry said this will be Khan’s first visit to Kabul as Pakistan’s prime minister. It was not mentioned whether he would raise Pakistan’s allegations of Indian interference.

source:
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/11/13/p...ashmir-violence

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/11/14/p...nsoring-attacks
